I have tried to receive reimbursement from ford and firestone ever since august 2000 for four failed firestone wilderness atx's. from the beginning we had problems with these tires on my ford explorer. when we traveled at 60mph, the vehicle would shake violently. we took the vehicle to the ford and firestone dealers who told us they could find nothing wrong. so for the next 2 1/2 years, we did not dare drive above 60mph. while these tires were on the explorer, i made sure to have them rotated and properly inflated per the directions on the tires. about two years later, we noticed extreme wear on the outer perimeters of all four tires, as was noticed by the place where we got the tires rotated, as well as strangers at gas stations. i took it again to firestone and demanded replacement. i was told that there was no mileage warranty, and because they were so worn out (steel belts visible) on the perimeter (but not the middle tread area) there was no wear credit. i was told that all i could do was purchase new tires at my cost. not wanting to put my family's life in jeopardy, in early 1999, i replaced all four tires at my cost ($367.29) with michelins. since then, not only is the car running smoothly above 60mph, with 20,000 miles on them, they still have plenty of tread for another 20-30,000 miles. when the recall was announced in august 2000, i rejoiced because i knew something was inherently wrong with the tires, and because i thought (mistakingly) i would be reimbursed. but...because i had replaced my tires before the official recall, i am not eligible for reimbursement. ironically, when i went to the ford dealer recently for a different recall, he noticed that i still had a wilderness atx as a spare, so i am in the process of changing that one. it is highly unethical and insulting to be reimbursed for a never-used spare and not for the other four, (dot number: vdhl 1pm 4 tiresize: p235/75r15)

Incident occurred in february, 2000, prior to information in the press about tire failure. my son and his girlfriend stopped at a traffic light and when they accelerated the car was difficult to handle and made a loud noise. they were able to get the car to the shoulder and called for help. they reported that the tire was shredded and that all that was left were a few pieces. there was a driving rain storm at the time, and they had difficulty getting help that night. we did not link this problem with tire failure until we started to hear about the problem on the news. we were grateful that the blowout happened while the car was at a stop, and not while our son was driving . he had been on a road with a steep incline, and had turned on to a road that paralleled the ocean. *ak( dot number: )

While returning from christmas vacation on i-70 we suffered a blowout on the passenger side rear tire of our 1996 ford explorer sport. we had just passed a tractor-trailor and i was in the inside lane. the this caused me to swerve immediately into the outside lane in front of the semi and then onto the sholder of the road. i was able to control the vehicle and stop partially off the road in the snow. i later took the tire to my mechanic and he examined it and stated the tread had seperated to the best of his knowledge. i contacted ford and they stated it was a goodyear problem. i contacted goodyear and they stated it was a ford explorer problem. neither i, my wife who is 4 months pregnant, nor my 21 month old child were injured but had i been in the outside lane i would not have been able to control the vehicle when it went into the ditch and this could possibly have been a very serious accident. i ahd just had the frod explorer recall for the sway bay links and a tire inspection completed by the ford dealer before we left on our trip (900 miles before the tire failure) and i was given no advice about needing new tires or if the sway bar links had caused any damage to the tires. i had my tires rotated at 35281 miles. i believe there is possibly a problem with my goodyear tires of the explorer is the source of the problems.  In june of 1996, 1 new tire blew out, and i was lucky to get a replacement and goodyear reinbursed me for the cost of a new tire. eventually, my tires started wearing oddly, and after getting a whole new set, my sway bar link broke. i had the sway bar replaced, but my new tires are also wearing very oddly. i have had several front end alignments, tire balance and frequent rotations. no one is sure why my tires are wearing as they are, on the inside only. the tread is very thin, and i think i will need a third set of tires on this truck. i wonder if the sway bar is part of the problem. it seems like everything big and expensive went out on this car as soon as it hit just over 100k miles. of course my transimission, and catalytic converter problems were not covered under warranty, even though both were very close. i plan to take the car to ford to discuss the tire problem, i hope someone can explain why i am going through so many sets of tire. i have never had an accident in this vehicle, and have maintined it carefully. could the sway bar be a problem? *ak( dot number: tire size: lt23s/75r1 )

Noticed hairline crack circling tire at bottom of tread. i contacted firestone, initially i was offered 1 replacement tire of the same type as the failed tire if an inspection of the problem tire verified my concern regarding the beginning of tread separation problem. i informed the firestone hotline and dealer rep that this was unacceptable, i wanted all tires replaced even though these were not under recall. i informed them that it was ludicrous to be put in a situation where i would be forced to continue checking all tires every three days. i would not be put in that situation. being persistant, i was advised to contact dist mgr. no toll free #, at my own expense (phone) i contacted dist mgr. he approved all replacement, when confirmed. confirmed by company owned tire store 11/13/00. all five replaced 11/14/00 with bridgestone dueler at. i am satisfied at this time. i simply wanted to report failure of tire made in wilson, nc. after being pushed, bridgestone/firestone did the right thing, although they had to be pushed, after the first line of contact tried to minimize and deflect. i praise firestone for eventually doing the right thing. *ak (dot number: w2hlipyl08 tiresize: p235/75r15)

