Consumer's concern over the handling by ford motor companies of the cruise control deactivation switch recall.*mr one nov 11, 2003 the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer because the brake light illuminated, brake fluid was leaking and the cruise control no longer functioned. the dealer quoted the consumer $5000 to fix the vehicle. the consumer declined the repair, purchased the part himself and replaced it himself. the consumer recently heard about the recall and contacted the manufacturer to see if he could recover the money he spent to replace the faulty parts. the manufacturer indicated that the consumer's vehicle was not included in the recall. the consumer's vehicle also experienced stall during acceleration, excessive tire wear, pulling to the right and transmission failure.

The consumer believes that the vehicle undisclosed transmission problem caused the clutch cylinder, slave cylinder, master cylinder and pressure plate to fail multiply times. *nm the clutch and slave cylinder was replaced four times, the mastercylinder was replaced three times, and the pressure plate had gone flat twice due to leaking. the transmission was hard to shift into low gears while in motion intermittently mostly in first and second. *sc

For the third time, my '95 ford explorer during normal operation has had the throttle stuck open and accelerate to the point where the truck will not slow down even while applying the brakes. even when the car has been put into the neutral position the engine continues to rev. i have to throw the truck into park and turn the truck off before the engine will slow down. the first time this happened a few years ago- i had a new transmission put in. the second time this occurred my mechanic told me that there was build-up which caused the throttle to remain open. this is the third time in a year and a half and i am now petrified to drive my once beloved vehicle. i can't possibly imagine selling this car and having this happen to another human being. luckily, the second time this happened a co-worker was in the truck and i have an eyewitness. please help me!! i am just a normal hard-working peron that is trying to get this problem fixed and am becoming more frightened by the research i am finding on this subject of the open throttle. thanks -dani menzel

1st incident: dec.12th 1998. concern: speed jumps on highway and surges only when speed control is on. cause: speedometer assembly binding. correction: replace speedometer assembly. cost to me $309.25 2nd incident: jan.5th 1999. concern: same as 1st incident. speed jumps on highway and surges only when speed control on. cause: 14401 loom, sensor & assembly shorted. correction: repair loom 14401 speed control diag. r&r sensor & assembly. cost to me: $308.87. 3rd incident: traveling on highway with speed control set at 70mph. explorer speed slowly increases to 80 on its own. i look at the speedometer, realize this and tap the brake. the explorer is still going 80mph or higher. i press the off button to the speed control but it will not disengage. i cannot stop the suv. i do not panick but i'm scared as i put on the emergency lights, press with all my might on the brakes and within a few minutes, get the explorer off the road to the shoulder. i put the suv in park, jump out of the car, look both ways, cross the highway, wave my arms for help and watch as my suv is parked with the engine stuck and running at 80mph or more. some good samaritans stop and i explain what happened. one of them approaches the explorer with caution and turns the ignition off and brings me my keys. they look at my manual and unhook the speed control box under the hood. i drove home with the emergency lights on (about 8 miles) going about 50mph with no problems then parked it. if another car had been near me when the explorer went out of my control, i could have hit them and there would have been injuries or possible loss of life at 80mph. thank you.*ak

As a past and present owner of ford vehicles, i wish to express my sincere dissatisfaction with the recent lack of support the ford motor company and its dealerships provide to insure the integrity of ford vehicle safety systems. i am writing with respect to a recent repair that was performed on the airbag system of my 1995 ford explorer. when the odometer read approximately 56,000 miles, the dashboard airbag indicator lamp began to illuminate. after taking it to dick ruhl ford at 7250 sawmill road in columbus, ohio for repair, i was informed that the cost of the repair ($425.45) would not be covered due to excessive mileage. in addition, two separate visits to the dealership were required to complete the repair since the source of the problem was not properly diagnosed initially.*ak

