I bought my 2002 ford explorer in 2005. at about 85000 miles i noticed the transmission started to slip and often jerks real hard when shifting into 3rd. i had the transmission fluid changed by an authorized ford dealer in my area and they told me there are no metal shavings in the fluid, however, they did tell me that the 2002 fords are well knows for having transmission problems and they see it all the time in this make model and year. i called ford and they told me there are no recalls on the transmission, however, reading all the problems on the internet about owners who have complained, i feel there should be a recall on this because it is a safety issue!
09/01/201070000
Air bag warning light came on,pulled plug apart under drivers ,seat sprayed cleaner on it put it back together, took care of that problem. gear shift lever sheared off. ford says you need to replace steering column. went online found a man in sweden that made a replacement part, ordered it ,put it on ,works great. (why couldn't ford supply one?) the transmission is starting to act up, you shift in to drive it hesitates and leaps forward, quite hard, same in reverse. ford should recall this before someone gets hurt.

I am so disgusted after reading all the same problems with the 2002 ford explorer. i too have the airbag problem, they told me it was the airbag pretentioner and it is $650.00, now my air bag will not deploy if i get into an accident. i have the extended deluxe warranty that wont cover it. i also have a problem with the rear temp and mode actuators that failed and binding again not covered under warranty that is $510.00 to repair. i truly think ford should recall these same problems.

Tl. the contact owns a ford explorer. the contact stated while driving 25 mph the air bag indicator light comes on. this indicator means the air bag may or may not deploy during a crash and can deploy without being involved in a crash. the contact has taken the vehicle to have the pretension set and clock spring replaced seven times. none of those repairs has remedied the issue with the air bag indicator. the contact stated this is a major safety issue because the air bag will not deploy if a crash occurs and it may deploy while driving. the failure mileage was 172,000. jo

I have a 2002 ford explorer. for the last 2 years the air bag light is coming on and off. finally i took it for inspection and it didn't pass because the light was on and is a safety issue concern. i contacted ford motor company and because there is no a recall they would not fix the problem, despide of all hundreds of complaints about the same issue. probably waiting till someone die...toyota is the best example of ignoring problems like this...

Issue is with the airbag warning lamp coming on and disabling the airbag system in a 2002 ford explorer. per the error code lfc 34 the issue is the passenger side seat pretensioner, though this also happens with the driver side. there is currently a tsb out article no 03-11-3. for my vehicle the replacement part# is 1l2z-78610e22-aac. this failure is current everything the vehicle is turned on. *tr

Have had to replace both rear wheel bearings on 2002 ford explorer limited, also had to replace both rear springs. lucky my wife has good hearing so she noticed the noise as soon as it started or else may have went far enough to loose wheel. had rear springs and wheel bearings replaced at a cost of approximately $1100.00 . after reading complaints and talking with other explorer owner i feel it should have been a recall for factory to fix. also have recurring problem with airbag warning light coming on. have to jiggle wires under passenger seat to make light go out. *tr

We have a 2002 ford explorer. the airbag warning light is on and stays on. it's been like this for a while now. i never thought much of it until i got online researching it and found that not only that it is a common problem, but a very dangerous situation. apparently the airbags will not even work. from what i found the problem has to do with a cable that connects the seatbelt locking mechanism to the srs system is to short also a possible problem with a clockspring. by doing something as little as moving the drivers seat all the way back can trigger the warning light because the cable is to short. i learned this mostly through people over the internet who took there vehicles to ford dealerships and was told that was the problem. i called ford to see if there was a recall on it or if they would fix it. no recall and won't pay to fix. ford knows about the problem and knows what the problem is. i read that ford sent a memo out to it's dealerships telling them about the problem had a memo number forgot to write it down. this vehicle is a family vehicle and that's the primary reason we bought it. i would think that this being such a serious safety issue that ford would fix no problem, but at the very lest somebody should be able to make them fix this. i don't know what are the parameters for a recall to be issued, but i do know that if this does not call for one then who or what is the nhtsa for. i guess it takes a lot of people getting hurt or dyeing for something to be done. *tr

2002 ford explorer airbag light has been on. i took it to the dealer and they said it needs a pretensioner repair kit installed for $650. i declined service. i looked on the internet and their are lots of complaints; in july 2001, ford issued a special service message announcing that some air bag clockspring devices may produce noise when the steering wheel is turned full left or right. ford was aware that some clocksprings may have been improperly installed. the improper installation may also cause an open circuit and the air bag warning light to illuminate. starting with vehicles produced in september 2001, ford adding length to the clockspring wire to reduce the likelihood of damage from improper installation. *tr

