Tl* the contact owns a 1999 ford explorer with wilderness tires, size p255/70/r16. he stated that while driving 70 mph the driver side rear tire blew out. as a consequence the vehicle rolled over and was completely destroyed. he was taken to the hospital and sustained severe injuries. the tire that failed was the spare tire installed by the dealer. a police report was filed. the failure and current mileages were 105,000.

While driving on the highway at 70 mph my husband noticed our 1999 ford explorer not driving right. he pulled onto a side road to take the scenic route home. he was going 50 mph, with our 3 year old in the car, and the sidewall blew completely off the tire. the entire sidewall separated from the tread and bead. thank goodness it was the back passenger tire that blew otherwise the outcome would have been different. as it was nobody was hurt. he could barely control the suv as it was. the tire has only barely 6000 miles on it. when we called the store where it was purchased they said even though we paid for the road hazard we still had to pay for a new tire. *tr

Saturday, nov , 3:00 pm. driver (17), was making a left turn at xxxxxx & xxxxxxxxxx (xxxxxxxxx) and suddenly lost control of 1999 ford explorer which jumped curb and slammed into a tree. no other vehicles involved. apparent cause: right rear tire -- goodyear wrangler ht -- seemed to have blown to pieces. vehicle had traveled approximately 2 miles prior to incident ( from cold start, so no significant pre-incident travel time). driver had just stopped at a red light and had traveled less than 1/5 of a mile (est) while making normal left turn in route home. police at scene issued no citation. driver taken to e.r. and released subsequently. one witness said tire was on fire. both air bags deployed upon impact with tree. prior to accident, tires appeared in good shape, left- rear companion tire is same age, model and mileage as right-rear. left rear is available for insurance adjuster inspection. vehicle is at collision clinic inc., on xxxxxx xxxx in missouri city, texas (small sub-division adjacent to xxxxx xxxx). allstate insurance company. tire was completely withered after incident. no precursor problems whatever with either tires or vehicle (other than earlier recall with which we complied and received new tires). *la , gem

Dealer was to replace all firestone tires on vehicle under ford motor company recall. they replaced only four (4) tires, they did not replace spare tire, when asked about this they said recall program was over. if there is a safety defect in these tires it would appear this is an accident just waiting to happen! have checked other vehicles in parking lots and have found goodyear or michelin tires mounted but some spare tires were still firestone! should ford motor company be asked to check recall vehicles to see if tires have been changed or is it really too late? mr

For the second time in just a couple of weeks ive had another one of my firestone (steeltex radials r4s) tires have a blowout and this time it included a complete tread separation. the tire location was the left rear inner tire... temp outside was approx. 105 or greater (arizona). my highway speed was around 65mph. with less than 14000 miles on the tires, i should not be having this type of problem. interesting to find out my tires are from the decatur plant, yet firestone refuses to admit there is a defect or theyre not designed to handle the heat in this area. since this was my first trip since my last blowout, i have no confidence any of the remaining tires will last. im replacing them all. neither ford nor firestone will meet me half way on the cost.*ak (dot number: vd1l1xd059 tiresize: lt22575r16)

I wanted to let someone know that i agree with bridgestone, that it is not the complete fault of their tires and the fault must also be with the explorer itself. i have had numerous problems with the tires and even went as far as to proceed with the lemon law, which you can look up in florida to see the specifics. of course ford blamed the tires which they replaced with michelin's. i still have the same shaking and vibration problems i had with the firestone tires. ford said that the explorer's ride that way and tried to tell me that what i was feeling was normal. to me, this is a total lack of safety concern for me or any other person that purchases their product. what if my tires had blown out on the highway before they were replaced after complaining to them for months? they put my life in jeopardy. on top of that, i had my oil changed the other day and found that they never replaced the spare, which turned out to be a recalled tire, so i can assume that the other 4 were recalled also. it was replaced by the dealer who performed the oil change. i honestly do not feel safe driving this vehicle even with different tires because it still shakes and vibrates pretty bad at highway speeds and i just had the tires rotated, balanced and aligned. i honestly feel that there is something mechanically wrong with the vehicle. i also feel that i should have won with the lemon law, and that something should be done for having jeopardized my life for months before they changed out the tires and also because it still has the same problems. of course, all the news about the recalled tires came after i had completed the lemon law action against ford. i feel that ford was grossly negligent with regards to my personal safety and if there is going to be something done on that level, i would like to be involved. nothing has happened yet, but i do not feel safe in the vehicle and it does feel like the tires are going to come off when i am on the highway (tiresize: p235/75r15)