The left rear tire separated at 70mph, the tire stayed inflated and was able to pull to the side of the road. the tread wrapped around the emergency brake line (cutting it) and flapped against the tailgate of the explorer. i took the explorer to my ford dealer, i asked them if this was a recall item at which time they told me the tires seperate like that. i then replace the brake line and bought new wilderness tires from the ford dealer. i have still not fixed the damage to the explorer other than the brake line.*ak( dot number: )

The firestone tire blew, the tread completely pealed off. this caused the vehicle to go out of control and flip over. it slid down the highway up side down for a few hundred feet before it slammed into a guardrail and stopped. the driver suffered abrasions from the deployment of the airbag. the passenger was banged around some and went unconscious at one point. he was taken to the nearest hospital, examined and treated. he spent several months going thru rehabilitation for neck pain but it has never gone completely away. the vehicle was a total loss.( dot number: )

I purchased my 96 ford explorer in nov. 95 and have had a vehicle shudder problem that becomes a safety problem when tires are inflated beyond the recommended tire pressure of 26psi. ford have now recommended tire pressures of 30psi, which i cannot do without risking a vehicle loss of control situation.the first time tis happened, it absolutely scared the living daylights out of me, to put it politely! i had just picked up the truck from the mission valley ford after some brake work. i took the truck up to freeway speed and while traveling over some rough freeway surface the truck almost went out of control. i returned to the dealer where failure analysis was performed. the only issue the service engineer identified as abnormal was they had set the tire pressure to 30psi(all tires). resetting the tires back to 26psi eliminated the problem.this problem resurfaced twice more since and resetting the tires to 26psi corrected the lack of control problem. the shudder i normally feel appeared to extend into the steering wheel and it became very difficult for me to control the truck when i traveled over a rough patch in the surface of a freeway. emergency braking brought the truck back under control. i no longer allow my wife to drive the explorer.im familiar with steering wheel shudder as a result of poor wheeling balancing, but this is different. the whole vehicle shudders, not the steering wheel, at cruising speeds of 60 mph and above, and is particularly obvious on long journeys. this was identified to your service dept., who suggested that the tracking and/or the tires may be at fault. tracking has been checked and new tires purchased, but neither corrected the problemt shudder problem has been verified by the service dept of the dealer where i purchased my explorer. see attached service records dated 6/12/97 and 12/1/98 for this problem.please review the above information and attached service records. i eagerly await your response.

One tire was constantly low from time of purchase. complained to 2 ford dealerships and tire company but no one could find a problem with tire. i put air in the tire weekly for 3 years and had tires rotated every 3.000 miles. tires were in good condition except for slow leak in the one in question. tire pressure was kept at approx. 30lbs or higher never below. while driving on i-80 over sierra from reno to sacramento the car began to shake.vibrate.intensely so lowered speed fom 60mph to 40mph for 2 hours until finding surbuban ford in sac. the service manager drove the car and said it was too dangerous to continue driving but he could not find the problem. finally on the lift he said there was problem with tire so he changed it. next day at firestone service center i was told by manage that the tire separated. he replaced the tire with same make and charged me 37.00. in january 2000 another tire separated and i again bought a new tire for 67.00. it also separated. i'm advising of this info to help others regarding the issue of tire inflation. firestone continues to blame the consumer but we inflated our tires to at least 30. there is an obvious defect in the tires. all this info is documented should someone require it regarding a serious injury. i was very very lucky so i hope this helps someone who was not as fortunate .( dot number: tire size: 23575r15 )

My ford explorer limited awd v-8 started to shake and bounce while i was driving near my house in mililani hawaii. i immediately drove it to the nearest tire dealer, goodyear auto service center in mililani hawaii and spoke with the general manager. he inspected my vehicle tires and determined that i had experienced premature tread belt separation and advised that i not operate the vehicle until all affected tires were replaced. he stated that operation of my vehicle w/o replacing the affected tires would result in total tire failure which could expose the driver and passenger(s) to harm, injury or death. as such, i complied with his recommendation that the affected tires be replaced. this took place approximately two months before firestone recalled all firestone radial atx tires two weeks ago. i would like to note that firestone did in fact send me a recall notice (unsolicited) but that the recall date is between jan. 01, 2000 and august 9, 2000. although not required by law, i feel that they should expand their recall to include any customer that can show documented proof that they had replaced their firestone radial atx p235/75r15 tires due to tread belt separation. thank you, wallace choy( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

I complained to ford when center console area vibrated significantly anywhere from 65 miles per hour to 75 miles per hour. it was at its worst at about 72-73 miles per hour. i was unable to use the cd player installed (by ford) in the compartment between the driver and passenger seats. ford blamed the problem on the tires and had me go to a tire shop to have them replaced. this happened in 1997! the tire shop (don olson tires) claimed there was a suspension problem with the ford explorers and it would happen again. they replaced the tires with new firestone radial atxs. we realigned the vehicle and the problem seemed to go away. after about six months, the problem came back (not as severe). i continued to have the vehicle realigned about every 4 months. unfortunately, as the tires got older, the problem got worse. i continued the balancing of the tires and realignment process often. august 15, 2000 while driving with my family, we had a tread separation of the radial atx tires. they had about 35000-40000 miles on them. they were replaced by the firestone firehawk tires (not the recall ones). i had the vehicle realigned again. i still have a problem with the center console area shaking. it seems to be worse at about the same 72-73 miles per hour. ford has never claimed any responsibility. i haven't asked them for their opinion since the first time i approached them (in 1997), they blamed the tires. it appears to me as if it is a ford explorer problem as much as a firestone tire problem. please research this if possible and have ford reevaluate their position on this issue. please advise me if you need any more information as i will be happy to discuss it with you. my office phone number is 305-526-1215. thank you for listening. brian fields( dot number: tire size: 235/75/15 )

