I have had 3 blowouts at 60-70 mph all on the right rear, 2 with firestone and 1 with goodyear, also premature right rear wheel bearing failure that i feel have been caused by vibration at hiway speeds. ford has a tsb 96-04-16 that repairs this vibration at a cost of $1600. with the explorer these failures are a serious safety concern and should be made a safety recall made available to all 90-94 explorer owners at no cost . thank you.*jb

While changing my rear brakes last friday on my ford explorer i decided to check my spare tire which happens to be a firestone atx. to my surprise the tire had actually blown-out and seperated while in the spare tire rack under my vehicle. this tire has not been on my vehicle since july of 1999 when i purchased four new tires and put the best looking tire in the spare tire rack. i believe someone needs to look at this tire in the rack and document this before i reomve it. this backs up ford's claim that it is the tire, not the vehicle that is at fault. you can see i have not tampered with tis tire in anyway, there are no fresh marks on the spare tire system showing the tire has not moved in many months.  While driving home from sandiego, my vehicle seemed very unstable. three days earlier i had just had my 4 month old tires rotated, balanced and aliegned. immediatly returned to dealer to be told i was lucky not to have a blow out, that the passenger side rear tire had a 10 bulge on the inside wall. they replaced the tire. 30 days latter, i notice a similar unstable ride, went back to the dealer to be told it was now the front passenger side tire with a similar defect. they offered to replace, i opted to upgrade to a michellin tire. 2 weeks latter, i notice i am missing a lug nut on the drivers side rear tire. the big o tire dealer tells me the bolt is stripped and forgot to tell me.*ak

I have been unable to get refund from firestone filed on 09/01/00. we have called 7 times to be told call back, you are not in the system as yet. i finally asked for a fax number so that i could plead my case. they at first refused and claimed that a fax would only delay things further. i did obtain the number but they have not acknowledged that it was received. they are lucky, we had to replace two tires before the recall because we found tread seperation was beginning to take place. if you can please provide contact information for john t. lampe at firestone; i will file a small claims action against firestone for all 5 tires.*ak

My son was driving down i-95 in south carolina at only about 50 mph due to rain when he suddenly lost control of the vehicle, left the road and rolled over three times into a ditch and totaled the car. there was no apparent explanation for why he lost control. we had just recently replaced tires with new firestone atx ii. when we asked the tow truck driver about recovering the tires we were told that they were blown out. since this accident occured prior to any publicity about firestone tire failures we did not ask to see the tires. my son was injured and forced to miss classes at college.*ak (tiresize: 23575sr15)( dot number: tire size: 23575sr15 )

Approximately 18 months after i purchased this suv (brand new, 0 miles) two of the tires developed bubbles on them. i noticed them during a weekly inspection that i perform on the vehicle. i had those two tires repalced by a local tire store. about 6 months later a 3rd. tire developed a buble. at that time i had the remaining two original tires replaced. i still have the original spare tire on the vehicle, it has never been on the ground. i didn't get the numbers off of it however, with the defects on the other original tires of this vehicle i would bet it is one of the tires involved in the recall.

These wilderness at p235/75 tires are not part of the present firestone recall. the tires have cracks that run around the circumference of the tire on both sides where the tread meets the body of the tire. a firestone service center employee inspected the tires on august 11, and i was told that firestone would replace the tires, and i was placed on a wating list. on september 4, i returned to the store to determine the status of my tire replacement and was told that firestone would not replace the tires because they did not have the dl dot code. i asked if the tires were safe to drive on and was told by the firestone representative that i should replace the tires if i could afford to do so. i have replaced the tires. the tires were on the vehicle for 15 months, have approximately 22,000 miles of service and have approximately 9/32 of tread remaining. the tires were rotated frequently and maintained between 30 and 32 psig. i feel strongly that firestone wilderness at tires other than those with dot code dl are faulty and would like these tires inspected by a representative of nhtsa so that the recall can be broadened to cover other firestone wilderness at tires before other accidents occur. *ak( dot number: 8xhl tire size: p235/75 )