On my 2002 ford explorer suv i have had to replace 3 of the 4 wheel bearings and hub assemblies(approx $250 each), with the 4th not far behind. i have also had to replace the 4-wheel drive module(approx $400-$500). i have had problems with the rear window motors going bad and having to replace these too. the air conditioning unit has stopped working. the passenger air bag dummy light has come on for no reason. the seat belt warning chime often comes on and will not go off, even though you have buckled your seat belt. you have to slam the buckle into place for it to go off and sometimes this does not work either. the transmission is now making a lovely clunking sound when shifting from park to drive and when you try to put it back into park, it does not want to. you have to put it up to park as far as it will go then go back to neutral and then into park from there. we have replaced the emergency brake shoes on both sides because they were completely worn off even though we do not use the e-brakes. these problems are just piling up one after another. i went to an internet site that has complaints about vehicles and found that there are hundreds of others with the same problems on their 2002 ford explorers of all kinds (xl, eddie bauer, special edition, etc.). why hasn't ford done any recalls for these problems? does it require multiple injuries or even death for them to take responsibility??? *tr

On 12/23/07 my in-laws were involved in a rollover crash of a 2002 ford explorer. my wife and i witnessed the entire accident as we were following my in-laws home from church. a cardboard box was in the roadway, and my mother-in-law took action to miss the box. she steered around the box, but when she tried to correct the vehicle it got sideways and the front driver's side tire assembly broke away and the vehicle began to flip. the roof crushed about 15 inches, the airbags did not deploy and of course the front wheel had broken away. my father-in-law escaped with a few broken ribs, but my mother-in-law is in intensive care with several injuries. i know you have had several complaints about ford explorers, but isn't it time to do something about it before someone else gets seriously injured or even killed?*cn

On the ford explorers 2002-2003 there is a passenger restraint fault where the airbag light comes on indicating that the passenger restraint and or driver restraint srs system is at fault. this is concerning me simply because it appears to me that this could cause the air bag to deploy while i am driving. *tr

My husband and i own a 2002 ford explorer xlt. the problem is with the airbag. the airbag light has stayed lit and needed repairs on 2 occasions. the first time this occurred was a year ago. at that time, we took the car to a ford dealership and were told the safety harness needed to be replaced and this was covered under the warranty. the airbag light has recently come on again. again, we took the car to a ford dealership and this time are told that another harness needs to be replaced and a wire under the seat is not working and the repairs (which are not under warranty) will cost approximately $370. i complained to the service manager that i feel i should not have to pay for these repairs as this problem occurred previously while under warranty and their previous repair should hold some guarantee. i was told this is not the case and that i would have to pay for these repairs. i find this completely unacceptable. i have no choice but to have the repair done as a non-functioning airbag is a serious safety concern. i am notifying the nhtsa and the consumer product safety commission of this serious safety issue that seems to be a recurring problem with my 2002 ford explorer. *jb

My daughter and i were involved in an auto accident in my 2002 ford explorer when another vehicle pulled out in front of us. i was traveling approximately 60 mph prior to slamming on my brakes. the ems driver estimated impact at 40 mph. my vehicle sustained $6600+ in damages to the front end. neither the driver nor passenger side airbag deployed. the ems driver and the wrecker said given the damage to the front end of my vehicle the air bags should have deployed. the ems driver also said it was typical of a ford to have the air bags malfunction. i sustained neck and low back injuries including damage to 4 disc in my spine according to the mri report. my daughter sustained injuries to her right shoulder, radiological testing is scheduled for later this month to determine the cause of her pain and loss of motion. she has also suffered with low back pain. i asked the mechanic responsible for the repairs on my vehicle at the dealership where i bought the vehicle about the air bags and was not given much of an answer. he basically said the damage did not go far enough into the engine area for the sensors to pick up the crash. given the damage to my front end and the need for replacement of multiple parts under the hood of my car and the injuries sustained i did not find this to be an acceptable answer.*ak

Currently own a 2002 explorer xlt with only 65k miles on it. the transmission is in need of a rebuild because is slip from time to time. the rear differential seals are leaking. the entire rear of the vehicle makes a humming noise so i suspect that a rear bearing is going bad. not to mention the 4wheel drive system has not worked since i bought it a little over a year ago. i've had intermittent issues with the air bag control module and also the backup alarm system. there is nothing but poor write-ups about this truck all over the internet. all the same problems i'm experiencing are problems many other drivers have also had. *tr

Recently the air bag warning light came on indicating a problem with the air bag system. also, the driver's seat belt would not retract when the driver exited the vehicle. the onboard computer indicated a code of 33 in memory. this indicated that the mechanism under both front seats was faulty. this problem would have caused the air bags to deploy unnecessarily or not deploy at all. the faulty seat belt retractor would not have prevented the driver from being thrown forward in the event of a collision. the warning light was intermittent at first and eventually stayed on so there was 55,000 miles recorded when i finally took the vehicle to our dealership. the owner's manual revealed that the supplemental restraint system (srs) is warranted for 5years/50,000 miles, so i realize that it was beyond the warranty period. however, this is my concern and complaint. the srs is probably the most important safety system in a vehicle and should not require these types of repairs just 6 months and 5,000 miles after the warranty expires. this system should last for the life of a vehicle unless the vehicle is involved in a collision. no one should have to be concerned that their srs system will fail after the warranty expires. i am not a mechanical engineer, but these parts must not have been manufactured properly. if they were, they would not have failed. as was stated above, this explorer was totally redesigned and sent to the dealer showrooms prior to the start of the 2002 model year. were things overlooked or not done properly just to rush this totally redesigned explorer to the dealer showrooms? if this was the case, should there be a recall for this model year in order to check this problem and ensure there are no safety concerns? the cost of these repairs is the minor issue of my complaint. the major issue is the safety of the driver and passengers. safety problems with a vehicle will cause serious repercussions for the company.