We have had a hood latch recall, cruise control recall, questions about a tire recall (firestone), power steering fluid leak, cv boot rip, wipers turning on with the turn signal, 1 engine replaced due to 0 psi oil at idle (did they really replace it or just say they did?) several independent re-evaluations after the new engine had even more noises, fuel injectors replaced, a mysterious clunking sound on the right side during left turns, ~5000mi after 1st engine replacement another ford repair center is now saying that the engine has 0psi at and we need another engine. we feel like this 99 explorer (with currently <35,000mi)is a lemon and we are tired of recalls, repairs, waiting for engines. we want a dependable car! we have taken immaculate care of the car, have had professionals do the work on it (usually ford dealerships) and yet we are afraid that the warrentee will run out and we will have an expensive problem or, worse, the car will fail and someone will get hurt! does this car qualify as a lemon. if not what does? if so, what are our options? p.s. all of the mentioned problems are documented by ford dealership records that are in our possession.

The front tire blew out causing me to lose control, then both rear tires blew. this seems pretty extreme for tires that had very little tread wear to out and not perform as they should. even with a trailer attached, the explorer rolled over and was uncontrollable. the explorer was equipped with a ford hitch and the trailer towing package. the weight of the trailer was under the weight specified by ford, 4990 lbs. this accident should not of happened.*ak (tiresize: p255r75x16)( dot number: tire size: p255r75x16 )

I understand that these tires were not made at the decauter plant, howerer, the tires are splitting and seperating at the letters and just above the letters they are cracking. the local dealer was the one that brought this to my attention. i tried to contact the manufactor but the advised me that they could not help me because the tires are not on the recall. my wife drives this truck 100 miles round trip daily to work and i am concerned for her safety. please help us for we do not have the money to purchase new tires and feel that we shouldn't have to. thanks robert edwards. *ak (dot number: e4 02 7477 tiresize: p235-75r15)

On monday oct 16, 2000 i was driving home from work on the freeway when the right rear tire blew out. i was in the far left lane traveling approximately 56 mph. when i heard the tire blow i immediately took my foot off the accelerator pedal and allowed the vehicle to coast to about 30 mph. then i proceeded to use the brakes and change lanes to the right so i could get onto the shoulder and put the spare tire on the vehicle. i am suprised i didn't damage the rim by driving on it. fortunatley no one was injured and no accident resulted from this incident. the next morning i drove by a firestone dealer to complain but they were closed so i went to bob turner's ford country and had them replace all the tires on the vehicle. when i called firestone on tuesday the 17th, i was told that i either had a flat tire or a low tire and that is what caused the blow out. i know that is not true because i check the air pressure in my tires every sunday because i travel approximately 40 miles a day on the freeway. and the tire shows no signs of a puncture wound. the tire blew out on the sidewall and there is no damge to any part of the tread area or surface area that would be in contact with the road. it is just my opinion, but i believe this was a total tire failure and that firestone should reimburse me for the cost of replacing the tires. it is my understanding that these tires are not currently on the recall list, but i think they need to be included in the investigation and recalled before more people are injured or killed. also, in an earlier part of this form you asked for the dot code. it is very hard to read on the tire, but i believe that what i entered is correct. if you have any questions please feel free to contact me at the numbers or e-mail address listed above in this form. thank you. al petrova (dot number: vncu tiresize: p255/70r16)

