The back door is cracked between the windows the the latch. this morning the latch stopped working and i can't keep the rear latch closed.

We opened the rear window to get something out of the trunk, lifted the window and the window exploded and crashed on my husband's head. it seems as if the hydrolics failed on each side of the rear window. glass just shattered and was everywhere. my husband's hands were cut and his head was banged up.

Pulled into park, went to shift vehicle into park (was fully stopped) and gear shifter broke off. i did not apply any force, just the normal typical action of shifting the gear. good thing it was in neutral when it snapped. took rubber seal off of the gear lever arm and the part which the lever arm was attached had totally broken off. the metal was not stripped or twisted but broken. part #905-104: column shift repair

Transmission took a crap, it seems to be a know problem with the 2002 & 2003 explorers. guess we should have looked into the explorer better.

I've been having an issue with my truck saying the door is ajar when it's not. while driving, the inside light will come on and lock/unlock the doors. i noticed it usually happens either while its raining or if it just finished raining. someone else i know who has the same vehicle (year/make/model) says the same thing happens to his vehicle. i'm wondering if you have heard of this before and if so, what steps do the manufactures take in deciding whether or not a vehicle needs to be recalled for a specific problem? any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated!

I just purchased the vehicle in a private sale on 11/09/12 and on 11/10/12 went to shift from park into reverse on a flat surface and my shift lever broke off and i am not able to shift my vehicle.

While coming off a freeway my car suddenly jerked and the transmission failed. causing my vehicle to stop. when trying to move forward the car began to try to roll backwards into the car behind me. i was lucky i was coming to a stop rather then going full speed on the freeway. after much research i have found that this is an all too common problem with this make model and year. the transmission now needs to be completly rebuilt according to 2 mechanics.

The service engine light came on and i was told there might be a transmission problem. after the service the light was off and i was going again. at 107,000 miles the light came back on and back to the service departmant and they said the #5 ring was having problems i could drive it and it would get worse. it was also mentioned this year explorer had many transmission issues. now they want a minimum of $3,500 to fix the suv and the trade-in is only worth $3,500 dollars. i now have 117,500 miles on it and it shifts hard and goes in reveserves slowly. i have talked to ford to no avail at all. the say sorry but we can't help with fixing it at all. there is no discounted rate for an issue that is well known on the blogs. this seems to be against the fact that ford says they have the bext trucks on the road if they think 117,000 miles is enough to replace the transmission. i do not understand the fact they think it is okay to charge that amount for a known issue on the 2002 - 2004 model explorers. i need help as i can't afford to fix it to trade it in and i don't see putting $3,500 plus into some thing that may only last one day to maybe a year.

Ford dealership and local mechanic have witnessed dozen of cases with ford in which the vehicle is vibrating at higher speeds. we have tried replacing tires, balancing, and wheel alignments. i have read hundreds, if not thousands of people complaining about this issue online, but ford has done nothing to educate their staff or public about this issue. most common identified issue has been the rear differentials, but those who have had them replaced has had the vibration come back after time.

This is an update to complaint no. 10459987. after looking at the car records, we discovered that during a service of my transmission, ford factory required the dealership to cut the metal transmission line and installed a rubber line with a filter. if they did not install the filter, then the warranty would have been void. after installing, no one ever inspected or replaced the line or filter. it was simply forgotten. 75,000 miles later the rubber line was resting on the exhaust, which burned a hole and caused transmission fluid to leak and spray onto the catalytic converter and caught fire. we were lucky in that we saw the smoke early and no one was injured. i am concerned there are more cars out there with this retro-fit filter on the transmission that no one is inspecting or maintaining because it is not on an official maintenance schedule.

I just had my car serviced for a recall at cherokee ford in woodstock ga. just 3 days later, my vehicle stopped working in the middle of a very busy street and i was unable to restart it. i was very lucky not to be hit. it would have been tragic.

I was driving on the freeway when i looked back in my rear view mirror and noticed smoke billowing out the back of my car. i pulled over. my husband got out of the car and looked under the front. i smelled fire and he said it's on fire. my husband saw a liquid dripping from the car that was clearly on fire. i turned the car off. we immediately got ourselves and our 2 young children, ages 7 and 5, out of the car. the fire stopped once the car was off. fortunately, no one was injured. i was told by the tow truck operator and the mechanic that fixed the car that a transmission hose was sitting on the exhaust pipe, causing a leak in the hose and the resulting fire. i am also concerned that my car may be subjected to a recall regarding a faulty cruise control after reading on the internet.

