2005 ford expedition has experienced approximately 5 episodes where it has stalled with no notice or prior indication of a problem. the problem started around 50k miles and happened most recently as about 120k miles. on at least 2 occasions the center dash indicated engine failsafe mode. each time, the truck could be immediately restarted and would operate normally. the only common circumstance is that the truck was coasting to a lower speed at the time of the failure. no codes are recorded, so no troubleshooting can be performed. replaced the throttle position sensor, but failure has occurred twice since. the next step is to replace the throttle body assembly.

My 2005 ford expedition has been experiencing intermittent problems and the only message you receive is check electronic fuel throttle. traveling at any speed the car loses power in the sense like it has been shifted into neutral. when this occurs you can step on the gas pedal but its like it isn't acknowledged. you shut the car off wait a few minutes and restart it and everything is fine. you may go days or it may be weeks before it happens again. it is a very scary situation when this happens. i have been so lucky not to have been involved in an accident due to this problem.

While driving my 2005 ford expedition under normal driving condition at approximately 35 miles per hour, the check electrnc throttle contrl indicator appeared on the dash console and the engine shut off. i put the vehicle in nutural gear and coasted to a stop on a side road. the vehicle restarted with no issue and i was able to continue on my trip. this has happened enumerable times with this vehicle. my wife, son and i all know the drill. why hasn't ford put a service bulletin out on this issue?
02/02/201165000
I own a 2005 ford expedition. this year model expedition has a known throttle control issue that causes the vehicle's engine to default to failsafe mode, which is a reduced power mode. this is a very significant safety issue because failsafe mode can be activated anywhere at any time without warning. imagine the implications of suddenly losing most of your engine's power at interstate or highway speeds. now, imagine the same scenario with your family on board and a boat in tow, a very common use for this type of vehicle. the internet is full of failed throttle body complaints, yet ford has done nothing to address this potentially life threatening defect. this is much more than a nuisance issue that threatens only the owners' pocketbooks. this is a major safety hazard and ford needs to do something about it. their negligence is shameful.

This is the fifth incident regarding this vehicle. in each case, the car was traveling at a normal rate of speed under ordinary traffic conditions. without warning, the car either lost power and shut off suddenly or lost the ability to accelerate and slowed to a stop. in each case the dashboard message center warning check electronic throttle control (or something similar) appeared. in each case the driver turned the ignition switch to the off position, waited several minutes, and then started the car. the warning message no longer appeared and the car ran fine without any further immediate incident. in this particular case (incident #5), the car was traveling at approximately 25 mph south on 14th st nw in washington, dc, when the car lost the ability to accelerate, and the check electronic throttle control warning appeared in the dashboard message center. due to traffic and street parking conditions, the driver was unable to move the car out of the active traffic lane, thereby temporarily blocking traffic. the driver turned off the ignition, waited approximately 3 minutes, and then started the car. the dashboard warning light was no longer illuminated, and the car was able to accelerate normally. incidents similar to this have been reported on various websites.

This is the fourth incident regarding this vehicle. in each case, the car was traveling at a normal rate of speed under ordinary traffic conditions. without warning, the car either lost power and shut off suddenly or lost the ability to accelerate and slowed to a stop. in each case the dashboard message center warning check electronic throttle control (or something similar) appeared. in each case the driver turned the ignition switch to the off position, waited several minutes, and then started the car. the warning message no longer appeared and the car ran fine without any further immediate incident. in this particular case (incident #4), the car was traveling at approximately 10 mph and was turning right into a supermarket parking lot in chevy chase, maryland. as the car pulled into the parking lot, the car lost the ability to accelerate, the check electronic throttle control warning appeared in the dashboard message center. thankfully, the car had enough momentum to safely pull into a parking space without further incident. the driver turned off the ignition, waited approximately 5 minutes, and then started the car. the dashboard warning light was no longer illuminated, and the car was able to accelerate normally.

Driving at 50mph in 2005 ford expedition lmtd. when lost all throttle control and had to try and get to the side of the road safely. check throttle control warning came on during incident. this was the first time at 108,500 miles. it seems this is happening a lot on this vehicle model. not a very safe defect from ford. ford needs to think of their consumer safety and recall and correct this issue. meanwhile my next car that was going to be a ford will be something different.

