1998 ford explorer vin#1fmzu32zb93247 registered to the state of nevada; original owner: ernst etienne...registered because of disability reasons to wife guadalupe bellini...we were involved in a car crash accident...resulting to a total loss at baker, california because of the vehicle cruise control recall which could cause the tire to be treaded...pushing the car to be out of control..while the brake fluid leaking...and the air bag safety failed to develop (open). i think ford motor company is the primary responsible of the mechanical failure of the workmanship and the car design. i got in touch with thir legal department: product recall & liability. the accident report# 2010-11-0064 ncic#9835. the injured driver guadalupe belini; passenger and the permanent disabled passenger were taken to barstow community hospital emergency room. i need your help in removing all 1998 ford explorer from the road; this car could cause major & fatal injuries to the public at large.

Tire - tread separation vehicle - ford explorer (1998) tires - firestone (purchased somewhere in the 2003-2005 timeframe). these tires were snow tires and are used only a few months out of each year, so there is low mileage on them. at approximately 1 pm, my daughter left a school function in burbank, wa, and turned onto highway 12. she accelerated; about 100 yards later, just as she reached the snake river bridge, the left rear tire lost its tread. she was going less than 50 mph. the car was uncontrollable, spun around, and smashed into the concrete barrier of the bridge. the car was severely damaged (totaled). no other cars were involved. *tr

We had two incidents of tire blow outs in 4 months the last one occurring on oct 12, 2008. the cause of both blow outs was the tire stem but we did not hear about the recall until i heard it on the news today. we have since bought new tires afraid that it would happen again but what can we do now? i feel like we should be compensated but how? the ford dealer we bought the tires from is out of business so we could not go there when we realized that it was a tire stem problem and without knowing there was a recall we had no option but to go somewhere else which was american tire. we went to american tire both times it happened for them to fix the tires and they did not mention a recall either. the tires were not old enough to be replaced but for our own safety we did that. i guess i know there is nothing you can do but just wanted to get some advise of what to do, if anything. thanks, patty p.s. no crash, no deaths, thank goodness *tr

I was traveling in my 1998 ford explorer with my son and fiance to bullhead, az. traveling east on hwy40. about 30 miles west of needles, ca i experienced a blown tire on my left rear wheel. these tires were a year old and later we discovered a nail in the tire. we safely merged to the side of the highway and was eventually able to put the spare tire on the left rear. this spare tire is a firestone wilderness at tire (p235/75 r 15). we traveled again for about 20 miles when the spare tread separated causing my suv to experience severe movement back and forth and almost tipping over; slapping the tread into the rear fender and hatch of the car. my fiance managed to get the car under somewhat control and get us over to the side of the road. we were traveling approx. 70 to 72 mph and because of the first blown tire we all were skidish and keeping both hands on the wheel, which i feel was the reason we did not roll over. i called aaa and got towed to needles, ca where we got a new tire on the spare which cost $175.00. we continued to travel up hwy95 to bullhead city, az, approx. 15 miles, where our house was. july 3 we went to superior tires and bought 4 new goodyear tires. i am left with a damaged rear fender and a damaged hatch do to the firestone tire tread separation. *tr

My tires have leaked air since the suv was purchased. i know this has something to do with thread seperation. i thought i had a leak and needed a plug several times but no plug was necessary. i have been to several service stations and all have told me the thread of all 4 tires is 40% worn out. there are only 23000 miles on this suv. they have also told me it is not safe to drive my vehical. i have been to firestone in revere ma and they want 145 dollars for tires. they told me that they are defective, but that nhtsa made a deal with firstone to allow them to only recall 15 inch tires. these tires have not been recalled. this is a travesty to the safety of americans and a disgrace to your organization. these tires should all be recalled and replaced with non firestone tires. people are going to die from this, why would you only make them recall 15 inch tires. please let me know what i can do to get firestone to replace my tires with another brand for no charge.*ak (tiresize: 16 inch)( dot number: tire size: 16 inch )

I had stopped to get gas and tire was fine. by the time i had gotten up to speed on interstate, i had only gone about 5 miles when the tire blew out. i went by the dealer a few days later, because the car was still under warranty. they told me they didn't warranty the tires i would have to have firestone pro rate it. i did not want any more firestone tires so i kept the spare on for a while then had dealer mount the spare on to the permanent rim on 7/8/99. at that time i asked them to look for a hole on the blown tire. they said it was shredded so bad they couldn't find any one hole it wouldn't hold air at all. these tires wore so bad that i purchased new bf goodrich on 6/29/00.*ak (dot number: w2hl tiresize: 235/75r/15)

In today's newspaper firestone says that one of the reasons that the wilderness at tire (decatur plant) failed is beacus of cracking on the shoulder. i had noted shoulder cracking on this vehicle when the decatur tires (and i had less than 50,000 miles on the tires) were recalled. but, took this not to be a problem since the canadian version of the tires were not recalled. when i contacted firestone by e-mail they refused to address the problem. it does not seem that these tires would be safe if they were cracking the same as the decatur tires but maybe they are. how do i address this? *ak (tiresize: p235/75r15)( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

I had noted that my tires were all four looking bad for no more miles than i had on the car. tires had been rotated each time the oil was changed (3000 miles), since purchasing new. on 08/09/00 went in for oil change and tire rotation and colony tire suggested that it would not be safe for me to be driving with tires as the left rear had three splits and had separated in one place. the others showed cracks. colony tire called firestone to see about consideration for the tires. at that time he was told of the upcoming recall but these were no a part of recall. since that time i have written the bridgestonefirestone co., ford motor co.called cella ford, also colony tire has sent the tires (4) back to firestone.all this to no avail as all they have on their mind is the recall. which doesn't pay for my having to buy four new tires or run the risk of a fatal accident driving in 90+ degree weather. *ak (tiresize: 225-70-15)( dot number: tire size: 225-70-15 )

