Every time taking off from a stop. vehicle would go 3 mph for 15 seconds, would then jolt and lung forward fast. this happened all the way to work for 27 miles. when i contacted ford regarding this issue, they said they had no previous complaints. this is definately a safety issue. the vehicle almost hit the car in front of me several times. later the vehicle would not go into reverse. i was stranded in the parking lot until the vehicle in front of me had moved.

Was driving the truck and was coming to a stop, the vehicle jumped forward as if someone hit me from behind. it was rather aggressive and i almost rear ended a car in front of me at the light. luckly there was not a cross walk where a pedestrian could've been hit. this happens on a regular basis and in my opinion needs to be addressed asap, or ford will be dealing with a rather large law suit in their future. it is clear this is occuring with many others and enough is enough. something needs to be done about these transmission problems.

Forceful driveline bump while braking - below 10 mph
01/01/201040000
Transmission delays then lunges hard after placed into reverse. if a driver applies gas during this period, reverse will engage under sufficient power and lunge the vehicle 5 to 10 feet before it can be controlled. due to the number of other 2006 explorers with the same problem, we felt a safety complaint was in order. this vehicle had 40,000 miles when it started 3 years ago. its sporadic, sometimes no problem, sometimes annoying, sometimes it is scary. at its worse, shifting into reverse is delayed 2 to 5 seconds before a very harsh engagement. the speed the lever does not seem to impact this condition. it occurs about 30% of the time when regardless if the engine is cold or hot. this harsh engagement will spin the wheels and let out a loud squawk if on pavement. this engagement is very hard and feels like a minor collision. with experience, we have learned to hold the brakes hard until it engages to avoid the tire spin and keeping the vehicle from jumping. last week we gave everyone a scare when it didn't engage until after we let up on the brakes; by that time a mother and two children had walked behind the vehicle. the wheels spun and the vehicle jumped about a foot towards them even with some pressure still on the brakes. this problem also occurs going up thru the gears we will also experience a hard shift, as though someone hit the vehicle with sledge hammer. of all the shifts, this happens about 20% of the time now. cold or hot it does not seem to be a factor.

This vehicle has been jerking when i am going slow to the point as if someone hit me in the rear end of the vehicle. it is a very strong jerking sensation enough to frighten any reasonable individual. it also has been trying to accelerate when my foot was on the brake pedal and not in cruise control while going well below the minimum speed necessary to use the cruise control. the auto acceleration was while at 10 miles per hour or less and my foot was on the brake. this has become more and more frequent and i am worried it could be the computer, the transmission, the engine, or a control system not functioning properly. this has happened on multiple occasions with passengers in the vehicle. my parents were frightened when it happened. i am worried the thing may accelerate on its own and hurt another vehicle(s) or its passengers. there hasn't be a fire or crash yet but it is my fear that will happen unless this safety issue is meaningfully addressed. i already had certified auto repair of rockville md look at the vehicle and they told me they couldn't find anything wrong following a computer diagnostic. the jerking and auto acceleration are becoming more and more frequent and i am reporting this because i am concerned about the safety of my vehicle and others on the road. also, there are heavy virbations occuring during the idling process and i am not a mechanic but this may have something to do with the safety concerns on the vehicle. *tr

Sticks in park, bangs when shifted to reverse or other, slips out of gear when driving then engine will rev as if in neutral, sticks in park when on hill will not shift to drive or reverse ( out of park), when the vehicle looses gear it will rev and i am unable to accelerate and have to pull over to allow other vehicles by until i can get it to engage and go into gear otherwise the car just revs and goes nowhere. *tr

First incident occurred in early april 2012: my car was emitting a foul smell and overheating. upon inspection, it was discovered that my radiator was leaking. i turned my vehicle into ford and it was replaced. second incident occurred early-mid oct 2012: my car was jerking and the check engine light came on. it was taken to have the codes checked and it was indicated that i had 2-3 random miss-fires to my spark plugs. as this is normally an easy at-home fix, we were able to replace all the spark plugs. the issue with this incident was that in the process of removing the spark plugs, all but one broke in half. this is such a common problem that ford has designed and sells a specific tool to remove broken spark plugs. once the tool was purchased, i was able to fix the problem and my car no longer jerked and the check engine light went off. third incident occurred late nov 2012: vehicle started jolting and jerking excessively and check engine light came on. feels like transmission is not engaging gears properly. after much research, i found that this is a common and major safety issue regarding this vehicle. a safety recall needs to be done imminently. another issue, started in the end of 2011: when going from park to reverse or drive, stick shift will stick and i will have wiggle and pull hard to make it move. *tr

While trying to stop my vehicle suddenly accelerated and i had to put it in neutral to come to a stop. i pulled into a parking lot and shut the engine off and then started it up again and my engine revved at around 4000 rpm. the only way i could drive the vehicle home was to keep constant heavy pressure on the brakes. it always wanted to accelerate. *tr

No events leading up to failure. regular vehicle usage. after 5 years and 85000 miles, the transmission began clunking and hesitating to shift. when shifting into reverse or drive, the transmission jolts violently. this failure has not yet been corrected but has been diagnosed and a rebuilt transmission is on order. i am complaining now because so many similar reports have also been filed across the internet. upon seeing all the complaints i decided to lodge mine for more to see. this is a huge problem and is going to cost me 3500.00 to fix since the vehicle is no longer under warranty. *tr

Transmission started jerking while going down the road. it also began jerking when shifting into drive or reverse. i had originally thought maybe the fluid could be low but after seeing all of the people that this has happened to and no-one being able to get anything done i am considering looking into a class action suit for all of the owners. i also had problems with the traction control while on a vacation in the mountains. that made the engine rev but both rear wheels stopped moving on a blind hillside curve. ford needs to do something with these vehicles. *tr

When i went to shift into reverse would not move. immediately after that when tried to go forward was loud noise and i had to start forward in 3rd then shift into drive, little wrench appeared on dashboard. light went out and could then start out in drive without having to start in 3rd, however could no longer use reverse. took to transmission shop for evaluation and was told needed to have transmission rebuild as there was metal inside that was blocking valves. this is costing me $2400. had to fix as i am away from home on the other side of country and need it to go back home. *tr

Had complained about a hesitation in 2008, after several times at teh shop they did something to the throttle body. now the transmission slips in 3rd gear. at only 56785 miles this is terrible.

