Accelerator pedal bracket falls right off of firewall which then the vehicle looses all acceleration capabilities. only three spot welds hold this bracket onto the firewall. the spot welds seem insufficient to hold the bracket onto the firewall. some welder experts state on auto forums that the spot welds are non-conforming regarding the required diameter of a good weld.

We have had a hood latch recall, cruise control recall, questions about a tire recall (firestone), power steering fluid leak, cv boot rip, wipers turning on with the turn signal, 1 engine replaced due to 0 psi oil at idle (did they really replace it or just say they did?) several independent re-evaluations after the new engine had even more noises, fuel injectors replaced, a mysterious clunking sound on the right side during left turns, ~5000mi after 1st engine replacement another ford repair center is now saying that the engine has 0psi at and we need another engine. we feel like this 99 explorer (with currently <35,000mi)is a lemon and we are tired of recalls, repairs, waiting for engines. we want a dependable car! we have taken immaculate care of the car, have had professionals do the work on it (usually ford dealerships) and yet we are afraid that the warrentee will run out and we will have an expensive problem or, worse, the car will fail and someone will get hurt! does this car qualify as a lemon. if not what does? if so, what are our options? p.s. all of the mentioned problems are documented by ford dealership records that are in our possession.

I purchased this 99 explorer in february and already it has been in the shop several times for different defects including on the first day i bought the truck and took in home with 6 miles on it the transmission began slipping and eventually went out on the truck. since it was a saturday that this happened the truck sat till monday when the dealer had it towed back (i did notice transmission fluid on the ground).the dealer said this problem was due to a connector on the transmission fluid line not being sealed or tightened. i asked if there was damage to the transmission which they said it wouldn't be but this leads me to my next problem. the truck does not accelerate through the gears properly but ford says there is nothing wrong with after looking at it again. next it was in for the speed control cable which they sent a letter to me for but did not have the cable in stock and were suppose to disable the speed control until one came in. they did not disable it which was very hazardous safety wise. next the truck has been in because one of the speakers was blown and in fact after getting that one replaced the others sound just as bad as the blown one and the radio has never been turned past halfway. my latest problem is that my windshield wipers will come on sporactically at any time and stay on for about 30 seconds and i cannot turn them off seeing as i didn't turn them on. this happens about every 45 minutes to an hour. i have not been to the dealer about this because one i am very unhappy about the vehicle and am tired of finding another means for transportation while they fix my truck. i even asked for another truck but was told that there shouldn't be moe problems with the truck, this was after the transmission went on the first day i bought it. *ak

I have a 99 ford explorer 4wd, eddie bauer edition. from time to time, the throttle will stick , especially when its cold. i can't replicate the stick reliably. when it sticks, i have to press extra hard on the throttle, resulted burst acceleration that could cause potential accident with the vehicle in front of me. i have to be extra careful when that happen when driving into my garage, which i always afraid that my explorer would run into the wall. contacted ford dealer to see if there's any recall, they said they wanted $99 for the diagnostic but no guarantee. ford said they had similar case, but it was on other models and not willing to go further unless i pay the $99.95 diagnostic fee. like i mentioned before, i can't replicate the sticking throttle reliably, therefore the $99 diagnostic fee will go to waste because the ford dealer would sure tell me there's no problem with throttle. please let me/us (ford explorer driver) know if you have similar complaints filed in your database and what actions you are taking to resolve this issue. thank you. *jb

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL - CABLES
11/15/20051
Re: 1999 ford explorer in november of 2005, my wife and i were driving to kingsville, texas one saturday evening to attend a charity function. upon our exiting from the highway, we proceeded down two city blocks. after which, the accelerator raced unexpectedly. i managed to hold down the brake at a traffic signal stop, all the while the engine was revving at about 4,000 rpms. i immediately pulled the car over and turned off the engine. i thought that the floor mat must have gotten caught on the gas pedal and i removed the floor mat completely. upon my restarting the engine, it immediately revved up to 4,000 rpms again. thankfully the vehicle was in the parked position. i quickly turned off the engine because i knew it was dangerous to try to operate the vehicle. i phoned aaa auto club and had them send a wrecker to tow the vehicle. i had the vehicle towed to the local ford dealership, eddie yaklin in kingsville, texas. on the following monday, i phoned the dealer and was told that the throttle cable had frayed leaving it in the open position. please feel free to call the local dealership to get the technical details of the problem. i am writing this letter for two reasons: (1)to notify you of a mechanical failure that could result in the injury and/or death of ford customers and their neighbors. i am also submitting a copy of this letter to the national transportation safety board. i have performed some research and it appears that ford has had throttle problems in the past. see attached copies of my research material. (2)to request reimbursement for the cost of correcting the design and/or mechanical defect of the throttle cable. i have enclosed a copy of the invoice depicting the service costs i incurred correcting the defective throttle cable. *nm