I own a 1995 ford explorer 4x4. i purchased it new and did not have any problems with the transmission until last year when i had it flushed. i started to work the next morning and the transmission began to slip coming out of first gear. i took it into aamco and they told me the transmission needed to be replaced. they also informed me the engine was strong, but the transmission would have to be replaced. i have no problem after it gets to second and third gear. it is really unsafe trying to merged into traffic, because of the hesitation trying to get out of first. if ford knows this is a major problem with this year vehicle, they should at least agree to recall these transmissions. i am sure most people have junked there trucks by name, but i am still hanging in strong 237,000 miles and counting, with the same slipping transmission. if anyone knows a solution to this issue, please let the rest of us know how to rectify our problems with the 1995 ford explorer transmission. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1995 ford explorer. while driving approximately 25-30 mph with the accelerator pedal depressed, the first and second gear slipped. this failure occurs on all road surfaces, including hills and leveled road and begins as soon as the vehicle is driven. the failure began six years after the vehicle was purchased. after the transmission was serviced at an authorized dealer, fluid began leaking. the contact took the vehicle back to the dealer for the third time and was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle is able to be driven, but the transmission has not yet been replaced. the failure mileage was 120,000 and current mileage was 131,000. updated 06/25/08 *bf

One year ago i noticed the overdirve light began flashing on my 1995 ford explorer. i was told by a local mechanic that my transmission had to be rebuilt. we spent $1000 on the repairs. now, one year later, the overdrive light is flashing again and i'm told that all that is required is to clear the code because explorers do this all the time. i'm hearing from several other owners of explorers that these vehicles have very frequent transmission problems which would indicate a manufacturer defect.*ak

In april 2003, the transmission in my 95 ford explorer went bad. the problem presented itself by the overdrive light coming on and blinking. subsequently, the vehicle would not accelerate faster than 35-40 miles per hour. the problem was diagnosed as the transmission and it was replaced by cottman transmission. since that time, i have had to have my vehicle in the shop on at least 5 occasions for replacement of a module in the transmission. as of july 17, 2004, this module is continuing to fail causing the overdrive light to come on and continuously blink. when discussed with cottman, i was told that ford was aware of the defect of this item but would only continue to replace it and not replace the entire transmission. since i am a heavy interstate user, i am concerned that my transmission will fail while speeding along the interstate and cause an accident. *jb

The vehicle has given us good service until may of this year, when a problem developed in the transfer case. an oil pickup tube had broken, the unit had to be disassembled and repaired at a cost of $1304.53. this failure occurred at 72,202 miles and seemed peculiar at the time, but we accepted it as unusual wear at tear. on october 21st we took the car into the shop as the overdrive off light was flashing. the service advisor (jason savidge) called later that day and informed us that the transmission would have to be replaced. this was a total shock to me as an automobile driver for nearly 60 years. having owned many vehicles (and driven many more) of various manufacturers both foreign and domestic, i have never experienced such failures. i do not abuse my vehicles and have them serviced regularly. as a one time apprentice auto mechanic, a graduate mechanical engineer with 40 years of professional experience i know that properly designed rotating machinery, maintained and not abused will last essentially indefinitely. i have retained most of my vehicles for 100,000 miles and more without such failures. i noted on your web site a number failures similar to ours, some multiple transmission replacements. i also realize this may not be a safety issue. but what does it take to get the manufacturer to stand behind their product. i contacted the customer service at ford motor co. and received and i am sorry but nothing in our records indicate ford motor co. should pay or help pay for the transmission replacement. dt

This is the second ford motor co replacement transmission to fail. the last one lasted 18,00 miles. ford motor company informs me that ther are over 500 backorders for this replacment transmission. if this is the case then there seems to be a serious problem with ford explorer transmissions. i've been given the run around for two weeks, told today 10/31/02 that it will be another month before i can get a transmission. this is a major problem and ford needs to be held accountable for producing inferior explorer autoimatic tranmissions. thank you, dt

Driving from san diego to lax airport. 1/3 of way there, o/d off light starts flashing, see in manual to contact dealership and to have vehicle checked. call rancho ford in temecula, ca, they said vehicle fine to drive, come in for appointment a few days later. vehicle not in correct gears, rpm awkward, too high, too low. then 1/2 back and hear pop sound, like gunfire, and see smoke coming from under vehicle. past experience with ford tells me not to trust them, so i pull over and call my mechanic. transmission blew cap off and cover undercarriage of car with trans fluid. mechanic said that as long as i did not rev above 2700, i would be okay. made it all the way home. had transmission rebuilt and reinstalled, two weeks later, same symptoms. this time new transmission. then 4 weeks later, problems occur again. take to aamco, and they say needs new torque converter, take to regualr mechanic, says needs new transfer case, take to rancho ford, they don't know what to do, and take to lake elsinore ford, where they run diagnostic, and find nothing is wrong.*ak