May of 2000, i was entering the interstate and noticed that my vehicle was geting harder to steer. i merged from the fast line to the slow lane in order to pull off to the emergency lane. when i got out to check my front passenger tire had gone flat. no warning and it was fine not 5 minutes before that. i called a tow truck to fix it and he told me that it came completely off the rim. i went to the dealer to obtain 2 new front tires and paid over $200.00 for them. the vin started with vn and the 2 new ones start with w2. i then heard about the recall and just figured that god must have been with me on that day to make my tire go flat before i could pick up any real speed. i know that you are not having firestone recall any other wilderness at tire, however i think you should reconsider. i have taken these tires off my vehicle as i am not comfortable with them. i replaced them with goodyear. i think there is a bigger problem with the wilderness at tires than is being said. *ak (dot number: vn tiresize: 23575r15)

When the firestone tire recall was first announced, i checked the tires on my 1998 ford explorer. the dot numbers and size were not among those listed in the recall, the tires seemed to be in good condition so i wasn't overly concerned. i have always maintained my vehicles meticulously, including the tires.air pressure is checked weekly and kept at 30 psi as instructed in the owners manual, and rotated at every other oil change (6000 mi ).while washing the vehicle several weeks ago, i noticed a slight hairline crack on the sidewall about 3/4 of an inch down from the tread area. this crack did not go completely around the tire at this time and was evident on only two tires. i have kept a close eye on them ever since. this past weekend i noticed it on all four tires, nearly completely around on two of them. this crack looks like the early stages of tread separation, and has our family afraid to drive our explorer any further than around town at city speeds. i believe that all wilderness at tires should be included in the recall, especially if they have visible defects. thank you (tiresize: p255r70-16)( dot number: tire size: p255r70-16 )

I have three tires with cracks at the base of the tread. both i and my tire dealer believe that these tires exhibit the beginning of tread separation. furthermore, if left in service we are confident that they will fail. i have contacted ford by phone and firestone via email without satisfaction. both ford and firestone believe that the firestone wilderness at failures are limited to those tires marked dot vdl. unfortunately, they are both wrong. while i still have the defective tires in my posession, they have been taken out of service. please work with ford & firestone to expand the recall to include these tires. thank you in advance for your attention to this request.  All 4 tires began to show tread separation all the way around the tire on both the inside and the outside of the tires. the vehicle was taken to 2 different ford dealerships, including the one where i bought my explorer, and both recognized the break down of the tires but stated that it was a firestone problem as the tire id number was not on their recall list. ford sent me back out on the highway with bad tires. the vehicle was taken to firestone which would only prorate a replacement which was not adequate. thus i elected to replace the tires with michelins. i have photographed the tires and have kept the tires for future reference. it appears that the tires broke down due to the fact that ford used the low pressure of 26 psi. in the tires to prevent rollover. this low pressure caused all 4 tires to break down at the same time. it was fortunate that the break down was found before complete separation occured causing a fatal accident. the firestone dealer confirmed to me that the low pressure in the tires was the cause for the break down and thus was not firestone's problem. as reported on the news this am 10-9-00 goodyear tires on ford explorers also have had tread separation probably caused by the low pressure required by the ford motor co. to prevent rollover of the explorer. these tires have not been recalled by ford or firestone and it is obvious that there are defective tires still out on the road and something should be done about this situation immediately.  I think that you explore the steering on the ford explore. it is mich to quick for the adverage driver. this is the reason there is so many roolovers/wrecks when a tire fails. i was driving when the tire failed on my explorer. i have built and drove race cars for years, have been to nascar drivers school (twice), and i believe this helped me control my truck when the tire failed. the every day driver would have reacted when the tire failed, the quick steering would have over reacted and the driver can not catch up with the reaction, thus a wreck. ford should replace the steering boxes on all explorer,s with a slower steering box.*ak

All tires are original equipment and are developing cracks along the entire outside circumference of the sidewall of the tire where it meets the tread. these cracks have continued to enlarge and two separate tire dealers in my home area have observed the tires and stated that they are separating and should not be driven on. i have advised ford via a local dealer and via e-mail to the main headquarters and have had no satisfaction. these tires are kept at a 32 psi minimum and are even removed in the winter months. i would think that someone from firestone would want to view these before they completely seperate and they may hold a better clue as to the seperation problem that is taking place.  On 6/18/2000 our 1998 ford explorer with firestone blow-out or a tread problewilderness at tires went out of control after making a sharp steering maneuver to avoid another car. our vehicle subsequently rolled over (we were told) six times. we do not believe there was a tire m, but what we suspect happened is debeading of the tires. we have read your 130 page report from july 1999 entitled an experimental examination of selected maneuvers that may induce on-road untripped, light vehicle rollovers - phase ii of nhtsa's 1997-1998 vehicle rollover research program. we are concerned that with the amount of emphasis currently being placed on the blow-out/tread problem, that this other problem of tire debeading is being ignored. we have pictures of our vehicle from after the accident that show the tires separated from the rims (debeaded). we would be eager to discuss our rollover accident further in an attempt to help prevent further horrible accidents of this nature. if you have any further information that will help us understand the nature of our accident , we would be very appreciative. we are not sure at this point if we have enough information to proceed legally against either the vehicle or tire manufacturer.( dot number: tire size: 15in )

