On february 19, 2000, ed carney ford refused to exchange my recalled firestone tires because they were not currently mounted on my vehicle and i had other tires on the car ... this despite presenting the recalled tires at their dealership that day. the ford motor company has since confirmed to me that the dealership acted improperly, and that tires affected by the recall are to be exchanged whether they are currently mounted or not. i believe this is a serious breech of ed carney's responsiblities in this recall, warranting this complaint, and i hope that the nhtsa will take active steps to ensure that they do not try to scam other customers this way in the future. *ak

On april 20, 1999 i had my 45,00 mile service performed at a local ford dealership in dallas, tx on our '95 ford explorer xlt. during that service visit the technician noted the steel core exposed on the left rear tire; after close examination of the defective tires it was noted that it appeared that the tire had blistered and burst the outer core. since this was well before (16 months ago) the firestone axt recall our only recourse was to place the tire(s). in a effort to not put myself or family at risk we elected to bit- the-bullet and purchased a complete set of new michelin tires at sam's wholesale store. i wish to be reimbursed along with the other customers who are offered replacement tires or being reimbursed for tires purchased after january 1, 2000. i feel that i was was victimized by firestone's misjudgment, but unfortunately at this time do not fall within there 'specified window' of replacement or reimbursement policy guidelines. any help you can provide me would be appreciated. i have contacted both ford motor company and bridgestone-firestone and have been passed on from phone number to phone number to no avail. i am very frustrated with both ford & firestone as to how they have handled this unfortunate situation with the general public as well as myself.*ak (tiresize: p235-75r15)( dot number: tire size: p235-75r15 )

We purchased new firestone wilderness at tires (p235/75r15) from our local costco tire center on 06-27-99. our tires do not have the recalled dot serial number, but we had them inspected at the costco tire center just to be safe. the tire installer at costco pointed out that both front tires had started to crack and separate where the tread meets the sidewall. we were told to replace the tires immediately. costco will replace the tires, but has to put on another pair of firestone wilderness tires. i repeat, our tires are not currently subject to recall, even though they are also defective. at the time of this e-mail, the tires only have 22,329 miles on them and the tread is in danger of separating. it is my belief that all firestone wilderness tires should be recalled immediately! if firestone knew beforehand about problems with their tires, they should be held criminally liable for any deaths and injuries associated with their tires. please add my name to the list of complaints about firestone wilderness at tires.( dot number: 8xhlipy tire size: p235/75r15 )

Hate firestone, they replaced recall tires with at's. had atx. we also paid $200+ to have them put on 4 new shocks. said if we not happy they will replace with anything we wanted. would not have accepted the at's if he hadn't said we could get replaced if not happy. contacted them and asked for goodyear or michellin's. they have brushed us off. heard some got $500 to replace tires anywhere they wanted but since ours have been replaced once, afraid we will not be reimbursed. current tires are very hard ride and cause car to dash lights to go out, and car isn't as steady on the at's. these 4x4 at's seem to want to hunt and not good in mud. live in country and use 4 wheel drive often. hate these tires. will never buy firestone tires again! *ak( dot number: tire size: p23575r15 )

One of originally installed 16 firestone wilderness at tires in ford explore blew out prematuarly when we were driving on the south-bound of i-95 at conneticut on may 10, 1999. fortunately, no accident was involved and no one was injured. we just replaced brocken tire to a new one at nearby tire shop. i have not reported to anyone then. this tire failure was obviously premature tire failure, which is the same to the one currently recalled on firestone tires. i brought the car for inspection at a ford dealer in virginia in late august, but they rejected to replace it since this is 16 inch tire and only 15 inch tires were recalled then. i am reporting that 16 inch tires of this tiye are also in danger as we experienced and those shall be recalled immediately to avoid future accidents. *ak( dot number: tire size: p255/70r16 )

I identified the defective tires before they failed. 95% of each tire was like new, but the inside tread was warn down to the steel belts. i contacted ford, but they said the only thing they would do was look at it. i already knew there was a problem and declined their offer to look at it! after going through three sets of front tires in 75,000 miles, i convinced my front end alighment mechanic to set the angle of the alignment so that the tops of the tires were out 1/4 inch. this seems to have stopped the problem. i beleive that this was a design defect that was compounded by a flawed alignment specification. i'm sure that i would have experienced a blowout, if i had not performed my own oil changes and kept such a close eye on the tire wear.( dot number: tire size: p22570r15 )