This is incident 3 of 3 with respect to this vehicle. in each case, the car was traveling at a normal rate of speed under ordinary traffic conditions. without warning, the car either lost power and shut off suddenly or lost the ability to accelerate and slowed to a stop. in each case dashboard message center warning check electronic throttle control (or something similar) appeared. in each case the driver turned the ignition switch to the off position, waited several minutes, and then started the car. the warning message no longer appeared and the car ran fine without further immediate incident. in this particular case (incident #3), the car was traveling at approximately 25 mph on a two-lane (one lane in each direction) dc city street. the car lost power completely, and the driver was not able to move the car out of the lane of traffic, thereby blocking the heavy line of traffic behind her. after several minutes, the driver was able to restart the vehicle.

My 2005 ford expedition suddenly stalled as i was slowing down to enter an intersection. the dash displayed check electronic throttle control or engine fail safe mode and then i lost all power. i quickly started the truck back up and was able to drive back home, but had acceleration issues along the way and the service engine light stayed on. ford service department determined it was the throttle position senor. no signs prior to this event that something was wrong with the car. apparently this tp sensor malfunction caused me to have my throttle body and fuel injectors serviced too. many compliants about the tp sensor on the internet. this issue seems to be a huge safety issue especially when you consider most of us purchase an expedition for hauling around our children. i had my two year old in the car with me when my truck lost all power in the middle of an intersection

I was driving 55mph on highway, when all of a sudden there was no power to gas pedal. the check electronic throttle control light flashed, i pulled over three lanes to side of road. i sat there trying to start vehicle continuously, finally after 10 minutes it started.

2005 ford expedition without warning stalled while making a right hand turn at an intersection. vehicle taken to dealership and informed electronic throttle body needed to be replaced. vehicle only has 60,000 miles. informed by dealership reasons for defect unknow. however, we were still responsible for all repair costs. review of internet indicates several ford customers have reported same problem with exact year and make of vehicle.

I have a 2005 ford expedition limited. my complaint is the throttle body failure. when driving down the road, the engine will shut down and you loose all power to the vehicle. i have had this happen at speeds of 55+ mph as well as speeds of approx less than 10 mph, such as while in a parking lot. this problem started in the summer of 2009, and has happened every month since, sometimes several times during the month. we took the vehicle to have it tested and were told it was a tps sensor. that has been replaced ($75.00) but the problem is still happening. i have done some research on this and it is an ongoing problem with the 2005 expeditions. i personally know of 2 other people that have had the same problem and have had to have the entire throttle body replaced, one of which has had it replaced twice now. this is a huge concern since you do loose all power and have to try to coast to the side of the road, while trying to avoid being hit by other vehicles on the road. my concern is that when this happens, the result will be a accident while trying to get the vehicle to the side of the road. the repair cost for just the parts is $600.00, but this does not include the labor. ford needs to recall this part before someone does die or is seriously injured, as it is a huge safety concern. ford and their dealers are aware of the problem, yet the only resolution is to have the consumer pay for the repairs. i am afraid to drive my vehicle now because of this problem. i do not have the old tps sensor, but the vehicle is still doing this and do still have the throttle body that is bad on the vehicle for inspection. when this happens, the information center in the dash tells you to check electronic throttle cable. *tr

2005 ford expedition 78,000 miles. in the last few months the car at times has felt as though there is little to no acceleration, almost like the car is in neutral. today my car stalled and i was able to drift to the side of the road. the check electronic throttle light came on. the car is at the dealer now, with a $600+ repair bill. seems there should be a check for such systems. what would have happened had i been on a busier street or freeway. *tr