The 2 front tires on my ford explorer had steel cord showing through them at 38,00 miles i took the car to big o to have the tires replaced the informed me that the tires did not match the dot code that firestone is recalling but the new tires could not be put on the car without having the wheel barrings repacked. i don't know if ford has had problems with the front wheel assemby on the explorers or if the firestone tires are to blame but i would appreciate any information you can give me. i am afraid of the car now and i am out $547.00 on a car that i still consider to be new for these problems.( dot number: w2hl tire size: p235/75r15 )
On monday 8/21/00 while having scheduled maintenance performed on my '98 ford explorer, i was informed that the tires on my explorer were tires that had been recalled by firestone(p235/75r15 firestone wilderness at with a dot code of vdhlipy368). hester trucking, inc & tire service(hesters tire co.) the business performing the service offered a selection of tires. i called 1-800-465-1904 and spoke with firestone representatives, jason miller and david alvalbalos. they informed me that i could have the firestone tires replaced with any brand that i selected and firestone would reimburse me up to $100 per tire. we had a set of michelins installed. reynold hester (manager at hester's tire service 910-863-3149) did not have the forms needed to request a refund from firestone. i was told that the forms would be available on tuesday 8/22. i returned to the hester's tire co. tuesday evening to find that no forms were available. i contacted the tire wholesaler that does business with hester's tire(1-800-237-7479, zee westbrook and jeff), they informed me that a shipment of recalled firestone tires had been shipped to them from hester's tires and that the tires that i had replaced were probably in that shipment. i contacted the ford dealership where i purchased the explorer, (lafayette ford, service manager paula) she informed me that they did not have forms and that i should contact a firestone dealer. i contacted firestone dealers in fayetteville nc,lumberton nc .(blacks tire service) and in tar heel nc (allens tire service) and was informed that i should contact a ford dealer.

This corrects the information i submitted on 8/16/2000 to better describe that two failures occurred and both were on the right side of the vehicle. my 1998 ford explorer (1fmzu35p5wza15113) came equipped with the wildernessat tires. during the fall of 1998, i experienced 4 tire repairs and in the early part of 1999, 2 more tire repairs and two failures (note: four trips to arizona, from colorado, had occurred). the two failures occurred later during travel in 1999, one on i-40 outside albuquerque, nm (enroute to az at approx 62 mph, a separation at the sidewall/tread area) and the other in phoenix, az found as a leaking tire but identified, upon breakdown, as a non-repairable sidewall/thread separation at the thread line). each failure was replaced with firestone wilderness at tires. however, i lost confidence in the firestone tires and on may 6 1999 i replaced the four installed tires with michelin ltx (ms) tires, retaining the spare as an original firestone. *ak( dot number: unknown tire size: 235/75r/15 )

We found continuous cracks in all four of our 15 wilderness tires on thursday, august 10, 2000. firestone refused to replace them because the dot code was vnhl indicating that they were made in quebec. our ford dealer, jim ross, told us to go anywhere and buy any tires, and that ford of firestone would reimburse us. he said they were scarey looking. he was worried about my wife, luanne, driving on them. luanne bought 4 new michelins and had them put on for $507.32. since the damaged firestones were not made in decatur, it looks like we will not get our money back. we are upset about losing this much money, but my family's safety is more important than $500. i hope your office can look into this probable problem with these tires that so far have escaped the recall, before more lives are lost and property damaged. thank you so much for your time. sincerely, bill dugan( dot number: vnhl )

Holes appeared in the tires for no apparent reason. once it happed whil we were driving and the other time we parked the car and were sitting outside and suddenly we noticed that the tire was gong flat. we examined it and inflated it and found not screws, or sharp objects that might have caused it. the holes just appear on the tread for no apparent reason. we feel the tires are defective even thoguh they were not the ones made at the decatur plant, plus it's already in the news that a lot of the wilderness tires were mislabeled. as a consumer we do not trust firestone tires, their products are cheaply made and not safe. the company does not respond to our concerns and most of the time they give us the runaround. *ak( dot number: tire size: lx )

On saturday night july 8, 2000 my 18 year old daughter was returning home from a friends house on interstate 65. she had traveled approximately 5 miles when the left rear tire blew out. she was lucky she was able to control the vehicle to the side of the interstate. upon my arrival it looked as if the tire had blew out on the inside and the outside. the tire was barely still on the rim. i took the tire to a local firestone dealer on july 10, 2000 for replacement. the dealer could not pin point a reason for the failure and replaced the tire at a pro-rated price of $40.66. i noticed the replacement tire was manufactured in canada and the original tires (including the failure) were manufactured in the usa. now that there is a recall on firestone wilderness at tires, i wanted to make sure i recorded my experience and complaint.( dot number: w2co1px258 tire size: 9255/70r16 )

All 4 tires developed cracks in every other cleat where the tread joins the tire casing and along the beads. there was no tread separation but i felt it was imminent. portsmouth ford did not want to inspect the tires untill i insisted. they then told me i would have to wait for the next available appointment which was 2 weeks away.i finally called the national ford customer service number.they would not even talk to me about the defective tires untill i verbally forced a customer service agent to take a formal complaint. the people at the firestone national 800 number would not give me any information about warrrantee replacement. i had to locate a firestone tire service center in manchester, nh. firestone offered to replace the tires allowing 50% tread wear. the problem is they could not provide replacement tires for 5-6 months. to sum this up, i purchased 4 tires of another brand today. i have the lot number of the defective tires: vncu1tx048 (all 4 the same lot) i took digital pictures of the defects and have my receipts.( dot number: not known tire size: 255/70r16 )

This tire separated while traveling on i 37 from corpus christi, tx to san antonio, tx. there was a strong vibration and an extreme pull to the right while traveling at highway speed. upon arrival in san antonio, we sought out a firestone dealership and stopped at firestone tire & service center at 4906 walzam rd. i apprised the technician of the symptoms and he already knew what i was describing. he advised that the tire had separated but that they would need to check it for sure. on this tire, it had separated but had not come apart like the one we later experienced that i have already notified you. it occured on 7/24/2000 and caused an estimated $2,800.00 damage to the left rear quarter panel of my vehicle. the purpose of this notification is to advise you of a tire that was not part of the recall vd...... tires also failed and that there may be a design flaw in the tires themselves. the serial number on this tire was 8xhl1py0300. another troubling issue is the familarity of the technician with the problem even before he had to check it. how many other similar tires had he seen with this same problem? had firestone known of these problems prior to the us recall?( dot number: tire size: 23575r15 )