I believe this truck was involved in a rollover accident before i purchased it. i think this because of the bad fiberglass work on the roof and bad paint job. i also believe this because of all of the front end problems i have encountered. i believe once this truck is involved in an accident there is no repair to make it safe again. i also wonder if the accident the truck was involved in is related to the tire and rollover recall from ford and firestone. *ak

On tuesday january 16, 2001, the o/d off light started flashing while my wife was driving to work. i checked the owners manual for this status and it stated to have the vehicle serviced. i scheduled an appointment with columbiana ford for thursday january 18, 2001. i test drove the vehicle to see if anything felt wrong and all i could determine was the automatic shifting into overdrive was not working. on thursday january 18, 2001, i was shocked by the phone call from the ford dealer. they informed me that while the vehicle was in overdrive a part had broken. during this breakage, they stated that 3rd gear was damaged. the final shock occurred when they stated the repair estimate was $2313.00 for a new transmission. the final bill was for $2484.00. when i inquired about repairing or rebuilding the transmission they stated that it would cost the same as the new one. i called other transmission service companies and they verified the same conclusion as the ford dealer. this vehicle only has 67,000 miles on it and the transmission needed replaced.*ak

It should be noted that freedom ford is the dealership that provided a $2,772.85 estimate to rebuild the transmission again. we purchased the vehicle from colorado springs jeep/eagle inc. the transmission has failed twice. the first time at 55706 miles, rebuilt at a cost of $2,628.92. now it has failed a second time with an additional 51644 miles on the odometer. this vehicle has been used mostly for highway driving, as i commute a 101 miles each day. it has not been used to tow and has only been used in 4-wheel drive during snow storms. the upkeep and maintenance on the vehicle has never been neglected and there is no reason that the transmission should have failed unless there is a manufacturer defect. i have contacted ford and was told there was nothing they could do to compensate me for the repair costs. i did brief research on the internet and found that this is a problem experienced by many ford explorer owners. there is information that indicates that ford is aware that the transmissions used in these vehicles have design defects, are poor quality and that they have a high failure rate. however, ford has done nothing to compensate their customers. i intend to pursue this situation and i would appreciate any information, assistance or investigative research your organization can provide. thank you for protecting us. *ak

Ford supposely replaced our transmission in jan. 1999 due to a defect they could not explain, i paid $550.00, the dealer supposely paid $550.00 and ford was warrantying the remainder. the check engine light came on the vehicle 18 dec, 2000 . i told them that the vehicle was not shifting out correctly. so not to damage the vehicle i had it towed to our ford service department. ford installed an ait sensor at a cost of $293.78. the vehicle was ready to pick up on the 19 dec, 2000. due to the weather we did not drive the vehicle for several days, then after about 15 miles the o/d off indicator started flashing. i again called ford. i was told that we could drive the vehicle to the dealership. i talked with fred sizemore, service manager several times about the status of the vehicle. he told me that ford was bringing in a special computer to see if they could find the problem. finally on dec. 29 fred told me that the transmission again was out and that he was talking with ford about the problem. on tuesday, 2 january fred called to tell me that ford would not stand behind the new transmission. the person that fred spoke with said there comes a time when the consumer has to take responsibility for the vehicle. i spoke with lovia at ford costomer assistance this morning. she advised me that ford had a 1 year/12,000 mile warranty on parts and we had exceeded that. i told her that this was supposely a new transmission and that it should have the same warranty as a new transmission. all service on this vehicle has been done at the dealer and we had the records to show that we had paid for the servicing. we can show the amount of money we have spent on this vehicle in maintenance. ford knew when they supposely put in this new transmission that we would again have problems and will not stand behind defective equipment.*ak

O/d off light flashed on and off for months. ford would not admit a problem till it was out of warranty. rpm's would go up dramatically for a few seconds while going down the road. abs sensor went bad causing unexpected and longer stopping distances at less than 20 mph. thje abs brakes would kick inon dry pavement at slow speeds when turning and braking at the same time. almost caused a couple crashes.

