On december 21st 2012 i left to drop my daughter at daycare... we got into the vehicle and i found i was unable to get my vehicle out of park and had to put it in neutral and start it (also found that the windows and wipers weren't operating at all either) ... my daughter stated mommy, i smell something burning and my assumption was the fuse had blown... i drove a few blocks and dropped her off and then stopped a block away at the local convenient store and upon exiting the store came out and found flames pouring out of my driver side wheel/ hood area. the 7-11 employee had a fire extinguisher and was able to put out the fire and i was informed and shown by the cary fire department where the fire had started and that there was a recall for that part in which i'm the fourth owner of. it took three weeks to get a reply from their general counsel department and in my eyes this needs to be expedited as i'm paying for a rental car that i can't afford... i'm not impressed by lack of urgency as i have no vehicle to get to and from work which is how i provide for me and my child. *tr

Rear differential control links rusted thru and broke. this allowed the differential to move toward the rear. when it moved far enough the rear drive shaft fell out of the transfer case and broke off at the rear yoke. considering the number of expeditions and navigators on the road...someone is going to get killed. *tr

Ford triton 4.6l engine spark plug blow-out occurred turning a corner at 30. the vehicle immediately started sputtering and lost power. i had to immediately pull over and get the vehicle off the road. the spark plug had been completely blown out of the engine block and taken some additional head with it.

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 ford expedition. the contact stated that the vehicle automatically engaged the four wheel drive when it reached speeds between 30 to 35 mph. the vehicle then began pulling to the right. the contact was able to manually shift the vehicle into drive without having to stop the vehicle or turn the engine off. the vehicle also with much force lunged to the right when the four wheel drive activated on it's own. the vin was unavailable. the current and failure mileages were 42,000.

Ford expedition failed suspension system repair request under warranty.*mr the consumer's believed the suspension system is faulty. the consumer contacted the manufacturer but they refused any assistance. *nm the transmission started with an occasional chunk and or ratcheting sound, rough, did not move and would bang when moved, the driver window occasionally rolled up out of the top rack and there was air leakage, the vehicle was extremely bouncy and was so severe that the consumers head would bounce against the roof top of the vehicle and the vehicle swayed severely when the vehicle made a turn around curves. *sc *jb

Vehicle was bought used @ 27000 and brought back the day following purchase with the transmission troubles. this vehicle is and was under manufacturers warranty. ford should have some liability regardless if this was purchased used or not since it is so low mileage and the year make of it and it is under the manufacturers warranty. transmission slipping and not staying in gear. returned to dealer and they replaced a sensor saying there was 'no response' from the sensor and it was ruled as 'bad'. again in july the vehicle was returned because it was still slipping, smelled of burning rubber...transmission was then rebuilt by the dealer as it had a lot of issues once they opened up the trans. now here less than 4 weeks after that last repair which was the second in less than two months. transmission is slipping and not changing gears properly. took this vehicle on a longer duration trip than usual along with high freeway speeds. once the vehicle gets near 70 mph the trans sticks and the vehicle loses acceleration. the trans trouble i am having with this expedition is ridiculous.

My 2002 ford expedition has always had transmission shifting problems. over the years, it will sometimes not go out of 4x4 without some gentle coaxing. just the other day, it shifted out of gear on the highway and the overdrive light started flashing. i started to hear a sound like i was dragging something. when i stopped, i had to drive it in manual 2 just to get it home. at home, it would not go into reverse and was acting like the front wheels were locked up when i put it in neutral. i have had shifting problems for the life of this vehicle (i have had it for 8 years....) this was the first time it has been this drastic. it looks like i will have to have a new transmission.....