About a year after i purchased my explorer ltd, the rear logo panel started coming loose. i used special adhesive to attach it, but it just wouldn't stick. i tried pulling it off, but it wouldn't budge on the other side, so i tried a different adhesive. it stuck for a while, but as i was going down a busy street, it flew off almost hitting the car behind me. this very easily could have caused an accident and serious injury.

My wife started our explorer and tried to put the vehicle in reverse and the gear shift handle snapped off in her hand. only to find out that this problem has happened to many other ford owners! unbelievable! so now i have to have my vehicle towed to a repair shop to have this ford problem fixed! and also shell out over $1000 dollars just so i can get my explorer back on the road!!! and when i called the local ford garage to ask about this defect, they acted as if this problem has never happed before! bs!

Due to a defect, we had to have the transmission replaced (thank god it was still under warranty)...then had to have the door ajar sensor fixed because alarm kept going off for no reason. about two years ago we were abut to go out of town for thanksgiving. i stop at a red light, and then we try to pull off when the light changes and hear the loudest popping noises...we're wondering how in the world did the spark plug pop out with so much force that it also rips the ignition coil...(fast forward to 1yr later, same thing happens while leaving home to go to work). once again, on march 12, while on my way to work, sitting at a traffic light. light turns green...i start to pull off and begin hearing a popping noise...wth...not again!!! (this is the third time this has happened in 2 years). come on ford...fix the lemons!!!!

2002 ford explorer transmission died for the second time after i had the dealership replace it, 75,000 miles ago. i am now sitting at 156000 and it is doing the same things again. this gives me such a bad taste toward ford, and i have been a die hard ford guy.

While driving my car to work, i came to a stop sign at the end of my road, like i do every morning. however, on this morning, as i tried to accelerate from a complete stop, my car bogged down which left me in the road for seconds longer then was safe. there was a car speeding around the curve, and my car would not accelerate like it should. finally, and thank god, it jammed into gear, and me and my one year old son were not injured. also, on that same day, my car starting skipping while in first gear, which also was a safety hazard because it was jerking so hard, it was hard to keep in under control, plus it also slowed my progression across highly congested areas down, which also put my safety at risk. we took my car to the shop, and the repairman stated that my transmission was having problems with first gear and overdrive. there had been no previous warning or indicators that something was wrong with my transmission until the day of. we had the fluid checked and the engine checked. nothing was wrong that we could have prevented.

Hi i have a 2002 ford explorer that i have only had for 7 months and approximately 1 week ago my car started to have problems shifting gears while driving. not long after that my check engine light came on and my o/d light came on, so i took it to autozone to get the code read and they told me it was a pressure control selenoid b (code-p0775). i went home and started searching on the internet about the code and found what it was and i also saw thousands of people complaining about the same problem. ford knows about this issue about their faulty transmissions and they refuse to issue any recalls to fix the problem. i think its outrageous that we, the owners, have to pay for this expensive repair when its not our fault. i feel like since the transmissions for this car is faulty and is known to fail at various times and miles, which are too low for a transmission to fail, fors should be held responsible for this problem because it is definately a safety issue because the transmission can fail at anytime which have caused many accidents and will cause more accidents and deaths until ford take responsiblity for their actions and recall the transmissions. i have two small kids that are in the car with me on a daily basis and i travel on the highways all the time and this is going to be very dangerous for me to do now. i dont know what to do becuase i dont have any money to repair or replace the transmission and this car is the only car that we have for transportation. we all need help to get ford to do a recall.

The trunk of my vehicle has developed a sizable crack in the rear panel only through normal use. i have seen this on a number of other similar vehicles and know it is not only me with this problem.

