Like many other frustrated ford owners, i have had transmission problems with my explorer. its really frustrating when you take it to the repair shop and they dont even need to see it to know the transmission needs to be rebuilt, due to the track record of the faulty parts ford has used. its really sad when they know the transmission where not good and continued to install them for more years. i hope sooner or later they own up to their faults and do the right thing and recall the faulty transmissions. we spent good money for a quality american made car and did not expect to have to invest almost $3,000 in a new transmission the next year. ford will lose a lot of loyal customers over this and needs to address this problem.cc

Transmission failure - stupid design doesn't allow you to check fluid level, leak at transfer case seal seems to have caused loss of fluid and cannot be added without some special pump to fill transmission back up because it's a sealed unit. designed so only ford dealers can do service and then it just goes out and you're driving 65 mph down the mountain and unable to control speed. ford needs to recall these piece of crap transmissions yet won't even acknowledge there's a problem although every dealer & tranny mechanic knows of the issues.

At a stop, began accelerating to enter highway, accelerator pedal became stuck and car continued to accelerate up to 90 mph at full throttle before i shut vehicle off and put it in neutral. has happened on several occasions, all exactly the same. vehicle accelerates at full throttle and has to be shut off before an accident occurs. only way to correct problem is to exit vehicle and push gas pedal several times; start vehicle and see if engine is still at full throttle.

2002 ford explorer transmission failure and uncontrollable accelerator. the transmission had been shifting hard for months but it is considered by ford to be a sealed unit and it is not recommended that the customer maintain the fluid level, so there was nothing i could do. in jan 2010 the accelerator stuck while entering the freeway and we were out of control, i thought i was going to die and had to turn of the car on the freeway with no shoulder after brushing the guard rail and was subsequently rear ended. the o/d off light began blinking that day and it was tough to reach 60mph. service engine light came on and i shopped around for diagnostic. independent trans. guy said it needs complete rebuild, ford dlr agrees but for twice the cost. new parts are not available. it makes no sense why this car just started to fail on me like this, i'm the first owner and now its just decided to die and ford has been no help what so ever. now i'm looking at a repair that is 80% of the bluebook value. each mechanic i've brought it to says this problem is endemic to this model/year and there should be a recall. why would they put in a trans. that cannot be reasonably serviced and maintained and dies just after 100k mi. i have a very difficult time believing this was not planned by ford and i will never buy their products again! my car is no longer safe enough to drive to the grocery store let alone the freeway. this is a clear case of irresponsible manufacturing practices on fords part and warrants a recall! *tr

2002 ford explorer cruise control would not release, the car accelerated each time after trying to release the cruise control. i had to ride the brake to stop the car. i shut the racing engine down and tried to restart and found the engine raced as soon as it was started. if we were in traffic, we may have crashed. i stayed calm but thinking about my wife and son driving the car at times, they may not have reacted as i did. this was a very scary and dangerous situation. *tr

2002 ford explorer 1. going to full acceleration (pedal to the floor) when passing car or entering highway from side road 2. accelerator pedal stays pressed on the floor even when foot is removed. this happened twice on the last 2 times that the pedal was fully depressed. 3. failure is avoided by not pressing accelerator pedal all the way to the floor. *tr

My cars cruise control failed to disengage when i applied the footbrake, pushed the off switch, the gear shift would not move and the key would not turn off. the car was checked by police and when it was tested they were unable to find a fault in the failsafes however they are still suspicious of the vehicle. i had to call police and was in a runaway car on the freeway for 30mins. when i hit a median strip i lost enough speed to be able to use the little braking power i had left, as each time i applied the brakes the engine would accelerate back to the set sped and the brake pedal became hard to push. when i stopped i also pulled the handbrake as ordered by the police over the phone to avoid a headon, the left shoe of the handbrake snapped and the car skidded to a stop. the police disconnected the battery when they did testing. so i've been told any fault codes or faults either with the cruise control or the ecu may now be lost. ford are claiming this could never happen, but im starting to read on other sites the same things are happening to other people. i could be dead along with alot of other people that day. the police also had issues moving the gear shift that day on my car to get it onto a tow truck, so its not just the driver. *tr

I own a 2002 ford ranger xlt pick-up truck. in august of this year, 2007, i received a recall notice for a speed control deactivation switch. within two weeks i called the local ford dealership and they requested me to bring the vehicle in. i did, and upon arrival i was told that they did not have the part to fix/comply with the recall. i had a few choice words with the dealership and was told to wait for a call concerning the parts arrival. i waited, waited and waited, and still no call. i have contacted the local ford place three times since august of 2007. i still, as of november 25, 2007, do not have a repaired truck in accordance with the recall. all of the numbers on the recall sheet point to the local dealership and nothing else. i have no other avenue except this one. i just want my truck repaired for the safety of me and my family. please assist me in resolving this issue, as safety should be priority one in any auto makers mind. this is my first ford product and i am not pleased with their capacity to handle such a crisis as a fire within the vehicle. i hope that they understand the magnitude of this and the avenues they have provided show only a false sense of security within all ford products. please contact me as soon as possible with help in this area. thank you in advance. *tr