I was traveling approximately 60 mph when the left rear tire blew out. i did not lose control of the vehicle , hence no damage to the vehicle. these tires were installed at 74960 miles on the vehicle. the tire was taken to the firstone store in madison, wi and i was told that the tire would not be replaced because the blowout was due to 'road hazard' and not covered by warranty. i bought a new tire and then contacted firestone directly and explained that i thought that this failed tire had a manufacturing defect; firestone then sent me a check covering the cost of the new tire. the blowout point was where the tread was vulcanized to the sidewall. also starting in may, 2000 (80702 miles) i had trouble keeping these tires balanced; after the tires warmed up there was a severe vibration starting at approxiametly 55 mph. the tires were balanced three times over a period of about six weeks. i had the tires inspected by firestone and just one of the tires had the 'dot vd' marking. i was told by the firestone rep that they recommended replacing all of the tires, firestone would replace the one tire and i would be responsible for the other three. firestone did not have any replacement tires in stock and couldn't give me a target date. they also said that they thought the vibrations were due to the vehicle and not the tires so it was a ford problem. i have since, at my cost, replaced the firestones with michelins; the new tires cured the vibrations. i have my tires inflated at 32 to 35 psi at all times.( dot number: unknown tire size: p235 75r15 )

As reported on 9/5/00 (before the tire recall hearings on 9/6/00) to senators richard shelby and frank lautenberg and house representatves w.j. billy tauzin and fred upton: i recently read in the times that the explorer tire that blows out most often is the rear driver side tire, which makes me wonder if there is a design defect in the vehicle. upon closely examining my 96 explorer (which didn't come with firestone tires, by the way), i found that the body leans to the left (driver's side), resulting in a vertical sag of about half an inch on that side. i confirmed that the sag is not related to vehicle loading - the sag persists with both vehicle and gas tank empty; or to weakened springs - the chasis stays level, only the body sags. also, the vehicle has not been in any accidents that could have caused this. since then, over the last couple of weeks or so, i have been closely observing explorers and other suv's on the road and in parking lots. the results of my admittedly not-so-scientific survey are as follows: (1) about 50% of the older explorers on the road show a similar sag to the left. (2) none of the explorer's observed showed a sag to the right.  Traveling on interstate at 70 mph. left front tire came apart. able to control vehicle to the side of the road. upon inspection of the remains, which included the tread but no side wall, it was apparent that there was no cut, puncture or other external damage that would be cause for the blowout. i took the remains to the firestone store from which i purchased the tires and the manager agreed with me that the tire had failed at the sidewall , and involved an apparent high temperature. the tire was replaced with a new tire. that tire along with the others are showing, in my opinion, a strange pattern of wear on the sidewalls and near the bead. these tires were purchased brand new in nov. 1999. these tires are not the size tires that are involved in recall as of 8-14-00, but i believe them to be faulty. they should also be recalled in the interest of safety. thank you. *ak( dot number: 000 tire size: p255/70r16 )

On a very warm day in may, i had a tire blow out. i thought it was a unique problem, however with all the firestone investigation and reports about defective tires, i believe that my tire was defective. after contacting both ford and firestone dealers with my concern, i have been told that even though the nhtsa has issued warnings against my tires, they are under no obligation to replace my tires. according to press statements made by jason vines from ford and christine karbowiak from firestone, if a customer has a concern about their tires, they will be replaced at no cost. obviously, the ford and firestone dealers are not honoring these comments and have been informed not to replace the tires until they have been recalled. i am extremely concerned with my tires and would appreciate any help and suggestions you have regarding my concern. please contact me and inform me of how i should proceed.( dot number: w2uu tire size: 235/70/15 )

(3) less than 5% of the other suv's observed showed any sag, which was equally likely to be to the left or to the right. i thought i should pass on this information to you, for whatever it is worth, before the tire recall hearings in the senate tomorrow. sincerely, ramesh dhingra. *ak

Since i purchased my vehicle used, it was time to replace the original tires. i went to the dealer in may, 2000 and they recommended firestone wilderness at's which i purchased, and had the dealer mount and balance the tires. with all the negative publicity and poor safety record of these tires, i am really upset knowing that i am driving on tires that may not be safe. even though i had the tires checked by the dealer and they are not the dot vdhl models, i am scared to be driving on them. i drive approximately 60 highway miles to work each day - at highway speeds of 65 mph. during rush hours - which leaves me even more apprehensive about the safety of this product. i suggest that nhtsa mandate a total recall of all these tires, not just the ones manufactured at the decatur, il plant. my safety and the safety of my family is at stake. if one plant's quality control was nonexistant, who's to say another plant's lack of integrity isn't as great? please help me and the millions of others who have purchased tires for their vehicles unknowing of the hidden defects that may be facing them.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