In my opinion, the ford explorer and ford f series pickups have unusual front end harmonics problems, which causes premature and unusual tire wear symtoms. ford recommends to rotate tires at 6000 miles, on ford explorer, if you wait till 6,000 miles the tires will have unusual tire wear to the point that rotating the front to the rear, and hope the rear tires will correct themselves within next 6000 rotation will not occur. in other words, the ford explorer will wear tires to unusual limits within 6,000 miles to where rotation will not take care of the problem within the next 6000miles. i bought 4 brand new goodyear wrangler rt's at 28,000 miles, they needed rotated far before 34,000 miles, goodyear said wait until the 34,000 miles which i did. i rotated the tires again at 40,000 miles and traded vehicle off at 41,000 miles. the tires were of good tread but worn in a crazy fashion in an irregular manner. 4 new shocks did not help, the ford garage checked the alignment and stated the vehicle was within specs. i bought a ford f-250 with goodyear at's, and it to seems to be wearing the tires funny. i do not drive erratic and do keep the tire pressure to the recommended psi. for years, when ford had the twin i-beam front suspension on its p/u's, the tires wore funny and also would not last till the 6000 mile rotation point. ford has had a problem with very unusual tire wear for years, and it must be with ford's suspension system, weight to ground pressures or harmonics, but they have a very serious design flaw which effects its tires to wear unusally on the ford explorer series and the ford f series, this is a certainty. the problem does not just effect firestone tires!!!!!!!( dot number: tire size: p235r75-15 )

Two weeks ago we brought the car to a firestone dealer for the recall. they put us on a waiting list and said not to worry, they looked at the tires and they were fine. yesterday my wife was driving on the freeway and the tire came apart. she narrowly avoided an accident as she was slowing down to exit the freeway. upon inspection, the tire had a major hole from separation, not from any foreign object. today we bought new tires because the firestone dealer still did not have any replacement tires.( dot number: tire size: p235r15 )

Fluid which was later confirmed to be oil from overflow tank spilled out on brakes on passenger side. i had to drive 2 hours back to north carolina because the dealership in galax, va closed at noon on saturdays. if i was by myself it would be a different story but i had my child with me. town and country ford confirmed the situation and stated that ford had sent out a memo saying if the vehicle was in warrantee the could put the cover on to prevent this problem but due to my mileage i had to pay $375.oo not including parts to have this taking care of. my question is if they put this device on and knew this could happen why not warn the consumer instead of finding out this way and why should i have to pay for a potential safety hazard which was not of my making. i called the 800 number on several occasions; got a claims number and that was it. the second time they said call town and country ford which the regional rep still hasn't responded. next, i sent them a e-mail stating the problem and still no response. on the tires, which i had to replace myself, except for the spare which is a firestone, since the warranty was not honored stating that since they were only they were only the stateside receiving dealership they were not responsible. the tires blew out less than two weeks after picking up the vehicle. i am very displeased with ford. according to the distance of travel i have resorted to renting so i would not have to worry about getting into an accident with my child in the vehicle. this is unacceptable and needs to be addressed. i can replace a vehicle but not a life. however, i refuse to pay for something which was already there to begin with. thanking you in advance for your time and attention in this matter. *ak

While returning from vacation, i was traveling north on hwy. 75 in howe, tx, at 70mph when i heard the tire begin making noise and then it blew out. the blowout caused me to swerve uncontrollably (90 degrees to the road 3 times, across both lanes) before regaining control and allowing me to get safely off of the highway. there were luckily no other cars in the immediate area at this instant. the tire tread had separated from the casing and shredded. also in the car were my wife, 17 year old daughter, and my daughters friend. the tire caused damage in the wheel well/rear quarter panel and rocker panel area of the car as well as cracking the rear taillight lens and damaging the aluminum wheel.( dot number: vduujba227 tire size: p225-70r15 )

This report relates to the current tire problems with ford explorer vehicles. my previous letter to nhtsa is dated 13 may 1997. you need to go back and reread this letter. ford motor company is deliberately and flagrantly putting incorrect tire pressure labels into all ford explorer trucks. the reason is that the truck rides better with lower tire pressure (26 pounds). fords own mechanics will tell you that you need at least 35 pounds of air pressure to avoid premature tire wear. then when you go back to ford and try to get them to replace your damaged tires (if they don't fail first), they stonewall all your letters and phone calls. trust me, because i went thru the whole process and got no where with ford. they don't care about premature tire wear or damaged/unsafe tires, they just want a nice soft ride in order to keep selling ford explorer trucks. if you put the proper air pressure into the tires (35 pounds), the truck rides hard and rough due to the suspension system. you folks need to check this out, ford is literally getting away with murder here. arj

While driving to work on may 30, 2000, the firestone atx tire's outer surface split off from the rest of the tire. about 30% of the tread split from the tire resulting in damage to the rear wheel well body damage at the rear and tearing off plastic trim. this occurred on a particularly danagerous stretch of road through tijeras canyon east of albuquerque, new mexico. our son was fortunate to maintain control of the vehicle and get off the freeway to change the tire. when he took the tire to firestone tire at 9500 montgomery ne, albuquerque, nm 87111, tel: 505-293-4921, he was told he must buy a new tire and that he could mail the defective tire somewhere and then get part of it reimbursed. firestone implies that he must have been responsible for the damage. this tire and the four others on the explorer have been replaced this date with four new michelin tires. we want nothing more to do with firestone tires. the cost of replacing the tires was over $500 including tax, balancing, caps. firestone's recall and offer to replace tires of the same kind would be unacceptable to us. we have lost total confidence in this company. it is despicable that they have covered up the defects in their tires for this long and that people have lost their lives. they don't deserve to be in business. thank you for the opportunity to register our complaint. the timeim from the vehicle.casing.( dot number: vnhl p8 tire size: p235/75r15 )

