ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

I bought my truck used from a dealership in january 2012. i had driven it for about 8 weeks when it completely died on me at a stop light before take off. everything was on except it would not go and the message came up saying fail safe mode. it did it a couple weeks later taking off from a stop sign and then after that it seemed to do it once a month. this last time on friday october 26, 2012 it did it while i was pulling out of a store into the middle of traffic. i was lucky enough my 3 year old son was not in the car to where it would have hurt him as well as others and myself. i have read many articles and complaints from other expedition owners about the expeditions going into fail safe mode in the middle of traffic. it is very concerning that they do this and the dealership has even made comments about it when it was examined. my mother works for ford and she has seen multiple issues with this. ford needs to issue a recall on these however they will not see anything wrong unless multiple people are injured or even dead. it is frustrating to know i paid over $20,000 on a vehicle that i love and need but is not safe for myself and my family. i have priced a throttle body with my mother's discount at work and it was about $210.00 after tax and the labor to put it in is around $450.00. if ford would fix this problem people would not have to pay so much just to be safe in a vehicle they spend so much money. please look into issuing something against this vehicle problem so that others are safe. *tr

I was on hwy doing 55 getting ready to take my turn off when engine safe mode message came on. i then realized that i had no power even though lights, radio, and a/c was still on. not being able to accelerate i coasted the vehicle to side of hwy as far as possible, turned key to off and than back on and it started up. i was able to get home without further problem and back to work. unfortunately i have a 45 minute drive every night and early morning to and from my work which it could happen again and not have such a good circumstance. there have been several complaints over several years to ford on this why has it not been recalled?

A warning light engine fail safe flashed and the engine stalled. i was fortunate there was a parking lot i could force the vehicle into, as i was in morning rush hour traffic in houston tx, and was almost rear ended. apparently this is a very common problem among the 2006 ford expedition, i have done some research on-line and viewed many complaints about this same thing. i checked with one auto shop, which says the throttle body needs to be replaced at a cost of $800.00, the ford dealer/service dept quoted 686.85. they both told me they each have another 2006 expedition in their shop at this time for the same repair, and have had several repairs for this same issue. i believe this is a very dangerous defect with an engine shutting down with only a half second notice. i am glad i was not on the freeway (in houston!) doing 60 mph. my vehicle has a little over 38,000 miles on it.

While driving my 2006 ford expedition eddie bauer, the engine completely shuts off. sometimes while sitting idle and other times while driving 70 mph on the interstate. tonight, within 1 hour this happened about 15 times where the engine cut off, i lost power steering, had to roll over to the shoulder, turn the key off and back on to restart...sometimes it would take up to 10 minutes to restart. i was lucky we were not hit from behind. i have 2 kids in carseats still that could have been injured. research online reveals that i am not alone. this is a very dangerous defect that could get somebody killed. *tr

Took my 2006 ford expedition limited to the dealership for a tune-up and was told of an issue that the 5.4l engines have. they mentioned that some 2004-2008 f-150, 2006-2008 mark lt, 2005-2008 f-super duty, expedition, and navigator, with 5.4l 3-v engine; 2005-2008 mustang, 2006-2008 explorer, mountaineer, and 2007-2008 explorer sport trac with 4.6l 3-v engine; 2005-2008 f-super duty, 2006-2008 and f-stripped chassis, with 6.8l 3-v engine may experience difficulty with spark plug removal. this may cause damage to the spark plug and leave part of the spark plug in the cylinder head. affected engine build dates are as follows: 5.4l 3-v and 6.8l 3-v before 10/9/07, 4.6l 3-v before 11/30/07. ford apperantly knows about this since they published a technical bullitin (tsb 08-7-6) to the dealerships. now the consumer, who was never told about this when they purchase the vehicle has to pay an additional cost for a standard tune-up. when asked why, the service department mentioned that the cost is for the removal of broken plugs that they know they will break. why would i have to pay additional money for damage done by the service department for an issue created by ford motor co. if the plugs are defective and ford knows about this, they should be responsable or a recall should be issued. this to me is fraud by having the costumer pay for their mistakes.

