On monday my future son-in-law was driving my ford explorer and experienced the cruise control refusing to disengage while traveling at 70 mph. he tried to disengage the cruise control by braking and by turning it off. neither worked. he tried to shift it into neutral only to have the engine rev to high rpm, so he put it back in gear and forced to car to stop using the brakes fighting the engine. probably ruining the brakes in the process. i recently had my vehicle serviced as relating to a recall concerning the speed control deactivation switch. the switch was not replaced after a visual inspection.

My 2000 ford explorer xlt caught on fire for no apparent reason. my daughter and i were at a friend's house, we were in the process of backing out of the drive when smoke started coming from under the hood. i pulled the car off to the side of the road and put it in park and turned off the engine, the smoke got much worse. my daughter and i got out of the explorer just as it was catching fire. we called 911, the car was a total loss. the whole incident is unbelievable, we are shocked. my insurance adjuster informed me that it wasn't uncommon and mentioned something about a recall on the cruise control. i bought my explorer in indiana, but have moved to tennessee. i never received a recall, i'm still waiting on my insurance company to get back with me. *tr

August 2007 i received a letter from ford motor co. notifying me of a defect in the speed control deactivation switch in my 2000 ford explorer. september 2007 i had the nearby dealer disconnect the switch per notice. as of today, april 16, 2008, the speed control has not been repaired in a reasonable time. each time we call the dealer, we get the same answer the part has not been received yet. i've driven 7 months without use of the speed control in my vehicle. i would really like to know when ford intends to get this part out to their dealers so that this problem can be fixed properly. this is ridiculous having to wait this long for a part that ford has known about for a while. *tr

In january 2008 i took my 2000 ford explorer to courtesy ford, in altoona, pa to have the recall service performed. they did not have the necessary parts, so they ordered them and disconnected my cruise control to make the car safe to drive. on february 26, i called and was told my part had arrived. when i took it in, they discovered that only one of two required parts had arrived, and they could not repair my cruise control. i left on a business trip the following day. i was to return on march 7, 2008 and my girlfriend and three daughters were driving to the airport to pick me up. about 40 or 50 miles into the trip she noticed the car was losing power because it was not pulling up a hill well and the engine began running roughly. she pulled over to the side of the road. at this point, the explorer had a little bit of smoke coming from under the hood. she turned the car off and waited a moment, then saw the smoke getting worse. she and my daughters got out of the car and she called 911 for help. other drivers stopped to assist, but while she was on the phone the explorer broke into flames, starting from under the driver's side. the explorer and my belongings were destroyed, but luckily everyone got out safely. my daughters said that they could see flaming liquid (melted plastic or brake fluid) dripping onto the ground under the car while it was burning. *tr

This is in regard to a recall # 05s28 by ford motor co. - speed control deactivation switch, risk of underhood fire (2000 ford explorer xlt ). on sep.19,2007 the dealer disconnected the switch and informed me that the new harness will be installed soon, when parts arrive. it's been over four months, the repair has not been completed and now the dealer is telling me that maybe in june 2008. my complaint is that more than reasonable period of time has passed for a simple repair like this. ford is not following through with the completion with the recall. the lack of speed control is very inconvenient for me during my frequent freeway trips. the dealer offered me reconnecting the switch if i signed the waiver of liability. i?m not going to sign such a waiver but i will reconnect the faulty switch and in case of fire i will take a legal action against ford for damages. i'm also sending a similar letter to the dealership and ford customer service. *tr

I received the original recall notice in august 2007. i contacted the local ford dealer and was told that the part required was on order with an anticipated arrival date of late october 2007. i then received a postcard telling me i could have a temporary fix of having my cruise control completely disabled. as of this date, i am now being told that the part may not be available until january 2008. i have a lengthy commute, i paid for and do use my cruise control feature. i don't think 6 months is temporary and would like my vehicle properly fixed in a reasonable time. six months is not reasonable for a safety recall. *tr

Critical defect in the throttle linkage/cruise controls 2000 explorer. in two incidents involving the same conditions: 1) truck , when cruise control engaged, suddenly accellerated to speeds in excess of 90 mph, on icy and snowy interstate (january 2003), between nashiville and cincinnati, ohio. 2) truck , when cruise control engaged, suddenly accellerated to exces of 90 mph, on dry interstate (71) between cincinnati, ohio and columbus ohio. in both occurrences, truck totally non-responsive to braking attempts, to the extent that drivers stood on the brakes to attempt disengagement of cruise control. all other attempts at turning off also ineffective (switches non-responsive as well). brakes have been substantially damaged. drivers both maintain that accelleration happened without warning and only disengagement of the transmission (neutral) ceased accelleration. the rpm of the engine continued to maintain 4,000+ rpm and only could the engine be disengaged when vehicle was steered into soft ground to be slowed. this problem is repetitive and extremely dangerous as is, but egregious when mixed with icy/snowy conditions. ford delaership non-responsive to greater issue; attempting to shif liability on drivers and expecting repairs to be shouldered by drivers/owners. drivers maintain good driving records and now believe this problem to be life-threatening. drivers have also noted multiple other consumers with same exact problem and are aware of recalls involving this same type of problem in other ford products.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL - ACCELERATOR PEDAL
12/01/2002411/28/2002
I read an ap article about the nhts investigating stuck throttles from 2002 and newer ford explorers. i have a 2000 xlt explorer, all wheel drive, automatic transmission and it has had this problem since i bought it used 3 years ago. i have had this happen about 4 or 5 times since purchase and have reported it to the dealer who says there is no info on this from ford and they do not know what to do. for me, the stuck throttle has only happened in reverse as i am backing up. the throttle will go to full throttle by itself causing the car to quickly accelerate. the only way to stop it is to firmly hit the brakes with all my might, shift the gear into park or shut off the car. my point in contacting you is to make you aware that this is a problem at least going back to 2000 with the ford explorer and to hopefully find a cure for this dangerous situation.