I had two early tire problem one bubble on tread area and the other a chunk 5x10 inches came off with no damage. in early summer a large seperation flap caused about $1500 damage to the lt rear quarter panel area, which firestone payed with no questions. later in august the rt. rear seperated with a smaller flap that did about $500 damage. a claim was not submitted here as the family was on the way to rocky pt and had no room to store the old tire. we just had to buy another atx firestone tire because the tire store wasn't a firestone store. just last month, july 2000 i had a noticable steering wheel vibration at higher speeds you guessed it, the tread was starting to bubble. i bought a used firestone atx from the dealer that used to handle my tires. i needed to match the wear on the other tire as 4 wheel drives require equal rolling radius on all wheels. i took the old tire to the firstone company store and was told by the manager that they couldn't warrantee it because that tire was no longer available. that i concider to be an intentionally miss leady statement when a total recal come out two weeks later. i was never offered a subtitute for tires! i also have a spare that hasn't been on the ground in years, since the earlyest tire problem. this tire is checked, pealing and has pea sized voids in that have fallen from the tread area. my guess is that this is caused be the high rad heat in the local and is guarenteed not from of road use. i decided to right this because on the tv news tonight there was a segment werein it was stated that there haven't been that many complaints. well--- phooey! not everybody complains, if a set of tire cost me a weeks take home pay i'd complain hard. i think a lot of better off people (or yuppie stagecoach drivers) just think oh well bad luck and buy more tires. i do hate to get screwed though. iv'e been waiting two weeks now for acceptable atx type tires that will run on a little snow or ice. look deeper.

Returning to home in florida after visit to tenesssee, in heavy traffic on atlanta bypass, everybody doing 75 mph, ford explorer went out of control, began fishtailing, heard loud bang on right rear at the same time. i was driving. three teenage children and two dogs were passengers. nothing i could do to stop the emergency fishtailing. traffic behind me backed off, vehicle rocked violently from left, then sharply right, then sharply left again, then began to streighten out . vehicles around me saw tire parts flying and backed off and allowed me to coast to the right side of the highway. on inspection, right, rear firestone tire with raised letters had no tread, and the steel belts were showing. the tread had separated from the tire, and all that was left was the inflated steel belts. i nursed it to the next exit and changed the tire before proceeding on home. this was a frightening situation, and nearly flipped the explorer, which could have killed us all. as i think now that firestone knew about this all the time, it makes me more angry and scared than every. please help. ronald c. caylor jr.( dot number: do not hav tire size: no longer )

While enroute to vacation on the coast of south carolina, our explorer had a blowout approximately 40 miles from charleston on i-26. the tire was only 4-6 months old with excellent treads, we had to get two new firestones installed at sonny's tire & alignment in summerville, sc. because the blowout of the tired occurred on the left rear of the explorer, my wife, who was driving at the time, was able to maintain control on the interstate until we could pull off onto the safety lane. at the time, we did not realize that this was not an isolated incident and we did not report the blowout. the firm in summerville that installed the new tires stated that the blowoit had occurred due to tire failure from tread separation and not from running over a foreig object. the blowout occurred on the side of the tire. we still have the mate to the tire that blew out , since it was mounted underneath the car as a spare. it is available for inspection if needed.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

On 8/15/97 we were travelling west on i-40 between winslow, az and flagstaff, az when our rear passenger tread came flying off our tire. fortunately, my husband was able to safely control the vehicle, reduce our speed and pull off the highway. we examined the damage, there was some small amount of body damage, but the tire, still inflated, had no tread. we removed the tire, replaced it with the spare and made our way slowly to flagstaff where we found a discount tire co. and had the damaged tire replaced, not with firestone tire, and we continued on our way to las vegas the next day. in november we took our vehicle to discount tire to have the other 3 tires replace and were told that they all showed tread separation and we were lucky. currently, we have one of those firestone tires as a spare as it showed the least to no separation. the dot # i provided is from the spare. i do not have the number off of the actual defective tire. no reports filed since there was, thankfully, no serious accident. i have receipts from both tire purchases and one from ford stating that we didn't have matching tires since we'd replaced the one, so they couldn't do the alignment requested that we thought was why the suv pulled to the right so drastically. we were told, by discount tire co. rep., that it could have been due to the separation the other tires were experiencing. we feel very fortunate after learning of the recall. we had never heard of that type of tire separation before and the tires appeared to be in great shape! they weren't all that old nor worn. this was our first trip in this vehicle. it was frighening but we chalked it up to a blowout type of incident and did not report it. the slight body damage has since been taken care of too.( dot number: w2hl1m0083 tire size: p235/75r15 )

