On wednesday 2/5/13 i was driving on highway going about a constant speed of 55 mph. all of a sudden i see a warning pop up that says power steering assist fault and my steering wheel locked. even to make slight curves in the road where extremely difficult. i barely had time to pull over on the side of the road in traffic before getting hit. also, my turn signals were not functioning. i turned the vehicle off and the warnings went away. however as i started my route to get home the same thing happened again. *tr

I own a 2011 ford explorer, i have had numerous failures to the electronic power steering assist. first time this happened i was along at about 65 mph and the steering wheel locked up and the warning lights started flashing traction control power steering assist failures . steering wheel becomes very difficult to move and steer car. this has happened 1/2 dozen times, each time i slowly steer the car to a safe stop turn off the car and restart the car and error clears out. this last time it occurred as i was turning left from a left turn lane when suddenly in the m idle of the turn my power steering locked up. fortunately i was traveling at very low speed, but i was not able to steer car and went onto oncoming lane again i was fortunate not to hit anyone. however, this time the problem did not clear itself and the car is at the local ford dealer for 8 days now. the service manager says its a gear and ford does not have it in stock!!! *tr

Pulling into a parking lot off of a highway power steering froze and was difficult to move. turned vehicle off and on again but still had same issue and could not turn steering wheel. turned power off, took key out of ignition and got out of vehicle. went back in and restarted vehicle and steering seemed to be normal again. dropped off at dealer the next day. it has been 10 weeks and it still has not been fixed, part on backorder and fearful of what will happen after it is fixed. dealer and ford regional customer service manager [xxx] tells me there is national back order on part. if this is the case this must be a big problem. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

On the morning of september 25th, my wife was driving her 2011 ford explorer awd limited to work and the epas power steering shut off. she was luckily close to work and not driving in any curvy terrain, and was able to park the vehicle with great exertion. i came out and switched cars so that i could drive it to the dealer. the epas was working again when i turned on the car. i brought it to the dealer where they saw the fault when they hooked the car to their system. as of today, 11/14/12, ford still has possession of our vehicle, waiting for replacement parts. *tr

Driving on a mountain road, warning messages appeared - power steering assist failure and advance trac control fault. the vehicle lost all power steering assist. with much effort (extremely hard to steer!), i pulled the vehicle to the side of the road and shut it off. when i restarted, the power steering returned and after a few seconds the advance trac warning message went off. took vehicle to ford dealer (benson ford easley sc). they found problem codes and performed a software update that ford told them would correct the problem. one month later, on 6/18/2012, the power steering assist again failed. this time in my driveway. again the steering assist returned after restarting the car. took the vehicle again to benson ford. trouble codes were found and this time the fix was a new steering gear and rack assembly. availability of the part was initially a problem but the dealer was able to locate a part two days later. the car has not had a recurrence to date ( 20125 miles) i consider this a serious safety issue as the effort required to steer the car without the assist is extreme and likely beyond the ability of some drivers. *tr

Driving around a fairly sharp curve of 2-lane country highway with no shoulder and deep ditches at about 60 mph when car suddenly pulled to the right. felt like i had a flat tire pulling me off the road. looked at instrument panel and saw lights indicating power steering assist fault and loss of traction control. very hard to keep vehicle on roadway, but luckily with no one behind me, i let my speed reduce as i assessed the situation. got vehicle off the road and started reading owner's manual. after shutting the vehicle off for just a few minutes, i restarted it to find the dashboard warnings were cleared. confirmation from the manual said that steering may reset after a restart. power steering was restored. a call to the dealership resulted in them telling me it was probably just a fluke incident and to continue on my trip, but to bring it by the next day when back in town. when the dealership checked the computer codes, they would not release the vehicle to me because of its danger to drive. this was almost 2 months ago and they still cannot tell me when the part will be in for my vehicle repair. ford tells them i am on a list, but can't tell them where on the list. dealership claims there is no recall, but there is either a very long list waiting for this part or ford can't figure out what is wrong and why it is failing in order to make them correctly. after waiting 4 months after ordering to finally get my vehicle, you'd think ford would have gotten it right before letting them go out. *tr

