I've been having an issue with my truck saying the door is ajar when it's not. while driving, the inside light will come on and lock/unlock the doors. i noticed it usually happens either while its raining or if it just finished raining. someone else i know who has the same vehicle (year/make/model) says the same thing happens to his vehicle. i'm wondering if you have heard of this before and if so, what steps do the manufactures take in deciding whether or not a vehicle needs to be recalled for a specific problem? any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated! *tr

This requested recall involves a 2002 ford explorer having an automatic transmission. during normal use, the shift lever breaks off at a cast rotating cylinder that transmits the torque from the gear shifter to push and pull the cable that puts the vehicle in park, drive, neutral, and reverse. the vehicle also had a tendency to jump out of park even before the part broke which caused the vehicle to roll back and almost pinned me between another vehicle when the vehicle rolled back and crashed into a vehicle parked downhill. this was a near miss accident. ford wants to charge $1500 to replace the entire steering column. we elected to junk the vehicle at this time until another solution can be found. vehicle still drives if you reach your hand and push/pull the transmission cable to shift the automatic transmission into gear. we can send the broke off section of the part if you will return it. on the internet, there are many reports of the same failure for years 2002 through 2005 ford explorers.

O/d light flashes for a few days then at around 25 mph the gear switches into neutral and runs very rough then the car is thrown forward. had a rebuilt transmission (we were told we were getting a brand new transmission and paid extra for it!) at 83k miles on oct 15, 2010 then feb 5, 2011 the same exact thing happens. the dealer cannot take the truck for another 5 days and refused to give me a loner car because it is not under the warrantee. please note: below i put in the first incident date, feb 2011 is the second incident date. in may of 2009 i was told my engine failed at about 76,000 miles. we did buy the extended warantee and we were covered. the ford dealership told us we were not covered. they had our truck for 3 weeks until the warentee people called the dealership and let them know it should be fixed. we also had a rental car or a loner car under the warentee. they refused to pay for a rental car and said they did not have a loaner car available. it took 4 more weeks (in total 7 weeks) to get the truck back and never paid for the rental.

Doors will not shut in the freezing cold weather. went out to the explorer tonight, got in, shut the door and proceeded to drive. i take the highway on ramp and my drivers door flew open. i stopped and tried to shut it and it just bounced open again and again because the latch was frozen. i finally get it to stay closed, drop my passenger off and then the passenger's door wouldn't close either. i drove all the way home holding my passenger's door closed. this truck is the absolute biggest piece of garbage i have ever driven in my life. if you are reading this complaint and have not yet purchased an explorer i strongly urge you to reconsider.

The side curtain airbag spontaneously deployed upon side door closure of a ford explorer. the vehicle was sitting after re-fueling. concurrent with and immediately prior to the deployment of the airbag, the door alarm system was chiming that a door was ajar, and after inspection by a mechanic it was determined that the security/door warning system module has failed. ford was sent the airbag module for inspection, and has yet to provide the results of the module inspection - after a period of more than 5 months. further problems persist with the electronic system. the door ajar alarm continues to sound at random intervals, the interior lights flicker on and off at random intervals, and the door locks repeatedly lock and unlock, all of which cause a distracting potential safety hazard while driving.

2002 ford explorer gear shift lever broke off while in drive. the lever is connected to a soft aluminum cylinder thru a u shaped end and a pin. the cylinder sheared at the base of the u as a result leaving no way to shift or get the key out after turning the motor off when i finally got stopped. repair cost is $1400 for a new stearing column plus labor. cannot buy small part that broke separately so explorer is not fixed. apicture of the problem can be seen at this url http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=188761&page=4

I have a 2002 ford explorer. there was no accident or any reason leading up to the failure. both of my rear door windows can not be moved down (or up). the switch mechanism does not work and needs to be replaced. this is an on-going problem that ford is aware of, that is costly to the consumer to repair and which could prove fatal should an accident occur and the occupants could not escape through the windows. i feel that a recall needs to be done about this problem as it seems to be a manufacturing/component defect of ford's.

