On december 21st 2012 i left to drop my daughter at daycare... we got into the vehicle and i found i was unable to get my vehicle out of park and had to put it in neutral and start it (also found that the windows and wipers weren't operating at all either) ... my daughter stated mommy, i smell something burning and my assumption was the fuse had blown... i drove a few blocks and dropped her off and then stopped a block away at the local convenient store and upon exiting the store came out and found flames pouring out of my driver side wheel/ hood area. the 7-11 employee had a fire extinguisher and was able to put out the fire and i was informed and shown by the cary fire department where the fire had started and that there was a recall for that part in which i'm the fourth owner of. it took three weeks to get a reply from their general counsel department and in my eyes this needs to be expedited as i'm paying for a rental car that i can't afford... i'm not impressed by lack of urgency as i have no vehicle to get to and from work which is how i provide for me and my child. *tr

 1. when it rains my 2002 ford expedition has water coming inside of it on the driver side. consequently causing my gem and fuse box to have to be replaced. i took it to the dealer and replaced the gem and resealed my windshield. the next day after receiving my vehicle back from the dealer it rained again and had to take it back for the same symptom. they dried out the module and made sure the windshield was sealed good but until this day rain still comes in. i also replaced the door seal and took the luggage rack off and put sealant under it and it still gets water in my vehicle

My car started just fine but it would not shift out of park and none of the windows worked. i checked the fuses and one was blown. i replaced the fuse and my car appeared to be working normally. i got within a half a block from my house and smoke started coming out from under the hood. i pulled into my driveway and immediately shut my car off. smoke was pouring out from under the hood. i opened the hood and the cruise control deppression switch was glowing red hot. within a few seconds it burst into flames.

While driving to work, heard pop under dashboard (fuse panel) and radio went off. replacement fuse blew immediately upon replacement. removed radio and replacement fuse immediately blew again. suspected ground in power circuit to factory stereo, verified with test light. shorted circuit, 797 in this vehicle, is hot at all times (not switched through ignition). subsequent investigation by owner shows that main wiring harness behind dashboard was not correctly installed when the vehicle was assembled at factory. the mounting points installed in the harness were never installed in the corresponding holes in the body, allowing the harness to sag approximately 2 inches below its correct position (and presumably rub against metal parts behind the dashboard). due to the faulty factory installation, the harness can not be raised far enough to be properly installed without removing at least part of the dashboard and passenger side airbag (dealer says entire dashboard must be removed, a significant cost item). dealer mechanic has viewed harness and agrees harness was not correctly installed. subject harness also contains wiring for airbags, instrument panel, transmission control, rear lighting, trailer controls; basically every circuit in the vehicle which is controlled from or has indication in the dashboard. owner is still troubleshooting and attempting to repair. *tr

2002 expedition eddie bauer edition it's been having electrical issues for awhile, and just recently the alternator had to be replaced. since then the lovely electrical issues have snowballed. driving down the road, my locks start locking and unlocking themselves. then the warning lights start going off (airbag, theft device, abs, battery). then it starts to shake and i press the gas pedal, and nothing happen except it rolls forward slowly, like i'm idling through the light. i made it to the 7-11 parking lot just before it died. i've got no idea what is wrong, only that i'm either the owner of a very large paperweight, or my truck is possessed. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 ford expedition. while driving approximately 40 mph the contact heard a very loud sound from underneath the hood of the vehicle. the sound was derived from a spark plug that was ejected from the cylinder head. the failure caused the contact to swerve across two lanes of traffic and drive into someone's yard. the vehicle shut off, and was towed to a mechanic. the mechanic confirmed that the ejected spark plug was indeed the cause of failure. the current mileage is 72,502, and the failure mileage was unknown.*ak

2 - electrical problems the first problem resulted in about $800 worth of repairs - a wire underneath the dash grounded itself on the frame of the automobile. this showed itself by blowing several fuses as well a shutting down the ability to put the car in gear once started. it took several weeks to realize the exact problem. replacing fuses helped, but blow several days later. many options such as the power windows, radio, rear wipers, running board lights, interior lights, etc. would not work. the second instance is even more alarming - the speed control deactivation switch caught fire while in the garage. my wife was at home at the time. she needed something out of the car. when she opened the door to the garage she noticed that the garage was full of smoke. she called 911. the fire department got the car out and extinguished the fire.... we were lucky.*jb