(my wife as on her way to our daughter's one month doctor's appointment. she had just began moving from a traffic light when a bunch of lights on the dash came on and the vehicle became very hard to steer (found to be stabili-trac errors and faulty electric power steering). she managed to get the vehicle onto the shoulder without harm. after reading in the owners manual, she found that with this issue, turning the vehicle off and then back on may clear the issue. it did take care of the steering issue and she was able to drive again. it happened again on the way home from the doctors. ford looked at the vehicle and has ordered another steering assembly. the same fault has happened an additional four times since the first day. that is a total of six times. the local dealership has only been able to tell us that the part is on back-order because ford engineers are working on a revised part to correct the issue. the last time this happened to my wife she had both children in the car and was attempting to merge onto the highway. thankfully she was able to stay in an extended shoulder after the merge lane ended. turning the vehicle has corrected the issue every time so far. *tr

As i was driving through the mall parking lot, power steering failed & several warning lights lit up. i was in process of turning when power assist failed and i almost struck a parked car. i turned the vehicle off and restarted (power assist was then working). i immediately drove to my ford dealership where it was discovered i needed a new steering rack assembly. to the best of my knowledge, this incident is consistent with nhtsa case pe12-017.

During a late afternoon drive on the local freeway and under dry weather conditions, i was driving my 2010 ford explorer at approx. 70 mph when suddenly the luxury of power steering vanished. immediately, it was difficult to steer, especially when driving on surface streets at slower speeds and attempts to park. within moments of the power steering going away, a pop-up window appeared on my dash board instructing me of a power steering problem and inviting me to bring it to the attention of the local ford dealer. i reached my destination and turned off the car. after several hours, i turned on the car and the power steering was restored. after several weeks, i was again driving the local freeway at 70 mph under dry weather conditions and the same experience occurred. i again reached my destination, turned off the car and attended to my duties. again, after several hours, i turned on the car and found no pop-up windows on the dash board or power steering difficulties. i have taken it in to the local ford dealer and was told that it needed a new steering gear, which is presently on order and should be in within the next week. *tr

I was driving my parents and my toddler daughter back from visting a sibling (approx. 5 hour drive) when we stopped briefly to take a break about 2 1/2 hours away from home. when i started the car up again, i received warnings related to a power steering failure and advance trac failure. the car had no power steering and there appeared to be something wrong with the blinkers as well. on tuesday, following labor day) i took the vehicle to the dealership where i had purchased it for repair. more than a week later, i was informed that the part was on backorder with ford until october 1st and that there was a waiting list to get the part and there were almost 1000 people on the wait list ahead of me. i'm greatful that i had an extended warranty, however, even under the warranty they only have to provide a rental car for 10 days. i'm hopeful that the dealership will do the right thing and keep me in a car until sometime in hopefully october or november when they can repair the vehicle. i believe this to be a manufacturing defect which should be covered under the original warranty regardless of mileage. this appears to be happening to a number of people and is both a safety hazard as well as possibly a deceptive trade practice. *tr

This vehicle has experienced multiple (20+) power steering failures. it typically occurs while i am driving on the taconic state parkway, a 55 mph road in westchester county, ny. the power steering failure occurs quickly with little time for the driver to react. you simply get a small chime with an indicator on the dash stating power assist failure' followed by a message stating 'power steering failure'. by the time you read the message, you already know what has happened as you have no power steering the moment the chime is heard. the latest incident occurred as i was turning off the exit ramp for the taconic state parkway onto a local road to go home. half way through the turn, the power steering failed and i almost drove my car into another car at the intersection. with my strength, i was able to turn the wheel to complete the turn. otherwise, it would have been a head on collision intop a car stopped in the intersection. had this been my pregnant wife, it would have been a scary result. this car was brought to the local ford dealer (pleasantville ford) several months ago to have this issue addressed. they claimed at the time that it was due to a crossed wire that was fixed. the problem has continued to occur, and they presently have a new rack and pinion steering system on order from ford to try and address the issue. based on the latest occurrence, as well as a slew of other electrical issues with the vehicle, i am dropping it at the dealer today as i no longer deem it safe to be driven. i am extremely upset with ford and their product over this issue. *tr

The car's power steering went out while driving around 10 mph pulling out of a gas station. the screen said it was a power steering failure. turned car off and turned back on and it went away, however it happened once more later around 5 mph.