I bought a 2002 ford explorer eddie bauer in nov 2002. around oct 2005 my airbag light came on and i was due for an inspection. i took it into a ford dealership and they diagnosed it as a faulty seat belt...the seat belt worked fine, it even continued to lock-up during moderate braking. this cost me over $300. not a month went by and the airbag light came on again. i called the ford dealer, explained the problem and they told me that if it was determined it was a new problem i would be charged for that expense as well. i just can't believe that the light would come on after being fixed so soon. *jb

I have had to have my vehicle serviced for the airbag light staying on two times in the past. both times i was told it was a problem with the sensor for the airbag. the light came on again about one month ago and i took it to be serviced again last week. this time i was told it was an electrical wiring problem with my ford 2002 explorer that was causing the light to stay on. repair was a whopping 487.00. first, i am wondering why they didn't discover this problem on the prior two occasions and secondly, i have since discovered that a co-worker has also had to have her ford escape serviced 4 to 6 times for the same problem. the last time, she was told it was the sensor. her airbag light has since came on again. is this a systemic problem with the ford family of suvs?*jb

April 04 purchased 2002 ford explorer; just over 60,000 miles. no longer under warranty;sold as is. day after purchase, noticed knocking sound. returned to dealer. stated sound coming from the rear ac. repaired, did not hear after repair. approximately one week after purchase, noticed delay in gears engaging when going from park to drive , park to reverse also gear shift seemed to be loose. returned to dealer; told it was normal for this model. advised to keep in overdrive. late july 2004, noticed delay seem to be getting longer and jerking suddenly when finally engaged. while driving ,od light flashed on and off erratically. problem with od light intermittent. spouse took the car to the dealer; told that it wasn't under warranty, but we could make a service appointment. spouse took the vehicle to a shop had done business in the past. thought that it could need transmission fluid. checked fluid levels not deficient. problems continued; had them look at it a couple of months later. could not determine problem, advised to take to a transmission specialist if continued. problem persisted. seemed to get worse as the weather turned colder. late december 04, delays in engaging gears worsened; now making a loud clunking noise and lunges when engages, od light flashed erratically on a frequent basis and engine service light on and gear shift seemed to be coming out. january 2005, spouse took the vehicle to a transmission shop for diagnostic. transmission shot. rebuilt at a cost of $2900. found out that the vehicle had been repaired twice before, while under warranty for the same problems described. its obvious from the number of complaints that this is a known design defect. when a company sells defective products they should be held liable, especially when they do so knowingly. i stopped making payments on this junk and will notify the lender so that they and ford can fight it out. any owner who wishes may contact me at 703-998-5510. *jb

April 04, the airbag light came on flashing 3 times (3 blinks each time) and then would remain on. i took the car to the dealership here at freeport jet wash while the car was still under warranty and the warranty was finishing in june. when i took the car in they hooked it up to the computer then simply said we have resetted the control system in the car and if the light comes back on to bring it back!~~~ well, didn't last too long and it came back on but this is a couple weeks later and now they tell me my warranty is up but i told them they were aware of this before the warranty expired - long story short they changed it at no cost to me and said ford approved it to be fixed under warranty. but, that didn't seem to fix the problem, the airbag came on again a couple weeks later when they hooked it up again they said it was the same code and reset the control system in the car and told me to bring it back if it turns on...we all know what happened...it came back on...so they said they will change it again but this time not only did it take 4 months to hear back from them (only because i finally got tired of waiting and called them back) about the part but now they tell me that the part was not covered under warranty and the guy who did it shouldn't of (he is no longer with the dealership) and that i have to pay for the 3rd pretensioner to be put in my car after i have been trying to get this problem fixed a year and a half!

The side curtain airbag spontaneously deployed upon side door closure of a ford explorer. the vehicle was sitting after re-fueling. concurrent with and immediately prior to the deployment of the airbag, the door alarm system was chiming that a door was ajar, and after inspection by a mechanic it was determined that the security/door warning system module has failed. ford was sent the airbag module for inspection, and has yet to provide the results of the module inspection - after a period of more than 5 months. further problems persist with the electronic system. the door ajar alarm continues to sound at random intervals, the interior lights flicker on and off at random intervals, and the door locks repeatedly lock and unlock, all of which cause a distracting potential safety hazard while driving.
