Live in chicago il. (20 minutes outside) and my expedition was left outside. it got cold (48 outside) over night, and my ford was dead in the morning, (dome lights wouldn't even turn on). i jumped it, and noticed that the climate control was inoperable (doesn't even light up). i took it to ford, and they had thought that the unit burned out. cool, i can buy one on e-bay for about $40.00 instead of 326.00 that they quoted me... i left feeling a little better, knowing what the problem was....then something strange started happening... the 4wd high/low is flashing in 1 minute intervals at the same time. the driver seat is adjusting on it's own, while i am driving, and cannot be stopped, leaving me crammed into the dash/steering wheel, the back up aid is not working, when i exit the vehicle the radio stays on, i have to re-open the doors and close them again to turn it off, and i still have the problem with the climate controls. call me stupid, but this sounds a little more indepth than a climate control burning out. after reading countless issues with the expedition (including the cool feature of auto ignite, where it decides to burn it's self to the ground after being parked for 3-5 hours due to electrical fires) i am not sure i am very fond of this truck anymore. i am not encouraged by everyone on this having similar electrical problems, and not having ford be able to identify the problem causes grave concern, seeing how my wife and 3 kids (who are secured in their car seats) are driving in a fire laden death trap, or worse, my wife getting pinned against the steering wheel from the seat going haywire, then hitting another car and the air bag going off.... this is serious, i need you to investigate this a little more closely, please for my family's well being. *tr

Rear heating/ac air blend door actuator has failed. a drive gear inside the actuator has stripped and is missing two teeth. upon further investigation it appears that the manual temperature control causes the actuator to reach one end of it's internal travel limit prematurely, straining the internal gear drive. also, the air blend door travel limits are reached before the actuator limits, straining the internal gear drive further at both ends of travel. the two issues cause the effective rotation range of the manual temperature control to be reduced from 300 degrees of rotation to 135 degrees of rotation, and any positioning of the control outside the effective range strains and strips the gears of the blend door actuator.

I turned the corner and the whole back window shattered. i stopped right away and looked around. most of the glass had shattered outside the expedition. there was no rock or anything else that hit it. as a matter of fact, the corner i turned at, there was a metro police officer there because there was an accident in the middle there. my children where scared and crying but there was no glass on them. the next morning i took the 2003 ford expedition down to friendly ford and they said it is not covered.

Side view mirrors fail to return to proper position after using reverse aid. mirrors often tilt too high, too low, etc. and max out creating bad clicking as if they are still trying to tilt past furthest point. have to reset manually on each side every time. happens 9 out of 10 times used, and has been happening since purchase. ford says there is no fix to this problem, and has not heard of the issue much, even though you can find hundreds or thousands of this type of complaint on websites such as this and others. *tr

Purchased a 2003 ford expedition about 2 months ago, since then drivers side window regulator was replaced. week and half ago, passengers fwd inoperative, yesterday, drivers side inoperative. when first one was fixed. technician said it was a big problem. the regulator cables bind up. he said bad design. still waiting for my appointment to repair the other 2 windows. when these windows fail. they are either stuck up, or down. resulting in a safety issue in floods or water, or heat issues if the windows cannot be rolled down. not to mention, emergency escape issues. looking on the internet, i have found many websites with archived forums with many people complaining of the same situation. *nm

Since we have owned this 2003 expedition we have had the windshield replaced due to noise and loose stripping, then, the contracting person put in the wrong years windshield. the emissions canister was cracked and was replaced. the muffler would pop after turning off the engine, but couldn't be fixed until verified by ford. i waited for 3-4 hours one day with 3 children while they let my car run and shut off. we finally called ahead, and had them wait outside on us until we killed the engine to hear it pop. it was a poor muffler weld and was repaired. the side molding rattled badly, and was terribly faded, and that was replaced. the door gets a lot of wind noise , and a whistle in the window. they said window passed the dollar bill test and was fine but it still whistles. they, put a clear strip along inside of door to help noise. it doesn't. then ,the rear continental tire had such horrible, uneven wear, it was extremely dangerous. bought new tires for $600. then rear differential malfunctioned, and would make a grinding on turning left or right. they fixed that in march 2005, and it just started doing it again. now, there is a strange noise when revving the engine to drive coming from under the hood. it is going in tomorrow for the noise and the rear differential. on top of all the repairs, we have had a squeaky brake issue. also, they have said they were good. they just get a lot of brake dust, just sand them. our side windows shimmies all the time. ! i did invest in an extended warranty!. *ak