On may 9, 1998 my husband and i purchased a used 1995 ford explorer from hooks ford in granbury. at the time of purchase my husband commented on one of the tires. the salesman assured us he would have the service dept. check the tires. after merely rotating the tires, they declared it safe. three days later, may 12, 1998 while driving home to austin, the rear driver's side tire blew out and caused the vehicle to flip over and roll 5 1/2 times. a four year-old child was thrown through a window and survived. a second child restrained in a car seat was physically unharmed. the driver, myself, remained in the vehicle as it rolled but my seat belt failed and i sustained a compression fracture of my neck, laceration of my head and ear, and went into a coma. we reported the incident to the dealership and to ford and never heard back from either. we consulted an attorney and because we no longer had the vehicle in hand, he couldn't prove anything. my husband was following the explorer in a u-haul and watched the entire incident. this accident changed my life, as i sustained permenant injuries. our family was devistated. if there is every a class action suit or anything we could do to prevent another family from enduring what we went through. please let us know! we do have pictures from the accident and proof i was wearing my seat belt, which failed. we do have a photo of the tire that blew, causing the wreck.*ak

We don't have the recall tires or a problem on our vehicle. but, rather suspect tread separation being caused by anti-lock braking system and disk breaks on all 4 wheels. this can cause more breaking/shear stress on the tread over time. running at high-speed doesn't simulate breaking, particularly in heavy stop-go commuting which many vehicles are now being used for. then when they are taken on long high-speed drives, the weakened tread is subject to failure. testing should include anti-lock brake surging tests and radial break-load simulation.( dot number: )

We suffered a sudden tire failure on the left rear wheel while traveling northbound on i10 between tucson and phoenix and towing a 1970 vw beetle. just prior to the tire failure, i felt something was not right, so i stopped the vehicle on the shoulder of the interstate and inspected the hitch, the vw beetle and the rear tires on my explorer and found nothing of concern. as i was getting back up to speed, the tire tread on the rear left tire came totally off and the explorer felt like i was driving on ice, essentially no steering without danger of losing control. i stabilized the vehilcle but it gradually slide to the left and i sensed that if i tried to correct the car would go out of control. fortunately, i was in the right lane on a two lane highway with no one around but i the car gradually move to the left slowing slowly; when the beetle caught the shoulder gravel we launched into to a roll over. we rolled twice and landed upright and the treadless tire was still inflated. towing the beetle provided a substantial amount of drag slowing both vehicles lessening the severity of the explorer's roll. when the beetle broke loose during the roll it took a lot of momentum with it as it rolled much further than the explorer causing the explorer to hit on both roof edges on subsequent rolls and landing on the tires without the airbags deploying; both passenger were wearing seatbelts and despite sprains, bruises and scratches we walked away from the accident. however, both cars were totaled and contents damaged and lost. a few weeks before this, i had the front tire develop a severe bump and took it to my local firestone dealer and bought new front tire and asked them to check the rear tires which still had plenty of tread depth which by the way the front tire that developed the bump also had plenty of tread left. firestone dealer assured me the back tires did not need replacing. *ak( dot number: )

Vehicle was being operated on us60 (freeway) in mesa az at approximately 60 mph in the center lane of a 3 lane roadway. all was normal with no vibrations. there was an instant bang with immediate onset of major vibrations and the vehicle pulled initially to the left and then back to the right. there was traffic to the left front and right rear at the time of the event. when traffic cleared the vehicle was pulled off to the right shoulder. the right rear tire had lost all but a 1 inch strip of the tread surface over the complete circumference of the tire. the tire still had air pressure and due to the shoulder hazard on the freeway, the vehicle was driven to the next exit where the tire was changed in a parking lot. there was obviously a very large piece of tire rubber that was thrown out into traffic and not recovered. it is fortunate that this was rather late hour with little traffic. had this event occurred during rush hour with solid traffic it would almost certainly have resulted in secondary damage or collateral accidents. has this type of tire disintegration been a reported hazard for this type of tire in the past ? this mishap was reported to the firestone tire co. and they requested that the tire be returned to bfts, 1515 elm hill pike #405, nashville, tn. 37210-3615; case # 017918. the tire was shipped via ups on 08/04/99, package id: 106576, tracking ref: 1z85e4270310251306.( dot number: vnhl1pm474 tire size: 23575r15xl )
