While driving at 40 mph engine stopped working making brakes and steering fail. limped off busy road luckily! engine light showed electronic throttle failure. now check engine light is on. going to dealers for repair today-since this is an obvious problem for ford why haven't they addressed it! could be deadly if fails in heavy traffic conditions.

Was driving around 40 miles per hr and engine just quit. no power steering. warning light came on regarding throttle. luckily we were not on the interstate and could pull over. my son will be turning 16 in a few months and he was going to be driving this. now we are worried. there are so many complaints on line. ford needs to recall this. someone will end up being hurt over this. i have seen that replacing throttle does not fix it. we turned car off and restarted it and it worked fine. you do not know when this will happen.

First time it occurred i was traveling to work the car stalled while driving approx. 20 mph and there was no control of the car - was able to move to side of road and restart. fault on the console was electronic throttle. has happen approx 4 more times at various speeds and conditions with three different drivers. no problem ever found by dealer. has happened at high speed on the freeway complete loss of steering and power occurs more concerning it can happen at any time without warning. i find this to be extremely dangerous and a death trap waiting to happen. the last time it occurred when by teenage daughter was driving she was scared to death refusing to drive it home. this reminded me of toyota prius so i took it upon myself to report my incidents. looking at the internet i now find it occurs frequently and it is not an isolated case. *tr

I was driving, when i tried to further accelerate, the car did not respond and a warning check electronic throttle control. i pulled over and was able to restart the car and continue to drive as normal. the internet indicates this is a common problem in 2005 expeditions. this is obvious a highly dangerous situation to not be able to accelerate while already driving. *tr

I was driving down the center lane on rt 41 in port charlotte, with an approximate speed of 45 mph, when the engine just shut down. this is not the first time it happened to me, and it's very dangerous. i had to maneuver carefully to pull over to the side of the road, with cars beeping, and swerving around me. i tried to restart the vehicle, but kept getting an engine fail safe mode message. i sat for a while on the side of the road for about 5 minutes, and when i tried restarting the truck, it miraculously started. on monday, september 17, 2012, i went out to start my vehicle so i could bring it in to my mechanic, and it wouldn't start. i had to have it towed to his shop. he informed me that he has seen this problem many times with this vehicle. he also told me that people were on the highway when the vehicle shut down on them, and has caused accidents. he reset the code for the throttle body, and the truck ran fine. after doing an internet search on this problem, i see that there are multiple complaints about this dangerous problem. i also contacted ford to see if there was a recall for this problem, and they said there wasn't. i am afraid to drive the truck now, for fear that it is going to shut down in a busy intersection. hopefully ford will step up to the plate and do a recall for this problem. *tr

Warning light said electronic throttle control, this is the third time i have almost had a major accident and ford tells me to call them when i have an accident or the code shows back up. they admit that they are aware of this issue but it must fail completely before it can be replaced under warranty or recall. also the truck cuts out at 60mph and jerks until you speed up. they advised they are also aware of this problem and come back when it breaks down.

Driving in city traffic, at approximately 35 mph. the electronic throttle control light came on and engine died. we were able to coast to gas station. the vehicle started right up and everythings worked fine. the next day took vehicle to ford dealership. after troubleshooting, they were not really sure of what was the problem. but they suggested changing the throttle body. we decided to take vehicle home. vehicle worked fine until yesterday, the problem occurred again. this is an unsafe condition. there is a large about of e-mail traffic about this same problem, and ford has not issued a recall. *tr

The spark plug broke in the engine costing a lot of money to repair. now another one is stuck and i cant afford to get it fixed. this could possibly cause fire and create a safety hazard. there are numerous complaints out there and this really needs to be a recall situation. *tr

I was driving my car when all of a sudden the accelerator is not responding and so i need to coast the car to the curve. i called the dealer and so my car was still under my extended warranty and so i took the car in and i was told that they replaced the part this was in march 2009, it is now january 21, 2012 and i had the same problem. the message board reads, check electronic throttle system.