I have done a tremendous amount of research and notice that hundreds of others are having the same issue with the 2006 ford explorer. the transmission is giving numerous issues. hard to shift into reverse, roars, slips when changing gears, etc. the most disturbing problem is the transmission just jumps into gear without moving the gear shifter lever. the transmission stalls at red lights and then just jerks forward after several seconds. please help before there is an accident.

2006 ford explorer with less than 40,000 miles started to hesitate while driving on the freeway. after checking out all the fluids, i have noticed that the radiator (antifreeze) was way below level. i had to fill up the radiator with 1-1/2 gallons of coolant. i have taken my vehicle to the ford dealer every time for a oil change and was never told that the coolant was below level. at 44,000 miles, the leak was so bad that the radiator had to be replaced. just after a year later another failure to the radiator. had to replace the radiator a second time at 65,250 miles. this to me is a safety concern, if the radiator fails which could cause the engine to seize and possibly cause an accident.

2006 ford explorer is a lemon. thousand of problems across the nation. take one to a garage and the mechanics tell yoou which problem you have before you tell them, one of three. transmission failures, radiator replacement every 30000 miles and bad wheel bearing causing tires to come off during driving. lucky for me only two encountered so far. transmission failure. geeting on interstate and stalling in traffic is a danger to my family and other members of the motoring public. average cost for transmission repairs are 2500.00 to 4000.00. ford should have recalled these vehicles for safety issues.

The air bag malfunction light and wrench light both lite up on the dash. the car appeared to be running strange, shifting hard. after turning off the vehicle, it would not restart for approx 20 minutes. it would run fine for a day or so then the lights would come on again. took the car to the ford dealership, they drove it for approx 23 miles and the lights wouldn't come on. the battery tested low so they replaced the battery. when test driving after the battery replacement the wrench light and airbag light finally came on. they turned off the vehicle and it wouldn't start. after waiting 15 minutes to an hour it would start but the lights would come on again and once again after turning it off it wouldn't restart. they charged me an additional $759 to fix the instrument cluster (after around $300 for the battery and diagnostic testing). very frustrating - my 2006 only has 47k miles and is rarely driven.

I own a 2006 ford explorer and when i slow down to stop , i feel an awful jerk, just as someone is rear-ended me. for some reason, when i slow down to a stop light or sign, the transmission jerks the vehicle when shifting from 2nd down to 1st gear. this is definitely not what ford has made the explorer for, to shift with a sudden jerk from gear to gear. this is not really a safety issue, but causes real problems when you expect that you've purchased a great vehicle, but you actually didn't. i know that i'm not paying for this mistake or flaw in design of the 2006 ford explorer. i will fight this issue to the end as a martyr, and i'm not kidding about this. *tr

I recently purchased a 2006 ford limited edition explorer. within 24 hours of purchase i noticed that the vehicle would lunge forward while attempting to bring the suv to a complete stop. it feels as if you were just rear-ended! i purchased the extended warranty and have been told to bring the car to service. recent research has lead me to believe that this suv's model year has this same disturbing trend among vehicle across the usa. a thorough investigation needs to take place and a recall is my recommendation. consumers should not suffer for an obvious flaw on the behalf of a major manufacturer. *tr

Was driving home from work abs, traction and wrench light came on. a grinding noise started and felt like the brakes were being used even though i was touching the gas pedal. could have caused a accident if i wasn't driving in a neighborhood. we now have a car sitting in our drive broken down that we still owe over 15,000 for. calling ford monday to have it towed over. what i have read online, it looks like i am not the only one with this problem. i have a 5 yr old and a 2 yr old and want a car that is safe. the brakes failed a couple of years ago and ford told us there was nothing wrong. *tr

I have a 2006 explorer v-6 eddie bauer. my vehicle has 35,302 miles. i was out running errands on a saturday morning without any problems. then without warning the vehicle just started jerking as the car came to a complete stop. then as i began to drive (after the red light) i noticed the rpm's just seeming to go up and down as i was driving. i had about 5 more times that i needed to stop (stop signs) my vehicle before i got home and it continued to jerk as i came to a complete stop. i did not feel safe at all driving with my kids in the car. after the car first jerked when i went to stop the wrench illuminated stating powertrain problem. i started doing research on this problem and i have found hundred of the same or very similar problems. why has ford not looked into this problem, come up with a solution and issue a recall. *tr

While returning home from a routine shopping trip with my wife and 2 kids, the entire vehicle died completely in the middle of a busy street. the entire dash board went dark, the engine completely stopped running and as usual when the engine stops running the steering and brakes typically don't work too well. luckily the emergency brake worked like it was designed since we were going down hill at the time. i couldn't even turn on my hazard lights (what's the point of those when you can't use them to let others know you've now become a hazard)? i was able to restart the vehicle after a minute or two had lapsed and proceeded to move onward to our destination. this issue occurred when the transmission shifted from 2nd gear to 1st gear and going at a slow speed only 20mph. had this happened with my wife driving i'm positive there would have been a major accident! this is a 2006 ford explorer bought brand new off the show room floor and only has 10,356 miles on it. practically still brand new! i've done some research regarding this issue and have found that this isn't an uncommon problem with this model of vehicle. i've also found a few places that mention the cause of the issue as a throttle body malfunction. i'm looking to find if replacing the throttle body resolves the issue. if the issue is this common why hasn't ford been proactive and replaced the defective parts? our confidence in this car is now gone and we're afraid to take our children anywhere in this vehicle. *tr