My suv was parked in the driveway. i pushed the rear window release button to open the rear window and it exploded. glass fragments were found up to 12 feet in all directions. the noise it made was loud, like a shot gun had gone off. a professional auto mechanic told me that my rear window regulator must have malfunctioned. clearly this is a design flaw that ford should rectify and fear for the safety of anyone owning/using this vehicle. i'm currently searching for replacement parts. *tr

Severe cracks in back window housing. crack is so severe, consideration of window falling out is possible. information panel registers door ajar which consequently flashes internal lights, re-locks doors, sets warning bells to go off. often, door ajar does not register, but electric locks lock re-lock and lock many times with warning bells going off, interior lights flickering, many times in one instance. all activities happen intermittently, without cause or reason causing severe distraction to driver. theft alarm goes off after vehicle has been locked several hours; for no apparent reason. when unlocked and re-locked, continues to go off intermittently. i believe the rear window housing break is the root of all this activity. *tr

For the last couple of years during the coldest part of the winter, the doors on my vehicle refuse to latch. i have tried warming the car up longer, spraying the insides of the door with solution that is supposed to unfrozen windshields and locks (even though there never is ice or water seen) & nothing works. last year, it even refused to latch after letting my daughter off at school, even though it had latched when we left the house a mile earlier. when i turned the corner out of the school parking lot, the door flew open & almost took out a mailbox. i have called ford regarding this concern, & they say there is nothing they will do since it has 119,000 miles on it & the warranty is over, even though i believe it is a huge safety concern! as it is getting colder here, i am very worried about driving this vehicle, as my daughter and young grandson are using this vehicle at this time. i spoke with someone who actually works at the ford factory & he said this problem is due to the doors not being fitted correctly & in the winter the seal is. *tr

When attempting to shift from drive to park, the gear shift lever broke from the steering column, making it impossible to change gears. the engine remained running with it in drive. i turned the ignition off & it could not be restarted (ie, ignition/interlock system). the steering wheel wouldn't turn either. the entire steering column (not just small broken piece) had to be replaced (cost=$1372, $897 for parts). as of 7/2/08, 61 exactly the same incidents have been reported via complaints filed with nhtsa website. some vehicles complained about have experienced this part failure twice. these complaints have been filed under the components - steering: column, power train: automatic transmission, power train: automatic transmission: gear position indication (prndl), power train: automatic transmission: lever and linkage: column shift, steering: gear box (other than rack and pinion), steering: gear box: shaft sector, steering: wheel and handle bar, other or unknown this is an obvious design and/or mfg/material defect & it correlates (in many other complaints) with another defect - very difficult shifting of gear lever to or from ?park? & ?reverse?. 61 reported incidents of the parts failure are significant, but there are obviously far more than have been reported via nhtsa complaints. the defective gear shift part poses serious safety concerns. if the gear shift lever breaks while the vehicle is on a street or expressway (but stopped momentarily by necessity), the driver would be unable to change gears or push and/or steer it to safety, thereby creating a dangerous traffic situation with a high potential for bodily injury. nhtsa has more than adequate data to initiate a defect investigation & should immediately require ford to provide a full disclosure of the number of steering columns that it has sold as a result of this defect. i have the old steering column (and the broken piece) as well as several pictures of them. *tr