I have a 2005 expedition and it just cut off! i was driving about 40 miles per hour and it just cut off while i was pressing on the gas. i had to coast off the side of the road. i almost got in an accident! a warning alert said check electronic throttle and i could not move it and just stop and died. i waited about 5 minutes and tried to start my car again and it started. the engine light was on and took it to autozone and the diagnostic says that the throttle is stuck. this happened to me last year around about the same time and just went away. the year before i brought the car from the dealership and it did this to me 3 days after i bought it. i took it back to get it repaired and they fixed it no charge. now they are trying to charge me. it cost 700 dollars everytime this part goes out. why should i have to keep getting this repaired? there should be a recall on this vehicle (electric throttle). there are plenty of complaints about this part. please investigate and see for yourselves. if you do research on how may time people have to go for repeat repair, i am sure it would be off the charts. it has a poor design. it could potentially get some killed, if not already. i was in the car with my children and i was scared! *tr

2005 ford expedition will die while driving and a wrench light appears on the dash. this has happened more than 5 times in the last month. the dealer has stated that there are thousands of these occurrences with the throttle body needing to be replaced at an $800 owners expense. the expedition is not the only model having this problem. *tr

On 1/23 my wife (5 months pregnant) was driving alone with my 2 year old son through the ca desert on her way to phoenix, az. in our 2005 ford expedition with only 35k miles on it. about 20 miles from blythe, ca three fuel injectors failed. luckily she found a ford dealership in blythe that was open on that friday and able to replace them. upon arrival in phoenix, another dealer determined that the catalytic converter was destroyed as a result. i would like ford to replace the remaining 5 fuel injectors before they fail. what kind of ford policy is it to extend the warranty to 120k miles on a known defect and wait for disaster? it is insane to not be able to rely on our car for long distance travel and always worry about this incident repeating. the cost of replacing the catalytic converter and resulting pollution should also be a consideration to ford? fyi: the injectors froze in the open position and flooded the engine and exhaust system with fuel i.e. fire! *tr

I was driving 60mph down the highway and the dash lit up with check electronic fuel control. i was able to get the vehicle to the side of the road as the engine turned itself off, no power steering, and limited braking ability. after a few minutes it restarted and i was able to limp it back home and i plan on taking into the local ford dealership in the morning. *tr

I bought my 2005 ford expedition in march 2007 with 21k miles on it. i have had to replace 2 different injectors in 16 months because the vehicle will start cutting back and acting like it wants to cut off when it stops at a light . the most recent replacement came when i drove it 5 miles from home and it jerked continuously the entire inside of the vehicle smelled like gas very strongly as well as the exhaust. the truck stays parked most of the time because im too scared to drive it and its a gas hog!!!!!! the replacement of the injectors are not cheap!!!! the inside lights will come on and go off at anytime for no reason. i tap the brakes and they come on, i roll the window up or down and they come on. i have also had to replace the battery due to this happening even when the truck has been parked for hours. i have replaced the oxygen sensor and a coli pack. its never ending and i feel like i should not have to continue to replace these things when i am obviously not the only one with this problem. ford needs to step up and take responsibility for their crappy products. i have 5 more years @ $515 per month to pay for this piece of crap!!!!!!!!!!!! *tr

Our 2005 ford expedition eddie bauer was driving extremely rough, was difficult to start, and there was also a strong smell of fuel in the cabin. we were able to make it to the nearest local ford dealership. they inspected the vehicle and informed us that two of our fuel injectors had gone bad, which had also damaged two spark plugs. apparently they froze open and allowed too much fuel into the system. since ford is aware of this problem they have extended the warranty to vehicle owners for the defective fuel injectors to 120,000 miles. late last year they sent out a letter to impacted vehicle owners. however, they only replace the fuel injectors as they go bad. we now have two new and improved fuel injectors in our vehicle and six of the faulty ones. we are concerned with the safety of us continuing to drive this vehicle. the engine could stop at any moment leaving us in a dangerous situation in traffic or in a remote area, and with the flooding of fuel into the system there is an increased risk of fire. there should be a recall on these faulty fuel injectors for the safety of the vehicle owners. i'm disappointed that ford has chosen to not stand by their product and leave their customer in a potentially dangerous situation. otherwise, we have been pleased with this vehicle. i recommend that the nhtsa investigate this issue. there are blogs online where others have experienced similar unsafe situations relating to these faulty fuel injectors. many have had to go back to ford multiple times already, as an injector goes bad. this situation could be remedied if ford would recall and replace all of these injectors whether they have failed yet or not. *tr