This has been a wonderful vehicle! it is a 2002 ford explorer equipped with automatic 4-wheel drive as well as full 4-wheel drive with high & low transfer case, 5-speed automatic, 4.6l v8 with double overhead cams, limited slip rear differential, towing package, leather seats, etc. however, this problem has the potential of causing harm or even death to its passengers and/or those in other cars and especially pedestrians. the problem has been extremely intermittent such that the technicians cannot experience it themselves. it usually happens on a cold day. the first time it did it, i was pulling a small trailer and i had driven a couple of miles to a plant nursery and on the way back as i neared my house, i drove down a long grade toward a stop sign. when i began to apply the brakes, the engine accelerated with such force that the transmission downshifted so that i had to stand on the brakes with both feet to keep from running clean across the road into a tree. it happened 2 more times that day. i then had it towed to the dealer and they replaced the idle valve. however, that did not fix the problem. it has happened several times sense. it has happened while traveling up a hill, down a hill, and on level ground. but it always happens when you apply the brakes. the last time it happened, it threw me out into a busy intersection but fortunately i was not hit. the time before that it tried to run over the little car in front of me but i was still able to stop it. i'm thinking about naming this suv christine. my brother has an early 2002 explorer equipped the same as mine and his has done it once. my mother has a 1998 crown victoria with this same engine and it has done it twice. there's no telling how many christines out there waiting to kill and there poor owners may not be totally aware of the problem. *jb

On date of accident, i was driving on 12 mile approaching intersection of orchard lake road. i'm coming to a complete stop, going about 1-2 mph, when the engine surged. my foot was on the brake, and i could hear and feel my engine accelerating, and to avoid rear ending the car in front of me, i turned the wheel and went up the curb, and finally stopped when i hit an interstate sign. the event took place in about five seconds. on the monday following the accident, i took my truck to jerome duncan ford and explained what happened. i also informed them that on 2 ocassions my car would not start. the diagnostic showed that my pcm need to be replaced. it could not bring up any missing codes for the surge of my engine. the pcm controls the engine and is the drive train. i don't believe for one second the defective pcm isn't the cause of the accident. i never relased my foot from the brake! my car is still at the dealer, and i refuse to have the pcm changed till a field engineer looks into it. i told them i don't want the truck back till they find what caused the surge, and that the car is unsafe to drive. the service drive manager said that this monday (2/25/02) he would take my truck out and wait for it to surge on him. they are not taking this as a serious matter! they told me i could start some legal action paperwork (where there will be and investigation, and a ford field engineer will look into it) and i told them that i was willing to start paperwork. they explained it could take up to 4 months, i told them that is not an issue, my truck is unsafe to drive. a detail i forgot to mention was the service manager started to say that they already changed my pcm, then told me they didn't. so called him 2 minutes after our conversation and told him that i did not want it changed until someone from ford looked at it. he said oh you don't want it changed, i was just going to have it changed. i said do not change it! *ak

Prior to the incident, i noticed that the accelerator pedal seemed somewhat loose. we were on the freeway in the l.a. area when i needed to accelerate quickly. as i did this the accelerator stuck and the vehicle surged. i was barely able to avoid rear ending a semi and avoid other vehicle on the congested freeway. the front seat occupant was able to lean under the dash and free the pedal. we pulled over and found our way to a mechanic. he advised that a small plastic piece had broken near the pedal. a bar that is attached to the system then stuck under the dash. he repaired this by bypassing the manufacturers system for less than $200.00. i took it to the ford dealer and they told me it would cost over $800.00 for labor and parts. i don't really want to repair it with the same parts if it could possibly recur. *jb

At highway speed of approximately 65 mph, i applied the accelorator and it stuck in the increased acceleration position. after a few frantic seconds (10 - 15 approx), i managed to release it by kicking it. at the time, i felt that it was possible that the floormat or carpeting may have been involved in the problem, but was not sure. i have not taken it to a shop because of that uncertainty. however, the current odi investigation convinced me of the strong possibility that this is a manufacturing defect.

While traveling at about 45 mph, the throttle on my 02 ford explorer suddenly would not return to idle. the cruise control was not on at the time. the cause was a plastic sheathing between the throttle cable and the exterior housing of the cable. i believe this material is used for lubrication? the material appeared to pull out of the housing and bunched up inside the driver footwell. when my foot was removed from the pedal, it would not return fully to idle because this tan material bunched up at the base of the housing where the cable comes through the firewall. by cutting the excess material away, i was able to get the pedal to respond properly. the dealer replaced the throttle cable under warranty.

I had just left work with my mother and noticed a smell of burning rubber or wires. we drove for approx. 4 blocks still smelling this. we rolled down the windows thinking it was coming from outside. i even turned off my air conditioning thinking it was pulling the odor in from outside. we then decided we should turn around and go back to my place of employment and have the mechanics check it out. i turned the corner and smoke starting coming out from under the hood. we then pulled over to call our wrecker. the smoke got worse, so we got out of the vehicle and moved away. we then called the fire department. after about 5 minutes flames started coming out from under the hood. then, there was a small explosion and there was a hole blown in the center of the hood close to the windshield. the flames were then shooting about 6 to 8 ft in the air. the fire department arrived and put the fire out. we have not yet heard if it is a total loss, but i'm sure it is. *nm