I own a 2006 ford freestyle . on 7/7/08, the vehicle accelerated when i put it in gear (reverse) to back out of a parking space. i drove it a couple of blocks while keeping one foot on the brake and the other on the accelerator. at that point, i called for a tow to a ford dealer. on 7/8/08, the dealership diagnosed the problem as the throttle body needed to be replaced. i was informed the part was on back order until the end of august or the first of september. obviously, this part is in great demand or it would be available prior to that anticipated date. i am concerned because if i had been on the freeway when this occurred, it could have a tragic ending. how many other freestyles have had this problem? how many wrecks have occurred because of this failure of a part? my vehicle has approximately 45,000 miles, and it was purchased 8/06. i am requesting ford provide me with a vehicle (at no expense to me) to drive until my car is repaired. the repair is going to cost me $650. in the meantime, i am still having to make payments on the car. ford has offered me 10 days of rental with them paying only $27 per day. it is only fair they provide me with a comparable car rent free. obviously this part is in great demand--but i perceive that to be ford's issue--not mine. *tr

I own a 2006 explorer eddie bauer with 3000 miles on it. here is the problem, just before coming to a complete stop at stop light, stop sign or whatever, the engine revs to 1200-1500 rpms for just a brief second. i am not giving the car any gas to induce this occurrence. i have no idea why the car is doing this and neither does my local dealer. the service manager acknowledged that the car is in fact doing what i described above, but could not offer a fix. i tested another 2006 v6 explorer with 3 miles on it, to mine and the service manager surprise; it did the exact same thing as my truck. the service manager said he would look into the situation and call some of his engineer buddies to see if they could give him any information. i never heard back from him. i am also beginning to notice that i actually have to break harder to get the truck to come to a complete stop. this can not be normal, yet my ford dealer is insinuating nothing is actually wrong with the car. longer than necessary stopping distances and will lead to unnecessary collisions. because the ford motor company will not admit there is a problem with 2006 v6 explorers my dealer will probably do nothing to remedy the situation. i complained to ford motor company and never even received a confirmation that they received my email. i honestly believe that this is a recall situation. to my knowledge, all 2006 v6 explorers exhibit this problem of sudden acceleration, admittedly not by any stretch a powerful sudden acceleration but still it is a sudden acceleration. i am confident in my assessment because i have personally driven 2 explorers and different service rep claimed he drove yet another 06 explorer that did exactly the same thing. it seems to me that if ford has a design flaw in one of there cars they should design a fix for the problem and then repair the affected cars. *nm

Bought and own a 2006 ford explorer, eddie bauer purchased as used in 2008 with 19,000 miles on it. at 60,000 the transmission lurches, and slips....feels like someone is rear ending you. slow to respond when accelerating, makes clunking sound when putting into park or reverse. researched on the internet and there are thousands of complaints regarding the 2006 ford exlporer transmissions and aparently ford has issued no recall and offers no repair solution (unless you shell out $2500 for a new transmission). it is unbelieveble that a suv with 60,000 miles needs a new transmission!! i still owe just under $10,000 for this truck, where is the justice in buying american?? i would appreciate your comment to this on-going ford problem. please ford...... do something!! thank you!

Bought and own a 2006 ford explorer, eddie bauer purchased as used in 2008 with 19,000 miles on it. at 60,000 the transmission lurches, and slips....feels like someone is rear ending you. slow to respond when accelerating, makes clunking sound when putting into park or reverse. researched on the internet and there are thousands of complaints regarding the 2006 ford exlporer transmissions and aparently ford has issued no recall and offers no repair solution (unless you shell out $2500 for a new transmission). it is unbelieveble that a suv with 60,000 miles needs a new transmission!! i still owe just under $10,000 for this truck, where is the justice in buying american?? i would appreciate your comment to this on-going ford problem. please ford...... do something!! thank you!

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford explorer. the contact stated that the vehicle was in park and when attempting to shift into reverse, the vehicle exhibited an unusual dropping noise and began to jerk violently. in addition, when starting the engine the vehicle would often lunge forward abnormally. when braking, the vehicle would also jerk violently as if someone had crashed into the rear of the vehicle. the contact also stated that she was unable to see out of the passenger rearview mirror when the second row seat was upright because the headrest was obstructing her view. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer several times who was unable to duplicate the failure. the contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the current mileage was approximately 109,000 and the failure mileage was approximately 38,000.

At 65,000 miles, my 2006 ford explorer limited automatic transmission needed to be replaced. the car suddenly started to buck and it wouldn't change gears. the mechanic was told by ford that there has been 17 adjustments on my transmission since it went out. i had to pay $2600. for a new rebuilt . transmission!!! the vehicle was well maintined and i have proof ot the service history. this should not happen at 65,000 miles! also my radiator has been leaking for last couple of years. i have been holding out on replacing it, but i understand that's another popular problem with this vehicle

I took my 2006 ford explorer to the ford dealership for maintenance. the service personel found the tranmission pan heavily corroded just above an exhaust cross over pipe. transmission fluid had been dripping onto the exhaust cross over pipe. there is approximately a 1.5 foot section of the exhaust cross over pipe that is covered with blackened transmission fluid. the heaviest corrosion is exactly above and parellel to the exhaust cross over pipe. the transmission pan actually has small holes in it just above the exhaust cross over pip. the exhaust cross over pipe is about 1 1/4 inches below the transmission pan. as a result of the exhaust cross over pipe and the transmission pan being so close to each other, the constant heat from the exhaust cross over pipe has cause the transmission pan to corrode, rust and leak transmission fluid right on the exhaust cross over pipe. this is a fire hazard. the dealership is replacing the tranmission pan. ford motor company has denied coverage of this under my extended warranty plan. i am currently seeking a remedy from ford. the old part is available.