2005 expedition randomly stalls at various speeds usually around 45 - 50 miles per hour. you have to try to get to the side of the road, stop and give the car a couple of minutes and crank it again. i have taken to ford dealership and i need a throttle position sensor. it will be $700 to fix. the person that owned the vehicle before me had already replaced this same part. my concern is i spend the $700 and still have the same problem. this is a serious safety issue, i stay in constant fear that it is going to stall at any minute. i can't believe ford has not recalled this. this is my second ford but will be my last.

While traveling 60-65 mph, in the fast line of a four lane interstate, my 2005 ford expedition suffered engine failure. i was able to safely get my car off the interstate without harming myself or my children. the mechanic informed us a rocker pin had broken and caused damage to a piston resulting in the need for a new engine. i am reporting the incident to you because when we picked up our car at the service department, having had the engine replaced, we were told that there were two other fords (1expedition and 1f150) that came in after ours with the same issue.

11/19/201036000
While driving on us 95 north the vehicle all of the sudden stalled. this has happened twice before while driving at speeds of 60 and greater on busy interstates. the engine just stops and the car must coast to the side of the road and sit for a few minutes and then it will start again and run fine for at least a week or two. recently this has been happening every couple of months. the first incident was in jan of 2010 on a trip from missouri to virginia. now that we live in virginia, near dc this is something that we find very dangerous especially with four children in the car.

2005 ford expedition limited ~83.5k miles vehicle had been driven about a half hour and the engine stopped without warning, unable to accelerate, brake or steer. coasted to side of road, shut vehicle off, restarted. took to dealership, unable to register code however i provided them with comments from online sites pointing to throttle control body failure causing engine to go into failsafe mode. dealership's first inclination without any codes is to replace a fuel sensor. dealership refused to address throttle control body despite my suggestion along with other vehicle owner's incident reports from online sites. 8 days later while my husband was driving myself and five children, after about a half hour of driving, he found he was unable to accelerate, looked at the message center and it said check electronic throttle cntrl at which time he put the vehicle in neutral and was able to restart. dealerships are not addressing this issue because the onboard computer or sensors are not storing these codes, the problem is so far intermittent. this particular dealership despite my research would not address the issue. it also appears ford is not acknowledging this either. so far, i have found one instance online where the owner of a 2006 expedition was reimbursed from ford for the replacement of their electronic throttle control body thereby acknowledging some semblance of responsibility. this newer throttle control body is different than the original, improved. why is there not a recall or even a tsb? how many reports of there out there, how many accidents, injuries, possibly deaths might be attributed to this failure? after contacting ford, we will have the throttle control body replaced. also, it appears, people are being suggested to replace the sensor first only to have the problem occur again - it's not the sensor, it's the actual part.

Until today i have been a loyal ford vehicle owner. my wife was taking our three children to school this morning and as she was merging onto the highway she was alerted to an unfamiliar code and alarm in the vehicle. before she could look at the dashboard the vehicle lost all power and would not accelerate in the acceleration lane, the braking and steering became minimal and she was left with a little more than a disabled vehicle on the highway. with heavy rush hour traffic rapidly approaching her and unsure whether they could stop she had to force the vehicle to the edge of the guardrail. the vehicle when turned off and restarted appeared normal. i then checked prior complaints on this web site and others and am appalled of the lack of action by ford motor company and others for not looking into this issue. the lives of three small children and whoever else may have been involved in this potential collision deserve to have ford acknowledge this problem. i purchased the extended warranty from ford and when i talked on the phone with them this morning, they told me that they would just keep an eye on it. when they looked on the computer to inform me my warranty had expired 200 miles ago they changed their mind and told me to bring it in. please, please look into this obvious defect. i am a police officer and see too many fatalities due to other contributing factors. i would not want to see one because of an organization failing to take accountability.