My 2002 explorer is also having the same problems which have been previously noted by other explorer owners. the whining when reaching 50-60 km/hr, which goes away when you take your foot off the gas, the slipping and shuddering of gears and sometimes passing gear never kicks in, the abs light comes on (usually after the truck has warmed up and it doesn't seem to happen when the weather is really cold), the abs is now starting to act up, wherein it randomly activates itself even while on dry pavement and the brakes feel mushy when this happens. now the locks are randomly not working. i would like to share one instance about the passing, shuddering, slipping was when i was traveling on the highway with my kids, i pulled out to pass, and when i stepped on it the truck shuddered so hard, that my daughter, who was coloring a mother' day card, actually scribbled when it shuddered, if that makes any sense. she was po'd at me asking me why did i do that and now her card was ruined. we have had the transmission in for service and were told nothing was wrong. we had the transmission fluid changed and the truck worked fine for about 2 weeks and then back to the same old problems. my husband and i are seriously considering trading this piece of crap vehicle off and we have decided that it will only be imports from now on. ford needs to wake up and start fixing all of these problems or they will be finding themselves bankrupt in no time. i was brought up as a kid in fords; 67 t-bird, ford ltd, 1/2 ton truck, 3/4 ton truck, 78 ford t-bird, ford taurus, my first car being a mercury lynx, then a 93 ford festiva, hubby owned a 93 ford ranger 4x4, 98 windstar, my mom owns a 96 explorer and so on. my friend just got rid of her 2000 explorer which she lovingly named her 'ford exploder'. thanks for listening to my rant and i really hope that with everyone's input that something can be done about this. *nm

My family and i went to my family members house and after putting the vehicle in park and unlocking the doors my daughter's door (rear passenger) would not unlock nor open for the inside or outside, by switch nor manually. for my daughter to exit the vehicle she had to climb in the front seat to exit the vehicle, we have a baby that rides in a car seat so she couldn't exit on the driver passenger side. i've discovered that the only way to fix this is take the panel off and take the one screw off that holds the handle mechanism and pull it a few times to finally release the latch. i just read about a ford recall on faulty latches. the only difference in this recall and my latch issue is my latch will not return to an open state. i feel that my issue is related in the same context, and feel that there is a safety issue because if something happen my daughter could not get out of the vehicle. *tr

I have a 2002 ford explorer xls that was purchased new. approximately 1 year after purchase started developing a crack on the panel beneath the rear window. since then, when it is hot, i get a door open warning light. no door is opened, but the doors refuse to lock, and the warning light stays on. i believe water enters the panel beneath the window due to the crack. i had it looked at by dealers for the warning light-they cannot figure it out.*ak

Each winter since purchasing my 2002 ford explorer there have been days when the door would not latch shut and i was forced to wait for the mechanism to thaw or use one hand to keep the door from flying open as i drove. after thawing out the door would latch and i could continue safely. i always thought that this was a problem isolated to my vehicle though after hearing of the recent recall i am certain this is another in a long list of defects i have experienced. in fact on july 30, 2005 west herr ford of hamburg, ny had to replace both front door lock actuators because the drivers side door would not lock and the passenger side would not open from the outside. i now wonder if the constant freeze / thaw cycle of the water that obviously leaks into the door caused this damage. *jb

The front driver side door will not latch when the outside temp is below freezing. i had to warm the truck up for 10 minutes to heat up so the door would close correctly. this is a safety hazard and i think the door latch should be recalled because if the door does not latch correctly someone can be seriously injured. *nm

October 2001, i purchased a new 2002 ford explorer from don reid ford maitland, florida. i experienced one problem after the other with my windows and doors. first, the back half door came open and refused to close. the dealer repaired it. next, the replacement refused to work; the dealer ordered the part and repaired it. next, the entire back window, crashed to the ground. i placed the dragging part in the back of my truck and stopped at greenway ford. greenway refused the repair and sent me where i purchased it. don reid kept the truck a few days and repaired it. next, screws on the passenger side door came out, that door wouldn't close. fed up with repeated trips to don reid i had my husband fix it, the door came loose again. i'm at the limit on what i'll endure from a vehicle i'm paying nearly $500.00/mo for. it's not worth the pain i am experiencing. i almost died on august 26, 5:30 to 6:00 pm, when the locked driver's door suddenly swung open and closed on my arm. i was leaning on the armrest. the seat belt kept me from being thrown. i nearly ran off the road. my arm hurt and started to swell. the door refused to latch. i held the heavy door shut with my swollen arm and controled the truck with the other. i crawled 35 minutes to orlando. my hand was numb and i was scared to death. i pulled over to rest my numb arm. i pulled into winn dixie's parking lot and a customer, reversed into the back of my truck, adding to it's damages. still holding the door, i made it home. don reid, whom i had previously called, had closed. my arm hurts more than it did yesterday. fortunately, some of the swelling went down. my adjuster asked me to keep the truck. he's making towing arrangements. i'm seeing my doctor tomorrow for stronger meds. as a graduate i cannot afford time off. the door cannot close or lock. my husband has to leave work early to collect our daughters from school. enough is enough!*ak

