I was at my office working when my 5 year old daughter came to me saying mommy it's an emergency, your truck is smoking! (i had been at the office working for an hour and a half after picking my children up from school.) i opened the back door to see what she was talking about and saw my truck engulfed in flames. i ran back inside the to call 911. a man had come inside the office to tell us a truck was on fire, he was already on the phone with 911. i moved my children to the front of the office, yelled for everyone parked by my truck to move their vehicles, and went outside in a panic. by the time the fire department, police department and amr arrived, the fire had spread to the driver's side of the interior, the grill (front of the truck) was melted, the entire hood and front left side of the truck were burned, the engine was melted, and the front left tire had exploded and partially melted. *jb

We have had a hood latch recall, cruise control recall, questions about a tire recall (firestone), power steering fluid leak, cv boot rip, wipers turning on with the turn signal, 1 engine replaced due to 0 psi oil at idle (did they really replace it or just say they did?) several independent re-evaluations after the new engine had even more noises, fuel injectors replaced, a mysterious clunking sound on the right side during left turns, ~5000mi after 1st engine replacement another ford repair center is now saying that the engine has 0psi at and we need another engine. we feel like this 99 explorer (with currently <35,000mi)is a lemon and we are tired of recalls, repairs, waiting for engines. we want a dependable car! we have taken immaculate care of the car, have had professionals do the work on it (usually ford dealerships) and yet we are afraid that the warrentee will run out and we will have an expensive problem or, worse, the car will fail and someone will get hurt! does this car qualify as a lemon. if not what does? if so, what are our options? p.s. all of the mentioned problems are documented by ford dealership records that are in our possession.

Idle air control valve sticks shut, shutting down engine whenever you lift off the gas pedal. i drove the car home being careful not to lift my foot completely off the gas. someone could easily lift off the gas in an intersection for example, and have the car stall immediately. it is my opinion that a part failing that causes the car to stall like that is a safety problem. the service manager at the dealer told me that the idle air control valve was often on back order. this leads me to believe that these things are failing often.*ak

Dt: the contact owns a 1999 ford explorer. the contact called about the current nhtsa investigation dp05005 concerning the engine and engine cooling/the spark plug. a spark plug wire burned and it messed up the egr sensor. this occurred on september 16, 2005 while going out of town ,and they noticed the spark plug wire burned out and burned a hose to the vacuum hose as well as other wires. the vacuum hose and the spark plug were replaced . this still did not solve the problem. the contact took the vehicle to a repair shop and mechanic determined that the egr sensor was bad according to the diagnostic test, and that it had to be replaced . also, it showed a vacuum leak and on the upper intake platinum. they found a bunch of cracks in it. the upper intake platinum had to be replaced. *ak

Automatic transmission is slipping in any gear. it doesn't shift gears correctly when accelerating. transmission only shifts correctly into 1st gear, and double shifts into 2nd and 3rd gears after letting off gas. transmission shifts sometimes from high to low, causing vehicle to pull. overdrive light intermittently would go on and off. was repaired at dealer. on 1-18-2001. dealer replaced multiple parts in transmission 02-15-2001, transmission locked up and wouldn't move.torque converter and pump with housing were replaced. on 6-29-2001, transmission was still pulling. dealer replaced a stuck evr valve and replaced it. *ak front and rear rotors warped, dealer replaced, abs light illumianted, dealer replaced rear speed sensor, brakes are noisy. passenger window shakes, dealer lubed tracks. motor makes rattling noise when being driven steadily. steering gets stiff and makes a whining noise. air conidtioner was repaired. goodyear tire blewout, this tire was a replacement for firestone recall 00t005. *slc

When the automobile(ford explorer 1999 sohc v6) is in cold weather and you start it it seems to misfire or act like there is an air leak. i have read several post on the internet and people seem to see this problem alot on certain year ford explorers. the have said that it is caused by an air leak around the exhaust manafold that only shows up when the engine is cold because the part is shrunk and does not fit but once the car warms up the part expands and acts as if there is no problems. when starting the car in warm weather you never see this problem. i have not had this fixed on my car since i park in a garage i rarely see this.

Dt: the contact stated vehicle stalled. although the engine died it easily restarted. he took the vehicle to a dealer. the dealer discovered the problem was the intake manifold gasket. there was a special service campaign # 01m112 that concerned the intake manifold gasket and the timing chain. however, due to the vehicle's mileage it was not included in the campaign. no repairs have been made. *ak

Check engine light came, but car appeared to run/perform normally. when the light came on, i was low on fuel. had dealer check, reported taht i needed new fuel pump, there were leaks at intake gaskets & cost to repair would be about $1,200. second scan by another auto shop could not get the same computer codes as dealer. check engine light was reset. on 1/24/2002, when fuel tank was very low, check engine came on again. not convinced what the problem is! i am certain that water in the fuel is part of the problem. i am not convinced that a new fuel pump is needed.*ak