1/8/09 while driving at 65 mph on highway vehicle's engine fail safe mode alarm sounded & message flashed on panel. vehicle immediately lost power. i was able to coast to shoulder of road. turned off vehicle, restarted and was able to drive approximately 1 1/2 miles. i was in turn lane, started to turn left, alarm sounded, message flashed and all power was gone. i quickly turned vehicle off and back on to try and get out of path of oncoming tractor trailer. i was able to get just off roadway after 15 mins started vehicle, drove 4 miles failed again. it was towed to mechanic. after calls to ford and further testing the electronic throttle body assembly was replaced. on 1/30/10, 35 miles from home, driving on highway at 55 mph when engine fail safe mode alarm sounded & message flashed on panel. again i was able to safely pull to shoulder of road to avoid accident. i called ford dealer located in that town, had vehicle again towed to shop and they replaced an additional part. i called ford after 2nd event, i was told by ford that they are aware of the problem, however since they don't have a solution to it they do not have a recall on this. on 4/20/11 while driving home from work on highway at 60 mph the engine fail safe mode alarm & message flashing on panel. i was in far right lane so again was able to coast to shoulder before steering locked from no power. if i had been in left lane i would not have been able to get off roadway. (on 4/19/11 i had vehicle inspected, in nys, no codes were on this vehicle). towed to shop, after running tests and calls to ford they have again replaced the electronic throttle body assembly as it had failed. still no recall. this is extreme safety issue. i have avoided accidents 3 times, if i had been in left lanes i would not have been so lucky. this happens with no advance warning. ford knows there is a problem.

I was driving my 2006 ford expedition & the fail safe engine light came on & that stops the gas pedal from working.you then coast over to the side of the road & turn the truck off & restart it like nothing happend .this has happend 2 times about 3 months apart. i had the truck check by bob boyd ford & they said it needed the throttle body & gas pedal sensor replaced,i called ford & filed a complaint of how dangerous this is, especially if you are making a left turn in on coming traffic( my ford case number 1334700411) i then went on a ford truck forum & found that many others had the same problem with ford f-150 & expeditions all 2006 models. a person recomended that i replace the throttle position sensor ,so i did at bob boyd ford for $196.58. i also kept the old part.the new part is diffrent in size & has metal key holes instead of plastic.the fail safe engine is only suppose to come on if the engine coolant is very low according to the ford owners manuel, there was no reason for it to come on at any time in my suv truck. ford wrote me & the ohio attorney generals office & said that i have fixed the problem by replacing the throttle position sensor on my own & me paying for it ( case closed). ford never said any thing to me about replaceing the throttle position sensor to fix this problem.again they said it was the throttle body & gas pedal sensor.

The vehicle enters engine fail safe mode. at this point, the vehicle will shut off and you will lose engine power and steering capabilities. this is particularly dangerous when driving 70 miles per hour on the highway. it will eventually kill someone if it has not already. ford has dropped the ball on this one. the repair is a $600 - $800 throttle body assembly. ford should be eating this cost.

For the fourth time in the past 2 years the suv has shut down while driving the vehicle. the dashboad lights up, the steering wheel locks up, and completely shuts down while in traffic. no warning. have taken the vehicle in twice, but no codes have shown up on the diagnostics. this is extremelty unsafe and could result in a an accident harming my family, another family or both.

Complaint filed regarding a personally owned 2006 ford expedition xlt, owned from 2/2010 to present (12/2010)> three separate instances when driving the vehicle when the failsafe mode warning lights and all loss of vehicle control:steering, brakes, acelleration, etc. occured/ randomly during this period of ownership with no apparent reason. vehicle restarted immediately. all instances of the condition occured when outside temperature was below freezing (winter months) into a right or left turn. no evidence of loss of antifreeze, engine overheating, coolant leaks, etc. mechanic assessment could not find a reason for the engine fail safe activation. this is a significant, potential safety problem for the driver/passengers of 2006 ford expeditions experiencing the random occuring engine failure attributable to the failsafe feature of this vehicle.

