My 2002 explorer is also having the same problems which have been previously noted by other explorer owners. the whining when reaching 50-60 km/hr, which goes away when you take your foot off the gas, the slipping and shuddering of gears and sometimes passing gear never kicks in, the abs light comes on (usually after the truck has warmed up and it doesn't seem to happen when the weather is really cold), the abs is now starting to act up, wherein it randomly activates itself even while on dry pavement and the brakes feel mushy when this happens. now the locks are randomly not working. i would like to share one instance about the passing, shuddering, slipping was when i was traveling on the highway with my kids, i pulled out to pass, and when i stepped on it the truck shuddered so hard, that my daughter, who was coloring a mother' day card, actually scribbled when it shuddered, if that makes any sense. she was po'd at me asking me why did i do that and now her card was ruined. we have had the transmission in for service and were told nothing was wrong. we had the transmission fluid changed and the truck worked fine for about 2 weeks and then back to the same old problems. my husband and i are seriously considering trading this piece of crap vehicle off and we have decided that it will only be imports from now on. ford needs to wake up and start fixing all of these problems or they will be finding themselves bankrupt in no time. i was brought up as a kid in fords; 67 t-bird, ford ltd, 1/2 ton truck, 3/4 ton truck, 78 ford t-bird, ford taurus, my first car being a mercury lynx, then a 93 ford festiva, hubby owned a 93 ford ranger 4x4, 98 windstar, my mom owns a 96 explorer and so on. my friend just got rid of her 2000 explorer which she lovingly named her 'ford exploder'. thanks for listening to my rant and i really hope that with everyone's input that something can be done about this. *nm

2002 ford explorer 1. abs sensor light came on in march 2003. took car to ford dealership and they replaced it. abs light went out for a short time. then, aug, 2003, abs light came on again. took into a dealership, they replaced the sensor. abs light went out. but it came back on again soon afterward. in the meantime, my warranty expires. 2. failure to adequately diagnose this problem in the first place has lead to a bad rear hub assembly. now i have a repair outside my warranty that should have been taken care of in the first place. 3. ford refuses to acknowledge responsibility for their faulty problem. they require that i pay for a diagnosis to find out what the problem is. being that this is related to something that they have a history on during my warranty period, they should be responsible for the repairs and costs. *ak

My cars cruise control failed to disengage when i applied the footbrake, pushed the off switch, the gear shift would not move and the key would not turn off. the car was checked by police and when it was tested they were unable to find a fault in the failsafes however they are still suspicious of the vehicle. i had to call police and was in a runaway car on the freeway for 30mins. when i hit a median strip i lost enough speed to be able to use the little braking power i had left, as each time i applied the brakes the engine would accelerate back to the set sped and the brake pedal became hard to push. when i stopped i also pulled the handbrake as ordered by the police over the phone to avoid a headon, the left shoe of the handbrake snapped and the car skidded to a stop. the police disconnected the battery when they did testing. so i've been told any fault codes or faults either with the cruise control or the ecu may now be lost. ford are claiming this could never happen, but im starting to read on other sites the same things are happening to other people. i could be dead along with alot of other people that day. the police also had issues moving the gear shift that day on my car to get it onto a tow truck, so its not just the driver. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 ford explorer. while approaching a stop at approximately 35 mph on normal road conditions, the brake pedal extended to the floor when it was depressed. the engine idled roughly and the check engine warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. the indicator remained lit until the engine was turned off. when the ignition was started, the engine would automatically idle without acceleration. the failures occurred on a separate occasion. the vehicle has not been repaired and cannot be driven. the contact was concerned of the safety risk involved. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 111,000 and current mileage was 114,000.

Purchased a 2002 ford explorer in 2003 with 30,000 miles on it. almost instantly a humming noise came from what i think is the front driver side, may be more areas, and was unsure what to do with it. replaced brakes a few years later and mechanic told me bearings were warped and needed to be replaced. i asked the mechanic what the consequence would be if no repairs were made and he stated none. i read a message board about the 2002 explorer and this seems to be an issue for many owners. i also researched the consequence of a bearing not being replaced and the consequences can result in death. please take the time to research this issue before someone really gets hurt. *tr

2002 ford explorer emergancy brake failure. 1) pa state safety inspection was performed at ford dealer. 2) drum brake linings were found in total seperation from metal shoes. condition is likely due to a combination of corosion and lack of adhesive between lining and metal shoe. 3) per the ford dealer's disccovery and sugested repair... the emergancy brake and drum/rotors were replaced. ford did not take liabiity or cover the expense.  After bringing my car to the dealership, i was informed that i needed back brakes. i took the car to my mechanic and he informed me that my brake pads and rotors were completely rusted through and rotted. this could have potentially caused the car to become unable to stop. i had to replace all four brakes (routine), brake pads, and rotors. my car only has 40,000+ miles on it. *nm