I think someone should be looking at the other 15 wilderness at tires that are not in the recall. we have a set on a 1998 explorer that has been excellently maintained. the tires have never been inflated less than the manufacturer's recommended 26 psi. in fact i have kept them inflated at 28 psi. the tires have 30,000 miles on them and exhibit only one crack but that crack is completely around the circumference of each tire and in approximately 1/2 from the perimeter on all four tires. i have not looked at the spare but i suspect it is ok since it has never been on the vehicle. our tires were made in canada and exhibit dot code vnhl1py477x5 and thus they are not in the recall according to ford and firestone. this should not happen to a tire at 30,000 miles. i had gone to both a firestone store and the ford dealership where we purchased the vehicle. the ford dealership said to contact firestone. when i went to the firestone store they did indeed inspect the tires and said they did not qualify for the recall. just thought you might like to know.( dot number: vnhl1py477 tire size: p235-75r15 )

Firestone and ford are not doing enough on this recall. this recall did not catch them by surprise as they have recalled tires in foreign nations without informing the american public. my explorer sits parked in the garage and clearly shows signs of tire seperation that is about to come. as of friday the 25th of august ford has told me another 45 days for tires, customer service is so poor at firestone i refuse to even deal with them. firestones top executives do not wish to talk to any consumers as i have tried to contact them on several occasions only to be transfered to lines that are non existant in the end. i do not beleive in filing lawsuits against corporations as i feel it hurts america more than it helps. however, because of the ignorance of ford and firestone , i feel these companies should pay to the point of bankrupcy. i am interested in joining a class action suit and wonder where do i go. thank you, jeff mayer( dot number: vdhl tire size: 235/75r15 )

My accident occurred at approximately 7:00 p.m. on 24 july 2000 as i was driving to my residence located at 613 yucca circle, harker heights, texas 76548, in my 1998 ford eddie bauer explorer. i was travelling east on highway 190 in the right hand lane at 60 mph, when a car pulled in front of the truck i was following. the truck braked causing me to brake. upon braking, both tires on the left hand side of the vehicle exploded causing me to go into a tail spin. i did everything possible to keep the vehicle on the road without hitting anyone else. fortunately, i did not hit another vehicle or hurt anyone else. my vehicle ended up rolling over four times and ended up facing in the opposite direction on the median. although the vehicle was completely totaled, i was fortunate enough not to have suffered life threatening injuries. the police, paramedics, and firemen arriving on the scene could not believe that i was alive. the vehicle had to be cut to get me out. there were witnesses to this accident who provided statements to the police. there was no citation issued. my right hand was badly cut, i had severed an artery and muscle, and received 12 stitches. my left ear was cut and had to be stitched. the left side of my body, to include my head, was badly bruised. this accident has had a serious physiological effect on me. it took two weeks for me to begin driving again. usaa, my insurance company, informed us, as a result of their investigation, that they had flagged my vehicle because the tires were the firestone tires being recalled and were found at fault for causing my accident. since purchasing my vehicle brand new in may 1998, it has been regularly serviced in accordance with the service manual, by cove ford in copperas cove, texas. wheels have also been rotated on a regular basis. at no time was i informed that my tires were unsafe or were the cause of previous accidents. had i of been informed by the ford motor company of possible tires.

My 1998 ford explorer (1fmzu35p5wza15113) came equipped with the wilderness tires. during the fall of 1998, i experienced 4 tire repairs and in the early part of 1999, 2 more tire repairs and two failures (note: four trips to arizona, from colorado, had occurred). the two failures occurred later during travel in 1999, one on i-40 outside albuquerque, nm (enroute to az at approx 62 mph, a separation at the sidewall/tread area) and the other in phoenix, az found as a leaking tire but identified, upon breakdown, as a non-repairable sidewall/thread separation at the thread line). each failure was replaced with firestone wilderness at tires. however, i lost confidence in the firestone tires and on may 6 1999 i replaced the four installed tires with michelin ltx (ms) tires, retaining the spare as an original firestone.( dot number: vd tire size: 235/75r/15 )

I have had vehicle for a little over a year. the tires were original to the vehicle. i have had two flats, one of which was a complete tire failure. the tire cracked all the way down to the sidewall. luckily the suv was being stopped when it happened. i now have a third of the original four that has a small spot where the steel belt is showing through. i have replaced all four tires with goodyear in light of the history of the tires and the recent information that has been presented concerning these tires. i definitely feel other sizes should be recalled. these tires are a menace. i'm so lucky that my failures happened in the circumstances that they did or i or my family might not be here today.( dot number: vncu ipx tire size: p255 70r16 )

Tire tread is showing sings of separation (cracked around circumference of tire, below tread line). firestone in springfield, va (703)9226565 confirms that this is a defect, however this is not a recalled tire. this tire was made in canada vn series, not vd. it is, however, showing the same danger signs the recalled tires are exhibiting. firestone refused to replace it under the recall, but did offer a prorated cost replacement (once they can find some tires to sell me).( dot number: tire size: 235r75-15 )

My ford explorer has been ford dealer (only) maintained from new. the firestone wilderness tires on it were at p235/75/r15 dot vnhl , tubeless radials. they had done 63000 miles when inspected by firestone technicians and found to have thread line cracking over 360 degrees on all four tires. the remaining thread depth was 0.25 inches on all tires -- wear was even. the thread depth was more than the height of the molded low thread level indicators.( dot number: vnhl tire size: 235/75/r15 )