2006 ford expedition shuts down while driving engine goes into fail safe mode which is like neutral with limited steering capabilities and no gas pedal use. bought vehicle in dec 09. this vehicle has done this approx 7 times. has happened while on surface streets as well as the freeway. very dangerous. at dealer for third time and they are giving a third reason for it happening. checked internet and it is full of complaints of exactly same problem with no resolution from any mechanics but several different reasons they were given. a definite safety issue! on the phone with ford customer service today about the issue. they will get back to me tomorrow. no recalls on this, apparently until someone gets hurt. this is another toyota issue waiting to happen. i am a state trooper and you can believe i feel this is serious and needs to be addressed. someone could be seriously hurt or killed especially on the freeway when this happens.

Driving to work via freeway, had just reached the bottom of a freeway off-ramp, at a stoplight. light turned green, had just started to go and the fail safe engine mode light on my 2006 ford expedition came on the dashboard, within 5 seconds the car turned off on its own, like taking the key out of the ignition. had it towed to a ford dealership, they ran diagnostics, said the throttle body assembly needed replacing. i looked on the internet, googling fail safe engine mode and ford and found this to be a common problem. asked why it's not a recall item or has a technical bulletin with so many cases of it, plus it's very dangerous. many in their internet postings said the problem comes back. dealership said to contact ford corporate, opened a cudl case for me to request reimbursement. wrote a letter to ford corporate, included internet links to all the postings of other people having the same problem, asked for $480.35 reimbursement, also asked what they are doing about this dangerous situation with the throttle body assembly. ford corporate send me a letter back, simply said i'm past warranty and unable to provide reimbursement. they did not reply regarding my question about what's being done about this dangerous problem.

Sparks plugs blew out right at 60,000 miles on 2006 ford expedition on our way from maryland to louisiana. started getting problems in north carolina. after spending 2000.00 for hotel, rental car and possible fix by firestone..it still was not working. brought to ford dealership and said it was spark plugs that blew and a common thing for f150s and it would cost over 7,000.00 to fix it and recommended trading it in. so we did cause we had no choice with the truck being in nc. *tr

I have a 2006 ford expedition with 50,000 miles on it. my wife drives this car with our children. about 7 or 8 times now the check engine or (wrench light) comes on going down the road and shuts the car off completely. i have looked online and have seen that thousands of people are having the same thing happen to them. from what i read it has something to do with the electronic throttle control. i know you probably get complaints all the time but this is very serious. every post on the web says that ford has no recall and that the dealerships are doing nothing to fix this problem but putting a new part on and charging for it. this is absolutely ridiculous. there is obviously a problem. please help me and others to fix this problem before someone gets hurt. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. while driving 20 mph, the vehicle stalled. the engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel and read, engine fail safe mode. after several attempts, the contact was able to restart the vehicle. the dealer replaced the throttle body assembly. after the repair, the contact began smelling a burning oil odor in the vehicle. the smell became stronger and then turned into a gaseous odor, which was also entering through the interior vents. the contact inspected the vehicle, but could not locate any gas leak. the odor became so overpowering that one of the occupants had a nose bleed and several other occupants suffered headaches and stomach aches. the dealer stated that the oil level was too high and caused the fuel odor. the odor is still present. the current and failure mileages were less than 66,000.

August 21 on the way to work (4 mile drive) the truck started to shake and lost power, check engine light came on, we took the truck to the dealer, and they can not figure what is going on,so they said the engine needs to be replaced. the codes are p0022-p0305-p0307-p1184-p2198-p2273 my family just came back from a 3000 trip ,i can only imagine having this happening to us during this time. i been looking for the same type of trouble to this trucks and found that there is a number of similar complaints about having to replace engines ranging from 38,000 miles to about 60,000miles. the price of this cars are well over $35,000 to having to spend another $7,000 with all the problems of our economy right now a normal person like me can not afford another rip off by one of the big companies, like ford. all i'm asking is that they take responsibility for this engine troubles and repair like they supposed to. *tr

There is no warning - my ford expedition just goes into engine fail safe mode and shuts off - no ability to steer, drive etc. was traveling on highway at highway speeds (55+ mph) when this happened. the engine fail safe had come on before but was a bit scary upon driving at a speed. the dealership states that the throttle body needs to be replaced. my vehicle only has 55000 miles on it - and from reading other forums i see that this is a problem with a lot of ford expeditions. it is in the shop now (at a cost of $700) being fixed, i am going to request to have the old parts saved so i can keep for future reference. i believe this is a major defect that needs to be fixed as it will cause a death one day soon - as the vehicle shuts off during driving.