Car was parked. when my wife was walking to the vehicle, she noticed a large crack down the back door (hatch area) of vehicle which is directly below the glass. take note that if this panel falls off (and could with the crack), it could fall onto another vehicle causing harm or tragedy. if the panel also falls off, the glass is no longer supported which also can result in it falling off onto another vehicle or onto the highway causing an accident.

There is a recall on my 2002 ford explorer concerning the liftgate hinges. i was notified in september that the parts would be in the dealerships in november. they have just arrived in february. in the meantime the applique on my liftgate has cracked. i was told that ford would not pay to have it repaired and that it will cost about $350.00. this is my 3 ford explorer and will probably be the last. all my dealer tells me is that there is nothing they can do. i wrote a letter to ford and they didn't even respond. what kind of customer service is that?*ak

I purchased a 2002 ford explorer this year. i had not owned it for very long when in august 2004 the liftgate malfunfunctioned. i was extremely lucky that i was not injured. i reported the malfucntion both to nhtsa and to ford. ford still has not redesigned the parts for this vehicle and to make matters worse the upper liftgate of my vehicle is now cracked in two. the delay in redesigning the parts and addressing this issue has exacerbated the stress the liftgate of my vehicle was under and allowed the upper liftgate to crack in two. i contacted ford and they said that yes there is a recall on specific parts but expressed that i have to pay for the cracked liftgate. i am furious at this side stepping of the issue by ford. i am an attorney and will seek all legal recourse available to me regarding this.*ak

Crack in liftgate that occurred spontaneously when weather became winter--rear wipers were used and crack occurred. recall was done at this area dealer summer 2005 prior to correct liftgate recall.....we inquired about possible over tightening during recall service and it was denied. we have had this car since the summer of 2002 and have had it in cold weather before and up until the recall fix it never cracked. concerned about glass falling out since the tailgate is cracked from top to bottom. the dealer asserted that it was a known problem with cracks in liftgate... since we are not under warranty we had to pay $600 to get this fixed. mileage on the car is only 23000!!!!! it is the safety issue of glass falling out while driving or falling into the car upon my children that concerns me. many internet websites i have been to discuss other such cracks occurring in the tailgate i don't understand why some dealers are willing to help and others don't. the prices vary too which amazes me. *jb

My 2002 ford explorer had it's rear glass fall off when i attempted to open it 2 days ago. i called ford and they sounded surprised. i called them back with the information about the 50,000+ vehicles recalled for this and they remain unimpressed. i'm looking for some help. i called winchester ford, (winchester va) 540 667 4434. any help would be appreciated. thanks very much, ben

I bought a 2002 explorer on may 23,2002. in the past 8 months, the vehicle has been towed in because it woudn't start--acomputer chip was replaced. my a/c made a high pitch squeal and after at least five times of trying to repair the existing a/c clutch, a new one was finally put on. my front end suspension has been fixed. my midlift gate cracked in november and a new one was put on. i have had daily problems with the driver's side seat not fully going into position when i start my truck and this problem has not been fixed as the service dept. that i deal with nevers seems to be able to see the problem. funny how it does it every day for me, though. my blinkers will sometimes stick and stay on without blinking--this also has not been fixed. at the beginning of january,2003, on the way home from a trip, my husband and i noticed that every time we slowed the truck down, there was a blast of air from the upper vents in the vehicle. this happened no matter what setting we had it in (ie. defrost or floor vents). this past thursday, jan.16, the suspension was repaired and supposedly the heating system was as well. now the air doesn't seem to leak out the top vents, but continuosly comes out of the floor vent, no matter what setting the heat is on. i have a rental vehicle once again, while they keep the vehicle overnight tonight to see if they can hopefully fix this problem. needless to say, we are currently checking into the lemon law for our state!!!