When i inspected my tires in response to the firestone issue, i found that all four tires plus the spare were cracked at the intersection of the sidewall and the tread...all the way around the tire. firestone replaced these tires with the same make for no cost under the warranty. so far, no problem with the new tires, which were installed on october 13, 2000.  My ford has the wilderness at p255/70r16 tires on it. after downloading your database - i am afraid to drive my vehicle. i have two small children and after reading your database, i counted at least 100 incidents on that report involving the p255/70r16 tires. are they going to be put on the advisory page? i just bought this truck (used) i thought it was my dream truck and i can not even drive it. i can't afford new tires now - even prorated. is their any avenue for me? the dot # starts with a 'w2' same as the p235/70r16 advisory, does that help me out any? will their be an update?

Had the original vdhl recalled tires replaced and now the new tires are already starting to vibrate/wobble at speeds greater then 40 mph. i am really concerned about these tires as the old set that i had that were recalled were doing the same thing before i had them replaced. the new ones now with about 1500 miles on then are starting to do the same thing. i had the vehical inspected and no problems such as balancing or alignment was needed as well as no other problems with the car.  Tire broke in belt while driving on a gravel road. this is the ninth failure of these tires and far exceeds any failure rate i 've ever had in similar drinving conditions. this is two of five tires that have gone flat while driving. the suspension is smooth enough to allow driving on a nearly flat tire and ti think this is why the sma;ller tires are failing as well. these products are unsafe and certainly are not all terrain but awfully tender instead. *ak( dot number: w2cuipx458 tire size: p255r/7016 )

The side-walls of the original tires are splitting. you can see past the rubber and into the tire itself. have spoken to service tech's and they advise this is not a good thing. i have replaced these tires, but still have the original tires. ford, nor firestone, will do anything about the splitting of the tire and i am unable to get my money back that i have paid out. i was not expecting to replace these tires for at least another two years. i travel alot in this vehicle, with my 20 month old daughter, and i was not going to wait to become a statistic before replacing these tires. can anyone help to get these tires put on firestones recall?( dot number: w2hl tire size: 235/75r15 )

I reported having problems with my tires to pulliam ford and firestone dealers. i recieved a cold shoulder and a general lack of concern for my situation or my wellfare. two days later i nearly killed myself on the way to work when my left right tire exploded and came of the rim for no apparent reason. i had my complaint formally documented my ford motor company's headquaters on 9/12/2000, the blowout occured two days later. i had been experiencing problems sustaining air pressure in all four of my tires weeks previous. i also had my tire inspected for the problem by ford who told me i had know problem. the tire that blew was not of the type listed on the recall meaning the dot # did not start with vd. i have reported my experience( blowout) to pulliam ford this morning and recieved once again lack-luster service and a direct refusal to assist me in providing a safe vehicle for mine and my family's disposal. i can only imagine the consequences had i been going faster than 50 miles per hour, up to this point i just wanted a safe vehicle but, now i feel as if well being has been put at risk when it could have been avoided with little cost by these companies in which i invested my faith. please help!( dot number: )

Although my tires had not yet failed, i was compelled to replace them with goodyear wrangler rt/s tires. this was done at my own expense. the firestone dealer that i went to for the inspection did not even look closely at them. he simply glanced at one tire and said those are 16 inch tires and they haven't been recalled. they're fine. they don't look fine to me. there are at least 34 incidents of my size tire on your complaints spreadsheet. there could be as many as 89 of them. that is enough for these tires to be added to your consumer advisory list. it's your responsibilty to protect us from this kind of design flaw. please prevent further deaths by recommending the recall of every tire that's on the complaint list. best regards, lyle geurin. *ak( dot number: vncu1px438 tire size: p255/70r16 )

