This is a complaint about ford's recall process. i recently received a safety recall notice regarding a fire hazard. i have not owned my 1995 explorer for at least five years. when i called the number listed in the recall notice i got a department at ford - the man said they contract out their recalls to a third party and that he could not help me, nor could he give me their number. he said the company gets owner information by using the dmv. if they had done that they would know i have not owned this vehicle in many years. this recall notice was about a fire hazard and obviously will not get to the person who may now own the vehicle, so it isn't a very effective recall. the third party company who is doing this for ford is not doing a very good job on something as critical as a safety recall. *tr

Service brakes, hydraulic details: i took my 95 explorer in for a recall (09s09) for a speed control deactivation switch which may pose a risk of fire if it leaked. when i got my veh. back i looked under the hood to check their work. (i am a mechanic my self by occupation) they had replaced the pigtail to the switch but not the switch itself. the letter talked about the switch and not a pigtail leaking brake fluid. the switch is mounted on the master cly.above the exhaust manifold area. the recall intent was to have ford replace the pigtail and switch or the switch but only if the switch was leaking. the service manager would not give me any explanation. is ford changing the wrong part. i am not sure how the pig tail will stop the brake fluid from leaking. *tr

I was driving a 95 ford explorer south bound on us 95 at approximately 70 mph, when the vehicle began accelerating on it's own. when i took my foot off the accelerator the vehicle kept accelerating on it's own even with the cruise control off and my foot off the accelerator pedal. i then tried to apply the brakes but since the vehicle was accelerating the explorer just shook. i also double checked the cruise control and it was in fact off and tried to pump the gas to see if the pedal was stuck but neither worked. when the vehicle reached approximately 85 mph i attempted to shift into neutral when the vehicle skidded out of control. the skid mark was about 350 feet long and then the explorer left the road and rolled a few times until it came to a stop on the driver's side with the engine still roaring. the engine only stopped when passenger turned off the ignition key since the driver was unconscious. *jb

1st incident: dec.12th 1998. concern: speed jumps on highway and surges only when speed control is on. cause: speedometer assembly binding. correction: replace speedometer assembly. cost to me $309.25 2nd incident: jan.5th 1999. concern: same as 1st incident. speed jumps on highway and surges only when speed control on. cause: 14401 loom, sensor & assembly shorted. correction: repair loom 14401 speed control diag. r&r sensor & assembly. cost to me: $308.87. 3rd incident: traveling on highway with speed control set at 70mph. explorer speed slowly increases to 80 on its own. i look at the speedometer, realize this and tap the brake. the explorer is still going 80mph or higher. i press the off button to the speed control but it will not disengage. i cannot stop the suv. i do not panick but i'm scared as i put on the emergency lights, press with all my might on the brakes and within a few minutes, get the explorer off the road to the shoulder. i put the suv in park, jump out of the car, look both ways, cross the highway, wave my arms for help and watch as my suv is parked with the engine stuck and running at 80mph or more. some good samaritans stop and i explain what happened. one of them approaches the explorer with caution and turns the ignition off and brings me my keys. they look at my manual and unhook the speed control box under the hood. i drove home with the emergency lights on (about 8 miles) going about 50mph with no problems then parked it. if another car had been near me when the explorer went out of my control, i could have hit them and there would have been injuries or possible loss of life at 80mph. thank you.*ak

Accelerator pedal and mounting bracket broke off of the firewall under the dash board and stuck in the accelerated position causing excessive speed and lost of control of the vehicle. closer inspection of the metal bracket that holds the accelerator rod and pedal broke off the firewall. weld broke, the bracket in question has holes drilled into it at the top and bottom a diameter of about 7/16 but bolts and nuts are missing. owner resecured this bracket by drilling thru the firewall and secured the same with two bolts, two nuts and two washer. this problem also affected my 1996 explorer.

I have experienced an under the hood fire on my 1995 ford explorer which i believe was caused by a faulty speed control deactivation switch. my vehicle had begun to exhibit symptoms which have been described in relation to recall campaign number 05v388000. specifically, the cruise control had stopped functioning, brake fluid was leaking around the switch and my vehicle had started blowing fuses. on october 29th my fiance drove the vehicle to work. shortly after having arrived at work, someone interrupted a meeting she was having with her supervisor to inform her that her vehicle was on fire. the fire was quickly extinguished and the vehicle was not a total loss. in fact, the damage looks relatively minor to me. however the local ford dealership has given me an estimate for repairs in the amount of $12860.02. i have researched and determined that the switch for my explorer is the exact same switch as is used on the 1995 ford f-150, which is the subject of a recall for this very issue. the part number in question for the explorer is f3tz9f924bb. the part number for the f-150 is f3tz9f924b. a parts sales person at the ford dealership has informed me that these parts are identical and has faxed me information to prove this. i also have very good photographs of the damage, as well as the vehicle. the vehicle has not been touched since the fire other than to be towed to the dealership. i believe the estimate for repairs is based on a visual inspection. the fire department was called, so there may be an official report available. *nm

Consumer's concern over the handling by ford motor companies of the cruise control deactivation switch recall.*mr one nov 11, 2003 the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer because the brake light illuminated, brake fluid was leaking and the cruise control no longer functioned. the dealer quoted the consumer $5000 to fix the vehicle. the consumer declined the repair, purchased the part himself and replaced it himself. the consumer recently heard about the recall and contacted the manufacturer to see if he could recover the money he spent to replace the faulty parts. the manufacturer indicated that the consumer's vehicle was not included in the recall. the consumer's vehicle also experienced stall during acceleration, excessive tire wear, pulling to the right and transmission failure.

While putting car in reverse, car took off backwards when consumer took foot off the brakes without pushing on the accelerator. consumer hit a tree, then put car in drive with foot still on the brake, and tires started spinning. furthermore, gas pedal was stuck like it was in cruise control, and car took off into a 3 foot retainer wall and went over it. consumr was wearing a safety belt. *ak