I was driving on a major hwy when i lost the ability to properly steer the vehicle at 55 mph, luckily i was able to get to the side of the road with a lot of effort. at the time my 4 year old and 4 month old were in the vehicle and luckily no one was injured. i called my husband in a panic and he came to pick me up. when he got there the power steering fault light was on and the terrain management system would not engage. after turning the vehicle off and on the steering came back but the warning light was still on. he drove the vehicle straight to the dealer and they are in the process of figuring out what is wrong.

This vehicle has experienced multiple (20+) power steering failures. it typically occurs while i am driving on the taconic state parkway, a 55 mph road in westchester coutny, ny. the power steering failure occurs quickly with little timne for the driver to react. you simply get a small chime with an indicator on the dash stating power assist failure' followed by a message stating 'power steering failure'. by the time you read the message, you already know what has happened as you have no power steering the moment the chime is heard. the latest incidnet occured as i was turning off the exit ramp for the taconic state parkway onto a local road to go home. half way through the turn, the power steering failed and i almost drove my car into another car at the intersection. with my strength, i was able to turn the wheel to complete the trun. otherwise, it would have been a head on collission intop a car stopped in the intersection. had this been my preagnant wife, it would have been a scary result. this car was brought to the local ford dealer (pleasantville ford) several months ago to have this issue addressed. they claimed at the time that it was due to a crossed wire that was fixed. the problem has continued to occur, and they presently have a new rack and pinion steering system on order from ford to try and address the issue. based on the latets occurence, as well as a slew of other electrical issues with the vehicle, i am dropping it at the dealer today as i no longer deem it safe to be driven. i am extremely upset with ford and their product over this issue.

I was slowing down and getting into the left turn lane. the light was green so i started to turn left and the traction light system came on, both lights, and the steering system failure alert came on and i lost all power steering and almost hit a pole. it was a nice day, no rain or moisture. the pavement was dry. *tr

A warning message saying service autotrac came on, following quickly by a power steering warning message. at that point, i could no longer steer the vehicle enough to continue driving.

I was pulling out of my garage and only got about 6 feet out of the garage and i immediately lost power steering - there was a message showing on the dash power steering module fault. 2 days before this happened there was a very hard shaking in the front end. you could see the front passenger seat shake. the ford dealer said that was caused by a problem with the drive shaft. and also said that ford is aware of people having problems with the drive shaft also. *tr

Started parked explorer and went to back up. the power assist steering fault light came on at the same time as the service advance trac light. i was unable to turn the vehicle at all.tried backing up and going forward but the steering wheel would not move. next i shut the engine off and turned it back on. the failure lights would not clear and the steering was still locked. called our local ford dealer and they me try restarting several times. eventually the process worked and the steering came back.dealer advised to bring the vehicle in right away.local dealer provided a rental car. dealer called the next day and said our explorer was not safe to drive. dealer ordered replacement steering rack. projected date for replacement part is november 9. our dealer has been great. i am not sure even when the car is repaired will i trust it. *tr

On three separate occasions within the past two weeks the power steering has failed. the most recent event occurred while my wife was driving at highway speeds. she said the car was uncontrollable and she had to brake to a stop in the travel lane. the problem can be resolved temporarily by shutting off the ignition and power and restarting, but it is obviously a recurring issue. *tr

I was making a right turn onto a service drive to go on the expressway. as i was completing the turn i lost the power steering & the car started to decelerate. i got 2 messages on the dashboard, the only one i paid attention to was service advance track, i think the 2nd message was about a loss of power steering. if it was, it was because of the advance track breaking. i was able to pull over to the side of the road & stop the car. shutting the car off & restarting did nothing to clear the problem. when i looked up advance track in the owner's manual it explicitly said if the advance track broke the car would decelerate & power steering would be lost & the car would need to be towed, it should not be driven if this happened. i then called the dealer & was told i would need to have the car towed in. when i called the next day i was told the part had been ordered & should be in on wed & then it would be installed. when i called on wed i was told the part was on a 2 week national backorder; which meant the part would not be in until aug 9. it is now aug 20 & the part has still not been received, i have no idea when the dealer expects delivery. the dealer has been very good about it & i am driving a rental car, paid for by ford, until the repair is complete. earlier in the year i had another problem with the throttle boot needing to be replaced & i wonder now if the 2 problems are related. *tr

While traveling down a highway at approximately 70 mph the power steering went out on our ford explorer. obviously this was not a good situation. we almost caused an accident. we pulled to the side of the road. shut the car off. eventually restarted the vehicle and continued on our travels. when we returned home from vacation we contacted ford and they now have our explorer in their shop and we have been driving a rental car for 2 weeks. several weeks prior to this when i started the vehicle to back it out of the garage the power steering had failed and the warning light was on. i shut the vehicle off and restarted it and the power seemed to work fine. i had no other issues with it until the 7/28/12 incident described above. *tr

On july 4, 2012, was driving on the highway getting ready to exit in about 100 yards, as i was decreasing speed i heard and felt a light bang, the car seemed to surge like it was the transmission and brakes were pulsating, and had no power steering. car pulled severely to the right almost hitting the guard rail, could not steer. jammed on breaks, fortunately in the slow lane, and pulled over. power steering light and hill descent control fault came on, shut the car off and turned it back on power steering then worked but the traction control light on center console did not work until the next day when i took it to the dealer. dealer kept car for 2 days, returned it to me with no found no fault. on sunday, july 22, 2012, the same thing happened at 30 mph, felt the car jump forward then the power steering assist light and hill descent light came on as well as another light (i took pics of the error messages). this time when i pulled over and restarted it, it did not work, let the car sit for 15 minutes still did not work, called the towline and no answer, so drove the car 3 miles to home with no power steering or traction control. next day called dealer called dealer, and they said they could not take me in for another week, also stated they never heard of these issues, so i googled and found this website where other people are having the same problems. the traction control has happened numerous times (at least 10) and the power steering twice within 18 days. *tr

This has happened twice now about 3 weeks apart from each other. we are driving under normal conditions and the power steering will fail. an alert on the dash will say power steering failure. once we turn the car off and restart it the power steering engages again. i took it to the dealer and since the computer didn't submit a code and they couldn't reproduce the problem they sent me home with it. this is extremely unsafe, if we happen to be turning when it all the sudden goes out we would have ended up going off the road or in to oncoming traffic. these cars are mainly owned by families with kids since it has three rows of seats, can something be done before it results in more serious consequences?

On several occasions after starting the vehicle, the steering will not function, its stiff as a brick, wheel can not be turned. shutting off the vehicle and restarting corrected the problem. one one occasion, while pulling out of a parking lot, the steering became very stiff and the wheel would not turn. it was momentary and corrected itself.

Driving at 35mph when a beep and notification popped up in the instrument panel. i received a warning for power steering assist fault and had a service advance trac warning. i lost power steering to the vehicle, which was very difficult to pull off of the road in traffic. i also lost the terrain management system function. after turning off the ignition and re-starting the engine, the warning went away and i regained power steering. this problem has happened 3 more times before taking it in. the dealership reporgramed the computer. this sequence happend again after the reprogram, and the replaced my steering angle sensor and reprogramed again. i had two more failures after this was done and the vehicle is back at the dealership today.

A warning light came on while i was making a right turn. the steering wheel became hard turn, the first time i was able to get the truck to the curb and restart the truck. that seemed to make the light go away and i was able to make turns with ease. the other time the i lost my power steering, i was traveling on the highway on my way home from work traffic was heavy, it was a struggle to get to the breakdown from the left lane. i was able to avoid some close calls that day. i have lost the power steering several other times before, but that incident made me set up the truck for service. i made my call on 7/20/12 for a 7/28/12 service, the ford service center customer rep. told me the part is back order and they don't know they will have the part in stock, also they kept the truck and gave a ford focus to drive. not good considering i use my truck for work. *tr

(no leaks, fluid level was fine) restarted vehicle, the computer seemed to reset and steering seemed fine. drove around parking lot steering fine. has not happened again. taking vehicle to dealership to have them check. vehicle has less than 12,000 miles 2011 ford explorer limited 4x4, v6 motor. *tr

Power steering failure on 2011 ford explorer while traveling in neighborhood. started the vehicle with remote start to cool vehicle in hot, humid houston, texas about 3 to 4 minutes before entering it. we drove 1.2 miles to an acquaintance's residence to co-sign a check for non-profit payment. left vehicle running for +/- 3 minutes in his driveway. backed out of his driveway and drove 1/2 mile when lost power steering and noticed two messages on the dash. one showed power steering assist fault and other service auto tracking. stopped on the street, shut off engine, and restarted the car. no message. drove 1/4 and the event recurred as described. returned home and parked car at our personal residence. called russell & smith ford service department at 5:03pm and left message. suspect it is after hours and will not hear from them until morning of july 26, 2012. the message is not in owner's manual. searched the internet and noticed nhtsa investigation and chose to contribute and provide contact information. *tr

I was driving with my children on june 5, 2012 when suddenly the steering wheel locked. shortly there after a yellow alert message appeared saying that a power steering asst fail had occurred. i could not do anything with the car and was frantic hoping that we would not be hit by other traffic. as a last resort i totally shut off the car and turned it back on. the car was then drive-able and i immediately took it to the dealership. they serviced the vehicle and noted that the car showed a voltage drop. they determined that there was nothing else they could do as the trouble shooting steps were complete and there was nothing visibly wrong with the vehicle. now just shy of 6 weeks later i was again driving with my children in the car when the very same power steering asst fail alert came on as my steering wheel locked again. i tried to yank on the steering wheel to see if it would budge or if there was anything else i could. remembering the last scenario i turned the car off and on again. this time, the same message appeared and nothing changed. desperate i turned the car on and off again and the message went away and i was able to steer the vehicle. it is currently being towed to the dealership. i do not feel safe driving this vehicle and would be fearful to get behind the wheel of it again. *tr

I purchased the 2011 ford explorer on 6/10/12. on three separate occasions the car was started and power steering would not work but was able to be remedied by turning the ignition off and back on again. an appointment was set up to have car serviced. on two more separate occasions after appointment was made power steering was lost while driving on the highway at speeds ranging 55 to 65. on july 3rd once again while car was being started the power steering wouldn't work and was unable to be remedied by turning off ignition and restarting. the vehicle was towed to a ford dealer and still awaiting back ordered part that i am told may take a long time. *tr

As the vehicle was being driven home from work the power steering went out making it very difficult to control the vehicle. a warning light also appeared on the dashboard indicating that the power steering wasn't functioning properly. the vehicle was safely pulled over to the side of the road and the ignition was turned off. after a few moments the vehicle was restarted and the power steering seemed to be functioning properly and that specific warning message disappeared from the dash. however, upon restart, additional dashboard warning lights indicating that there was a problem with the traction control appeared.

When the vehicle was started, the power steering was not functioning. the dash message center showed a power steering assist fault. this had happened a couple of times in the past but turning the vehicle off and then back on solved the problem on prior occasions. this time the power steering continued to fail after multiple times of turning the vehicle off and back on. this malfunction made the vehicle very difficult to steer and maneuver. *tr

I was starting to back out of a parking lot and the stabilitrac lights came on. the steering got tight and there was little movement to turn the wheel right or left. i pulled a few feet back in the parking stall, turned the car off, and restarted it again. everything seemed fine for a mile or so and the lights came back on. i could barely turn the wheel. i got a tow to the dealership. they had to order and replace the steering pump. this happened a second time three days ago, on 7/2/12. the dealership had to again replace the steering pump. i have no confidence that this will not happen again. this second time i had my two 7-year-olds in the car and was traveling about 40mph down a major street. the same lights came on and the steering wheel tightened. i could barely turn the wheel. luckily i was close to home, but still had to make 5 turns. i was turning the steering wheel so hard that i felt like i was going to break it. it took all my arm strength to make the turns. i would turn the signal on and it would blink once and go off also. it is scary when it happens and as mentioned, i have no faith that it won't happen again. and this vehicle is just now a year old. *tr

Unfortunately, for such a great truck, the power steering has failed three times on my vehicle which has only just over 14k miles on it. it occurred the first time around the 11k mile point in which the power steering failed for no reason going ~40mph. the dashboard displayed a message stating power steering assist fault. this is the same message that was displayed on all three occasions. upon turning the truck off and back on, everything was back to normal. the fault occurred again at 13837 miles (i have a picture) and again just today at around 14100. after the initial fault, i took the truck to the local ford dealer who advised that there was nothing they could do to assist as the onboard computer does not 'document the issue'. i was advised to monitor the situation and if it happens again to leave the car running and contact the dealership who will then tow the truck to its location. easier said than done when you are in the middle of a major three lane road in the dc suburbs. it's most convenient to wrestle the truck to the next traffic light and restart which resolves the issue. i am obviously very frustrated with it - i bought the truck in late july 2011 for $48,000 (sticker price). so far i have not had any toddlers in the car during these incidents but it is just a matter of time. hoping for some guidance and good customer service from ford. *tr

I was in the middle of a left hand turn when the power steering went out at approx 10-15 mph - the fault code appeared & alarm sounded-i had to muscle the steering wheel to complete my turn while nearly going over the curb into a business. my first reaction was that the engine had stalled but when the fault showed again & alarm sounded this time it was showing that the terrain management system had failed. as it was a 2-3 mile straight road to my ford dealer & i drove there. after arriving at the dealer i shut off the engine, reported what happened. the service advisor started the vehicle & the power steering had reset. they put the vehicle on the diagnostic unit & it showed a steering gear & steering gear module/communication sensor(?) needed replacement. it was ordered & installed on6/18/12 & has not failed sense then. i mentioned an injury - it was to my right shoulder as i have a total shoulder implant. i hurt it muscling the steering wheel to straightening the vehicle out.

I was slowing down to make a right turn into a strip mall and the wheel didnt turn at all until i put both hands on the wheel and fought the wheel with both arms to turn. a message on my lcd screen said power steering failure. i had to turn the truck off and back on and the steering was fine, i thought. about 20 miles later the truck did the same failure again. i turned the truck off and back on. it just had a cooling fan tsb performed at ford yesterday, dealer says that has nothing to do with this, but this explorer is one big computer so im not too sure since they told me a re-program was done for the fans. please investigate this as this is will cause a huge accident at some point for some explorer owner. i am taking this back to the dealer monday for a loaner.

Started vehicle and received terrain management warning, power steering fault and traction control fault. vehicle electronic power steering not working and terrain management system also disabled. will have to drive to dealership without power steering. shut off vehicle multiple times and restarted. same warnings and result.

My wife was attempting to turn left in heavy traffic when there seemed to be a disconnect between the steering wheel and front wheels. she could turn the steering wheel but the car would not respond. she was able to stop without hitting anyone. she got the power assist failure message. after shutting the car off and restarting, the problem seemed to be resolved. the dealership found a power steering control module failure and has replaced the steering gear. the service manager advised us that since we had a new one, we should have no more problems. i reminded him that the previous one was new when we bought the car.

While coming back to work from lunch, my wife was turning left into parking lot when the power steering assist fault light came on and steering became very stiff and hard to turn. local ford dealership picked up the car and kept for a week but could not duplicate the problem, so ford would not let them fix the problem. got the car back on friday june 1, 2012 and drove the car as usual. monday, june 4, 2012 on the way back to work from lunch, driving 40 mph, the power steering assist fault light came on and steering again became very stiff and hard to turn. is it going to take a tragic accident from this apparent problem before ford does anything. i am asking the nhtsa to please begin an investigation into this problem before my family or another family is seriously injured from this problem.

While traveling downtown columbia at approximately 15 mph, my service tracking default light comes on and then power steering default light comes on, my steering wheel completely locks up, luckily, i was not making a turn at the time i would have nailed another car or a person, i immediately turned off the car and restarted it, power steering began to work but the service tracking default light came back on. i am very worried to put my two children in this car now, dealership is having me bring in the vehicle tomorrow and i am seriously considering buying an extended warranty on this car, i have had explorers in the past and never had a problem, but i don't know that i will buy another one after the issues with this car. this is a very serious issue, ford needs to get off their butts and get this fixed, someone could seriously get hurt. serious law suit waiting to happen.