The tire in question shed a large lump of tread while driving at speed on the interstate over memorial weekend 1999. the ford explorer was carrying two children (one year and seven years old) and the two month pregnant driver (aged 32). a loud 'thump' was heard from the rear, followed by a scraping sound (presumably as the tread caught around the wheel arch). the tire shows signs of the shed tread having rubbed against the rest of the tire as it continued to revolve with the tread caught in the wheel arch. the following week firestone was contacted and expressed no concern whatsoever, saying that the tire had probably hit something in the road or been previously curbed, causing the tread shed. the tire, and others on the vehicle, were replaced (with the latest version of the same tire type), at the driver's expense. i was most concerned when i now learn of a recall on all such tires and contacted firestone on the freephone number. i was not satisfied with the 'standard' replacement answer, as i still had this tire in my possession. i was given various other number to call within the company, but received nothing more than the standard take it to the dealer for replacement answer. i feel that firestone should at very least have volunteered to recover the tire and analyze this example for their records. i therefore contacted nhtsa for their advice and have been sent a label for return of the tire. this tire did not actually burst in this incident, but from the condition it was in on removal, was very close to that point. had firestone treated this case seriously at the time, deaths and serious injuries could have been avoided.( dot number: vdhl1pm126 tire size: p235/75r15 )

Traveling on interstate at 70 mph and heard a knocking noise. pulled over to the side of the interstate. the left rear tire had peeled completely off. replaced the tire with spare. went to firestone dealer and was told that all four tires might should be replaced since one was bad. i replaced all 4 tires with the atx. submitted claim to firestone for damage to car and tire not knowing at the time, there was a problem. i thought it was short of a miracle that firestone actually paid for the tire and damage. now, i know why. my husband has the wilderness at tires and we are proceeding to get his tires checked out. there is a waiting list in sc (being that we are the last state for the recall) for tires to be replaced. i am on a list but i am not happy that i have to wait, knowing what it is really like and what could have happened.( dot number: tire size: 235/75r15 )

I went out to the truck and the left front tire had a rubber flap... i drove it home carefully and put the spare on it. about 5 days later, on the way home from work, i heard flapping again.. this time, it was the right rear tire. since i was selling the truck, i stopped at gateway tire on bert kouns, shreveport, la to have one-offs put all the way around. i'm not looking to get anything out of this as i've sold the truck, i just want it noted for reference. thank you.( dot number: )

We took our car in for an oil change and rotation and balancing of tires. we were told we had 4 good tires. when we left the store, i felt bumping in the tires. we got on the thruway and drove about 30 miles. when we returned, we saw the rubber had peeled off one of the tires and the core was showing. my husband took the car back to firestone. they disclaimed any repsonsibility for the tire peeling and had no clue why it would have happened. they tried to sell my husband a brand new tire with no pro-rating or anything. jerry was angry and told them to put the spare on. in subsequent conversations with them, they repeatedly denied that their work had anything to do with it, even though they admitted the tech was new and had lumped all the tires together during rotation. we were furious and vowed not to return. a few days later, i mentioned it to the dealer we bought the car from and he got us a new tire in lieu of a $100 sales commission for bringing in another buyer. took it to firestone, they asked where we had got the tire and charged us to mount it. i called them on the phone and asked for an address for the firestone co. and he then reimbursed us the money he had charged to mount it. we're even more angry now because they acted as though they had never heard of such a thing and, yet, they apparently knew about this. we like to travel and are now afraid to go anywhere.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

With all the recent reports of the firestone tires i thought it was important to report my incident to see the full scope of the problem.my wife had just exited the freeway going about 50 m.p.h. when her tire blew out. she came close to losing control of the vehicle.i remember it as being a very warm, dry afternoon because i changed the tire and i was pouring sweat. my wife did not hit anything and the tire was not punctured, it just blew out and came apart. the shop that changed the tire said they saw no puncture the tire just blew apart. this happened over a year ago, i just thought i would report it since it was similiar to the other reports of tire problems.thank you.( dot number: e4026556 ? tire size: 235/75 r15 )

On 1 may 1998, my daughter was driving my explorer when a tire blew. the tread peeled away from the tire. she was traveling about 65-70 mph (speed limit was 70). this happened in the afternoon on an overpass. she kept her cool and was able to control the vehicle. she was shaken up . a passerby stopped and changed the tire. i couldn't belive the looks of the tire. i had to go buy new ones (2ea) on 2 may 1998. i went to goodyear. on 11 may1998 i went and replaced the back two firestones. my spare tire is a tire is a firestone that was taken off of the car when tires were replaced. i was unaware that you could contact anyone of this issue, until at this time. i have contacted ford and firestone of this mishap and ford wrote me back was glad my daughter wasn't hurt and to contact firestone. i contacted firestone and they told me to go to any firestone and pick up an app;ication for reimbursement. but what i am hearing and read they will only honor from 1 jan 2000-16 aug 2000. that is utterly ridiculous. those tires that were on myvehicle were originals like all the others on the road. like i said i didn't know a complaint could be lodged for tires that were two years old. i am a widow on a fixed income and it was hard to come up with means to replace 4 new tires. i believ e i should be compensated some. i also have my original receipts from the new tires. i thankyou for hearing me out. sincerely, donna l. miller.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