 1. there were no events leading up to the failure. there is no warning that this is going to happen or is happening. under normal driving conditions, my 2005 ford expedition simply lost all power and the words engine fail safe mode appeared. 2. this occurred twice (oct. 6, 2009 and nov. 16, 2009). i was able to pull to the side of the road both times but during the second incident, i lost the power steering as well and struggled to pull over. the consequences of this engine fail safe mode is that the car stops working. you become a sitting duck wherever the car has decided to go into this mode. you are unable to accelerate -not fun when this happened on the freeway the first time-and if you do not lose your power steering, you can pull to the side of the road. 3. the electronic throttle body was replaced for approximately $700. nowhere in the car manual does it let you know that this code could lead to this repair. i had a hard time figuring out what the code meant using the owner manual. the most frustrating part of this failure is that if this had occurred when i was traveling at 65 mph on the freeway, i probably would not be here to enter this complaint. i would like to prevent this from happening to someone else. *tr

2005 ford expedition 5.4 engine, misfiring 3&5 cylinder. rough idle. car has 127,000 miles and since we have had it i had issues with it idling in park and almost at times wanting to stall. engine has on more than 3 occasions while driving 60-70 mph on the highway become un responsive while driving. engine would run but no acceleration when the gas pedal was pushed; it was like the car was running in neutral. indicator light came on showing engine failure. pulled off the road and restarted car and then it ran fine again. ford svc dept. could not replicate the situation when i took it to them, so it was never repaired. (clearly there is a faulty problem) currently car is in the shop replacing all 8 spark plugs, coils and boots. mechanic indicated a lot of carbon buildup in throttle body. (seems to me possibly some other faulty component could be why i'm having to spend $800 to fully repair my car). *tr

2005 ford expedition displayed electronic throttle control failure message and engine abruptly quit at high speed in traffic on a curved road resulting in a simultaneous loss of power steering and power brakes. this appear to be a common problem for which there has been no safety recall. a failure like this with no mechanical backup for engine throttle control is a serious safety issue. *tr

2005 ford expedition - engine defaults to limp home mode while in traffic. has occurred twice so far but have been able to negotiate getting off the road. vehicle has restarted after sitting few minutes. *tr

While traveling at around 50-60 mph, the vehicle lost power and i pulled over into a parking lot. the dash exhibited a symbol implying the electronic throttle was malfunctioning. this is quite dangerous because it occurs while driving down the street with no prior warning. do not know yet how much repair will be as it occurred today. noticed on website comments section that this happens frequently with the 2005 ford expedition. want to know what ford is doing about this. *tr

I recently took my 2005 ford expedition for a tune-up at a local shop. the owner of the shop told me that the spark plug in cylinder #4 broke and is stuck in the engine. the safest way to remedy the problem is to take the engine head off to take out the broken spark plug. i did a research on the internet and found that ford's design of the spark plugs causes the thread to separate from the spark plug itself leading to the breaking of the plugs. there are also instances where the spark plug is ejected from the engine. i tried to file a complaint with ford motor company; however, they refused to call it a defect in their spark plug designs. *tr

While driving on two separate occasions suddenly the check engine throttle control light has come one. upon safely pulling over and restarting the car the light goes off and apparently the throttle resets. the danger is that when the light comes on the car goes into idle only mode. no accelerating, etc. there is no warning that this is going to happen and no other remedy. the first time i was in a carpool setting idling. the second time i had just gotten off the interstate and was able to pull into a shopping center. this is a major safety concern if it happens on the interstate. i have taken the car in to have a diagnostic evaluation and there is no known cause of the failure. after reading 100s of similar complaints online it is apparent this is a problem for the make and model that needs to be investigated. *tr

2005 ford expedition with error message of 'check electronic throttle control'. it has happened 5 times now. engine, steering and braking stop working instantly. i have to shut truck off to restart. all times it has happened while going 60-70 miles an hour on highway. ford has charged me over $1200 to this day for fixes, but nothing has fixed the problem. they also have no answer as to why it keeps recurring. when they hook it up to the computer, they say there are no error codes. *tr

While driving the car on the highway with children in the vehicle, the engine light came on, message came on about electronic throttle control , and the vehicle lost all functions of steering, braking, and accelerating. there were no warnings before this happened. after taking it to the ford dealer today, i see on the internet that many many many families are having this same problem with 2005 ford expeditions. seeing as the problem creates an immediate safety concern for not only the family in the 2005 ford expedition, but all the families traveling around the 2005 ford expedition... i feel like the safety board should look into this as a potential recall for 2005 ford expeditions. thankfully my family is safe today...but someone's family may not be so lucky. *tr