On two occasions (aug/1998 & may/2000) i experienced a tire failure - total tread separation. each incident occurred at high speed in extreme heat. my explorer was fully loaded with passengers and luggage (driving from phx arizona to mexico). fortunately, there were no injuries as the tires held air pressure each time. there is body damage from the tread slamming the body of the car.( dot number: tire size: 235/75-15 )

While driving southbound on texas highway 288 between manvel and lake jackson, the tread on the right rear tire separated from the tire and came off. the tread damaged the wheel well, the corner of the rear bumber, and the trim below the rear passenger door. the tire did not lose air and i was able to pull the vehicle onto the shoulder and safely stop. this happened at approximately 6:00 pm and the temperature was about 90 degrees. there were four adults and two children under the age of 2 riding in the vehicle at the time.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

In july of 1999, i experienced heavy vibration (not felt in the steering wheel) and loud pounding noises on the vehicle undercarriage. i was at freeway speed pulling a small motorcycle trailer (approximately 1000 lb.) north of los angeles on i-14 and had a passenger aboard who can confirm the events. we were able to stop without accident and could not immediately see any tread missing. i had the tires inspected at a winston tire store and they reported massive tread separation. i subsequently replaced the tires but retained the defective firestones. these tires are currently available for nhtsa inspection.( dot number: h4bndfa016 tire size: p235/75r15 )

Traveling from western washington to helena montana i experienced a strong shake in my front end. i proceeded to drive home anyway as i had been gone for over a week and needed to get back to work. when i arrived home in helena i went to a alignment shop a few days after my arrival. i was told by the alignment person that my left front tire would not balance properly. after this i inspected the tire myself only to find that i could visually observe several bumps on the outside of the tire. i contacted the dealer where i had got the tires (i had only 5,000 miles on these tires), and they contacted firestone. firestone sent a replacement tire and the dealer put it on for me. the next day i heard about the recall and because of the problem i experienced with the one tire they sent me four new tires. i am satisfied that my tires were replaced, but i feel very lucky that i did not experience a blow out as i was traveling at high speeds and the tires was obviously bad. according to the dealer the cords inside the tire had ripped causing the obvious warping on the outside of the tire.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

When the incident occurred i had the original firestone tires put on the explorer by ford, although i don't have the model number available anymore. i was traveling on the highway at 65-70 mph on a warm summer evening, going from san francisco to my then-home in woodland, ca (a high temperature area) when i experienced a tire blow-out. i was able to avoid hitting any other cars, and thus there were no injuries. i specifically remember being told by the person who helped me change the tire that the tread had shredded off the tire, and there didn't seem to be any sign of a nail puncture, etc. i immediately had all four tires replaced with bridgestone tires, at a cost of approximately $400. i have the receipt from teh replacement tires, but have no record of the accident, although friends remember me describing the blow-out and would sign a declaration about it. i have asked ford to check their records for what specific type of tire was on my vehicle.( dot number: tire size: 15 )

I had been traveling on the interstate for approximately 40 miles when i noticed a vibration. i slowed from 65 mph to 60 mph. within the next mile or so, there was a loud bang and i was instantly going sideways. when i got the vehicle under control and stopped, i initally thought i had struck something on the road because all of my tires were still inflated. then someone who stopped to help me pointed out that i had lost all of the tread on the rear driver's tire. i believe it is significant to note that i had just had my tires rotated about a month prior at a tires plus store and they did not inform me of any problems with my tires.*ak( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