My 2006 explorer at 58,000 miles the tranmission had to be overhalled as there was slipping when shifting. ever since the power train light keeps cominging on and off. when the light comes on there is a jerking that occurs. ever since i purchased the vehicle i have had nothing but troubles with the power tran. ford needs to perform a recall. about ever 38 miles the power train light comes on then off again.

I have a 2006 ford explorer and it has almost 60,000 miles. the car has been jerking very hard while shifting between gears. this has been going on for the past month. we took it to our local ford dealer who we have had service our cars for many years. upon diagnosis, they told us that we needed a new transmission. to repair the broken parts, they stated it would cost more to repair it versus getting a whole new transmission. both the car dealer and we were very surprised a car this new and with low miles needed a whole new transmission. we research the internet to see if others have had the same issues. we found this seems to be a very common repair for the 2006 explorer. here is one of the websites that discusses this specific repair.... http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2006/ford/explorer/automatic+transmission

Vehicle shifts hard and jerks when shifting from park to reverse/drive to drive. multiple sites on the internet reveal the same or similar complaints from hundreds of owners driving the 2006 ford explorer. dealer requested ford assist with the repair of my explorer and as in many other cases, ford has refused. this model year explorer obviously has multiple manufacturing defects. these defects need to be recalled and repaired at ford's expense.

The transmission in my 2006 ford explorer is a safety issue. shifting from reverse to drive can take from 1 to 10 seconds to shift into gear. i am surprised i have not been in an accident from this defect. there are times when it shifts into gear that it gets stuck in a higher gear which affects acceleration from a dead stop. the only solution is to power down the vehicle and restart it. the transmission also lurches on stops, making it feel as if you have been rear-ended. i cannot believe that nobody has forced ford to recall these transmissions. i cannot believe that owners safety can be placed in this amount of danger and still not have a recall.

I bought a 2006 explorer and have had numerouis issues.the first major issue was when my car would occasionally stall or die out. i brought the car in and was told they couldn't ind anything wrong. i brought it back again because it stalled on the hwy while i was iong 65 mph and the car died. i was unable to pull off to the side because the car would not steer. i got the car to the dealer and was told it was my radiator. they fixed this but i explained a month later that the car was still stalling along with accelerating on its own and the volume on the radio would go up also on its own. they were unable to find a resolution. i tried to trade the car in and was told no. i cried and explained my safety concerns for my children but they do not care. finally the car was not any better but started to stall more often and even began to lurch forward almost causing me numerous accidents. the last time it stalled was on the railroad tracks which was so devastating to me and my children. i brought the car in and was told after an 1 hour and a half they couldn't find anything wrong. i refused to leave and suggested they keep looking because the car is not safe. the came back after another hour and told me that they called ford and they suggested a part to replace but couldn't garuntee it because they are not sure that would work. i said not to keep looking. after 3 hours at the dealer they had to bring me home and drive my car around with a computer attached. they called and said after driving the car for 57 miles it died on them and they could barely get it back to the dealer. they said it was the throttle body and it would cost est 448 and charged me 100 dollars for them looking at it. why should i pay for somethen that could have been fixed under warrenty if they would have listened to my concerns? ford is now putting my children at risk of possibly getting injured in an accident. i can no longer drive the car because it now stalls every two minutes ever since the dealer

2006 ford explorer with a defective gear shift. consumer states that the repair work was made for the recall. then was further advised that this repair would not fix defect and consumer would be responsible for paying for the repair. *kb the consumer stated the vehicle was a part of a customer satisfaction program. the program was to repair the transmission gear shift lever from getting stuck in the park position, by replacing the gear shift lever circuit board free of charge. prior to notification, the consumer noticed the gear shift would periodically and temporarily become stuck in park. the consumer had the repair performed. the first circuit board replacement did not fix the defect. so a second circuit board was installed and seemed to fix the problem. however, a month later, the gear shift lever became stuck in park several times. the consumer contacted the dealer, and was informed the repair would not be covered. the consumer was informed other parts within the gear shift would need to be replaced. the consumer was informed the repairs were outside the limits of the recall. *jb

Have a 2006 ford explorer limited v8. when in stop & go traffic car lunges sometimes lunging so hard felt as though i was rear ended. bought the car in dec 2008 had only 16,000 miles and was certified pre-owned (although dont think the dealer did anything to the vehicle). about 1 month after purchasing vehicle had to bring it in because change oil light went on. the person i called said they couldnt find the record in the computer. only when i went in and let them know it was cpo & oil was suppose to have been changed and i didnt think it was done.the service person left the front desk for about 15 min and came back only to find the records in their system. at that time i complained about the lunging & jerking and was told it was because i was not used to the 4 wheel drive that kicks in automatically. once spring came had the same problem and called the service dept at the dealer i purchased the car from i was told unless it does this all the time it would be a waste of my money to bring it in for service. as of todays date it is still doing the same thing and i have become aware of so many other people with the exact same problem, why is ford not fixing the problem. this is a safety issue. more than once i have almost rear ended the vehicle in front of me luckily i had my foot on the break. hopefully ford will do the right thing and do a recall. i am sure they are aware of the problem !

Vehicle was purchased in february 2010. when placing the transmission in reverse, the vehicle lunges backward very violently. the problem occurs intermittently and without warning. the vehicle was taken to a transmission shop 4/10/2010 and there are pieces of the clutches sitting on the bottom of the transmission pan. the transmission now requires a complete rebuild. the previous owner told us that the vehicle had just gone to a ford dealer for a recall repair on the shift lever and there was nothing said about the lunging.