On 2 seperate occassions, an original rear firestone atx tires' tread peeled off resulting in 2 seperate accidents. both of the incidents happened while the auto was being driven at a high rate of speed during hot days in southern california. during the first incident, 5 people were riding in the vehicle which almost rolled. thankfully, traffic on the fwy was extremely light and we were able to avoid a collision and get the vehicle to the side of the road. all 5 passengers endured extreme mental anguish that prevented them from continuing their travel. we contacted firestone who would not admit any defect with the tire, but did pay for the damage to the vehicle. however, we were very suspicous of the tires at that time since it seemed so unlikely that a tire would do that. so we asked to have all tires replaced. firestone rejected our request. approximately 6 months later the other rear tires' tread peeled off under the same conditions. again, no one was seriously injured. firestone however refused to replace that tire as well as any of the other tires. now that the news of this product defect is arising everything is starting to make sense. we feel both angry and betrayed by firestone that they had this information available, refused to fix the problem when it was so apparent on our vehicle, and knowingly put my entire family's lives in jeapordy. we intend to file suit against firestone.( dot number: tire size: 16 )

On july 8, 2000 at 12 noon, the firestone tire ( front passenger side) on my 1996 ford explorer seperated while traveling at 70 mph. the force of the seperation pulled me out of the left lane into the right lane. luckily the lane was clear and i was able to control my vehicle and pull to the shoulder. the condition of the roads were clear. the weather was sunny and hot. the incident occured on hwy 6 near navasota, tx. although there were no injuries, there was approx. $1200.00 damage to my car. i immediately filed a claim with firestone for the damage to my car. i shipped the tire to firestone for analysis, and they have agreed to cover the damages to my car. i still have 2 remaining firestone tires on my vhecile and intend to participate in the recall recently issued by ford/firestone.( dot number: vdhl1pm455 tire size: p235 75r15 )

The tread of the passenger-side front tire came detached from the tire while i was driving south on i-5 in san diego. my car nearly flipped over and some damage was done to my front quarter on the passenger side. i did not know there had been numerous complaints about these tires doing the same thing to other people, so i replaced the tires myself at a cost of $546 out of fear for safety with those tires. i'm concerned that firestone will try to ignore people who have already purchased new tires on their own, even though it was firestone's defective tires that needed to be replaced. please help us make sure that firestone owns up to their mistake and compensates people like myself who could have been killed as a result of their defective product.( dot number: )

Traveling off sanibel island and accelerating to 50 mph, i heard a loud thud and slapping at the rear of the car as if i had run over something. i pulled to the side and discovered that the rear passenger side tire had shreaded. the tire was still inflated but the tread had separated, tearing off the rear wheel guard and the driver's side running board. the driver's rear side was also dented. since i had just accelerated to 50, i did not lose control of the car and no other vehicles were hit by the flying debris. we changed the tire and drove to the nearest firestone dealer to replace that tire and the other rear tire. they did not inform us of existing problems with the atx and sold us two new atx tires. after we arrived at our destination -- which was a family reunion out of town -- we discovered the problems with accidents related to firestone tire tread separation which had resulted in accidents and even fatalities. upon return home we went to the firestone store and they took the two atx tires back and replaced them with bridgestones. the body damage estimate is $1,100. we still have two front atx tires and a spare and are waiting to see if a recall is put in place for those.( dot number: )

I have had 4 incidents with these tires. all occurred on the florida turnpike at speeds over 55 mph. one occurred on august 23, 1999, coming home from my parents home in west palm beach. the threads separated. i noticed a strange noise and upon arriving at home a piece of the tire was loose and i had been travelling on the inside part. bought a new tire, same brand. two more occurred as my son was driving from miami to tallahassee to return to school. funny, i told him to take my car because i had good tires. he had two blow outs, both rear wheels and hit the guard rail. replaced these two in tlh at a sears store, with of course, the same brand and type. the first one was right after i purchased the vehicle, and i don't remember the incident. thats an awful coincidence. took my vehicle to local firestone dealer, and was not treated very kindly. i mostly drive my vehicle on the expressways and turnpike, since i have to travel between mia and fll at least once a week.( dot number: tire size: 25570s16 )

I bought the car used. i took the car to my mechanic to look over and recommend what work needed to be done in order for me to purchase the vehicle. i still have the original list. among the things that i said needed to be repaired/replaced were the tires. the dealer refused. we bought the vehicle and i began driving it. it is my first suv and i was uncomfortable with the way it handled on bumps in the road, over railroad tracks, in dips in the road, etc. several times when i took the vehicle in for regularly scheduled maintenance, i complained about the way it handled. because the dealer could not duplicate the problem, they said everything was ok. they also suggested that because it is an suv i should get used to the rougher ride. the problem however was in the way i felt i lost control of the vehicle under these conditions, not that the ride was rough. i continued to complained about the way it handled on subsequent visits. i even began asking them to look at the tires. i became concerned about the tires as i saw dry rot on the outer edges of each of the tires. again, i believe everytime i took it in i asked them to examine the tires and let me know if i should be concerned. they would note the tire tread on my paperwork but no one every counseled me. i took the vehicle to a service station near my home to see what they thought. i was told to replace the tires as soon as possible and to try not to drive for many miles at a time and especially during hot days. i replaced the tires within the week. i am concerned now about the firestone recall and that va is in phase three. i replaced my old firestone tires with michelins and do not wish to have a firestone product on any of our cars. how can i get the spare tire replaced and how can i get a credit for the old tires to apply toward the tires i replaced?( dot number: tire size: 255/70r/16 )