All 4 tires have crack lines all the way around where the tread is beginning to crack away from the main tire. the tire has been inspected by the local firestone dealer and the local ford dealer and both agreed the tires were seperating and probably very dangerous but said they werent on the recall list and said there was nothing they could do. the ford mechanic stated he had seen many others with the same dot code with similiar crack lines but they werent allowed to replace them. when the local firestone dealer was questioned about replacing the tire under its waranty, i was told that if it was on a ford explorer, it had no waranty and there was nothing they could do. when i showed him my waranty papers he said it didnt matter, that the explorer was considered a recreational vehicle and they didnt recognize waranties on recreational vehicles. i contacted the national customer service offices of both companies (firestone and ford) but was told that there was nothing they could do until the tire was recalled. at this time only the wilderness at with a dot of vdhl has been recalled, not the vnhl which is what i have (even though the atx tires from the same canadian plant have been recalled. the tires are making a loud roaring and bumping sound and i have a written report from the ford service dealer where they inspected the tires and saw the seperation lines on all tires (but i am told they can do nothing about it until it is recalled, even though it may be a very imidiate danger to drive.) i asked doug smith the service manager if they were reporting the damage to the dot code vnhl tires as they were inspected and visually observed and he stated they were not. he stated they only reported whether the tires inspected were ones on the recall or not. please help, these tires are dangerous but no one wants to take responsibility for them.( dot number: vnhl tire size: p235/75r15 )

I am currently leasing an explorer with wilderness at tires that were not part of the recall. however, i have a wilderness at tire that is showing signs of tread separation (an employee of firestone agreed that this tire is failing just like the recalled tires). my ford dealer will not replace the tires because they are not part of the recall and firestone will only replace them with firestone tires, which i don't want for obvious reasons. how can they only recall wilderness tires made from their decatur, il plant? are we to assume that these tires are made differently at their other plants? if so, why are my tires failing the exact same way? what makes me really upset is the fact that they insist that the tires are safe and that it is the tire owners' fault for the tires failures. they refuse to take the blame. i rotate my tires and have the pressure checked with every oil change (every 3000 miles) and still my tires are failing. if the fault was the tire owners fault, then wouldn't you see the same type of statistics from goodyear tires and michelin tires? are we assume that firestone tire owners take significantly less care of their tires than other tire owners? the nhtsa needs to step in and protect the people by forcing firestone to recall all wilderness at tires -- not just the ones firestone wants to. even if 80% of the wilderness at failures were from tires made from the il plant, does that mean we should recall those tires only? what about the other 20% (where i obviously fall)? don't their (my) lives matter as well? firestone should not be allowed to handle this situation the way they want to. the nhtsa needs to take charge, save people, and make firestone take the blame instead of pushing onto its tire owners. corporations should have to pay for killing people just like people have to. *ak( dot number: tire size: p235/75/15 )

The side walls on the 16 inch firestone tires on my 1998 ford explorer, eddie bauer model began to crack and the thread began to separate. i brought my suv into a firestone tire and service center. the service manager inspected the tires and agreed that the 16 wilderness at tires were defective. however, he said that he could not replace them since firestone hq said there was nothing wrong with their 16 wilderness at tires. contrary to hq claim the service manager seeing the obvious defect/failure of the tires agreed to gave me a small allowance on the tires if i bought 4 brand new bridgestone tires. fearing for the safety of my family i had no choice but to pay full retail, less the allowance in order to get new tires. please for the safety of the driving public , make a full investigation of the 16 inch firestone wilderness at tires and get these unsafe, defective 16 firestone wilderness at tires off the road and market before people are killed.( dot number: tire size: p255/70/16 )

Have had a problem with the front tires wearing on the outside tread. in hich the dealer has been working with me since checking the alignments, inflation and rotating the front tires to no avail to correct the unusual wearing of the tire. the first incident was on 04/20/00 and the tire had less than 10,000 miles. and it appeared that the tire had a cut (small blow out) in the sidewall at edge of the tread area. it was replaced with the spare tire and another wilderness at tire was purchased as the spare. the second incident occurred on 08/03/00 and the tire had approx. 13,000 miles on it. this time the damage was more severe, there was a blown out splitting the entire sidewall down into the tread. it was all i could do to keep the explorer from rolling over.front tires: unusual wear pattern, cracks in them at the tread/sidewall area, as if they were dry rotted and they also had small cuts in the same area where the blowouts were happening.  While driving at 55mph the left rear tire blew apart. the vehicle swerved in traffic and i had difficulty controlling it in slowing down to a stop. initially i thought the vehicle was going to roll over. the outer tire tread separated from the rest of the tire and was mostly in tact. the rest of the tire was severely damaged. after having the tire changed i took the tire to the firestone store in arlington, tx (little road) and they replaced the tire at no charge. there was some damage to the wheel rim. if firestone is going to replace these tires they should not forget to change out the spare which is the same tire on the ford explorer.( dot number: ???? tire size: p23575r15 )

We experienced an unexplained blow out of our right rear tire driving down berthoud pass in the mountains of colorado. firestone replaced the tire at no charge. they found no explaination for the blowout. the weather was cold, colorado in march, at a high elevation. heat was not a factor. the tires had less than 5000 miles on them. we are very fortunate we did not lose control and plummet off of the mountain. this problem is not just occurring in warm southern states.( dot number: )

This is a confirmation of troubles with the mentioned firestone tires. we had three incidents of the tires blowing out, when traveling at speeds between 30 and 50 miles per hour. there were absolutely no penetrations of the tire rubber, as the tires had failed. three different tires had to be fixed, two patched from small partial tears on the outer layer, and one absolutely destroyed from failure. these tires had to be replaced by michelen tires at 21, 500. before replacing the tires, we did not drive far distances after the repeated failures, and even took the car to a dealer to inspect the vehicle (also in newman, ga), who did not find any traces of punctures in the tires. we spend good money to get these awful tires (and unsafe) fixed and $424 in the new tires. firestone was written and never responded, as i have now told all friends about their products, lack of response, and frankly what i believe to be an unsafe product of which i was unable to receive replacement tires because they wouldn't fit under they standard warranty of which has so many stipulations that it does nothing for the consumer. i hope this helps in the investigation and would frankly like to see if a response could come from firestone's end as i am sorely disappointed. many thanks.( dot number: tire size: 285/75/15 )