Purchased vehicle in january 2006, brand new from the dealer. shortly thereafter, the back window was leaking. had the back window repaired, still leaks. the seal on both the driver and passenger's front windows were missing. took the vehicle back 3 times before this was fixed. after that, the engine began making a loud grinding noise. vehicle has been back in the shop at least 3 times, one time they kept it for a week, claim they can not duplicate. they then decided it was the a/c compressor and we should have the a/c off when starting the vehicle. tried it, does not work. now that the vehicle is out of warranty, it is making the loud grinding noise even more. at one point, we were told by a salesman that we should just call roadside assistance if we break down while on vacation. just what we wanted was to have our vacation ruined by a ford screw up. the dealer won't acknowledge that there is a problem and won't fix it. on top of that the dvd entertainment system that came with the vehicle won't stay closed, the cover over the motor for the third seat has come detached and doesn't fold up right and the air conditioner is warm when sitting still. all problems that a major corporation should not have on a vehicle that has been on the market for several years. would really like all the problems completely fixed or a replacement. driver's side airbag did not deploy when had very hard frontal impact either.

I was preparing to make a left hand turn into a busy office complex, and the engine in my 2006 ford expedition cut off. the system generated code was 'engine failsafe mode. i turned on my hazards, put the car in park and waited a few minutes to restart. the engine car started, but the fact that it cut off, without warning is extremely alarming. i've contacted ford corporate who said that there were no recalls, and that i needed to go to a service center. after researching the internet and this site, i am convinced that this issue should prompt a recall, but ford's cost-benefit analysis indicates that it is waiting until there are enough fatalities to make the determination to fix what appears to be a $600-800 issue. ford should be and can be held liable for gross negligence in their deliberate decision to disregard the engine failure complaints. i have been a loyal ford customer for several decades. that is no longer the case.

My wife, three kids and myself were in our 2006 ford expedition limited coming down a mountain pass in lake tahoe when all of a sudden the engine stopped! a code on the dash read fail safe engine mode. the steering wheel locked and there was no power, no acceleration. i was lucky to pull to the side of the road. the following day, i took the truck to the carson city, nv ford dealer and paid for a diagnostic. notes from dealer: road test could not verify. perfomed eec self test, has code p0104. performed wiggle test and pinpoint tests. performed recorder-monitor test all the pids looked good. removed the maf sensor. has debris on the maf sensor wires. recommend a new maf sensor. i put in a new maf sensor and air filter. in driving less than 3 miles after this was done, the truck did the same thing. the fail safe engine mode came on, loss of power and acceleration. i had to turn the truck off completely, remove key and restart. then the truck did not hold the idle and died. after a second time, the truck restarted. i am still driving with the check engine light off and have another appointment with the ford dealer tomorrow morning (6-24-10) to see what is going on. we are supposed to leave tomorrow and drive 1100 miles to return to denver.

On 2 separate occasions (both around 40,000 miles), the car just shut itself off, without warning, while driving down the road at about 40 mph. power steering and power braking both failed. i was just able to coast across several busy lanes of traffic to get to the side of the road. this could be extremely dangerous, particularly if i was on a freeway or interstate. the dealer's diagnosis was that the throttle had gotten stuck wide open, and that the car had to go into failsafe mode to prevent it from accelerating out of control. what if the failsafe mode fails? i've read numerous other complaints of the same thing happening on other 2006 ford expeditions. there is clearly a defective part here, and it is clearly a safety issue.