Just recently noticed my 06 ford explorer having unexpected engine surges. went to stop at an intersection and it felt like the vehicle was fighting me to stop. when the light turned green i gave it a little gas however the vehicle begin to maintain that speed like i had the cruise control on. i purposely did not give the vehicle any gas and saw that it just kept accelerating. finally after breaking out i began to brake and again felt the vehicle accelerating. since no one was in front of me i wanted to see what the vehicle did if i gave it a little gas in which it made a popping sound and did not respond when i gave it more gas but the engine still was running. i pulled over and put the vehicle in park. i tried to rev the engine but it did not respond. a wrench light came on during this process. i turned the vehicle off then on again in which it seemed there was nothing wrong. as i drove home it did fine except when stopped at the same intersection it died. i started it again and had no problems and i did make it home. after some research i found multiple similar problems like this with this vehicle however no recalls have been issued. i have an 8 year old son and do not feel comfortable driving this vehicle. at this time we cannot afford to get this fixed. what are my options at this point other than making a complaint? please help! i'm a hard working american that likes to buy vehicles made in the usa however we as a nation need to help out with these issues so we all can continue to support american car purchases. thanks *dt

We bought a 2006 ford explorer new in 2006. after three years and 50,000 miles the transmission started shifting very hard from park to reverse to drive. now, at 61,000 miles, the transmission is not responding when pressing the throttle while car is already in motion. if you let your foot off of the throttle and then press the throttle again the engine just revs up for several seconds before shifting into gear. very dangerous when merging on or off the interstate. ford dealership says it needs a new transmission. *tr

Bought 2006 explorer new. around 14,000 miles engine problems started, have taken car in to ford dealer where car was purchased about 7 times for basically same problem ~ engine light / car engine lunging . mechanics did different things; replaced one defected part while under warranty, reset computer, but problem always came back. sometimes happening before i made it home. some times months later. now they think maybe it could be the throttle body. *tr

When coming to a stop the transmission will bang into gear and it feels like you are getting hit from behind. also have had bucking and the transmission shifts up and down and slips. was told the bucking and slipping is due to a lean reading in the computer. told to change spark plugs. took it to a mechanic and three of the eight plugs broke off as they were trying to take them out. the spark pug are made by motorcraft which is ford. they had to buy a kit to extract them and it cost an additional $300.00 to change eight plugs which i had already purchased at a cost of $68.00. it didn't fix the erratic shifting at first. still shifts very hard from 1st to second and acted up shortly after getting it back. *tr

I bought a 2006 ford xlt explorer with apx. 17,000 miles. i had it for about 3 months it had about 19,000 miles. i drive it about 100 miles to a convention and by the time i got there and pulled into a parking lot the vehicle started shifting hard, jerking and lunging. it was making a loud banging sound and felt like the transmission was going to fall out. i took it to ford, they did some work on the transfer case and replaced a module. about a month and a thousand miles later, it started doing it again. took it back to ford and they did some more work. the shifter lever was replaced. later it started doing it again. i have taken it back several times and the vehicle continues to have the problem. it doesn't do it every day but does do it several times a week, some days are worse than others. as time goes by it seems to get worse and happen more often. sometime when i put the vehicle in reverse there is a delay to engage and one morning it cause me to back into another vehicle. it also has a cracked running board. *tr

Last night the car was in drive but would keep kicking out of gear... i would push the gas, the engine would rev, but the car wouldn't go anywhere. i even rolled backwards down a hill on a highway and almost hit another car! i had to shut the car off, and restart it in order to get it to back in gear. this happened 10-15 times in a 20 minute drive! i was nervous to even drive it home! it is at the ford dealership now... i will keep you posted... will never buy an american car again! it is completely unsafe to drive! *tr

I have a 2006 ford explorer xlt v6 with 55k miles on it. i bought this vehicle with approximately 30k miles on it and within about 2,000 miles of the purchase i started noticing shifting problems. for some reason the vehicle seems to shift fine, but has a mind of its own. most vehicles shift 1st, 2nd, 3rd, so on per the speed and shifts to assist gas mileage as well. well, my explorer will shift into what i believe is 5th gear at 30 miles per hour and its sounds like its bogging down and there is almost no acceleration at all! as well it will shift into 5th when climbing a steep hill and when it finally does downshift it makes a clunk noise and drops into 2nd gear causing the engine to rev way up and it suddenly feels like your taking off in an airplane. if you let off the gas to slow down it drops right back into 5th gear again and then the story repeats itself. i have taken the vehicle to the dealer 3 times now and the only changes made were a tcm update and adaptive learning strategy memory clearing and neither of those things fixed the issue at all. i notice as days go on that the problem is getting worse and i never get a good answer. upon doing some research i have found that many people have had the same transmission related issues from lunging, to clunking, to severe shifting delays. i'm worried that my transmission or drivetrain will experience some kind of critical failure and ford wont take any responsibility. i contacted ford directly and the only answer i got from a csr was, unfortunately we have no comment to assist you at this time. i would really like someone to look into this issue for a possible transmission or drivetrain recall. *tr

2006 ford explorer automatic transmission has a jolt when it downshift at stopping. it feels like one is being rear ended. this is a very common problem with these transmissions. ford tried to reprogram the car, but it doesn't fix the problem. problem occurs in about 1 out of 10 stops. the distraction is a safety issue as one stops to try to figure out why this happened. ford needs a better solution to this common problem.