My 2002 ford expedition's windshield wipers and audio system would not function in any position except park. i took the vehicle in on jan. 24 and was told that since the vehicle audio and wiper system functioned properly. i got a call later in the day saying that the vehicle's wipers and audio system displayed the malfucntion that i had described. i was also told that there was severe corrsion around some of the eletrical parts. the service tech suspected a leak but could not tell where the leak was coming from. the dealership replaced the corroded part for the amount of $1065.70 and released the car to me. on jan. 31, my husband noticed at 5:00 a.m as he was preparing for work that the audio system was blasing and the dash board was lit. he attempeted to start the car, but it wouldn't. he called the dealership at 8:00 a.m to report the problem. a towing company was contacted at this time. at approximately 12 noon, my husband attemted to start the car again. this time it started and my husband drove the vehicle to the dealership. the service engine light remained on, and the vehicle drove rough. on arrival at the dealership, a small fire started under the hood of the vehicle. the starter had burned (according to the service tech). the starter was replaced on feb. 6. the service manager then reported that a leak was detected, and he suspected that it was coming from the top of the windshield (we told them that we replaced the windshield in july because of a small whole from a rock in the road). we paid an additional $335 for the replacement of the starter. we carried the vehicle back to the glass delearship and had them run a wet test with my husband as a witness. water did not enter the vehicle through the windshield. as an extra precaution we had extra sealant placed around the windshield. upon further investigation, i learned that the wipers may have a malfunction that causes water to enter the dash after rain or snow. both occurances started after rain. *nm

On 7/3/2007 i heard a loud banging sound and smelled gas coming from under my engine. when i had it towed to sioux falls ford, they said a spark plug had blown out. when i asked if that was a factory defect, i was told that the plug may have been put in incorrectly. i have never had the spark plugs replaced, so i knew it was a factory plug, but the technician said that they had no way of knowing that. i spent $800 to have the it re-thread. 4 weeks later, a different spark plug did the same thing. at that time, they told me that they would check all of the spark plugs to ensure that they were tight. 4 weeks after that, the ignition coil needed to be replaced in that plug and the plug needed to be replaced. they claimed that their repairs had not caused this, but i feel like i have been getting the run-around on all of this simply because i am a woman. *tr

A fuse blew & the windows wouldn't go up. when i replaced it smoke started pouring out from under the hood of my ford expedition 2002, eddie bower which was parked in my garage. i took out the fuse & tried to back the expedition out of the garage but i couldn't take it out of park. i put the fuse back in & flew out of the garage smoke again coming out from under the hood. i took out the fuse & open the hood. the smoke was coming from a senor on the master cylinder. i sprayed the fire extinguisher on it and unplugged it. i put it in the shop & they change the cruise control brake switch. the same part was recalled on my f150 xlt 2000 pick-up. my cruise control & horn won't work now & the shop doesn't know what is wrong to fix but i can put the fuse in & the windows go up & down, & we can drive it. the shop said that when this part goes out it lets a charge feed back to the ground side & can cause fires. it is the same part as was recalled on my pick-up! *nm

Every time it rains hard my vehicle won't start and if it does the wipers and radio will not operate when i put in reverse or drive. i took it to the dealership and they told me that it was the right side windshield seal. i asked them if this was a manufacture defect and they said no that it was the shifting of the glass when i run over bumps. the same thing was happening to a f-250 p/u when i took my vehicle in. they told me that they would have to replace the fuse box, gear module, rear wiper motor. i don't believe bumps would cause this to happen and from the sound of it, it appears to have been happening for a good while because they told me at the service department that there was mold in the gear module. i am afraid that if it rains and i am on the road that my truck might just turn off or my wipers might short out. the estimated cost for all repairs is about $1000.00. *ak