My 2002 ford expedition od light flashes on and off. i was driving down i75 and my transmission kept shifting in and out of gear.. my whole trip. it slammed into gear almost causing me to loose control of my vehicle. this transmission is definitely a safety hazard. it does not do it all the time seems like when we hit bumps in the road. *tr

Transmission slip. o/d light started to blink and transmission clunks into gear. this problem seems to be very prevalent as a few of my friends who own 2000 to 2002 model fords have had this problem. they have had their transmissions replaced or rebuilt. this is a very common problem and the manufacturer is ignoring the problem with their vehicles. 4r100 transmission. i believe this is a solenoid body or harness malfunction. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 ford expedition. while attempting to park the vehicle, it accelerated to a high rate of speed and crashed into a wall. none of the air bags deployed. the contact was injured and the insurance company recommended that the dealer service the vehicle. the vehicle was at the dealer for 32 days while the repairs were made. the failure and current mileages were 31000.

Over a course of one year of purchasing vehicle, it has been in the shop 7 times for an engine/transmission issue, unsure as ford has not been able to identify the problem. when i contacted ford, they denied to buy the vehicle back due to the mileage on the vehicle. as of today, the vehicle has not been fixed although drivable, for how long until it gives out?*jb

May 04, my vehicle transmission was serviced (filter changed and fluid replaced) by the local ford dealer. in june 04, under 1,000 miles since the service, my vehicle began to vibrate in the rear end when it would shift around 45 m.p.h.and was returned to the ford dealer who diagnosed the problem as water in the trasmission. the filter was replaced at my expense and the problem has progressed over the last two months. the dealership stated that they could not replace the transmission because there were no other mechanical problems associated with the problem. *ak

2002 ford expedition purchased from crossroads ford september 2001. first in for hesitation when pressing gas and idling in reverse. replace cylinder #6 and two spark plugs. second time in for same reason. replaced cylinder #6 again. third time in for same reason. replaced nothing--they said they could find nothing wrong. fourth time in same reason. kept car for nine days, dumbfounded-as they could find nothing wrong -replaced cylinder #6 and the fuel injector after speaking with ford on a conference call--- tenth day picked up car--- eleventh day car is not fixed--still has the same problem.*ak

My transmission shift lever would not move. i called for an assistance, i was told my shifting cable would not moved and probably the cable was broke. i'd asked the towing person to bring my ford expedition ford dealer in bellflower. i search the internet for relative issues regarding my problem was identical to nhsta recall id # 97v17100 and 97v14700. i believe that this is still on going problem with ford expedition since 1997 as indicated to the recall number date. i asked for the old part (shifting cable assembly so i could evaluate what when wrong. i've noticed that steel braided cable was used and it was enclosed in a very strong plastic protection. but the cable break inside the casing. i only have 55,000 miles. i'd also noticed that i could now easily changed or shift the shifting lever with very light movement of my hand unlike when i'd first got my expedition back in april 2002. i'd remember that most of the time i have to really pulled it hard just to shift the lever, back then i thought that was normal but after the shifting cable was replaced i could changed the gear position with just my finger and really very light pressure. so. my conclusive to the issue was 1) ford personnel does not pay attention on proper installation of this shifting cable 2) ford use inferior or substandard part. the movement of the sleeve and the location of the bracket that holds the assembly close to the shifting level will contribute to the problem. i believed ford should look further on this problem because they have this since 1997 i still have the old part and it will be available for further investigation. the newly installed cable seems to be doing its purpose because with just a light pressure i could change the gear position unlike the original cable assembly that i really have to pull hard and push hard to change gear position. *jb

While driving at approximately 15 mph at a parking lot, the 4x4 light in the dashboard became on and all four wheels in the vehicle locked up. the vehicle would not move back or forward. no one was injured as no cars were behind me. after about 15 minutes of trying to move the vehicle back or forward and moving the 4x4 knob in the dashboard, i was able to unlock the wheels and drive homew with the vehicle. i have not driven the vehicle since then until i can get more information on whether there is a safety problem. i intend to call the dealership tomorrow to report the problem. i am concerned about driving the vehicle at a higher rate of speed because if the wheels locked up at a higher rate of speed it can cause an accident if someone happens to be driving behind.