Several problems - at 9,000 miles my brakes went and had to have my rotors resurfaced by 23,000 miles my rear brakes were completely gone and my front brakes were nearly gone. this cost me over $1,000 to repair. at 25-27,000 miles my vehicle would not change gears properly. going in reverse the vehicle would bang into gear, then going from park to any gear this would happen. on level ground and on hill. the dealership said they guessed at the problem and fixed something in the transmission. at 32,000 miles the piece of plastic under the liftgate window completely cracked. since under warranty the dealership is fixing this. there has been a whining noise while using the gas pedal for some time that the dealership can not recreate.... i expect that to go wrong as soon as my warranty expires. i think you only get 36,000 mile warranty because they know the vehicle will fall apart after that!*jb

Where to start... broken cruise control, headlight switch has a short, driver side passenger window doesn't roll down, trouble going into gear, car suddenly dies at interstate speeds, loud grinding sound from the engine bay (like an electric knife sharpener) that is getting increasingly more frequent, service engine soon light will not go off, brakes squeal and don't stop the vehicle properly, support for the hatch (which is cracked 8 inches or so in two places) doesn't lift hatch completely, and the fuel economy is down to 4-6 mpg in the city. i hate it! i don't feel like my girlfriend is safe driving it, and i think ford should be forced to make their wrongs into rights! *tr

After normal driving i began to hear a loud grinding and humming noise coming from the rear drivers side tire of my 2002 ford explorer. after going to my mechanic he had said my rear bearing and hub are bad which also made my rear tire unstable. he began to tell me it is a major problem with this vehicle and the bearings, hubs, and brakes were defective due to the fact that they cannot handle the braking load of this vehicle. after researching the problem online it would seem he is correct. this is a major safety problem in that all the bearings and hubs eventually go bad and can fail at anytime making the tires unstable and could fall off during driving. this is obviously a defective design and /or parts installed in this vehicle. there are many complaints of the same events happening to other owners. since this is a major safety issue and a very expense fix for unsuspecting owners i hope you look into this issue and make ford issue a recall. thank you. *tr

I own a 2002 ford explorer xlt, i have had problems with my abs light coming on and my brakes not working correctly, they pulsate as if they are trying to engage even when it is 90 degrees outside and completely dry. nothing upsets me more than having to put on my brakes and having the feeling they are not going to work. this puts me in danger as well as those who own this model. i am scared to drive it anymore. i am asking for help here before i kill myself, my family or some random person because of faulty brakes. i don't think i should have to pay out of pocket for faulty abs problem that ford has screwed up on. below it asks for an incident date, let me tell you there have been several times in which they kick on and it feels like i'm not going to stop!!!! why does there have to be a death before these companies finally recall and fix the problem?? *tr

On or about november 3, 2005, i purchased a break model used ford explorer xlt 2002 from norm reeves honda car dealer in cerritos, ca. the car had 78,000 miles on it at the time of purchase. i signed the papers and took the possession of the car. it has not been more than 2 months that the car started giving me trouble on the pick up of the speed, transmission, gear adjustment, over use of the gas, difficult high altitude driving even after change of gears, air suction into the engine and transmission, accelerator and signs like service engine soon on the front panel, although i have been getting regular lube and tune on the car after every 3000 miles. while driving the, occasionally, the car gives a thundering noise on the tires as if it is dragging itself and running on the road. this makes me fear that my car is not safe for me to drive! the norm reeves honda super store car dealer knew that the car is defective and they simply wanted to get rid of a used 2002 ford explorer xlt vehicle from the fleet as they primarily sell honda cars and similar vehicles. despite repeated requests, the norm reeves honda super store and their sister company ford of cerritos refused to provide service on the car since i stopped payments on the car loan. other ford car dealers have test driven this car and observed the same defects as i have mentioned. my purpose of writing this complaint with the nhtsa is to request the intervention of nhtsa immediately as the questioned vehicle is likely to endanger my life on the local roads and/or on highway/freeways. due to major defects in the car, i can meet with a serious accident and can be crippled or suffer such pecuniary losses that are irreplaceable and/or i can die also with out any fault of mine. please recall firestone tires v. ford motor company case law. criminal charges against norm reeves honda, ford of cerritos and their ceos to follow. please contact me and the dealers asap. respectfully submitted, amardeep singh gill. *nm

When we first bought our 2002 explorer xlt from finks used car lot in zanesville ohio it had about 22 or so thousand miles on it and we requested a check up on the vehicle. the back hatch brackets was replaced, and the back wheel brakes were sticking and burning, locking up. that problem seemed to be fixed. then the antilock brake system light started coming on and the front brakes seemed to be grabbing....just last month. i had the cruise control set on the vehicle once and it smelled like something smoldering so i shut it off and it hasn't been on since. i called the ford garage to ask if my cruise control was on the fire hazard list because the vehicle was built in 2001. i was told if i did not receive a letter in the mail it wouldn't be replaced. this vehicle was still under warranty when i bought it. so far i am getting nothing but the back hatch brackets replaced. the vehicle was parked and it now has 29,956.0 miles on it. i am driving my 1995 auto with 122,000 miles on it waiting for winter and graduation from college. i am afraid the brakes are going to lock up in the winter and send me sailing. i want to know if there have been any other complaints on this explorer built in 2001 that is a 2002 explorer. *nm