It takes 20 minutes to fill up my gas tank. ford put some time of restriction or rerouted the fumes at the gas cap. i have to actually hold the nozzle back and inch from the opening and shoot the gas at the tank. this is a very dangerous situation and i am sure much more dangerous than the original problem the engineers were trying to correct (due to a lawsuit). now ford is saying that they will need to put the car on an engine analyzer ($160) then lower the gas tank ($500 to $600) in order to see if the fume vapor hose may be frozen or supposedly there is a replaceable filter that they located above the fuel tank. my response was ...no engineer would locate a replaceable filter above the fuel tank! then the service manager blamed the problem on epa...as he is aware of other expeditions with this problem...i said i retired from epa..they may have required you to do something with the emissions....but they never instructed your engineers to locate a filter above the fuel tank!!! i have spoke with two different ford garages and fill that they are giving me a run around...maybe because i am a women and they think i will pay close to $1,000 to just get fuel in the vehicle! *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford expedition. the contact cannot inserted the nozzle into the fuel tank to place gas in the vehicle ,but the gas blew back out at him and he stated that it took 25 minutes to fill up the vehicle. ford stated that the repair would cost at least $500. the dealer would have to remove and reinstall the fuel tank. the manufacturer stated that nothing could be done and advised the contact to call nhtsa and file a complaint. the current and failure mileages were 60,000. updated 04/02/08. *lj the consumer was informed that engineers had installed a hose on the fuel system that relocated fumes away from the fill tube. their explanation was that the hose may have been frozen and not allowing the tank to vent. updated

I have a 2005 ford expedition, eddie bauer. most recently (2 weeks ago), my check electronic throttle light came on, i called my local dealer and planned to take it in the next day. i work close to home and have limited driving distance. on the way home, the throttle went completely out and the vehicle cut off on the side of the road and was unable to be restarted and had to be towed. my local dealer did fix it in a timely manner. however...this is not the first problem. we bought it brand new and within a month the fuel injector went out when i was coming back home from out of town, my drivers side seat adjustment went out twice and had to be replaced. i am short and had to drive with my seat all the way back. 2 cam phasers had to be replaced back in the summer and then most recently this. i have 2 small children and would prefer a dependable vehicle. i filed a formal complaint with ford and heard from them today of which i was told that having 49,000 miles on my vehicle it was not unusual for parts to go bad. i live on a hard surface road and drive to work, normal day to day activities and of course vacation. the only thing they would do was upgrade my warranty to cover the transmission. it already has the extended warranty. i am disappointed they would not stand by their product. i have owned 2 toyoyta's in the past and plan to go back to a toyota and a ford could not be given to me again. *tr

I own a 2005 ford expedition (limited) on a number of occasions my vehicles motor has revived up and i had to put my foot on the brake very hard to prevent crashing into vehicles in front of me... it also happened one time when i was going about 50 mph and the car for now apparent reason accelerated to 60 very quickly. i have reported this to the dealer on three separate occasions and they advise that there is nothing wrong with the vehicle.  Me husband and i own a 2005 ford expedition xlt (v8 5.4l). the truck has cut off on us several times in the last to weeks, without warning! it has even cut off on us on the highway. we were traveling 55mph. we have four small children that travel with us constantly. i consider this to be a life threatening defect. my husband took the truck to a mechanic, thinking oh we just need a tune up. two of the spark plugs broke off into the motor head. we ended up spending $800 bucks to have it repaired and $150 bucks on a van rental. in my opinion ford should handle this situation as soon as possible. it is a life threatining defect. we are thankful that we made it off of the hightway safely that day. but what if another family has the same problem....and they are not so lucky? i guess ford will then issue a recall and extend their most sincere apologies.

Stopped at a traffic light intersection to make a right turn. while i was making the right turn about 5 mph, the 2005 ford expedition stalled and all the lights went on. i waited for about 10 seconds to turn on the car. the car started. i stopped 5 minutes later to stop the engine to see if everything was ok. it took two tries to start the engine. i took it to a ford dealer the next day to get it inspected. they claim it was the throttle position sensor. i got that replaced for ~$340.00.