A recurrent and unsolvable problem with the power exterior mirrors on a 2003 ford expedition. the passenger mirror is incapable of returning to its pre-set position. this occurs whether or not the reverse aid feature is on or off and also occurs whether or not the memory feature for driver 1 or driver 2 is activated. it occurs roughly one-half of the time the vehicle is unlocked even by the same driver (driver 1) in succession. due to the ford installed alarm feature, the unlocking fob (or the door mounted keypad) must be used. each triggers the mirror failure. two dealers have been unable to resolve the problem, even after multiple visits, having the vehicle for several days in succession, and having the available ford technical service bulletin brought to their attention. ford motor company (on letterhead correspondence) now denies that any problem exist with my vehicle (after detailed telephone and written correspondence). two neighboring acquaintences with the same year and model vehicle have experienced the same failure without resolution as well. multiple postings on the ntsha website make reference to this same problem and speak of ford's promise to resolve. this is a serious safety defect. either a solution to remedy the problem should be provided by ford or the vehicles shoudl be recalled and a mirror system that has been proven to function properly should be installed.*ak

The vehicle in question has been in the shop twice for misfire in the engine. the motor started running rough right after a startup one morning with a substantial amount of smoke coming out of the exhaust and about a week later another enormous amount of smoke on startup in the morning. the chain of events also caused other intermitten problems with the performance of the vehicle such as a sense of slack between the engine and rear differential when up shifting and down shifting. the vehicle also has intermitten problems starting , for example, you have to crank the engine three to four seconds longer than normal and at times i have had to stop the ignition and try again. there have been other problems with the vehicle that have been resolved and a continued problem with the mirrors moving when they are not supposed to, although i have not seen them move while driving as of thus far. please note the incident date shown below is approximate and is when the problems started. i have filed complaints with ford motor company, department of consumer affairs and mailed an application to the dispute settlement board offered through ford motor company.*ak

I have a 2003 ford expedition and i have the automatic mirrors that rotate in and down when the vehicle is put into reverse. when i purchased the vehicle, the right mirror would continue to move in and down when the vehicle was put into reverse. when the vehicle was placed in drive the mirror was suppose to go back to the pre-sert position but it would not. the problem was fixed when i picked up the vehicle. about a year later the same problem recurred and the dealer replaced both lt and rt mirror motors. now the problem has recurred again with little difference. now when i unlock the doors with the remote both the left and right side mirrors rotate in and down as if the vehicle is in reverse but that is even before the doors ar open. when the vehicle is started neither mirror will go back to the pre-set positions. so now before i can drive the vehicle i have to adjust each mirror. this problem happens each time the vehicle is unlocked with the remote. if i use the key to unlock the left door the mirrors stay at the pre-set position until i place the vehicle in reverse but the mirrors will not move back to the pre-set position after going to the drive position. with the mirrors in the automatic reverse position, neither will go back to the pre-set position. after turning off the automatic reverse on the message center computer, both mirrors will still drive to the in and down position when the vehicle is unlocked and both have to be set again before driving. *jb

According to dealership and manufacturer reps, the problem with the side mirrors and their propensity to move without warning or pop when using the vehicles' reverse mirror function, is due to poor design from ford motor company. i have been told that i am just too tall (6'3), and that the location that i have the mirrors adjusted in, causes the housing to make contact with the tilting assembly! i find it hard to believe that ford would produce a vehicle that will not allow you to adjust the mirros properly so that you can see traffic behind you, and still be able to use a function that was designed into the vehicle! the mirros modules have been replaced twice on both sides as well as the motors. i have filed a complaint with ford and have been told that due to the design flaw, the vehicle is as it was designed and they have no intent to repair. good luck seeing traffic on either side.*ak

Exterior mirrors shake while driving. one mirror has already been replaced by the dealer, but it still shakes. it is virtually impossible to get a clear view of traffic behind you. this poses a very dangerous situation. dealer said they are all like that, even on the brand new vehicles. sounds like ford needs to find a supplier with a better quality product before these mirrors cause an accident - whether with my vehicle or someone else's.*ak