I recently heard about firestone's recall notice. my daughter and niece were driving my 1998 explorer on highway 85 in gaston county, north carolina, last october. the speed limit is 65 miles per hour. the back tire blew out/came off the rim and caused an accident. the explorer flipped over twice and slid on its side across 3 lanes of traffic. fortunately, no other cars were involved. as a result of the accident, my daughter and niece were taken to the hospital for injuries (whiplash, cuts, abrasions, and bruises). they had follow up visits to the doctor for pain and stiffness and were put on medication. the explorer was totaled. therefore, i lost the several thousand dollars that had already been paid on the vehicle, plus medical bills, had to purchase another vehicle, and my insurance rates were raised. needless to say, i did not purchase another explorer. also, one of my brothers also had an accident in his explorer. the tire came off when he was going around a curve, and the explorer flipped over and was totaled. my brother was injured, but fortunately not killed. some information about my vehicle i no longer have because the vehicle was taken by nationwide insurance.( dot number: )

On my way to poway,ca, southbound i-5, my car began to pull to the right and shake. i pulled off to check my tires. checking all 4 tires for correct inflation, i found nothing wrong. i got back on the freeway, as i was out in the middle of nowhere, lowered my speed and continued. as i approached poway the front end started to make a thumping noise. i was less than 1 mile from my sister's house, so i lowered my speed again and finished my trip. we looked at the tires and noticed that the right front tire had a bulge in it. it was about 5 in size along the tire tread. on 7/17 i took my explorer to the ford dealer of poway (perry ford) for an inspection. robert saw the bubble and said that all four tires needed to be replaced. he suggested a new set of firestones. having had problems with them on our 1993 ranger, and seeing the bubble on a tire that should not have to be replaced i refused. he was very persistant saying firestone makes a great tire, but i refussed. having all four tires replaced, mounted, balanced, and an alignment, it cost $550.21 to get myself and my children home to anaheim. when we bought the explorer in 1998, we asked for the tires at that time, before pick-up, to be replaced as we had had problems with firestones on the ranger. the dealer would not replace them, but gave us the name of a place to go to get new tires and possibly at a discount as the firestone tires were new and could be bought back. if this condition has been under investigation for awhile, why would the ford dealer of poway suggest(almost insist) that the same tire be put back on?? isn't that a little neglectful of robert and the dealer knowing i was going to get back on the freeway with my children and drive over 80 miles? i am very angry and upset about hearing about this investigation going on and the fact that nothing was said to me, and it cost me $550.00 for a problem that they created. please let me know of any further information.

Unsatisfactory performance from firestone wilderness at p235/75r15 (suv) tires. after routine service and (second) tire rotation/balance at 12,000 miles, i noticed my vehicle pulling to the right while on the highway. i returned the vehicle to the servicing dealer (kearny mesa ford, san diego ca), and asked them to repair the problem. after several attempts, they were unable to rotate the tires and still have them balanced within specification. consequently, the tires were returned to their original positions on the vehicle. the explanation given to me was that there was likely a loose belt within one of the tires preventing it from balancing correctly, but since the vehicle didn't seem to pull when this tire was mounted on the rear, i should just leave it there and not rotate my tires in the future. when i inquired about warranty and/or replacement, i was informed that because the tires had 12,000 miles accrued, there was nothing i could do. as a result of not rotating my tires (...something i normally do as scheduled), my tires have worn irregularly and i believe have worn out prematurely (...in this case, approximately 40,000 miles; however i generally get much greater tire life due to the highway driving i do and proper tire maintenance). i am hoping this information will be helpful in your investigation of the firestone wilderness at tires.*ak( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

When the voluntary recall was announced, i contacted an authorized center, was placed on a waiting list, and was told i should have replacement tires in three weeks. last weeked, four weeks later, i was informed that no progress had been made and it could possibly be 9 months before i received replacement tires. because of safety concerns, i had the five tires replaced with another manufacturer's tires yesterday. according to the recall notice, i am only eligible for $100 per tire reimbursement. unfortunately this amount does not cover the cost of my replacement tires. i do not believe the $100 per tire reimbursement is equitable because my out of pocket expense for the replacement tires is approximately $200. in viewing firestones website earlier today, i noticed under a customer satisfaction plan, consumers who replace other tires under a nhtsa consumer advisory are eligible for a $140 per tire reimbursment. given the fact that this additional amount would cover the out-of-pocket cost of my replacement tires, why is there disparity in the reimbursement amounts?*ak (dot number: vdhl1py507 tiresize: p235/75r15)

My safety concern is the spare tire not subject to the firestone recall. ford's contract with firestone required five tires of the same size, tread design, load capacity, etc to be installed on my 1998 ford explorer 4 wheel drive. that was done to assure that when spare tires were used either in a five tire rotation or as an emergency tire, they would all be of the same tread design, etc so that the vehicle would perform safely. four of my firestone tires were subject to the recall, but not the spare. i replaced the four on the ground with big o brand tires meeting ford's specs, and the spare as well in order to be in compliance with ford;s specifications. firestone has reimbursed me $400.00 for the four recalled tires, but refuses to pay for the spare which i cannot safely use on my vehicle. since i exercised my option offered by firestone to use another manufacturers tires, which do not match firestone's tread design, you need to order firestone to replace the spare tire at the same reimbursement level offered for the recalled tires. doing so will bring me and others into conformity with ford's safety handling concerns for the four wheel drive to have tires of the same tread design on the road during five tire rotation or during emergency needs. thank you. robert j. whittaker. jr.( dot number: vnhl tire size: p235/75r15 )

Firestone tires made at plant other then decatur. our family is leaving on a 1200 mile trip in about two weeks. firestone originally checked tires and indicated to me that they are ok because they were made at their washington state plant and not the decatur plant and that they are not subject to the recall. i accepted there explanation but after several weeks of poor publicity on the part of ford and firestone i decided to have them checked by another dealer. the tires were pulled from the explorer and it was found that one tire(right front) indicated the tread was pulling way from the rest of the tire. all tires were properly inflated and rotated since the vehicle was purchased new in 1998. i replaced the tires with another brand that is acceptable to ford and paid for the tires myself. i have kept the tires and the one that was failing in clearly marked and highlighted. i took the tires to both my ford dealer and the local firestone dealer and was advised that there is nothing they can do to reimburse me because they are not being recalled. the cost was $482. for 4 tires. the technician that replaced the tires is experienced and has been in the tire business for 5-6 years. he indicated that in his opinion the tire met all the criteriea of those being recalled and that the possiblity of failure was very high particularly with the type of driving we would be doing(long distance, warm climate and high speeds). my concern is that firestone may have a design defect in the tire no matter in which plant it is made. i believe the investigation into this tire should be broadened to include all plants making the wilderness at.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

I bought my ford explorer new, in april 1998. by august of 1998 i had had 4 flat tires, 3 of which were the original tires. i had a flat on the way to florida and one on the way home (blowout). after the 1st flat i went to my local ford dealer and he told me tires were under a separate warranty. i went back to him after the 3rd flat and he ask me what i was running over. i replied that i was running over the same thing everyone else was-the road. after the 4th flat he agreed to buy me only 2 new tires. i can't tell you the mental anguish and stress i felt everytime i put my family in that vehicle. i now have 3 of the recalled tires on my car, and again the anguish and stress because i'm driving around on these tires while i'm on a waiting list for replacement tires. i'm disappointed in ford and firestone, to say the least, because profit is more important than human lives. all i can say is the lord was watching over us on all of those flats. we were luckier than others. *ak( dot number: vdhlipy tire size: p235/75r15 )

The tires on my ford explorer are not on the safety recall list. however, i had them inspected by a tire shop and they recommended that they be immediately replaced. there is a continiuos crack along the tread line of all four tires. even though these tires were probably not produced in the plant effected by the recall i feel that they are unsafe to drive. the tires do have 43,000 miles on them and were kept at the ford recommended pressure of 26psi. i am afraid that other consumers will look at the serial numbers on their own tires and not take them in to be checked, because they are not the ones listed in the recall. also, some people may not be financially able to afford replacement tires. therefore, i feel the nhtsa should considered investigating wether wilderness at tires from other firestone plants should be recalled. i have saved the old tires in case they are recalled at a later time. if there is anywhere i can send them to be tested please feel free to contact me. sincerely, dawn m. smith( dot number: w2hl tire size: p23575r505 )

This tire went flat while the vehicle was parked after a 70 mile drive at highway speeds in 90 degree weather. when taken to a local tire repair shop the next day, the diagnosis was the tread had separated. this particular dot code is not included in the recall. however, i thought it important to let you know that tires other than the dot vdhl are experiencing tread separation. i have replaced all four of the firestone tires with another brand at my own expense. this is too important to risk my family's safety!( dot number: vnhl tire size: p235/75r15 )

I am concerned that the current recall may be too limited. on january 24, 2000, i experienced a tread seperation while driving on our state hwy 41 at approx. 50 mph during a rainstorm. fortunately, i was on a level and straight stretch of road when the failure occured. had the incident occured 5 miles earlier, i would have been in mountainous terrain and may not have survived to file this report. i turned the tire in to firestone that day and was provided a replacement. i purchased a matched 2nd for the other side. with the current controversy and recall, i chose to replace my tires with those of a different and still reputable manufacturer. i now have 5 pirelli scorpions of the same size as the original equipment. i have also contacted firestone's district office in this area. i was told to bring my original wilderness tires to my local dealer and submit the reimbursement forms. although there is no gaurantee that i will be reimbursed, i informed the local office that the district office asked that they may wish to study these tires. when i told the local store staff of the regional office's directive to me, the mechanic indicated they would likely destroy the tires since they were not part of the current recall. i asked the store manager steve to check with the district office first. i am not only a physician now working in an emergency facility that serves our mountain communities but was also trained as a physicist. it is not often that you have a scientific observor involved in a reported event such as this one. i hope that one of your staff will contact me soon for further information. i also hope that firestone will act in a responsible manner to ascertain with reasonable certainty the true extent of their problem. thank you.....joseph chudy, md( dot number: w2hl1py407 tire size: p235/75r15 )

July 19, mid-afternoon, while traveling north on i-35w north of hillsboro, tx, my left front tire suffered complete tread separation, alerting us to a problem with a loud sound. i pulled on to the shoulder with trucks whizzing past; and with my 20 year old daughter, we eye-checked to see what was wrong. we could see black stuff on the highway about 75 yards back and assumed i'd hit some road debris. we saw that the front-under-bumper spoiler was dragging the ground and that the front left fog light was damaged. we returned home that afternoon, traveling within the stream of traffic. once we were home, in examining the front of the truck more closely in my drive, we saw that the tire tread was completely gone with just the steel belt showing. i drove carefully to the nearest tire company the next morning and had two front tires replaced with new wilderness at tires, unaware there were problems with this brand of firestone tire. i had my truck repaired. on august 5, 2000, as a result of news accounts i called firestone and followed their directions to have my back tires examined, carrying the documentation of the money i'd already spent replacing two tires and repairing the damage to my truck. they recommended that i replace the remaining two tires immediately, giving me credit for my contract on the tires of app $25 per tire. they replaced the tires with two more wilderness at tires. the total cost of the tire replacements and repair to the truck is $493.04. i now have just heard on abc tv news (08/10/00) that the replacement tires are problems, also. my daughter and i are lucky that we did not have an accident when the tire failed and that only minor damage was suffered by the truck. however, i'm no longer sure about my safety while traveling at freeway speeds during our hot summers here in texas.*ak( dot number: unknown tire size: p235/75r15 )