Abs light comes on intermittently, the brakes seem to stick and smell like they are burning. i have had the vehicle in for service 3 times for the same problem but the problem happens intermittently, so 2 of the 3 dealerships said that there was no problem. my brake pads are now pre-maturely worn and the latest dealership has claimed to have replaced a sensor on the differential that will fix the problem. after being told that there wasn't a problem, next that the rear brakes were worn out, and then that the sensor was bad. my vehicle has 25,000 miles on it and about 30% left on the rear brakes and 40% on the front brake pads. i have made 4 round trips from chicago to new orleans, and 1 round trip from chicago to las angeles totaling about 13,000 of the 25,000 miles on the vehicle. i have never had a vehicle that needed brake pads replaced after 25,000 let alone a vehicle with over half of its miles from interstate driving. ford refuses to take responsibility for the pre-mature wear of my brakes. after reading several of the similar complaints on this website, i doubt that ford dealers have a clue about what the actual problem is and how to fix it. *jb

*tr

On june 29, 2005, during annual state inspection my 2002 explorer had to have new rear brake rotors installed for the 2nd time due to rust. mileage was 24,713 miles. purchased vehicle new on march 29, 2002. august 14, 2003, approximately 10,250 miles, had to replace the rear rotors due to rusting. ford dealership recommended the brake linings be replaced as well. ford covered this complete cost. in this 2nd instance, ford will cover nothing since vehicle is beyond its 36 month warranty, & brakes are considered wear items. i believe this is a safety issue, as the rusting of the rear rotors prevented my vehicle from passing the state safety inspection. additionally, this is my 3rd explorer, all purchased new, & the only one having this problem. initial 1991 explorer driven 9 years & over 70,000 miles; 2nd explorer a 2000 model still driving, over 54,000 miles, had the rear rotors & brake pads replaced after 44 months, 33,692 miles. have lived in the same area & driven the same roads with all 3 vehicles. have had essentially all service work done by the selling ford dealer in all 3 instances. if the brake pads were wearing out, & the rotors were being damaged due to the worn pads, i could understand how this condition was due to my negligence in not attending to the braking system. however, the brake pads have not been worn out in either replacement situation. the service adviser & service manager both claim there is nothing they can do, as the rotors cannot be turned, rust is a common problem with brake rotors, and ford regards brake rotors as wear components. correspondence thru ford's internet site repeated rotors are considered a wear item & cannot be covered, regardless of the reason for replacement. no one will provide any ford regional contact information for discussion. it appears to be a no win situation where the manufacturer can classify a component as a wear item & have no consequences when the component fails for other non-wear reasons. *nm

I had the oil changed on the explorer and they told me i would need to get the brake pads replaced very soon. i intended to get a couple quotes for this job but we had a death in the family so i took the explorer back to lapeer ford to have the brakes serviced. they called and said that the rotors had deteriorated to the point that they could not turn them down. i ask how they deteriorated and they said the rotors had rusted. i gave permission to replace the rotors at a price of $400. i also indicated i would like for them to talk to ford about the deterioration. i also called ford. ford gave me an answer that the dealer said that the replacement of the rotors was normal maintenances and lapeer ford gave me an answer that ford said the replacement of the rotors was normal maintenances. the explorer had 41000 miles and i had the vehicle for two years. the rotors had rusted to the point that i had only about 50% of the surface contacting the brake pads. this rough surface also caused the brake pads to deteriorate faster. i ask for the rotors to be replace free and was refused. i also ask the a receive a partial rebate for the pads because they had deteriorated faster because of the rust on the rotors. they refused as normal maintenances. i feel the rotors should not rust to this point and also caused a safety factor because only 50% of the braking surface remained. i have the rotors and pads that were replaced. *nm

Concerning 2002, ford, explorer, eddie bauer: we were driving on 09/19/2004 when a car drove up next to us and driver stated that rear brakes were smoking. no brakes were on. we pulled over, and saw that they were smoking and smelled badly. called ford roadside assistant to tow us to landmark ford, in tigard, oregon. upon inspection on 09/20/04, parts were replaced. two weeks later on october 3,2004, we were again driving and when we got home, and noticed that the rear left brakes were smoking and smelled badly. we called ford roadside assistance ,and had the car towed again to landmark ford. upon inspection on 10/4/04 we were told that they could not identify the problem and therefore would not replace any parts. we spoke with service manager larry baker concerning this issue. he asked us to drive the car home, and if it happens again to call and bring the car down. on friday april 15,2005 we were driving with our two nieces when we noticed the left rear brakes started smoking and smelling badly. we were close enough to home and made it. the entire wheel on the left side was too hot to touch, the rubber on the tire was also very hot. we called ford roadside assistance again to have the car towed down to landmark ford. we received a call on tuesday 04/19,2005 from service department that they could not identify the problem. we were asked again to pick up the car, and call if any problems arose. three times the same exact thing has happened while driving. smoking and smelling brakes is a serious safety hazard, and we are concerned that one time if this happens again the car could catch on fire. it appears to be an intermittent problem, and the service department manager mike walker stated previously that they have had some problems with this before, but not enough to put out a recall. we would appreciate some investigation into this matter as we are concerned for our safety, and the safety of others on the road. *ak