I purchased my 2003 ford expedition back in september 2002. in less than a month the automatic adjusting side view mirrors on the driver and passenger started malfunctioning. i took it to the dealer for repair but to no avail. i was informed that it would be march 2003 before a replacement part or fix could be made. i have been driving around with this potentially dangerous hazard, not knowing if my mirrors will take it upon itself to start adjusting without warning because of a defect that the dealers repair shop or ford can not explain. i was promised that this problem would be fixed in march 2003. i was called by palmetto ford here in charleston sc. on february 28, 2003 and informed that there was parts in to fix my mirrors. upon dropping my vehicle off for repair i was called about mid-day and advised that the whole drivers side mirrors needed replacing and that it would be best to leave the car over night so that they could expedite the process when the mirror came in. after picking my vehicle up after the repairs were made i had to take it back to the repair facility with the same problem of the mirrors going hay wire. i really feel that this needs to be addressed at a higher level. at this point i believe that i am getting the run around. too many months have gone by without a solution to this accident waiting to happen. i am real concerned about the overall safety of my family while driving a vehicle that could leave you in a dangerous situation when you think your side view mirrors are in one position while driving and then when you go to look to change lanes abruptly etc. they are totally out of alignment pointing up to the sky. please contact me on this matter.*jb

Purchased 2003 expedition xlt in 9/03 and had the following problems within one week of purchase: a/c noise & decreased volume when max a/c is on; rattling noise from side panels (which also showed fading within 3 months and were replaced); washer fluid light showed low when full; foam loose around defroster. by 12/03, stereo system replaced due to loud whining noise; has been replaced 3 times (problem still recurring); 2/04 sun roof leaking profusely into 2nd row seat area (same problem occurred a month later though repaired). when dealer's subcontractor repaired moonroof the second time, the technican neglected to screw rear seatbelt bolt tightly back to side panel. seatbelt bolt broke away from side panel while child was sitting in seat! dealer repaired and checked all seat belt attachments at my request but did not offer to determine source of problem until i insisted. service mgr initially reported he thought it was a factory defect, until they researched the problem in detail. i strongly recommend that ford have a policy that any safety devices removed or tampered with during any repair should be double checked for proper operation prior to returning vehicle to owner. *ak

We purchased a 2003 ford eddie bauer october 3rd 2002 and was told by the salesman that we would have no problem with the moon roof as far as leaks or wind noise. not only does the moon roof leak the front windshield has had a rattle in it ever since we got it. we have taken the vehicle back to the dealership 3 times to get the problems fixed and each time it comes back the moon roof seems to leak even worse. the rattle is still in the windshield also. we have been told now that we should expect the moon roof to leak going through a high pressure car washes. this is what the dealership has told us since they can't seem to fix the problems. this is not what we expected when we purchaced this vehicle. the problems are still being addressed and the dealership is still trying to fix the problems.

Outside mirror lights and interior lights would not go off after getting out of vehicle and pressing remote lock button. they eventually ran the battery down. this was after a hard rain. a few weeks later the same thing happened only this time, the radio would not turn off (key out of ignition and doors open) the chime kept going off and the battery went dead because i did not disconnect it. i researched online and found this is not uncommon because the windshield leaks, from the factory, and water drips down onto the computer module and fuse box. i checked my fuse box and i did have dripping water in it along with corroded connectors, inside the vehicle, indication long term intrusion of water. this causes all kinds of problems. other owners have reported complete loss of power while driving. upon inspecting my oem windshield i found it completely separated at the top and i could see light between the glass and seal. i now have to buy a new windshield along with fuse block and computer crap. the other problem is that the entire top of the windshield, as mentioned, is not sealed. i have been informed that the windshield integrity is a huge part of the strength of the vehicle and the windshield is used to support the passenger side air bag in case of deployment. i don't have that integrity on my vehicle. this is very unsafe condition and this should be something that ford pays for. *tr

*ak

Attempted to buy wiper blades from ford dealer for my expedition. the blades they gave me fit but would not lock in place. was told by the service personnel that ford had changed the arms on all 2003 models built before june of 2003 and the remedy was to replace the arms on both wipers. the price of each arm is $178. they told me to contact ford about paying for the replacement. have done so and awaiting decision. *la