Check engine light comes on intermittently since approximately 30,000 miles. no cause could be determined by several ford dealerships. at 109,000 miles o/d light began flashing. dealer diagnosed transmission failure and recommended replacement ($2558). 5,000 miles later same symptoms appeared (o/d light flashing). dealer diagnosed transmission and pcm failure - replaced transmission under warranty and replaced pcm ($264). 5,000 miles after that same symptoms presented themselves (o/d light flashing). dealer diagnosed transmission failure and pcm failure - both replaced under warranty. check engine light continues to present itself intermittently (typically on long drives). summary: 3 transmissions and 2 pcms failed within 12,000 miles. *ak

This is my 3rd transmission. my 1994 explorer had an ireprepairable transmission, so i had to upgrade at my cost to the 1995. in my 1995 i am now faced with replacing my 2nd transmission. so far i have been told the ford factory rep does not talk to the public. for each incident i have at least 2 weeks of down time while waiting to have the vehicle repaired. the transmission tech at town & country ford here in charlotte, nc indicates he sees this problem often with the explorers, yet no official recognition from ford. i feel powerless, and at the total mercy of ford. my bmw had 388,000 when i sold it and it never had transmission problems. my vehicle has been properly serviced, yet the ford warranty seems to speak for itself...inadequate. this is apparently due to an inferior, faulty product. ford needs to do a better job backing up their products, and needs to do a significantly better job responding to a consumer with habitual major problems such as this transmission. how does ford expect to foster repeat business if the message they clearly send is the factory rep is not available to john q public. what the heck is their job description? i know the factory reps from the competing mfg'ers do field questions and issues from the public. i intend to leave ford if this is the best they can do and go to gmc, or a foreign mfg unless i can get some acknowledgement and relief!!!

The transmission is currently being rebuilt. a defective part allowed transmission fluid to leak into the radiator, and radiator fluid to leak into the transmission. the radiator must be replaced, and the transmission rebuilt. i only have less than 72,000 miles on the vehicle. i did not purchase the extended warranty when i purchased the vehicle because at a cost of over $22,000, i did not think anything should go wrong with the vehicle. i would like ford to pay for my auto repairs, and a recall to go into effect so that others with this car do not have to go through the same experience. 100,000 miles is not unreasonable to expect a car's major components to last. *ak

On 12/20/01, i tried to go into 4 wheel drive. auto 4wd light didn't come on. driving it resulted in noise from underneath the vehicle: groans, loud clunks, severe vibrations, and difficulty steering the vehicle. next both 4wd lights started blinking. on 12/24/01, i took car to dealer. actuator was replaced, which they said was a problem in these cars. charge was $441.77. i noticed same problem. back to shop on 12/26/01. after 2 days work problem was identified as water getting into the transfer case, contaminating clutches, causing them to stick and grab. fix was to drain and refill the case. cost $205.45. he said there was a vent but this would not have allowed for this problem to occur. problem is less but still present. later, all the while still noticing the vibration, i noticed that both lights would begin to flash.the nhtsa site provided several tsb's that seem to deal with the problems: sb# 97314, dated 02/97; sb# bc0206970201, dated 01/97; sb# bc1011297020, dated 01/97. all deal with the transfer case binding or shuddering. also two tsb's recommending the use of a revised vent tube to prevent water getting into the transfer case: sb# bc0133970201, dated 01/97; and sb# bc1012797020, dated 01/97. dealer was unaware of this procedure and did not suggest doing it on my vehicle.i still have problems with auto 4wd. the dealer has replaced a speed sensor, eliminating the flashing lights. bill is now $700 and not fixed the problem, known since 1997. nobody bothered to tell me to have my transfer case fluid checked or the vent tube changed. dealer even told me that they normally would not check for this and that i should take it upon myself. since this problem appears to be due to an inherent design flaw and has been known by ford since 1997, within my warranty period, i called ford customer service and asked for problem be fixed without cost to me. they knew of the problem and the repairs but refused to help since its out of warranty. *ak