*tr

When coming to a stop, transmission jerks and it feels like you are getting rear-ended. lots of complaints about this on various websites. started right after car was bought, ford said they could not find anything wrong, so we have been dealing with it... but it is getting worse, and i'm afraid i will get stuck with a costly repair. *tr

2006 ford explorer sporadically does not speed up when you hit the accelerator. ford apparently knows about this issue and has a software fix in place that you must proactively contact them on...in other words, you have to have the problem on the road and call them before they will do anything about it. it occurs everytime we drive the car, however, it is not consistent when it occurs or how often...at times it happens the entire time the car is being driven. the consequences are that you can be driving 10mph or 70mph and when you hit the accelerator, the car engine will rev up much like you were sitting in neutral (i.e. it does not speed up) and after a few seconds will kick into gear/engage and start speeding up. this seems very dangerous if you were not expecting this to occur and were trying to pass a car with possible oncoming traffic. this issue should require ford to recall the vehicles before somebody gets injured, if they have not already been. *tr

Bought a 2006 explorer in dec. 06 and have since noticed several problems with it. the most concerning is when the car lunges/jerks forward when shifting from park/reverse to drive. it is now also starting to show a loss of power when shifting through gears as the engine revs but goes no where. i have taken it to the dealer for the lungin/jerking and they told me they could not feel it. it happens sporadically so this does not surprise me. i have recently been noticing this revving and loss of power when shifting gears (it's an automatic). i have taken it to two mechanics both of with agreed that the revving noise is coming from the fan clutch, not sure what this is, but could not diagnose the loss of power. i'm sure that this a transmission problem, after reading the hundreds of complaints on www.carcomplaints.com. it appears at this time that the only thing that has been offered to the customer like me, is reprogram the computer which runs $150. this reprogram seems to help only sometimes. the alternative would be to replace the entire transmission which is very costly and funding is not easy to come by these days. *tr

I took my wife's explorer to the dealership and described the issue with the vehicle popping into gear late, or delaying before it goes into gear. i can even feel it when it changes gears when driving. sometimes more sudden than other times. they said they knew exactly what it is....so they kept my car for 6 hours to tell me that i owed them $89 for telling me what's wrong, and then told me its $1,300 to fix it. they said sorry about your luck, no recall yet, so you have to pay for it yourself. i would be happy to pursue this further... this is dangerous, and should be addressed by ford before people are hurt. *tr

While in park vehicle rolled backwards down incline almost striking person at bottom of driveway luckily he jumped out of the way and it struck side of his truck causing damage, driveway had been snow covered but cleared down to asphalt, had been parked approximately 10-15 minutes prior to this happening . this has since occurred multiple times in varying weather conditions, including rainy, snowy, and sunny with dry pavement. the vehicle has rolled forward and back, with and without the parking brake set, which the parking brake it takes longer and rolls slower; each time there after striking vehicle parked closely as a precaution, wheels get chocked now when parked on incline to prevent suv from rolling. ford has checked multiple times and not found any issues and fixed or replaced nothing saying it is because of the rear differential not a containing limited slip gearing. *tr

When the car stops, starts or drives slow... it jerks when changing gears from 1st through 3rd, both up- and down shifting. it has also started to slow (for no apparent reason) when driving at a steady speed on the highway (going around 65-70 miles an hour), i have had mullinax ford look at the transmission 5 times now, and it is still there. currently i am involved in a lemon law case trying to get ford to buy my car back. they are stating that there is no significant problem with my transmission and at the same time saying that it is due to abuse or neglect on my part ???? i can only suggest that others take the same route - the more the better to get the attention of ford to completely fix this problem. i also have had my compass worked on (did not show anything or just two lines) , the gear shifter replaced (wouldn't shift out of 'p'), the rear window replaced (due to water leak) and the air conditioning system replaced as there was something bend ???. i also have experienced that when work has been done on the car the breaks worked differently afterwards. in my opinion the 2006 ford explorer is a lemon. *tr

My 06 explorer has been lurching extremely hard from 1st to 2nd and vice versa. its to the point that when stopping i am coming literally within an inch of hitting another car b/c the car stops and then lurches forward. my car is also revving up for no reason at around 3000-4000 rpm when i don't even push on the gas, or barely tap it! i am seriously concerned about the safety of myself and the safety of others while driving my suv. i came across this website today: carcomplaints.com and found that there were 66 other complaints about the same exact problem with the 2006 explorer models. ford is not taking any procedures into getting the vehicles recalled. i don't feel safe driving my truck, i don't understand why there isn't a recall. the trucks are still considered very new and yet they are lurching and having a huge transmission problem. when i took my truck to the ford dealer in miami, fl they told me it was a brake problem and replaced my brakes, yet when i pulled out of the parking lot the problem was not fixed! that was in nov 2007. i am now stationed in anchorage alaska at elmendorf afb and have made an appt with the ford dealer here on monday. from what i have read there is no permanent fix out there for this problem, everything is temporary. something has got to be done to get these trucks off the road. obviously we are all driving hazards waiting to happen!! my truck is jolting worse than ever and i am seriously concerned. *tr

Consumer complaint: odi case number: 10185415 in follow-up to the above case, i have been reading the subsequent complaints and read with disgust that alot of those people writing now bought the 2006 explorer as used. we were fortunate to have turned ours in under the lemon law for all of the same reasons listed in the other complaints but within a day or two of turning the vehicle in, there was a big colored picture of my explorer in mathews currie ford's used car ad. my problems were just being resold to some unsuspecting customer who thought they were getting a deal on a good low mileage car. it's is a shame that ford is still allowed to sell those explorers and they take no responsibility for selling defective vehicles. *tr

We own a 2006 ford explorer, and its transmission slips, gets confused during downshifts, and now has developed a lurch forward when coming to a stop. i had it in the dealership, when the shift lever broke and i was told that this is normal but ford is working on a program for the computer that they are releasing in mid november. first of all, if this is normal why is this the second attempt at creating a fix for a non-existent problem with a normally functioning transmission. ford instructed the dealerships to let it be until the new program comes out in november. where exactly does that leave the consumer, i have a transmission that had has been slipping in gear and mis-shifting for thousands of miles and a 60,000 mile warranty. if this doesn't become more of a safety concern, which i am afraid it will, i will likely have increased transmission problems down the road because of it. plus, nevermind this current model explorer will now have a significantly lower resale value as these types of complaints increase. please help! this was a large investment to make, and now i will have to pay the consequence for fords failure. *tr

 (1) i have owned my 2006 ford explorer for one year and four months. there are approximately 21,000 miles currently on it. it has had a lunging problem starting weeks after i purchased it. i have taken it into two separate ford dealers in attempts to have it fixed for a total of six times. they have attempted to update the computer on two separate occasions. each time it is fixed for a couple of weeks up to a couple of months, however, the clunking and jerking once again show. i believe that they unplug the battery each time it is taken in, allowing the computer to forget its adaptive learning. (2) when i take off from a stop it hesitates and then slams into gear causing the vehicle to accelerate unpredictably. furthermore, when stopping it feels like it is freewheeling in between first and second gear with an abrupt stop and a jerk that causes a violent jerking of the vehicle. the feeling it provides is one of being rearended. (3) the only thing that has been done is to reprogram the computer and unhooking the battery so the computer forgets its adaptive learning. this is a quick fix for ford and does not solve the problem. *tr

The transmission of the 2006 explorer eb that i purchased from vista ford, has had ongoing intermittent shifting inconsistencies from the day i purchased it that cause the cars transmission to frequently kick and have a startling and car-shaking bump or thunk? when braking just before the vehicle comes to a stop. sometimes when it does not occur at all. mostly, it occurs in various degrees from subtly to strongly (on a scale of 1 to 10). sometimes it occurs so strongly that the entire car noticeably and violently shudders or lurches, and the car jumps forward as it stops. i have to be careful how close i am to the intersection or to the bumper of the car in front of me in case it does this, potentially causing a hazardous situation or accident. the car has also developed a similar shifting inconsistency upon acceleration from a standstill as it shifts (presumably) into second gear. sometimes it is such a severe jolt that my head snaps back and hits the headrest of the seat. the dealership has attempted unsuccessfully on four occasions to correct this defective behavior. the dealership has reprogrammed the computer program for the transmission with two separate fixes which have had absolutely no affect to correct the problem. these problems occur with such frequency that i feel unsafe in the vehicle, and i don't feel secure when driving it due to the inconsistent and erratic behavior of the transmission. i think that the vehicle is mechanically unsound, as a result and that the transmission is likely to fail altogether at some point, or possibly cause an accident caused by the sudden acceleration. *tr

On several occasions when shifting into reverse the vehicle was extremely hesitant & eventually would lunge backwards while making a loud clack as it jumped into gear. another time i started my car & it lunged into park as if it was never in park completely before i shut off and exited the vehicle prior to this. we all know you cant take the keys out of the ignition w/o it being in park,so explain this! after numerous complaints to my dealership they find a problem(a factory defect, not one caused by me)they replaced parts and now only a few months later i am having the same problems all over again. only now my problems are worse. while driving instead of shifting my car just revs real high & goes nowhere. this lasts anywhere from 15-45 seconds & then stops. it also is hesitant when shifting from gear to gear. i have my car serviced regularly and dont drve it hard,i should not be experiencing these problems at all!!! i am a very, very unhappy ford owner. i paid $38,000 cash for this vehicle the day i bought it & have had nothing but problems since, only regrets. *jb

2006 ford explorer eddie bauer v8 with six speed auto. purchase vehicle used with 17k miles. problems with transmission 1-2 weeks into ownership. the vehicle has issues as to what gear to be in and will lunge forward or clunk into gear. this happens frequently when coming to a stop. also, when driving the vehicle it sometimes hesitates when shifting into higher gears and will clunk into gear. in one instance i tried to pull into traffic and attempted to accelerate and the vehicle would not shift in order to gain speed. the engine revved up but the transmission did not engage. i have had the car to the dealership 2 times for this problem. they have re programmed the computer the first time. the symptoms seemed to disappear. a week later, it came back. the second time, the tech told me that it is a normal condition and that the tranny gets confused as to what gear to be in. the delayed and harsh shifting is dangerous and someone is going to get seriously hurt as a result of it happening. the random shifting into first when coming to a stop should prove real interesting on the ice and snow... *jb

I purchased a 2006 eddie bauer explorer in june of last year and have had transmission issues with it since i hit 1000 miles. i have had it into the dealership 4 times and they have adjusted, replaced a computer, did other transmission work and the vehicle still demonstrates the same issue. this problem happens during shifting and on slow down to stop. the vehicle jerks forward and shifts very rough between gears. ford motor corp has refused to assist any further and has asked me to bring my vehicle back again for the 5th time. this situation is very dangerous as the vehicle does jerk forward when you stop. i have small children and this has put me into a situation where i feel like my children are unsafe in this vehicle due to the potential to rearend someone if the car fails to stop properly. where is ford when it comes to safety and consumer loyalty??? this was my third ford purchase and will most likely be the last. a colleague of mine also purchased this same vehicle and is experiencing the same issues. *jb

2006 ford explorer eddie baurer- within 12 hours of purchasing the car, the starter caught on fire, car was out of service 1 week. transmission hesitated from a cold start especiallly bad when pulling out into traffic. engine roared at times, sounded like a jet taking off. dealer said this was normal, it was the engine fan ???? car lurched forward when starting on several occasions. at first service dept agreed there was a problem with 8 cylinder transmission and that they were no fixes but then the ford rep got involved and suddenly they couldn't find any problems with the car. they suggested that our only recouse was to go thru the lemon law which we did. it was a long drawn out process but after 6 months of dealing with the situation, the lemon arbitration rulled in our favor and ford was required to buy back the explorer. i had a ford expedition for 9 years and loved it but after this fiasco with the explorer and ford's refusal to stand behind their product, i will not ever buy another ford. i now have a toyota 4runner and couldn't be happier. while it doesn't have some of the special features of the explorer, the piece of mind of knowing that it will actually go when i pull out into traffic is immeasureable. to those still having the problems, i would suggest the lemon law.