The problem started close to 6 months ago. i noticed anytime i reached speeds abouve 60 mph my explorer would begin to vibrate violently. i didn't think much of it at the time. i always keep my tires roatated and inflated properly, so i didn't think that was the problem. i recently was going down a back road and hit a bump. i felt my car jerk and then felt my tire was flat. upon exaiming the flat tire i observed that the tread had peeled partly off. at the time i was unaware that my tire was prone to this type of failure. i had the tire replaced with a uniroyal. up to this point i had been totally unsatisfied with my tires. they handle poorly in wet conditions and are noisey. recently the shaking became more frequent. i had the shocks replaced thinking that was the problem. the shaking continued. and last week i started reading the first stories about my tires. upon exaiming my tires, it was quite apparent that tread failure was the problem. i observed a large crack all the way around the tire tread on all the of my firestone tires and the spare. i documented this all with photographs. i was in a bind about what to do. i go back to college this coming friday, the 18th. this will involve a long drive at high speeds and carrying heavy loads. i realized i need to have my tires replaced asap. i began looking at tires and became concerned that i, a cash-strapped college student, would have to replace relativly new tires because of a manufacture's defect. lucky a recall was issued, but this has done little to resolve my problem. with my move-in day rapidly approaching i have been placed on a waiting list for tires. i felt the nhtsa should be aware of my story and the fact that i'm a resident of south carolina, which has been given a low priority in the recall. thank you for your time and i hope this helps you in investigating the situation.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

While driving on i95 in north carolina , on july 06, 2000 the right front tire shed its tread and left us waiting about four hours until the local firestone tire store opened so we could get the tire replaced and continue on our trip to maryland. upon return to myrtle beach , s.c. i had recently learned of recall and immediately went to the tire dealer that i had purchased my tires from. they told me they would have the tires in sometime this next week and they would replace all four at no cost to me. but they also said they would replace my tires with the wilderness tx and i dont think i would feel comfortable with anymore of their tires, so i will return to the store this week and see if i can get another brand of tire as my replacement at their expense. i would also like to be reimbursed for the damage to my vehicle in the amount of $1268.00 and i hope they will agree to this but i was told to contact firestone and the number that has been given on the national news and of course i can not get throug( dot number: tire size: 23575r15 )

While driving on the intown interstate, the rear left tire seperated, causing severe damage to the left side of the vehicle. i contacted firestone at the time with delivery of the actual tire per their request. we later received a letter stating their opinion of the cause of separation was no related to manufacture defect. although, appox. 30% usable tread was left on tire. as a safe driver i was able to control my vehicle at this time without causing damage to others. my vehicle sustained body damage to the left side. we have read the current articles relating to this brand & make of tire and feel this to be the same problem that firestone denied at the time of our claim. we still have our claim forms and information from the incedent. please let us enter our claim in this current event. thank you( dot number: unknown tire size: p235/75r15 )

On the road while driving from jacksonville,fl. to norman,ok. on 12 apr. 95 i noticed a thumping vibration from the rear of my ford explorer. following a visual inspection of the wheels i determined the vibration was caused by a swelling of the threaded surface of the left rear tire. nearing our destination my partner and i decided to drive on into oklahoma and have the vehicle inspected at the nearest ford dealership since it was still under warranty. on apr 14th reynolds ford of norman,ok referred me to firestone mastercare car service in norman,ok. the tires were then balanced and rotated and it was recommended i have the shocks replaced which i did with the top of the line shocks. the problem persisted on the return trip to jacksonville and continued to worsen. having been bounced back and forth between ford and firestone neither claiming responsibility for the tire problem nor able to fix it , i decided to replace the tires bf goodrich and have had no tire problems since. i feel like i've gotten the run a round about my atx tires and should have been compensated for tires and shocks not to mention the time wasted and the exposure to a hazardous condition had the tire exploded during high speed driving on my return trip from oklahoma. i was led to believe that my tires were ok and that the problem was merely an out of balance tire probably caused by bad shocks.they completely ignored the swelling at high temperature while driving at interstate speeds.( dot number: )