Timing belt tensioner......my car is making noises and every mechanic i take my truck to either tell me to get a new motor or sell it and no mechanic wants to work on it because its so complicated... :/ as a single mother either option is not an option....both my driver and rear pasenger window motors broke, i already put in a new transmission 3 months ago...and now this.....i took it to the dealership on 11/10/11 and its funny how they kind of laugh abou this model of vehicle and give me the same look that other mechanics give me about how the tensioner is on the back of the vehicle and they'd need to take the entire engine out to repair it, and if you dont repair it there is a chance that the tensioner will break and cause the entire back part of the motor to break......this needs to be looked into and recalled since there are so many drivers with the same problem on the same model. please help..please refer to the thousands of complaints at the following site... http://www.carcomplaints.com/ford/explorer/2002/

In my 2002 ford explorer, the cel came on, along with the o/d off light blinking. it started to make a whining noise, and the next day, the car would not shift into second gear. it would only stay in 1st gear and would only go about 20 mph. i now have to replace the transmission or have it rebuilt.

Transmission died ford would not warrenty.

Purchased this vehicle today and on way home the transmission od off light started flashing. research shows this is a major common problem with a failed transmission in this model. i am on social security disability and cannot afford the $3,000 plus to fix.
09/20/201193000
The transmission has a 5 second delay when going into reverse or drive. the car transmission jerks forward suddenly and randomly shifts into a higher or lower gear while driving. there is a loud grinding noise while the car is running and while the gears are shifting.

I have a 2002 ford explorer xlt, my transmission just recently went out. it has about 142,000 miles. i took it to a transmission specialist, to get it fixed, they took it apart, and told me it was costing $3,786.60 to get it fixed/rebuilt! as of right now my truck is still in the shop, it has been there for 2 weeks now. there is no way can afford to pay that, im just a student. i did some research online and it turns out that there is thousands of people with the same problem; transmissions go out and the majority on the 2002 model. they rebuild the transmission, only for it to go out again. some people have replaced/rebuilt their transmissions 4 or 5 times. i also read that these trucks can stop at any moment; anywhere. this is very dangerous, especially if on the freeway. i don't see why ford, didn't recall this truck or this transmission. they need to take responsibility and fix the problem. i have no idea, what i am going to do to get my truck fixed.. or maybe even replaced.

I bought my 2002 ford explorer in 2005. at about 85000 miles i noticed the transmission started to slip and often jerks real hard when shifting into 3rd. i had the transmission fluid changed by an authorized ford dealer in my area and they told me there are no metal shavings in the fluid, however, they did tell me that the 2002 fords are well knows for having transmission problems and they see it all the time in this make model and year. i called ford and they told me there are no recalls on the transmission, however, reading all the problems on the internet about owners who have complained, i feel there should be a recall on this because it is a safety issue!

I was riiding along the highway in my 2002 ford explorer with my two kids on vacation. we had been driving for about 4 hours . i was using the cruise control. i came to a red light then contiinued on for about 2 miles than all of a sudden the check temp gauge came on and the guage was all the way hot. i waited for a safe place on the side of the rode to pull over. as soon as the truck was put in park smoke started coming in through the glove box and the hood. my son who was sitting in the passenger seat said his legs felt hot. a passerby pulled over and yelled get your stuff and get out of the truck. we had enough time to get what we could and run. the truck started to burn and all we could do was watch. we were stranded 4 hours from home. luckily for us the good samaritans probably saved our lives. the truck went from hot to fully involved in a matter of a few minutes. by the time the fire dept. came the truck was a total loss.

I have a 2002 ford explorer that i purchased 8 months ago. i have had to replace the switch that controls the windows 8 times now. the driver side window goes down while noone is touching it and will not go back up. i have jumped the window up and disconnected the plug until i could afford it every time that this has happened. the cost is about $200 to repair. i feel that this is a safety issue because it is so frequent and until a person can afford to fix the problem you have to jump your window and disconnect the plug, allowing none of the windows to go down. what if there was an accident and putting a window down was the only way for an adult or a child to get out of this vehicle? to me that is dangerous! and terrifying! in 8 months of owning a vehicle that i paid $6,500 for i have now put $1,600 into on top of it! and i will continue to have to do so if this problem is not recalled. i have taken the vehicle to 4 different garages and the only fix option i am getting is to replace the switch! there has to be something more than this if the switch is going bad every month or more! this last time it took a whole 3 days for the switch to go bad again! i understand that some people may feel as though this is not dangerous or is not a safety issue, but lets be real here.....if the plug is not connected the windows cannot got down. so if there is a fire or an accident and this is the only way out people may die!! some people may say to just keep paying to have the problem fixed, however it is getting expensive and it is not truly fixing whatever the problem is! ford made this vehicle and should have to fix this issue!!

