| On september 6, 2005, odi received a petition requesting that the agency investigate allegations of engine spark plug ejection in certain model year 1997 through 2004 ford vehicles with triton v-8 and v-10 engines.odi received a total of 474 non-duplicative complaints on the subject vehicles where the complainant, or the dealer repairing the vehicle, reported that a spark plug detached from the cylinder and/or ejected from the engine.as of december 8, 2005, odi is not aware of any allegations where the alleged defect resulted in a loss of vehicle control, a crash, an injury, or a fatality in any of the 10,319,810 subject vehicles.in addition, odi is aware of only two incidents where the vehicle stalled without restart.information contained in the odi consumer complaints and obtained from 72 telephone interviews with complainants showed the following:(1) 99% of the complaints were on my 1997 to 2002 subject vehicles.(2) most the complainants reported hearing a loud pop while driving or upon starting up the vehicle followed by a loud, repetitive clicking or popping sound.(3) many of the complainants reported that the popping sound was accompanied by some loss of vehicle power; however, in 99% of the incidents reported, the vehicle did not stall.in the very few incidents where the vehicle did stall, most vehicles could be restarted.(4) only a small percentage of the complainants cited that they smelled gas or a slight burning smell when the incident occurred.(5) in all but a very few incidents, vehicle damage was limited to the engine.in one incident, the complaint reported that the fuel rail was damaged and replaced after one of the spark plugs ejected from the engine; however, the complainant reported that the damage did not result in any type of fuel leak or fire.in another incident, the only incident where a fire was alleged, the complainant reported that no fluid leak was observed, but that a fire resulted after the spark plug had ejected from the engine and he had restarted the vehicle and driven to another location.none of the complainants reported any damage to the vehicle hood.(6) only two complainants reported that they observed what appeared to be some drops of fuel coming from the cylinder where the spark plug had failed or on the spark plug itself; however, each of these complainants reported that there was no smoke or flames as a result of his incident.as the petitioner noted, and odi | ||||||

| Sparkplug super-heated and melted longitudinally destroying the outermost sparkplug threads (7 through the seating surface of the spark plug). inner most threads, the ones deepest into the head were not damaged. a second plug was installed along with a new spark plug wire and within 20 miles, the sparkplug was again melted beyond salvage and the new wire burned up. due to the destruction of the sparkplug, it was able to be removed without tools as there were no threads remaining in the cylinder head. fortunately the fire damage (likely from the spark of the plug) was limited only to damaging the sparkplug and the spark plug wire labled #3. | |||

| Over the past three to four months my 2000 ford explorer (6 cylinder w/ sohc engine) has developed a problem with the engine. the problem occurs on an intermittent basis. at times the engine will not start. when it does start it will not idle and dies unless the rpm's are manually held at a high enough level to allow the engine to run. when braking at any speed the engine will die when the automatic transmission shifts from a higher gear to a lower gear allowing the rpm's to fall between shifts. this requires shifting the car into neutral to re-start with a loss of all power steering and braking functions. a first it seemed the problem only occurred after the car was parked outside during hot days. now the problem occurs at different times and different weather conditions. the car recently had the fuel system serviced (along with the 65k recommended service package) at a local ford dealer. the problem persists. i wrote to consumer reports magazine and they suggested i forward this information. *b | |||

| On 20 mar 2005 while driving my 2000 ford explorer the check engine light came on. i pulled to the side to check the problems, everything seemed normal except it was idling rough. i called the dealer the next day to bring it in. i brought it to the ford dealer on 21 mar 2005. i was told that afternoon, that it was the cylinder head gasket. i called the dealer on 22 mar to check and see when i could pick it up and was told that it would not be ready because they found the cylinder head had a crack. i called on 23 mar to check and was told both cylinder heads were cracked and there is a possibility that the engine may have to be replaced. i was also told that they were waiting for an adjuster from ford to make a determination to see if the engine needs to be replaced or just the cylinder heads. it is now the afternoon of 29 mar and i was told by the dealer that the cylinder heads are on back order and they do not know when my car will be ready. i called ford (800-392-3673) and basically was told sorry nothing we can do the cylinder heads are on national back order. if that is true, there is a great demand for ford 4 liter engine cylinder heads. iis that a result of a defect with the engine or the cylinder heads. has anyone looked into this? also, do not what can be done to get ford moving on my problem? | |||