Dunlop light truck tires lt 235-75r15 radial rover at first problem was a tire blister that caused an uneven tire wear problem. i brought the tire back to the tire store, where i purchased said tires, and was told that it was a road hazard that caused the failure. no warranty coverage on the tire, even though i had put less than 50% wear on tire. on june 13, 2004, while returning frim a trip down to long beach, heading north bound on interstate 5 in california i experienced a complete tire failure of the left rear tire. the tire detreaded or blew its tread off and this caused me to loose control of my ford explorer ( bubbles, was the cars name since she was champagne colored ). i slid between the lanes of the highway trying to regain control of my car. i didn't regain controll but ended up rolling it down the shoulder and after bouncing around landed upright on my tires facing the wrong direction. some how i didn't get hurt but i did destroy my 1993 explorer. the truck i loved and since i didn't get hurt in the roll over i have zero complaints about my ford in fact i think i will tell them about the roll over and thank them for building a car that i rolled and still didn't get hurt. my dunlops tires on the other hand i have many complaints, one complete tire failure that directly lead to me wrecking my car and one blister that may or may not have been a road hazard. i would like to report this to you to see if anyone else has had similar problems with these tires and if you need to research into this. i know i am lucky to not have been injured but feel like you should know about this problem. thank you for listening to me. *ak, *gem

My original equipment firestone tires were found to have tread separation when i bought them in becuase of excessive wobble. i had these 4 tires replaced on my own. now there have recalled these same tires for the exact issue i had to replace them. i have written to firestone and completed all of their reimbursement forms only to be rejected since my replacement was before their recall. i don't understand how they cannot reimburese me for defective tires simply becuase i replaced them earlier. the nhtsa should force firestone into reimbursing all owners of these defective tires who had them replaced regardless of when the replacement took place. we were in just as much danger driving on these defective tires as anyone was who had them replaced in 2000 and was eligible for reimbursement. thank you. *ak (tiresize: p235/75r15)( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

I am a current owner of a 1993 ford explorer sport. as you know there is a nationwide recall on specific firestone/ford tires. on may 6th 2000, i was involved in an accident directly related to the defective tires, heading east-bound on interstate 4 (i-4) from tampa, fl to orlando, fl. i was traveling about 60mph in the far left lane, near exit 16, as my tire tread ripped/peeled off of my rear tire (driver side), causing me to loose total control, nearly flip over, completely spin out into the median and stop feet away from oncoming traffic (i-4 westbound). my tire was not flat after the incident, although the tread on the tire was nearly ripped off. due to the tread ripping off and flapping, there was extensive damage to the rear panel of my truck. (the debris in the median damaged my muffler and tail pipe as well). it is apparent that this was more than a close call, i realize that this was a near fatal accident. besides my being blessed, the only reason that i could create of why i am still here today, is due to the width of the median. *ak( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

The tire (rear driver's side) blew -- the tread peeled off. after the tire blew, and because i was going slow in a residential neighborhood, i was able to pull over safely. the spare was put on. i was very worried that this might happen to the other tires so 08/08/2000 i went to ntb and had all four tires replaced with michelins at a cost of $561.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

On may 30, 2000, i was headed to tucson on i-10 from phoenix going 75 mph and passing another car when i heard this loud sound coming from my vehicle. i immediatly started breaking and got over into the right-hand lane and then onto the shoulder. i could not believe my eyes when i had seen what my tire had done. the whole middle of the tire was gone. someone was looking over my shoulder that day because not only was i not hurt but i was right by a truck stop and there was a tire shop nearby. i limped over to it and they put on another tire for me and sent me on my way. i was not hurt, but the damage to my vehicle was extensive. i still have the tire.*ak( dot number: vdhl1p8485 tire size: p235/75r15 )

At approximately 1930 on november 25, 1999, while traveling south on i-81 one mile north of the wva/va state line the tread on the left rear tire suddenly separated from the tire body. at the time the vehicle was traveling at approximately 65-70 mph in the left lane. the tread seperation was abrupt, but the cords maintained integrity long enough to safely slow the vehicle and get to the right shoulder of the road. on or about 11/03/99 the right rear tire failed while in a mall parking lot. the tire failed through loss of air and a blistering effect on the tread and body. the vehicle mechanic who looked at this tire refused to let the drive leave their establishment with the tire on the ground. they would put the spare on for free, indicating their concern, not just an effort to sell a new tire.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )
