On september 6, 2005, odi received a petition requesting that the agency investigate allegations of engine spark plug ejection in certain model year 1997 through 2004 ford vehicles with triton v-8 and v-10 engines.odi received a total of 474 non-duplicative complaints on the subject vehicles where the complainant, or the dealer repairing the vehicle, reported that a spark plug detached from the cylinder and/or ejected from the engine.as of december 8, 2005, odi is not aware of any allegations where the alleged defect resulted in a loss of vehicle control, a crash, an injury, or a fatality in any of the 10,319,810 subject vehicles.in addition, odi is aware of only two incidents where the vehicle stalled without restart.information contained in the odi consumer complaints and obtained from 72 telephone interviews with complainants showed the following:(1) 99% of the complaints were on my 1997 to 2002 subject vehicles.(2) most the complainants reported hearing a loud pop while driving or upon starting up the vehicle followed by a loud, repetitive clicking or popping sound.(3) many of the complainants reported that the popping sound was accompanied by some loss of vehicle power; however, in 99% of the incidents reported, the vehicle did not stall.in the very few incidents where the vehicle did stall, most vehicles could be restarted.(4) only a small percentage of the complainants cited that they smelled gas or a slight burning smell when the incident occurred.(5) in all but a very few incidents, vehicle damage was limited to the engine.in one incident, the complaint reported that the fuel rail was damaged and replaced after one of the spark plugs ejected from the engine; however, the complainant reported that the damage did not result in any type of fuel leak or fire.in another incident, the only incident where a fire was alleged, the complainant reported that no fluid leak was observed, but that a fire resulted after the spark plug had ejected from the engine and he had restarted the vehicle and driven to another location.none of the complainants reported any damage to the vehicle hood.(6) only two complainants reported that they observed what appeared to be some drops of fuel coming from the cylinder where the spark plug had failed or on the spark plug itself; however, each of these complainants reported that there was no smoke or flames as a result of his incident.as the petitioner noted, and odi |

I was at my office working when my 5 year old daughter came to me saying mommy it's an emergency, your truck is smoking! (i had been at the office working for an hour and a half after picking my children up from school.) i opened the back door to see what she was talking about and saw my truck engulfed in flames. i ran back inside the to call 911. a man had come inside the office to tell us a truck was on fire, he was already on the phone with 911. i moved my children to the front of the office, yelled for everyone parked by my truck to move their vehicles, and went outside in a panic. by the time the fire department, police department and amr arrived, the fire had spread to the driver's side of the interior, the grill (front of the truck) was melted, the entire hood and front left side of the truck were burned, the engine was melted, and the front left tire had exploded and partially melted. *jb

Service bulletin 00m12 from ford called for replacement of timing chain tensioner. tensioner was replaced but did not solve problem. returned to ford and was confirmed to be coming from tensioner. was directed by dealer that ther was no other fix for problem but would not cause damage. was told that if part failed ford would warranty for 5 yrs or 75,000 miles. part failed causing timing chain to slip and break, causing #6 cylinder piston to strike valve and put hole in piston. ford now states that they are not responsable and will provide no relief for repair. ford dealer advises that should have been covered but ford makes final decision. ford's final position is that age/mileage of vehicle problem is now my problem. vehicle is 1999 explorer with 60,000 miles which meets both of their cryteria in their service bulletin. now ford wants me to pay $4500 for new motor.*ak

The explorer makes a rattling/marbling noise coming from the bottom of the engine. joe cotton ford informed me that ford motor co. states that the way to deal with this problem is to remove the carbon in the engine and drive the vehicle with repeated cycles of running the engine over 3,000rpm's. repeated treatment of the engine with carbon cleaners by the ford dealer and driving the auto over 3,000rpms has not eliminated the problem. in fact the rattling is getting louder. i have checked the nhtsa web site and have found many other complaints by other 1999 ford explorer owners on the same issue. this problem seems to be a systemic problem with this vehicle and engine. ford refuses to fix the problem.*ak

We have had a hood latch recall, cruise control recall, questions about a tire recall (firestone), power steering fluid leak, cv boot rip, wipers turning on with the turn signal, 1 engine replaced due to 0 psi oil at idle (did they really replace it or just say they did?) several independent re-evaluations after the new engine had even more noises, fuel injectors replaced, a mysterious clunking sound on the right side during left turns, ~5000mi after 1st engine replacement another ford repair center is now saying that the engine has 0psi at and we need another engine. we feel like this 99 explorer (with currently <35,000mi)is a lemon and we are tired of recalls, repairs, waiting for engines. we want a dependable car! we have taken immaculate care of the car, have had professionals do the work on it (usually ford dealerships) and yet we are afraid that the warrentee will run out and we will have an expensive problem or, worse, the car will fail and someone will get hurt! does this car qualify as a lemon. if not what does? if so, what are our options? p.s. all of the mentioned problems are documented by ford dealership records that are in our possession.

Dt: the contact stated vehicle stalled. although the engine died it easily restarted. he took the vehicle to a dealer. the dealer discovered the problem was the intake manifold gasket. there was a special service campaign # 01m112 that concerned the intake manifold gasket and the timing chain. however, due to the vehicle's mileage it was not included in the campaign. no repairs have been made. *ak

The biggest problem i have now is my transmission, on august 1st, my explorer lost its reverse, it is now august 25, and i still do not have my car, they fixed it on aug 20, it broke that night, took it back aug 22, broke again and then took it back that night and now they still have it and dont know what is wrong with it. i told them all i want is a car, but they say they cannot give me one. why? i dont have a car, i lease the one i have, cant drive it, still have to pay for it, and they wont give me a loaner.

Idle air control valve sticks shut, shutting down engine whenever you lift off the gas pedal. i drove the car home being careful not to lift my foot completely off the gas. someone could easily lift off the gas in an intersection for example, and have the car stall immediately. it is my opinion that a part failing that causes the car to stall like that is a safety problem. the service manager at the dealer told me that the idle air control valve was often on back order. this leads me to believe that these things are failing often.*ak

I have a 1999 ford explorer xlt with a v-6 sohc 4 liter engine. the car has not properly accelerated since purchase in 2000, it has constantly stalled while driving and the dealer could not determine the problem because the check engine light was not on. i found out february 16, 2005 that i have a broken intake manifold gasket and it cost over $1,000 to fix. i have searched the internet related to this problem and found there are eight ford models manufactured from 1996 through 2001 with this problem. ford refuses to acknowledge this defect to consumers but according to the article inthe attached link, they have extended their warranty on this part to the police department and taxi companies that have purchased the affected cars. please visit the website for more info.http://www.gm-v6lemons.com/mediaattn.htm thank you for any help you can provide peter delvecchia. *jb

Dt: the contact owns a 1999 ford explorer. the contact called about the current nhtsa investigation dp05005 concerning the engine and engine cooling/the spark plug. a spark plug wire burned and it messed up the egr sensor. this occurred on september 16, 2005 while going out of town ,and they noticed the spark plug wire burned out and burned a hose to the vacuum hose as well as other wires. the vacuum hose and the spark plug were replaced . this still did not solve the problem. the contact took the vehicle to a repair shop and mechanic determined that the egr sensor was bad according to the diagnostic test, and that it had to be replaced . also, it showed a vacuum leak and on the upper intake platinum. they found a bunch of cracks in it. the upper intake platinum had to be replaced. *ak

When the automobile(ford explorer 1999 sohc v6) is in cold weather and you start it it seems to misfire or act like there is an air leak. i have read several post on the internet and people seem to see this problem alot on certain year ford explorers. the have said that it is caused by an air leak around the exhaust manafold that only shows up when the engine is cold because the part is shrunk and does not fit but once the car warms up the part expands and acts as if there is no problems. when starting the car in warm weather you never see this problem. i have not had this fixed on my car since i park in a garage i rarely see this.

Check engine light came, but car appeared to run/perform normally. when the light came on, i was low on fuel. had dealer check, reported taht i needed new fuel pump, there were leaks at intake gaskets & cost to repair would be about $1,200. second scan by another auto shop could not get the same computer codes as dealer. check engine light was reset. on 1/24/2002, when fuel tank was very low, check engine came on again. not convinced what the problem is! i am certain that water in the fuel is part of the problem. i am not convinced that a new fuel pump is needed.*ak