On 9-12-99, at approximately 4:30pm, my wife was driving her explorer at approximately 70 mph on the beltway 8 in houston. the left rear tire shredded and had a blow out. she then lost control of the auto. the auto turned right and traveled toward the right hand concrete barrier. she frantically turned the steering wheel, and just before hitting the barrier, she was able to turn the car to the left. the car then did 360's careening across all the lanes of the toll way. the car stopped parallel to the left concrete barrier, approx. 12 from the barrier. a harris co. constable stopped and had the car towed, due to the damage to the left rear of the car. we advised machaik ford that they should pay for replacing the tire, due to ongoing problems with the tires. service manager mary stated we are not aware of any problems with the tires. she was told the matter would be referred to my attorney. at that point, i asked that the tire be put inside my car and my spare put on. when i picked up the car, no one at mak haik had any idea where my tire was. nobody knew what had happened to it. i feel they intentionally hid evidence on my tire problem, after i advised them an attorney would be involved.( dot number: )

 (1) my original/never used spare tire & rim on my 1996 ford explorer 2 door 4wd sport is the incorrect one for the vehicle from the ford motor company factory. vehicle was ordered with 16 inch tires/rims from ford motor co, and 15 inch tire & rim was present on the spare. (2)repair shop notified me of wrong tire size issue when i had the other tires changed on the vehicle. consequences are a safety risk to myself and passengers if i have flat tire and need to use the spare tire. also, have been told that wrong size spare will burn up my transmission in the vehicle. ford motor company was contacted and asked to replace the rim & tire, and they refused and said dealership (southgate ford) was responsible. voice mail left to manager at southgate ford on this issue was not returned by them. (3) i need a 16 inch tire & 16 inch rim from ford motor co in order for the correct this issue and to avoid a safety risk to myself and passengers. *tr

I own a 1996 ford explorer. on may 9, 2006, i took it to a ford dealer for a safety inspection (the multi-point inspection report card as recommended by ford motor company) all four tire were marked on the tread depth scale in the green 7/32 or greater box. later that same evening after school let out i proceeded on a trip. i left tucson, az around 5:30 to 6:00pm got no farther than yuma az when the tread from my right rear tire completely separated from the steel belt underneath tearing the rear right bumper off, the bumper area underneath the door was hanging on the ground and big black circular marks were on the back passenger door where the tread had hit during separation. the event itself was horribly frightening for us as well as my 3 children. thank the lord we did not wreck and there was no turnover of the vehicle. we were able to change the tire with a spare but the damage was already done to the vehicle. the tire was a firestone wilderness ht p225/70r15. i went back to the ford dealer who had safety checked the tire and he said it was a defect in manufacturing and had no way of knowing when these things would happen. the dot code on the tire is w2uu ipo .99. i contacted firestone who said the last 2 numbers would be the date the tire was manufactured. my questions are is this a common thing for these types of tires and what is the life span of that tire. shouldn't i have been made aware that the tire was 7 yrs old or does it matter how old the tire is. i bought new tires (certainly not firestones) but i feel like i should have been made aware of the age of my tire if its simply checking a manufacturing date. that way i could have chosen to not put my families life in jeopardy!! *nm

Driving home from school on interstate 20 my car started to shake. i reduced the speed of my vehicle from about 68 mph to 60 mph. then i heard a loud pop and my car started to fishtail across three lanes of traffic, missing a tractor trailer by about one foot. i finally handled the truck and pulled onto the side of the interstate. i proceeded to get out of my vehicle to try to control my nerves and try to figure out what happened. i walked over to the rear passenger side of my vehicle and the entire tread of my tire was gone. it was strewn about. the tire other than the tread was in perfect condition. it was the full size spare on the car when i bought it and it had only been driven on for aprox. 6 months with no problems. i proceeded to look at the side of my vehicle and my sidestep was missing, and my car was dented up. it looks terrible. the scratches start at the rear passenger door and went all the way to the back of the vehicle. i do not have the money to fix my car. the incident was not my fault. my car is well taken care of. i have to take care of it because i have three children. this is my only mode of transportation. the firestone that was on my car is model, p235/75 r15 atx. it has the beginning dot letters vd from decatur, illinois. i have a 1996 ford explorer.

I had my tires inspected at two reputible tire dealerships and both have indicated that all four tires have evidence of tread separation and have recommended immediate replacement and highly suggested not to operate the vehicle at highway speeds. all of the tires have cracks at the treadline, some wide enough to place a penny into. i have letters from both tire dealerships outlining this problem as well as photos of the cracks. i understand that this particular tire has already been recalled in venezuala, however has not been added to firestone's current us recall list. i contacted firestone consumer affairs div. about this concern and received no assistance. in turn they referred me to my local ford dealer who basically told me there was nothing they could do since this tire wasn't on the recall list. these tires are in bad shape and need to be replaced. knowing that this size tire is experiencing the same problem and not included with firestone's recall concerns me greatly. thank you for your attention with this safety issue.( dot number: w2cu1px505 tire size: p255 70r16 )