1.2005 ford expedition august 8,2010: around 12:45pm i started my car up to run to mcdonalds two minutes away from my work. as i pulled out of mcdonalds the car started to slow down and would not accelerate. i thought it was my gas so i pulled into exxon down the street to fill up on gas. i put $15 of gas into the tank. when i started to car up it immediately started shaking vigorously and a strong smell of gas and cloudy fumes came from my exhaust pipe. i had to go back to work so i drove the two miles while to car strongly shook and the exhaust pipe was producing a cloud of smoke that smelled heavily of gas. i got to work and called my husband. i turned off the car and checked my oil. i attempted to turn on my car again and was not able to get my car to start again that day. at 7pm i attempted to turn my car on again and it just made a loud screechy sound and would not turn on. 2.because car would not start we called harry's towing to be towed to a auto shop nearest to our home. our car never before has had any problems at all. 3. we asked the mechanic to look at the car and identify the problem. when he called us back he said the fuel injector was the problem and he at that time had replaced it already and advised us to take the car to ford due to the fact the he said the motor was dead as well. we then had the car towed to ford in franklin kentucky. they identified the problem as the fuel injector and that the motor failure was due to fuel injector problems. the headquarters of ford said we are now not covered under the extended warranty due to the fact that we took the car to someone besides ford.

2005 ford exdpedtion stopped running while driving at 40 mph in heavy traffic. vehilce would not restart. it appears to be a fuel pump problem. only 40000 miles on this vehicle. none of the dash board light indicators came on.

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) 2005 ford expedition [xxx] engine shuts down while traveling 50 mph, failsafe mode indicator light comes on. this has happened twice in the last month. it is a huge life safety issue when you think you have control of the vehicle and you actually do not. i have 4 children i put into this vehicle and i fear our safety. i have been told today by ford that the throttle body is faulty and needs to be replaced. this is a part that should never have to be replaced! cleaned maybe but never replaced. i have 61, 000 miles on the vehicle and this part should not be bad. i will be replacing it this week, but i feel that ford does not want to address this matter as i spoke to the service manager,[xxx]at al packer ford west 561-790-1100 and also ford corporate office at 800-241-3673 and all they said they would do is document the problem. how many people will crash or die before safety is taken seriously? why do dealerships not take responsibility for faulty parts. this is a very frightening experience for both myself and my children and it has been documented and verbally expressed to several people now. i would like to see action taken before someone dies. *tr

2005 ford expedition 5.4 engine, misfiring 3&5 cylinder. rough idle. car has 127,000 miles and since we have had it i had issues with it idling in park and almost at times wanting to stall. engine has on more than 3 occasions while driving 60-70 mph on the highway become un responsive while driving. engine would run but no acceleration when the gas pedal was pushed; it was like the car was running in neutral. indicator light came on showing engine failure. pulled off the road and restarted car and then it ran fine again. ford svc dept. could not replicate the situation when i took it to them, so it was never repaired. (clearly there is a faulty problem) currently car is in the shop replacing all 8 spark plugs, coils and boots. mechanic indicated a lot of carbon buildup in throttle body. (seems to me possibly some other faulty component could be why i'm having to spend $800 to fully repair my car). *tr

2005 ford expedition displayed electronic throttle control failure message and engine abruptly quit at high speed in traffic on a curved road resulting in a simultaneous loss of power steering and power brakes. this appear to be a common problem for which there has been no safety recall. a failure like this with no mechanical backup for engine throttle control is a serious safety issue. *tr

2005 ford expedition - normal driving, complete loss of drive power. comes up as electronic throttle. you must pull off road, turn vehicle off, then restart. this is very widespread, just do a google search for throttle expedition. it has recurred at various times always seeming to reset. ford want $700 to fix. *tr

The vehicle loses power while you are driving, there is no warning of any type. just all of a sudden your truck won't move. this can cause someone to rear end your vehicle. *cn