Monday, july 31, 2000, i was driving home from the grocery store and my driver side rear tire blew out, the front passenger side tire i was having air capacity problems with for 2 weeks. ford road side assistance came and changed my tire and put my original spare on the driver's side. i went to firestone and they replaced the tire with a new firestone wilderness at on the driver's side rear and patched the front passenger tire. with the pending firestone wilderness at tire recall on ford explorers, i feel fortunate that i was not travelling at an excessive speed on central expressway. i would like the potential danger noted, i had called my car dealership westway ford and they had directed me to firestone who carries the warranty on the tires. they were very helpful, yet firestone replaced the original tire with the same potentially dangerous tire. your response would be greatly appreciated. thank you, lara bullock( dot number: tire size: at )

I am wondering if any other tires are being added to the firestone/ford recall. my reasons for inquiry are very serious in nature. on may 05, 2000, while looking out the rear view mirror of my ford mustang, i watched my wife roll our 1999 ford explorer sport on the freeway at about 55 miles per hour. after my wife hit an object in the roadway, she began skidding perpendicular to the flow of traffic. while skidding, both driver's side tires blew out and initiated several complete rolls. the vehicle was totaled and i expected my wife would be dead. luckily, she was wearing her seatbelt and did not sustain any serious physical injury. the tires on our explorer were p235/70r 15 owl a/t. 21 century in our insurance and the policy # is ap1295570. i want to know if these tires might also be faulty. please respond at your earliest convienence.( dot number: tire size: p235/70r15 )

This relates to the firestone tire recall. before the firestone tire recall was announced, i had my mother-in-law take her exployer in to the local dealer in jefferson city, missouri because i noticed excessive wear on her front tires. the tread on the inner surfaces was worn completely down and you could notice a distinctive sound as you drove it down the highway, i call it the helicopter sound. the response she received was that all exployers do this and there was nothing that they could do about it. after the recall was anounced, she took it back to the dealer and in her words the men in suits had her tires replacesd on the spot. that took care of the tire probem for now, but i believe that if all exployers tend to wear tires as the dealer indicated to her, then it could be a contributary cause of the premature tire failures that have been experience on ford exployers.

While driving on the freeway at 70 mph the rear tire began to shake and the car began to swerve. i slowed down to find that the tire had shred all the way around. i drove it to the side were i contacted ford roadside assistance @ 3:00 am. i took it into the nearest firestone to get a replacement. he could not find a reason why this had happened no cuts in the tire just seperation. according to my warranty i should have gotten a free replacement because of a defect the manager refused because he assumed the tire was not properly inflated i paid for a new tire.( dot number: tire size: 23575r15 )

This report is for a previously owned explorer, not the one identified by vin and purchase date here. this car was purchased in 1995 and had 2 tires delaminate on two seperate occasions. on both occasions i was travelling on i-15 at about 70 to 75 mph, both were on hot days. one was a right rear tire, the other was a left front tire. i have had previous troubles with firestone tires shreading on a 1989 bronco ii. the bronco ii incident was taken to the firestone dealer. the exployer incident was reported to the ford dealer. i have repeatedly requested of the ford dealer that i get tires other than firestone, not only because of the problems i have had, but because they have refused to stand behind there warranties. i have been told that would cost me several hundred dollars more. when i reported the delaminations to the ford dealer, i was told that these tires were designed for maximum mileage with minimum wear. this, i was told, required use of harder rubber, which was more difficult to bond to the rest of the tire. they said that the reason the tire delaminated is that is was a superior wearing tire and that i should be pleased that i got 50000 miles our of them. i, of course, strongly disagreed, and feel that a tire that delaminates with no outward signs of wear is extra dangerous. i now have another exployer, the one identified in this report, that has firestone wilderness at tires. i also have an individual that works with me that has an explorer that has had 2 tires delaminate. now that i find how wide spread this problem is and how long they've known about it, i don't understand why immediate action is not taken to replace these tires. i have already had two terifying experiences and i do not want to be in jeopardy any longer. the ford dealer to which i have referred is the same as listing in this form as the present dealer.( dot number: tire size: unknown )