Our 2006 eddie bauer v-8 automatic transmission has approx 6k miles on it and since the very first day there has been a hesitation when shifting. from park to reverse and from reverse into drive. there is a significant lag time from engaging the transmission to movement and is usually associated with a rather large clunk. this is out 4th explorer and enjoy the styling but am very concerned about this obvious engineering flaw. it appears ford is aware of it but has no fix. *jb

I have a 2006 ford explorer, v8 6 speed. it has been to the dealer three times for a fix on the transmission. when downshifting between 2nd and 1st, the vehicle lurches forward or there is a very large shift in momentum that pushes the car forward while stopping or occasionally after stopped. this actually pushed my car forward into an icy intersection. ford is aware of the issue, but has failed to come up with a fix. my vehicle is not the only one with the problem, and this only compounds transmission issues and vibration i had on my last two (2003 and 2004) explorers. i love this particular vehicle, but will likely not purchase another explorer....too many vibrations and transmission problems. *jb

I purchased a brand new 2006 ford explorer limited with the new 6-gear 8 cylinder engine. during downshift to a stop, the truck would literally lurch forward as the engine jerked into the proper gear. after repeated visits (in excess of 5) to the dealership, and replacements of valves and a whole new transmission, the problem is not as evident, but continues nonetheless. new problems have also developed, such as jerking movements on take off (as if i were pressing and releasing the gas), delayed response when pressing the accelerator on take off, as well as an engine roar on acceleration not typical of an engine fan ; none of these issues were corrected when brought to the attention of the dealer's service department (ernie haire ford). i have been following a forum on edmunds.com where other consumers are having the exact same issues; the computer was simply reprogrammed and expected to fix the problem with no further options available, since an attempt to lemon law the vehicle would result in a lot of lawyers and litigation and paperwork, as expressed by the service manager at ernie haire, and would probably wind up being a waste of my time and money if the company couldn't find anything wrong with the vehicle during the process. i did not have these mechanical issues with my '97 explorer. *nm

2006 ford explorer eddie bauer v-8 problems with transmission 3-4 months into ownership. the vehicle will jump into gear and will lunge forward. this happens frequently when coming to a stop. also, when driving the vehicle it sometimes hesitates when shifting into gears and will clunk into gear. last week i was taking my daughter and her friend to girl scouts and i pulled into traffic and attempted to accelerate and the vehicle would not shift in order to gain speed. the vehicle coming in my direction had to slam on his breaks to avoid hitting our vehicle. i have had the car to the dealership 5 times for this problem. they have re programmed the computer, replaced the solenoid pack, cleaned the valve body, and have cleared the memory in the pcm numerous times. still no fix.... the delayed and harsh shifting is dangerous and someone is going to get seriously hurt as a result of it happening. *nm

We have a 2004 ford explorer that is still under warranty with an unresolved automatic transmission/accelerator problem. the problem is a delayed engagement when the vehicle shifts from a low to a higher gear, and even more delay and aggressive shift from park to reverse. the shifting into reverse is so pronounced that it delays, then bangs into reverse, and suddenly lunges backward. this is a dangerous condition and could easily result in property damage or even injury to others. *nm

2006 ford explorer. has been to the shop three times for transmission trouble. took the mechanic for a ride to be sure he felt the problem. he agreed that there was definitely a problem with the shifting. the car jumps into 2nd gear causing the car to lurch forward. reprogrammed the computer car was better for two days then it resumed its problem again. ford dealer had car for two weeks this time again said they could not find a problem. paid 40,000 + for this car. something needs to be done. *jb

Our 2006 4.6, v8 6 speed transmission explorer has been in five time for repairs to the transmission starting at just over 900 mile to now with 2400 miles. we have experienced serious shifting problems with the transmission. these have ranged from delayed 1-2 and or 2-3 shift, high rev, delayed shift with hard down shift and severe jerking. this resulted in three days of back pain. they have reprogrammed the transmission, replaced the valve assembly and the complete transmission and we are still having problems. *jb

I feel my 2006 4.6,v8, xlt explorer is unsafe because of the transmission hesitation when accelerating from a stop. you try to judge distance to pull out on a street and when you step on the gas it doesn't go! it has a pause and then goes. the dealer has 'recalibrated' the computer and transmission response three times now! the date included is the last time it was done. *jb

This is a new 2006 v8 6 speed ford explorer which has had serious problems with the transmission since i purchased it on dec 10, 2005. i have taken it to the original dealer sheehy ford of gaithersburg md five times and they have not been able to fix the problem. this past friday at an intersection i stepped on the accelerator and the vehicle would not move so i pressed harder and it was if it skipped a gear and then the car jerked forward at a higher then normal speed and i almost lost control of the vehicle. *jb

This transmission exhibits a hard shift at near 0 mph when pressing the brakes to slow to a stop, to the point that the vehicle lurches forward approximately one foot and could if you are not hard on the brake, there is a possibility of striking close objects, other vehicles or persons. this is an ongoing problem that is unpredictable, repeatable and very frightening. fords response is that they do not recognize this as a problem and have no fix for these symptoms. this problem did not exist until the vehicle had approximately 4000 miles and it has become worse with time. *jb

Abs light & traction control light came on. taken to dealer and found left rear axle assembly and tone ring had to be replaced. was covered under extended drive train warranty at $100. deductable. after having been in the automotive repair business for over thirty years i know this type of failure should not occur in normal vehicle operation in the mileage on this vehicle.

*tr

New 2006 ford explore vibration at 45 & 60 mph shakes suv. during test drive dealer thought the problem was a flat spot on a tire from sitting on the lot. after driving the suv for several days the vibration continued. returned to dealer for correction. suv received new drive shaft, and two rear 1/2 shafts. problem sill exist. after testing couple other explorer on lot was determined that they all had this same vibration. ford is aware of the problem but describes it at normal. i hate to tell them that this is not normal. the suv has problems with this vibration and if you let off the gas then reapply as if you had to break quick then accelerate the suv struggles to regain power and has a more sever vibration. if i had know that this was typical with this unit i would not have purchased it. i thought it was a flat spot on the tire as the salesman thought. a very concerned and unhappy ford customer. *nm