My 2002 ford explorer has a rear end noise it is really loud ive noticed many explorers have the same problem. i have replace rear axle the whole rear end and the nise comes back i think its rediculous that i have to pay all this money to fix it when its a wide spread problem for ford explorers. ford should have a solution by now and should fix it for free.the noise is a constant when driving.

Transmission is whining and needs to be replaced

My wife was preparing to take our 3 children to school. she put our 2002 ford explorer in reverse and backed out of our driveway. after stopping, she attempted to shift into drive. the gear shift lever broke, leaving her with a car stuck in neutral. the keys are locked in the ignition and cannot be removed. after researching this online, i was very surprised to discover this is not a recall item and that ford motor company's recommended fix is changing out the entire steering column. is this really true?

Over the years we have had repeated problems with the transmission. it jerks and struggles to change gears. when you travel at freeway speeds it whines and jerks when it changes gears and when you're stopped at a light it makes weird noises and hesitates when you put your foot on the gas. we have repeatedly had the transmission repaired over the years.

Gear shift in my 2002 ford explorer broke off while trying to put my car in gear. i have been informed by the local dealer that the part is part of the steering column and it would cost approx. $1200.00 to replace. the part that broke is made of alumiumn and is only about 4-5 inches long. this was a danger to me because my driveway is on a slight incline. in addition if the vehicle went into reverse, i could of had cause property damage and how would i put the vehicle back in park?

While inspecting the left, rear wheel bearing a broken spring was found. it was determined that the wheel bearing was also in a stage of failure. a load noise like the vehicle had truck tires was coming from the rear. the spring was fractured at the top in multiple places and partially collapsed

My ford 2002 explorer has excessive bubbling and peeling of paint on the front edge of the hood. reported three times to ford only to be told, not covered by my warranty. seen hundreds of similar complaints on internet.

I am so disgusted after reading all the same problems with the 2002 ford explorer. i too have the airbag problem, they told me it was the airbag pretentioner and it is $650.00, now my air bag will not deploy if i get into an accident. i have the extended deluxe warranty that wont cover it. i also have a problem with the rear temp and mode actuators that failed and binding again not covered under warranty that is $510.00 to repair. i truly think ford should recall these same problems.

While raising the glass section of the liftgate on my 2002 ford explorer, the left strut became disengaged, and the back glass exploded. we were very lucky that no one was hurt, as my brother literally had the glass in his hands when it exploded, and my daughter and i were standing right next to him. please note, the glass did not merely shatter. it exploded. i bought this vehicle from carmax last year, and found that there were a couple of recalls on the vehicle that had not been taken care of, one of which included the replacement of the strut brackets and hinges on the liftgate. upon reviewing my service invoice, i found that only the liftgate hinges were replaced; the strut brackets were not. i had the vehicle towed to the ford dealership who performed the recall service originally, and they notified ford. ford claimed that the struts had been replaced in 2002 ~ which was two years before the recall even occured. therefore, they would not cover any of the repair. how do i know that faulty struts were not installed in 2002, since the recall didn't even occur until 2 years later? i have read other complaints online about this, and it is amazing that ford gets away with this! this is my last ford, that's for sure! this is my second explorer, and i have been a very loyal customer, but no more! ford does not stand behind it's product and they apparently do not care about the safety of their customers.

Defective transmission in a 2002 ford explorer eddie bauer after only 117k miles. transmission fails shifting between 2nd and 3rd gears. some times gets stock in parking. complete failure estimated repair cost $3600 to $4000

2002 ford explorer xls. i was shifting from drive to park and the shifter broke in my hand. not a good thing. after doing some research it seems this a common problem with ford explorers due to the cast aluminum that is used in the part. ford should have a recall for this, seeing as how it happens due to the way it was made not due to driver error.