I originally had the atx's on my explorer. once the recall went into effect, i went to a firestone car care center in nashville (store # 028150) and they replaced them with the bridgestone duelers. i drove to work afterwards going down the interstate when i noticed a shaking in the vehicle. i had just had a balance and front end alignment to go along with the replacements. so the next day, i took it back and explained the problem to the manager. it was busy and at the end of the day so i said i would bring it in the first thing saturday morning. they placed my tires on the balancing machine and i watched as we all noticed a wobbling in all the tires. the manager explained to me that the cause of this had something to do with when they manufacture the tires, they have a light and heavy spot in them. if that heavy spot is off or extremely heavy, it can cause a wobble. nevertheless, i asked what am i to do now. the manager stated that i would now be placed on the replacement list. i would prefer to go to a ford dealership now, but since i already had a replacement done, i doubt if they will replace them again. this is where i need your help. i have all the documentation stating the defective replacement tires. can you send me a letter authorizing a dealership to replace them again? or can you help me out in any way or suggest what altenatives i have? also, i can't understand why i had to repurchase the lifetime warranties on the balance and road hazzard when i had them originally on the atx's. the atx's were a recall, not tires that wore down from normal usage where a warranty would expire. i know the bridgestone duelers were not included with the recall, but they were my replacement tires, and they too were imperfect and acknowledged by the firestone car care center. as a consumer, i have done what was directed by your administration. as a consumer and a state government employee, i have gained nothing by doing what i was directed to do. help me!

My family & i were driving to ca. from las vegas down i-15, about 25 miles out of las vegas. the tread completely blew off our right, rear tire, driving about 70 mph. my husband fought to keep control of the car, it swayed & rocked violently. we had heard a loud bang but didn't know what it was & didn't suspect a flat tire, thought something had hit us.the road was clear at the time; had usual traffic been present we would've hit anthing in the lane next to us, due to severe swerving. had we turned over and rolled, most definitely wouldn've been severely injured if not killed. pulled over, saw that tread was completely gone. rear light was broken, quarter panel dented, rear bumper disengaged from car. after getting tire changed by aaa club, immediately return to lv. at goodyear shop, told them to take off all tires & bought new ones for total of $500. the previous week had had car serviced for trip to calif. & no problems noted with tires (had specific conversation). no clue that this would happen. am currently worried about goodyear steel belted tires that have been on since 7/99 since i live in desert & it's frequently over 100 degrees. i have them checked frequently too but now i have no peace of mind after harrowing experience of last summer.( dot number: ??? tire size: p235/75r15 )

In the month of january i was on a return trip from orlando, florida and on my way to tallahassee, florida home. approximately 60 miles north of orlando i began to experience a vibration in the vehicle that i was driving ( 1996 ford explorer ). i was traveling at 60 mph and as i continued to decrease in speed the vibration increased and before i was able to bring the vehicle to a stop i felt a large bang in the left rear of the vehicle as if the tire blew, the vehicle began to swerve back and forth to the left and to the right, i was able to get the vehicle under control nearly missing another vehicle. i replaced the tire with the spare that was on the vehicle and made it to tallahassee. during the duration of the drive to tallahassee i observed the performance of the remaining tire on the vehicle. my conclusion when i arrived in tallahassee was that i did not feel that the tires on the vehicle were safe and would not bet my families life them so i had them replaced. within the next week i had four of the five tires replaced on the vehicle, the spare still remains under the vehicle until such time this matter is resolved. to my surprise on august 8, 2000 i heard rumors that the tire of the same brand and make firestone radial atx series may be recalled. however there was substantial damage to the vehicle from the steel belted radial that tore away from the wheel itself causing damage to the vehicle and almost my life from the tire in question. i feel that it would not be unreasonable to be reimbursed for the tires that i replaced and the damage to my vehicle. i would appreciate a reply to the matter at hand. *ak( dot number: tire size: p235r15 )

Follow a long weekend trip, i noticed a large section of the outside tread was missing from the rear passenger side tire revealing the steel belt. it is was the original equipment tire, the firestone atx, that came with the explorer which we purchase new in '96. the missing piece was at least five inches in length and two inches wide. i immediately replaced the damaged tire with the matching spare. in early june i replace the entire set of firestone tires with another brand. at that time i was told by a discount tire employee the damage was probably caused by hitting a large pothole (which i didn't believe.) please add our complaint to your file surrounding the firestone tires. we have a two-year old son who we drove around exclusively in the explorer. thank god nothing happen, but i will always remember the delay ford and firestone displayed with this recall.( dot number: tire size: 235 )

Engineers report by certified professionals determined that the tire was manufactured defectively in that the tread was not properly bonded to the belts, which allowed the tread to become separated from the belts, altering the structural integrity of the tire. this separation caused the vehicle to flip five times, totaling the vehicle and injuring the driver. the accident occurred in texas, in hot weather and on a highway. the faulty tire was only 5 months old. *ak( dot number: vdhl1pm126 tire size: p235/75r15 )

We were driving back from mammoth through the mojave desert on weekend of june 22, 2000. we stopped for lunch in bishop california and when we returned to our car we had a flat tire. we called aaa and the tow truck driver took us to the only station in town that was open of a sunday afternoon. when they looked at the tire they noticed that instead of a puncture in the tire that caused the flat a top layer of the tire had peeled away and wires were exposed. i guess this is the deglazing effect that is occuring with the firestone atx radials. the station did not have the atx tires we originally had so we replaced the flat with the wilderness tires. we had to replace both tires so they would match. the temperature that day that we were traveling was approximately 100 degrees. *ak( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