We had come to a complete stop in traffic when we heard what sounded like a gunshot. the right rear tire quickly went flat and i assumed from the sound that we had experienced a blowout. the tire was able to be repaired (patched). i realize that the recently announced recall of firestone tires is currently limited to 15 tires, however, this is the 3rd flat tire we have had in less than a year (2 were punctures which i realize doesn't enter in to the problem). i will never feel comfortable with these tires or safe. we were just lucky that we weren't traveling at a high speed when this tire blew. we have a small son and this vehicle is our primary transportation. i believe the tire recall should be expanded to include the 16 wilderness at tires as well.*ak( dot number: w2cu1px408 tire size: p255/70r16 )

On interstate 76 in northeastern colorado, march 2000, air temperature 50 degrees, vehicle speed 75 mph, tire pressure 30 psi, vehicle load 2 adults and luggage, miles on vehicle and tires approx. 3500, first indication of trouble was increasing noise sounded like a helicopter was overhead and getting closer, then noticed control of vehicle was affected and realized a tire was going, decreased speed as rapidly as possible and was able to maintain control and get vehicle stopped, right rear tire was totally destroyed however tread seemed to be intact however was wrapped around rim and disc brake assembly, rim was on ground but did not damage rim or brake. firestone would not cover replacement expense because dealer called it a run-flat and said he was unable to determine what caused the failure. with recent publicity and pictures in news media, i am very sure we had a tread separation, not a blow out or road damage. i feel very strongly that the 16 inch tires should also be included in the current recall.( dot number: tire size: p255/70r16 )

On june 17, 1999 my wife, infant daughter and i were returning from vacation in our 1999 ford explorer entering atlanta, ga traveling west on i-20 merging into the i-85 / i-75 connector when the right rear tire blew out. the vehicle was extremely difficult to handle. due to heavy traffic conditions and loss of control i had to bring the vehicle to a halt on the inside hov lane. i did not hit any debris on the road and it was clearly visible that the side wall of the tire had blown out. the traffic conditions were so hazardous that it took an atlanta, fulton county police officer with siren, flashing lights and horn to move my vehicle to the other side of the highway to get us clear of oncoming traffic. i had the vehicle towed to a goodyear dealership and the manager confirmed that the tire had blown out from the inside. i took the tire to the firestone dealer and the manager insisted that we had hit something in the road. i made it clear that we had not hit anything in the road and that i would take the matter up with the ford motor company and my attorney. with that statement the manager agreed to replace the tire free of charge. i became suspicious with that quick turn around and contacted ford motor company and they denied any knowledge of issues with firestone tires. i am incensed that firestone and ford knowingly jeopardized my family by replacing this defective tire with another firestone wilderness tire. i have again contacted ford motor company after the recent press release about firestone's issues with wilderness tires on ford explorers and once again they told me they could do nothing until they recalled the tires. i'm not sure which way to turn on this issue and i am seeking your advice on how to get this issue addressed. i do not want these tires on my explorer. i now have no reason to trust firestone or the ford motor company in this matter. your guidance and counsel will be greatly appreciated. *ak( dot number: tire size: p255/70r16 )

Tire blew when turning to parallel park - replaced with same. since about 10,000 miles, the other 3 oe tires on vehicle have shown peeling rubber on the sidewalls to where the white inner belts are showing through in small areas. i had thought this was normal wear and tear in the south (i recently moved here from michigan) until i started hearing and reading in the last few days about the inherent problems with these particular tires. i am now extremely concerned about the potential danger of driving my explorer with these tires. i would like to know what can be done to remedy the situation. thanks. *ak( dot number: tire size: p235/75/r1 )

I just heard on the radio of a potential problem. about six weeks ago i had a blowout on the freeway which resulted in a damaged rim and a replacement of a tire. at the time i asked repairman if it could be a defect and he wasn't sure. i asked how long the tires should last, he said 60k miles. i only have 40k miles, with still an okay tread. at the time i figured it was just an anomaly. *ak( dot number: )