While driving my 2005 ford expedition (4 separate incidents) down the road, a warning message appears on the message center to check electronic throttle control. the vehicle loses all acceleration, accelerator does not work, i have to coast to the side of the road, restart the vehicle then it runs fine. very dangerous, fortunately no one hurt and no damage. but if this would happen on an interstate in the left lane in heavy traffic...?? very scary situation! according to my mechanic and a ford dealership, they cannot find a cause and no fault codes come up in computer. suggest possible fix of replacing the throttle body for about $700-800, with no responsibility from ford. *tr

2005 expedition eddie bauer 4x4 - got a throttle control error message, was traveling at about 55 mph in morning rush hour traffic on a major highway (dc/balt) and was lucky not to get slammed into. vehicle engine died, everything else worked. i shut it all down, turned the key and fired it back up and it is running fine again. it did the same thing about 5 months ago. ford shows no recalls. my vehicle has been put on a computer and no error codes came up. the computer is reporting nothing. this is very dangerous and other people are reporting the same problem... http://www.fixya.com/cars/t1061679-electronic_throttle_control_light_came#sameproblemcontinued. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford expedition. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle began to fail and the contact noticed that her speed reduced to 30 mph. she was able to apply the brakes and slow the vehicle down. the vehicle then shut off and took three attempts to restart. the dealer determined that the throttle body disengaged and the vehicle was repaired at the cost of $700. the contact is in the process of notifying the manufacturer. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was 68,000.

I have a 2005 ford expedition with 42k miles and i was going 30 mph when i lost the gas pedal(power) to my vehicle. warning light came on and then i pulled to side of road. lucky i was not hit from behind due to losing power to the engine. turned vehicle off for a few minutes and then turned back on. no warning light and truck ran fine. took it to local apple ford dealer who for $98 tells me i need to spend another $600 to replace electronic throttle body. ii have noticed from various internet sites that this is a very common problem with this vehicle and that it can happen at any time. after a long discussion with service manager i decided to decline the repair until i contact ford and national highway safety board. so far, the truck is still running fine, but i expect it is going to do the same thing again. this is something ford and/or the federal gov.'t should recall before someone gets killed. *tr

2005 ford expedition eddie bauer. during vehicle operation the engine suddenly dies and a check electronic fuel control message comes up on the display. this is extremely dangerous as it occurs while driving on the highway. after the vehicle is pulled over and ignition is turned off the vehicle will restart. this has occurred multiple times in my vehicle. after doing numerous internet searches this seems to be a recurring problem in multiple 2005 expeditions. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford expedition. the vehicle was purchased brand new from the dealer and underwent regularly scheduled maintenance at the same dealer. at 94,000 miles, the engine failed. whenever the vehicle reached above 30 mph, the vehicle would lunge forward and fail to drive smoothly. the failure occurred only once and the dealer was unable to determine the cause of the failure. the dealer had to tear apart the engine in order to locate the failure. after inspection, the dealer stated that the timing chain tensioner needed to be replaced. the failure was corrected after the timing chain was replaced. the contact stated that the issue should not have occurred to a vehicle with 90,000 miles and less than four years old. the contact paid for all the repairs. the failure mileage was 94,746 and current mileage was 94,900. updated 02/05/09. *lj updated 02/10/09. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford expedition. the contact stated that the vehicle stalls and constantly shuts off at various speeds. the vehicle was taken to the dealer on eight occasions for the failures. in january of 2008, the diagnostic indicated that the throttle body was the cause of the failure and it was replaced. the most recent failure occurred on june 1, 2008 while driving 60 mph. the vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the transmission failed. the dealer replaced the transmission. the contact spent $2,400 to repair the vehicle that was purchased new in 2005. the failure mileage was 16,000 and current mileage was 39,000.