| I previously owned a 1998 explorer that had the same problem i am having with my 2000 explorer. from talking with the ford dealer mechanic, this is a widespread problem that is occurring after 30,000 miles that is a potentially dangerous situation. the problem is upon startup of the vehicle, the engine will crank, and when the ignition key is released, the engine dies immediately. the only way to keep the engine running is to keep one foot on the gas pedal depressed. to drive the vehicle one foot must be on the gas and one on the brake to keep the engine from stalling. this is presenting a potentially dangerous situation and ford is quite aware of it, but doing nothing in the form of a recall or safety bulletin to consumers. fortunately my 1998 first failed under warranty, but my 2000 happened after my 36,000 mile warranty. the problem occurs intermittently but frequent at times, after driving several miles, it would correct itself. i think ford needs to address this problem and do any repairs at no cost to the owner. *ph *jb **dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis**766061 | |||

| We leased a 2000 ford explorer on 9-15-00 on 9-16-00 it shut off going down a hill no power steering or power brakes contacted the dealership they thought it was a fluke and wouldn't happen again. it has since happened 4 more times all going down hills. it has been in the shop 5 times but only worked on 2 of the 5 times because ford motor co. doesn't know what to fix. they also said it had to shut off on a mechanic to do anything . overall the had our vehicle 23 days , it didn't shut off. they installed a flight indicator on our vehicle and returned it to us and told us to push the button within 5 seconds when it shuts off. you can only do this with 2 people in the car. it shut off feb.2,01 i pushed the button because my husband was driving and called the dealership, they picked up the vehicle and returned it 3 hours later and said we got a good reading they should be able to fix the problem. ford motor co. asked for the reading and said it wasn't a good reading don't do anything . so we still have a vehicle that everyone know shut off 5 times, we can not do the lemon law because it has only been worked on 2 out 5 times andwe had a rental 23 days and we need 30 days.we have a family that drives in this car, we live on a hill and out business is on abigger hill.i am scared to death to drive this vehicle.we have talked to ford hotline and got a run around with them and we have email ford andgot a ran around from them. the dealership will take our vehicle back but we need to put the difference in our new payment of what is owed.all together it is 8500.00 i don't feel this is fair considering this is not my problem it is fords.no one wants to help us and the dealership told us to save our money ford has way more attorneys than we can afford to fight them. i hope we can get somewhere with your company. thank you. *ak | |||

| Engine makes throaty sound when both idling and accelerating. dealer first recommended that the engine be replaced--then stated there was no problem and the noise was normal. i feel this is a problem that will persist and become worse and may endanger me and/or others. the manufacturer should replace the engine as originally suggested by the dealer.*ak | |||

| For approximately two weeks prior to december 5th, 2004, the heat element in my 2000 ford explorer driver seat would become painfully hot under the left leg near the torso to the point where it needed to be manually turned off each time. it was turned off as it became painful, and we were concerned we would become burned and would the seat catch on fire. my other concern for this is someone, such as a diabetic, with neuropathy wouldn't feel the intensity of the heat and become burned. 2) approx 2 weeks after the initial event the seat light will come on but no heat is produced. why did it take 2 weeks for the element (assumed) to burn out? 3) the car is scheduled to go to an independant mechanic as i do not trust ford to do the right thing. the dealer is not concerned that my driver airbag light goes on and off at will for days or weeks at a time. they recalled the 98 and 99 models for a tensioner pulley problem and issued a service bulletin for the '00 but the dealer wants to charge $500 for the repair......most defects i took in for warranty repair remain unfixed, (mostly electrical in nature) including a rear wiper that rarely goes on, radio stations and clock display that occasionally can be seen and a rear passenger door handle that after 5 attempts (ford went against their engineer recommendations to do a recall) will unlock with power lock but the unsuspecting or in a hurry will just about rip a hand off to get it open.*ak | |||

| Vehicle has always had a pulsating in the brake pedal since about 7000 miles. this time the brake master cylinder failed. upon inspection by the dealer he stated that i needed to replace brakes, rotors, ( both of which have been replaced at least twice before ) master cylinder, serpentine belt and tensioner and have complete brake system flush. all in the span of 3 years. this vehicle has also had the ball joints replaced and control arms as well. multiple occurences of the same symptoms. *ak | |||

| Dt: the contact complained about an ongoing problems with the emission system. the vehicle has been seen by the service dealer five times for emission problems, and they have never been able to completely remedy the problem. after the vehicle was serviced the same emission problems recurred. the check engine light came on and fumes entered the vehicle. the manifold gasket, oxygen sensor, idle control sensor, and other emission parts have been replaced. currently, the check engine light was on, fumes were entering the vehicle, and the contact was planning to return the vehicle to the service dealer for additional repairs. *ak | |||

| 08-14-02 (39685 miles) - replaced idle air control valve - $215.87 03-14-03 (46676 miles) - replaced control arm and ball joints- $770.82 i feel that the above mentioned repairs that were made to my 3 year old vehicle are a result of poor craftsmanship and quality when the vehicle was made, and that these current problems are evidence of infant mortality. the ford motor company has refused to accept any financial responsibility and did nothing more than receive my complaint. *jb | |||