I was driving north on i-75 approx. 8 miles north of gainesville,fl on 7/31 & experienced a complete tire failure at 70 mph. the sensation was of having hit something in the road, but i saw nothing in the rear view mirror (except lots of big trucks bearing down on me). almost immediately, i began to lose steering ability. i was able to control and stop the vehicle with great difficulty. the car swung out as far as one-quarter turn to the left in heavy traffic but i was able to countersteer and get off the road. the aaa wrecker attendant told me that he had seen lots of these blowouts and that the tread usually ripped all the way off and tore up the undercarriage of the car. luckily, i had about 4 inches of material holding the tire together when i finally was able to stop. this incident occurred on an extremely hot day at about 3:00 pm. please note that the dot# on this tire is not vd, but vn. i am very concerned that firestone has not been totally forthcoming about the safety of this tire. *ak( dot number: vnhl 1py tire size: 235/75r15 )

On february 27, 2000 my daughter and two friends were returning to our home in downers grove, illinois from iowa city, iowa where they were visiting my son and other daughter at college. while on eastbound interstate 88, at approximately mile marker 15, traveling about 65 miles per hour, the right front tire suddenly exploded. pieces of the tire flew in all directions with some hitting both the windshield and side windows. the vehicle immediately fell onto the rim and jerked to the right, forcing the vehicle out of the left-hand lane, through the right-hand lane and onto the right shoulder before it could be stopped. we were extremely fortunate that no one was in the right hand lane or on the right hand shoulder and especially fortunate that the vehicle did not roll over. my daughter and her friends were very upset and shaken. after replacing the blown tire with the spare tire they continued their trip and arrived in downers grove. on february 28th i took several pictures of the damage to the vehicle and the remains of the tire and i would be happy to share them with you. on february 29th i went to the local firestone store where i strongly inquired about the safety of the tire and its history of blowouts. i was assured by the manager of the firestone store, ron degner, that there was no history of this problem and that my daughter probably ran over something on the highway. i paid firestone $472.78 for a new tire, reconditioned rim, and all the other work associated with replacing the tire. i then went to joe madden body shop, the ford dealer where i purchased the vehicle. i strongly inquired about the safety of the vehicle and the wilderness tires and any history of blowouts. i was assured by the body shop adjuster, bob schretter, that there was no history of this problem. i arranged for the appropriate repairs to my vehicle, and after two visits to the body shop paid a total of $331.94. i was reimbursed $265.09 from my insurance company. *ak

I was driving southbound in the right lane of ih 35 in southern oklahoma at about the # 3 mile marker. we had left wichita, ks earlier that day and were enroute to our home in carrollton, tx. i had been noticing a shudder in the vehicle not unlike the one i felt prior to learning that another one of the tires having separated on a trip from corpus christi to san antonio earlier in the summer. the firestone dealer in s. a. advised that you could not tell by looking at the tire on the vehicle that there was a problem. i paid an adjusted price for that tire and just purchased another new wilderness tire on 7/28/2000 both of which were mounted on the front of the vehicle. the two tires on the rear were originals. i heard a loud bang to my left and immediately felt the vehicle lurch into the left lane. i believe that only my police training in driving vehicles at high speeds enabled me to keep control of my vehicle. i was able to steer it to the right shoulder and due to the tire only separating and not losing air pressure was i able to limp into gainesville, tx to glen polk ford. i was told by them that they had never seen a vehicle with so much damage from a tire separation. i had to pay for another adjusted wilderness tire and we were on our way. i have since learned of several lawsuits against ford and firestone for fatal accidents resulting from tire separations of this same tire on explorer's and minivans. as a coincidence, when i went to get an estimate on the damage at a ford dealership in carrollton, one of the repair estimators showed me another explorer with wilderness tires in the auto body shop with extensive damage to the right rear due to a tire separation incident. the driver of that vehicle was lucky because they were towing a trailer with a porsche on it when the tire separated and an accident did not occur. *ak( dot number: v0h11py527 tire size: p235/75r15 )

Had a tire failure exactly as described in recent (8/00) news reports - tread separated from otherwise well-maintained tire going 65mph on the freeway - was able to safely navigate to a stop. it was a firestone atx wilderness tire, standard equipment on the vehicle. contacted dealer with no success since no recall has been issued - went to bridgestone vendor and had inspection done - cracking at the tread line was found in all three other tires (excluding the one replaced 7/19/00). i use the vehicle for many long distance trips across the desert, with my 4yr old - felt forced to replace all four tires for safety sake at my own expense, as the dealer would do nothing since no recall has been issued yet. please notify me at the address herein if the nhtsa determines a recall on these tires is warranted, as i'd like to try to recoup some of my expenditure replacing these tires pre-recall. i believe these tires are seriously defective and dangerous, especially in high heat conditions such as the southwest. the manufacturers should be responsible for replacing this defective equipment, not the consumer. thank you for your consideration.  When towing tralier with this tire/vehicle combination at speeds over 65 (in a 70 mph zone) mph the vehicle would begin to fishtail. the trailer and its load only weighed 1,400-1,500 pounds on each occasion with correct balance. the last time this vehicle towed a trailer with these tires the trailer went into an uncontrolable fishtail. this resulted in the vehicle ending in the median with the trailer breaking loose. after purchasing new dunlop tires and a new trailer the vehicle never had a problem with fishtailing. on a few occasions i towed an 18 foot boat at lower speeds and realized very quickly that there was no way it could pull its rated limit of 5,500 pounds (that boat combination was 2,200 pounds). i thinks the nhtsa shouls test this tire under towing conditions as well. these tires never peeled, but they were not given a chance as they were replaced at 10,000 miles. i have towed enough in my day to realize what is user error or equipment failure. these tires are not safe to tow with at least not on an explorer. *ak( dot number: tire size: 2357515 )

The tire essentially blew out and went immediately flat, while traveling at 65 mph on the interstate. if it had been a front tire it probably would have caused an acident. the local firestone dealer said i ran over something that caused a puncture, but i know that wasn't the case, as there was a sizeable hole in the tread area of the tire and there were strands of radial reinforcing wire inside and outside of the tire. in light of the recent publicity on the subject, i thought it might be useful to pass along this information. *ak( dot number: )