Recurring engine noise which is more noticeable during cold weather. under load the engine , particularly at 2000 rpm, sounds like there is a manifold leak or a valve ticking. i have been to my dealer twice(out of business) and two other dealers three times with no satisfactory results. *tr

Our 2005 ford expedition eddie bauer exhibits the same symptoms as were reported today regarding camshaft position sensor on ford 7 ltr engines 1997-2003 - engine shuts down while driving forward , at variable speed: very slow to highway speeds. will restart on first try after coming to complete stop. message panel shows check throttle linkage or similar. first occurred around july 07 second time took truck to ford dealer aug 11 - they were unable to reproduce problem after testing for several hours (at least that's what the charge said). one month later it happened again, has now increased intermittent to once every 2-3 weeks. incident dates start approx july 2007 through yesterday 12/05. *tr

Tl-the contact owns a 2005 ford expedition. while driving at 35mph the check engine light illuminates and the vehicle started driving rough. smoke was also bellowing from the tail pipe as he pulls the vehicle to the side of the road. the vehicle was towed to a mechanic shop and they were informed that a bad fuel injector failed. they replaced the fuel injector but the vehicle did not run the same. the check engine light reappeared and they had to take the vehicle to the dealer. the dealer informed him there was a problem with the catalyst converter and it should be replaced. the manufacturer was called and informed him due to the vehicle did not go to a ford dealer initially they are not responsible for the failure of the vehicle now. there are no recalls and the vehicle was not repaired. the failure was 81,800....mw

Original factory spark plug backed out from cylinder head. checked remaining 7 spark plugs. four of seven loose. mechanic recommended using heli coil kit on all spark plug threads. mechanic mentioned that this was a common occurrence on ford 5.4 liter engines. if this is true, it appears as though a recall should be required for repair of cylinder heads.

My 2005 ford expedition suddenly and unexpectantly shut off in the middle of the highway. an error code of check electronic throttle displays on the dash and a warning signal sounds. all while the vehicle loses the ability to accelerate and power steering. after bringing the vehicle to a stop, it cranks right up as if there was never a problem. it has now done this about 5 or 6 times. we have nearly been hit twice by 18 wheelers as a result of this. this is an extremely dangerous problem. i have researched the problem online in hopes of finding out what could be causing the problem. to my horror, i found hundreds of similar complaints all linked to the 2005 ford expedition only. i have not seen this type of complaint for any other model year. i'm leary of even taking it to a dealership for the problem at this point because the comments around the issues have been that ford has replaced the throttle body and in some cases it didn't resolve the problem. to me it sounds like a recall is needed to address this issue. it shouldn't take a severe accident or death to remedy this situation. it sounds like ford is trying to avoid issuing a recall on this from the complaints that i have reviewed. if the 2005 ford expedition is the only model year affected, then there is something that was programmed or installed incorrectly on the ford expeditions from that model year. an investigation needs to be initiated before the fatal results that toyota has had resently become a part of fords future, and all because they want to be in denial of a problem which should initiate a recall to fix.

2005 expedition has severe engine ticking problem (sounds like a diesel) original complaint was before warranty expired told by dealer that it was the 3 valve motor noise. when it got worse at around 37k miles (1k) out of warranty dealer then tells me that there has been a tsb issued (tsb 06-4-7 original version was actually issued shortly after the truck was built) it is the cam phasers and valve lash adjusters and it will be $3000 to repair and now not covered under warranty. i have repeatedly worked with the dealer and ford customer care to resolve issue the last person at customer care told me its your problem just before hanging up on me. this after a similar pulling teeth episode to get them to fix the known corrosion problem that they had and denied before i found a tsb about that too, i now have another large rust spot on my back door that the will not fix either. all of this after i paid $4000 to get rid of the lincoln ls that i owned that they could not keep running after dumping thousands of dollars into a cop problem that was eventually covered under a customer care program. i sure did not get any money back on that. someone has to wake someone over at ford up and get them to fix this garbage they have been turning out.. *tr

Car keeps dies in traffic almost everyday and the electronic throttle control light keeps coming on . ford wants $800 to fix. with this safety issue, i believe there should some sort of action ford should take and fix the problem since it is always happening to this year and model so often. *tr