Both tire defects appear as large bubbles in the tread of the tire. the first tire defect became apparent the first time that tire was mounted after having been used as the spare tire all of it's life, never having been mounted untill then. the bubble became apparent to me as a vibration and road slap noise. the most recent defect (different tire) appears as a bubble approximately 12 in length, approximately 3 wide along the inside tread surface. *ak( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

All 4 of our firestone tires were quite new, and the tread was excellent. for no reason, the right rear tire exploded while we were driving on the freeway. all that remained of the tire were rudiments of the tread. the entire sidewall had blown off. the firestone dealer initially claimed that we must have run over something, but then changed his mind and replaced the tire. now that we are reading about the problems with this tire, we believe that there is a real need to pull all of them off the market before more accidents occur. it is not enough for firestone to voluntarily inspect the tires because the tires look fine. it is a structural problem that is not apparent to the naked eye, and that makes it all the more dangerous. ford motor company recommends these tires, and firestone stands behind them. the tires pose a known risk, and it is time for these two companies to replace them. thanks for your consideration of this matter. ken lloyd. *ak( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

On oct 12, 1999, while driving at highway speed on a 2-lane state highway near mojave, ca on a hot, autumn day, my right rear tire lost tread/delaminated causing a total loss of control. i swerved several times trying to regain control, but was unsuccessful. the suv rolled completely to the right, landing upright facing the right shoulder of the road. fortunately, there was no oncoming or trailing traffic, so no other vehicles/persons were involved. i was wearing my seatbelt & was very fortunate to sustain only very minor injuries & was able to exit the suv w/ some assistance from people who stopped to help. as i complained of neck pain, i was ambulanced to the antelope valley hospital, but was released w/ only minor bruises, cuts & sore muscles. my insurance company (20th century) declared the vehicle a total loss (pictures available) and paid me $24,072.70, plus covered my ambulance & emergency room bills. prior to this accident i had always maintained my suv in excellent condition. tire pressure was routinely checked in conjunction w/ regular oil changes every 3000 miles. all tires had plenty of remaining tread & had been recently rotated & balanced. i contend that this accident was due to the defective design of the firestone at tires. i have since purchased a 2000 eddie bauer explorer w/ the insurance proceeds plus another approximate $11,000 out of my own pocket. additionally, i immediately traded in the standard firestone wilderness at tires for more trustworthy ( & more expensive) bf goodrich at tires. i will never use firestone tires on any of my cars again. if a class action suit should be filed against firestone for these numerous accidents involving their all terrain tires w/ ford explorers, i would like to be included in the suit. thank you for your investigation into these dangerous tires.*ak( dot number: tire size: p235 owl )

One spot on one tire wore through into the steel belt while the rest of the tire tread had no problems with quite a bit of tread left on them. it was only by chance that i noticed the worn spot and fortunately it was before going on a long trip. new tires, same type were purchased. more recently, i rotated the original spare onto the car and noticed a steering pull to one side and found it was not an alignment problem. it turned out the original spare also had one worn out spot down to the steel belt while the rest of the tire was fine. at the store i asked why it might happen in particular on two tires. they mentioned there probably was a defect in the tire and they were to save the tire so i could contact firestone. however, they saved the wrong tire so i don't have it. but hearing of the defects on the all terrain firestone tires prompted me to relay this experience of two original equipment firestone tires that had single spots worn down past the steel belts on otherwise 1/2 worn tires. *ak( dot number: )

My wife and i purchased a new ford explorer in 09/1996. since that time we have had to replace every original tire, including the spare, because of tread seperation. this did not occur all at once, but over the period of time since we purchased the vehicle. some of the tires were replaced at the ford dealership and some of the tires were replaced at firestone dealerships, regardless of where the tires were inspected, the cause given for the bad tires was consistently the beginning of tread seperation. unfortunately, we were not aware of the extent of the problem nationally, because had we known, we would not have replaced the original tires with the same model/make of tires. i do not readily have available the dates, the vehicle mileage of when the tires were replaced nor which tires were replaced (e.g. front right or rear left) at the time of replacement, but i will search for those records. i always carefully monitor any subtle changes in the performance of my vehicles, which is why i was able to detect early, the seperation of the tread from the tires. the symptom i detected was a noticably rougher ride beginning at a speed of 50 mph. contact me, should you need any other information.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

This is another case of firestone atx tread separation and fatal rollover of a ford exploer. i understand through our local cbs affiliate that this agency has opened a preliminary investigation of this defect. if nhtsa truly stands behind thier motto, people saving people then you must put consumer safety first by recalling these tires on these vehicles. by allowing ford and firestone to avoid an expensive recall, our government is standing by as people die. all this in the name of money. you must be well aware of the millions of dollars being paid to victem's families to keep this issue out of the courtroom. if your waiting for ford and firestone to recall these tires out of the goodness of their hearts and to save lives, keep waiting. our only hope is nhtsa. this agency has the ability to save lives. please do it. *ak( dot number: )