I do have the wilderness at tires designated with the number p235/75r15. however, i have a dot plant code of w2, not vd. in firestone's voluntary recall, they are recalling the wilderness at tires with the vd dot code only. in your customer advisory document, you are giving a warning to a wilderness at tires with a w2 dot, only the size on this one on your document is p235/7016. so it looks like technically, my tires, the wilderness at p235/75r15 with at dot of w2 do not qualify for anything. but in everyday reasoning, i don't see why my tires are any less dangerous and should not be omitted on your document. i do contain a set of tires that came from a plant designated w2 which already has a problematic set of wilderness at tires. i do contain a wilderness tire size of a wilderness at that has been designated 'unsafe'. after doing some reading and watching shows like dateline on my own, i don't know how you can go to one plant and say 'these set of tires at this size are bad but these set of tires with the same size as the tires that are bad at another plant are alright'. firestone seems to have a quality problem that affects its tires, period. i read an article written by a guy who has studied the firestone tires and he said the chemicals used in producing the tires don't bond well. these chemicals will be the same in each tire no matter what you look at. firestone chose to get rid of the steel belt around their tires which makes tires more sturdy. and who is to say that the plant designated w2 does not have a quality problem with all the tires coming out of the plant, at least in the troubled wilderness at tire division? if you have some type of quality process for one size of the wilderness at that isn't good, don't you think that same process could have been applied to the same wilderness at tires of a different size?*ak

We currently reside in puerto rico. in the summer of 2000, we heard news reports of tread separation problems potentially related to a manufacturer's defect and warm climate. we determined that all of our tires on our 99 explorer were wilderness tires. only 1 was being recalled because of the place of mfg. we were putting off replacing the tire until the matter was investigated further. on july 10, 2000 while driving with my son to a football game we stopped for a soda and discovered one tire separating. because we already had 36,000 mi. on the car and because of additional safety concerns, we immediately replaced all four tires at the place ford recommended. they reimbursed us for the 1 tire recalled. now the other three have been recalled but they refuse to reimburse us (even though we have the original receipt) because it was prior to aug. 1, 2000. *ak( dot number: )

We are concerned about our explorer with the firestome tires (wilderness) pulling our 25 ft camper. we heard the recall was going to start in the southern states. we believe we are more at risk for tire failure due to extra strain of pulling rv. we are afraid to use rv until tires on explorer are replaced.*ak

Tread separation on two rear tires; irregular tread wear on steer axle tires; steering very irratic; vehicle pulls to right; conversation with tire dealer, dealer stated if tires deemed damaged would be prorated with replacement firestone or bridgestone tires. statement from corporation said all tires would be replaced if customer dissatisfied, this is contradictory to the statement from the dealer. with current knowledge made it necessary to purchase new tires (another manufacturer) due to contradictory info from firestone and dealer. we did not feel comfortable with their replacement products. after inspection of tires by service department of local dealer, we were advised to replace tires immediately to avoid accident. *ak( dot number: unknown tire size: l235r75/15 )

I have been an owner of the ford explorer sport for approximately 13 months with the original firestone wilderness at tires. on 19 jun 00, i was driving home from work which is approximately 55 miles and driving 55 mph when i heard a pop and realized that my right rear tire had blown out. fortunately i was able to manage the vehicle out of traffic and on the shoulder of the road. when i pulled over, it was apparent that i did in fact have a blow out and not just merely had run over something. the portion of the tire that was damaged was the sidewalls has several tears from the rim to the tread. i managed to get the tire changed safely and immediately went to the sears automotive department in my home town and purchased another firestone wilderness at tire at $114.12 to ensure that i had a spare in case of another problem with these tires. i would like to have these tires replaced as the many thousands of other consumers, however firestone will not be the tire of choice. sincerely, ms. jamie m. martin. *ak( dot number: tire size: p235/70r15 )