2002 ford explorer with 120000 miles. transmission began to slip 3rd gear. stalling in traffic. ford dealer could not look at it for 2 days so went to independent shop who knew the porblem well. not only had to replace solenoid vavles, but also torque converter and rebuild. had to drill out one port and install stronger linkage part ford offerred since 20006

Re nhtsa # 04v-442. 2002 ford explorer. liftgate glass hinge sheared and glass fell on me. i was told by service dept that ford recall 04s20 (performed in 2004) was only warranteed for 1 year, so i purchased new hinge kit (2l2z-78420a68-aa) and installed myself. after examining old parts, i noticed significant redesign. after discussion with a ford service manager it appears that initial recall repairs were insufficient and by his estimate the hinges last about 3 years. there were several modifications to the recalled parts and procedures since 12/04. my vehicle was repaired 12/20/04 so the most recent procedure was not followed at the time and most recent parts were not installed. ford will not compensate for additional expenses once any recall repair was completed. i was not injured because i was opening the hatch slowly and had not let go before the hinge broke and the glass fell. i believed that the safety defect had been repaired. this is not the case. the danger still exists. i suggest a warning notice be sent to all owners that had recall performed before the final procedures (rcrit-04v442-7848) were developed. it would also encourage ford to cover the cost of repairs for the defective recall repair - including glass breakage - as they did for the original recall.

2002 ford explorer shifter broke while putting vehicle in drive looked at part made out of some type of granulated aluminum. can't beleive such a unsafe metal could be used in a vehicle part will call ford for estimate read over 50 complaints on carcomplaints.com couldn't believe that the dot has let this go on for so long. i will be contacting my local news team and other marines who have ford explorers and telling everyone that has an explorer.

I bought my 2002 ford explorer used but also have a father-in-law with a ford and he has the same problem. when we bought it the door ajar light was on all the time and the dome light would stay on but as we drove the light would turn off but the light would stay on. recently last week the light stays on like normal but not the lights goes on and off, it dings constantly, and the doors lock and unlock while going down the road. it is very distraactive as well as annoying. we got online to see what other people have done and there were lots of complaints. we tried the wd40 but they say that only works for a day or so.

I pulled into my driveway and went to put my vehicle into park and the gear shift was like a broken limb in my hand. i checked with several auto part stores and the replacement part is a dealer only part. ford will not sell the part to customer for personal repair. plus the cost to repair is very costly. i was seeking information and found several other complaints on autobeef-car complaints.com. seems like ford needs to reconsider this as recall

All 4 windows on my 2002 ford explorer no longer work properly. you either can hear they are going to soon fail or have already failed (the driver's side window has already failed and i had to spend over $500 for the repair and now my passenger-rear window has failed and will no longer go back up).

Apparently there is a problem with the hubs and bearings on the 2002 ford explorer. i have a rubbing sound, had it checked, and was told i have to replace them. it is approximately, $1000.00 (lowest i could find) to replace them. ford is aware of the problem, there is a technical service bulletin issued by ford (tsb 05-25-8, and 051710) which clearly describes the bearing issue to mechanics. unfortunately ford refused to address the issue.

I have a 2002 ford explorer that ejected a spark plug. the spark plug was original (it came with the vehicle and had never been changed). my wife was driving to church when the spark plug was completely ejected and broke the coil mount. this allows fuel vaper to escape from the cylinder head and could result in an engine fire. luckily, my wife didn't experience an engine fire since she was pulling into her destination when it happened and shut off the motor. the spark plug ejection stripped the threads from the cylinder head.

This is an accident waiting o happen. my panel below the rear window in 2002 explorer may soon fly and hit another car on the freeway and cause a big accident.this is a promlem from hundreds of other ford explorers. a recall should be made before major accidents happen because of this problem.

Noticed a grinding and whining noise coming from right side of my 2002 ford xlt explorer. also thought that i needed a new exhaust the car was making such loud noise. went to 2 different garages for pricing, i needed both front and rear bearings replaced actually the front bearing was about to fall off both garages stated. also the loud noise from my exhaust it was missing one bolt to the cover, covering the exhaust and or catalytic converter. also 8months prior the cars transmission was replaced. all of this expensive and costly repairs happened at 79,000 miles. this is a very dangerous vehicle and reading all of the other complaints this problem needs to be considered for recalls from ford. my family is very important to me and i use this car to travel and transport my family. i am very concerned and fords needs to investigate the problems arising with the 2002 ford xlt explorer problems and fix them. so far i have invested $5500 into this car i would not even get this for a trade in value. please consider my complaint and the many others very important. thank you *tr