Cruise control stuck - dealer treating as recall per ford recall #99s09 dealing with sticking cruise control. cruise control would not release throttle (brakes or off switch for cruise control) - vehicle had to be put into neutral, stopped and then engine stopped. this is a potentially fatal design error. the cruise control servo needs to relinquish control of the vehicle throttle once brakes or off switch engaged. it seems to be a re-occurence of the previous problem or an extension of the previous problem. vehicle build date was 12/06/00, per dealer.*ak

Driver of 2000 ford explorer vin 1fmzu73e84za28126 was driving on i90 e in ma and set speed control. upon pressing set/accel button to increase by 1-2 mph, vehicle throttle position stuck in accelerating mode bringing the vehicle to approximately 85 mph before braking and downshifting was able to decelerate speed. only under excessive braking force on pedal was vehicle able to be brought to under 50 mph, at which time the vehicle transmission was put into park just to stop. driver then called 911 and had vehicle towed to local shop. i have been able to reproduce this issue in controlled conditions. the throttle is fixed in its speed control position (this can be set to maintain speed or fixed in accelerate mode). braking shuts off the speed control light but does not disengage the throttle. once vehicle is brought under control and stopped the throttle can be manually released by hand and it snaps back to idle position. investigation has revealed that this vehicle had been recalled by ford under 03s03 (nhtsa 03v280000) for a speed control cable replacement. it is apparent this this part failure has occurred again to this vehicle. further investigation will take place to determine whether the cable in the vehicle is original equipment or a replacement part. additionally, it is the replacement part we will request investigation why the replacement part failed as well. *nm

A recall was issued in august 2007 for the speed (cruise) control deactivation switch (recall 05s28). it is now april 2008 and i have not been contacted for the replacement part. ford stated in their letter that their commitment, together with ford and lincoln mercury dealers, is to provide you with the highest level of service and support. i think that after 8 months, a reasonable time has been exceeded. it has become frustrating and expensive having to wait this long for a simple fix. ford motor company has displayed a failure to provide me with the highest level of service and support. what has happened is, that ford motor co. has failed to produce enough parts to support this recall. they know how many vehicles were potentially covered with this recall and should have prepared to replace/service this part in a reasonable amount of time. meanwhile, i have been forced to be inconvenienced and absorb additional expense due to ford motor co.'s incompetence and short sighted. *tr

Reported same issue to the nhtsa on feb 1, 2005...on january 12, 2007, my husband was driving our explorer to work. he accidentally bumped the cruise control and the car began accelerating rapidly. he was able to put the car in neutral and pull to the side of the road without incident and turn the vehicle off, but he was unable to start it up again, the battery was drained. a friend of ours came and gave him a jump start, the car turned on but the engine was revving and he couldn't get it to stop. they car was towed to a local mechanic and they found that the cruise control cable was stuck internally which was causing the cruise control to stick and made the car accelerate on it's own. they disconnected the cable from the throttle body to prevent this from happening again. i contacted ford and spoke to a rep named frankie and filed yet another complaint, but they don't want to help us out at all. they want us to take the car to a dealer and pay for them to inspect the car. *nm

The vehicle would crank and then immediately die. in order to keep it running you would have to increase the rpms to above 1500. you would have to hold down the brake and accelerate at the same time to be able to drive. this happened twice. i took the vehicle to a local shop since ford claimed they did not know what the problem could be. after explaining the situation the mechanic informed me that he was 99% sure it was the electronic idle controller because he had replaced several of them on explorers which corrected the problem. this is a potential dangerous situation if you are not aware of how to over come the situation in a time of crisis. i believe that ford has a major problem here that needs to be investgated before someone is seriously injued or possible killed. the cost to repair was approximately $175.00, however i spent another $100.00 changing filters and cleaning injectors thinking it was a fuel problem.*ak

Idle speed control valve failures on ford explorers cause the vehicle to crank, start, then immediately shut off. the vehicle will not maintain idle. the only way to keep the engine running is to continue to apply throttle. this is potentially hazardous if performed while in drive or reverse, as unintended acceleration (i.e. audi 5000) can result. many explorer owners have experienced this problem. local ford dealer charges $200 to replace the valve.*ak

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL - LINKAGES
02/13/200398007211/16/1999

When traveling on the highway at 70 mph 4- wheel drive kicked in, causing transmission to downshift, resulting in sudden acceleration. consumer has contacted dealer. dealer has attempted to repair problem after each of the 4 incidents by replacing harness, computer, electronic controls, and transfer case. new problem has since developed--electrical malfunction when using auto door lock feature. *ak *ml
