Defect SummaryThe parking brake control self-adjust pawl does not line up properly with the self-adjust rachet causing the pawl to slip over one or more teeth in the rachet.
Consequence SummaryWhen the above occurs, it can result in parking brake system ineffectiveness. the parking brake will not hold the vehicle, causing the vehicle to roll freely, if the transmission is not left in gear.
Corrective SummaryA wedge will be installed which will serve to lock the parking brake self-adjust mechanism pawl into engagement with the rachet. also, owners will be advised to release and reapply the parking brake whenever tooth skip occurs and will be reminded to always turn off the engine and leave the vehicle in gear when the vehicle is parked.
NotesSystem: emergency parking brake; mechanical.vehicle description: light duty pickup trucks and multipurpose vehicles with manual transmissions.note: if your vehicle is presented to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and the remedy is not provided free of charge within a reasonabletime or the remedy does not correct the defect, please contact ford at 1-800-392-3673. also, contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

While applying the parking brake on a incline or flat surface. the emergency brake failed without warning. the consumer drove the vehicle to the dealer for inspection. the mechanic informed the driver the brake mechanism needed replacement. the consumer informed the mechanic about recall(94v169001). the mechanic informed the consumer that the recall was not for this vehicle. *jb

Same problem as recall, nhtsa id # 94v169000. ford claims the recall work was done (per their computer records, while the vehicle was under previous ownership in 1996), although a ford (dealer) mechanic reports that there is no physical evidence of the work being done. i am concluding that either it was never fixed, or it was not repaired correctly. ford (both local dealer and corporate customer service) refuses to fix this at no cost. *ak

Parking brake goes to floor when pushing pedal. then i release it, and reapplied it until it works. but it has disengaged by itself many times now, so i don't trust it anymore. i am aware that this is a defect that ford has known about, and has released a fix, but the dealer acted like they knew nothing, and wanted to charge me for a replacement brake assembly. i have been told by a few others with this problem that the fix doesn't last more than a few months before it the problem starts again. so they give up on it and just don't trust it to hold the truck. i get my third party info from the explorer forum on the internet. it is a news group with many members and it can be found at rec.auto.makers.ford.explorer - thanks. *ak

I have received a copy of a recall #94s91 and the description associated with this recall is identical with the problem i have had with my vehicle since i purchased it used in 6/98. i contacted the dealer, and manufacturer, and i was told my vin # is not included in this recall. i asked why the recall list my vehicle year ,make, & model and i have the exact symtoms listed but i was being told again it was not included in the recall. i was told i would need to have the vehicle fixed at my own expense. i don't feel like i should be forced to pay for this fix when my vehicle has the exact defect listed and the exact year, make, & model listed. i constantely have to check to see if my parking brake is engaged because at least half the time it isn't because the pedal went to the floor without engaging the parking brake. i would appreciate a response back and any help you may be able to offer in this matter. thanks you very much. v. ron deliteris.*ak