It happened again, six days after my vehicle's first steering problem. when i started my 2011 explorer on the morning of 4/18/12, the power steering assist failure light came on and my power steering was gone. as instructed by my ford dealer, i left the vehicle on and called them. they immediately sent a flatbed tow truck, which towed my vehicle, while still running, to the ford dealership. they checked for problems and made repairs, and i quote, install new eps gear removed subframe and install new epas gear programed as built datae and cleared dtcs performed 2 wheel aligment test drive operation good. in layman terms, they replaced the power steering from the steering column to the front wheels and did a 2 wheel alignment. it took only 1 full day since the parts were ordered overnight. i hope that has solved the power steering problem. i am extremely pleased with the concern and service my local ford dealer provided.

2011 ford explorer was parked. started car and power steering failure light came on alarms sounding and steering wheel was locked, yet car would back up ...straight. prior to this incident when car was stopped at a light it seemed to have a transmission slip or jump. after waiting for an hour for tow truck the explorer started fine and steering seemed to work. too nervous to drive. car was towed to ford dealer.

While slowing for a stop light, i felt a clunk in the steering column and then my 2011 explorer lost power steering. i slowed and turned (with all my strength) to stop on a side street. the power assist failure light was on as well as the little traction control cars on the lower right of the display screen. the lights on the 4-wheel drive center-console did not work either. a message also appeared to service advancetrac immediately. i turned the car off and called for assistance. then started it up to drive to the local ford dealer. of course, then the vehicle reset everything and the power steering was restored. the ford dealer could not detect any error messages during their computer check-up. they said if it happens again, don't turn the car off so they can run a check-up on it while the power steering is not working. so now i am praying every time i drive it.

As we were slowing for a stop sign on a curve, the steering wheel literally jerked out of my husband's hands, straightening the wheels. a warning bell went off and the dash displayed power assist failure. it was impossible to move the wheel. after turning off the engine and restarting, steering returned to normal. the dealer had a previous explorer with the same problem which was corrected by replacing the power steering control module. there are several other identical incidents recorded on this site and other internet forums, all eventually repaired in the same manner. ford, however, will not approve warranty repair because they cannot duplicate the failure at the dealership or retrieve an error code, saying they can't fix something if they don't know what the problem really is. they want us to drive a car with a serious and frightening safety issue until it fails completely or causes an accident for which they will deny responsibility since there is nothing for them to repair. ford's regional customer service manager also refused to document the complaint or denial in writing.

2nd time it happens first time while driving at 40 mph or above the steering light came on and the suv was unable to steer , pull over and turn car and re started and gain steering took cvar to the dealer reset the light and was told it was ok . at 5000 miles it haapen again but this time it happens while trying to get off the highway light came on and steering wheel got hard . this time unable to drive it tow home . talk to ford and was told to take it to the dealer and we look in to it but , i think is not normal for a car not to have a safety back up plan when this fail . and very unsafe know it coul happen any time with no warning . even if ford claim it will fix it .what will prevent from this happenig at a very odd time and it may cause lots of injury. they said it does not have enough complaint for them to look in to this . but i said 1 complaint with multiple occurance shoul be enough for the to at least pay attention or look in to a safety plan in case it does fail

Letter from re few defects in my 2011 ford explorer remain after the dealers repeated repair attempts. these issues distract me while driving and it is a concern to my safety as well *tgw the consumer stated the main issue was the steering; the steering wheel was not straight and when driving, the vehicle pulled in the opposite direction. the shift increased when increasing speed. also, the a/c unit changed temperatures by itself. the brake warning light illuminated and the touch and sync did not work. the consumer believed the software needed to be updated as his phone and or mp3 player kept getting disconnected. when using the sync service to request directions it kept misinterpreting the commands, as well as disconnecting when downloading a route. on one occasions, the entire system failed and the screen went blank. *jb

2011 ford explorer 4wd is programmed to send 100% power to the front wheels during normal driving. upon sudden acceleration especially going uphill the subsequent torque steer is overwhelming to the driver. can be so severe it can rip the wheel from the hands of the driver. this needs to adressed with programming to better distribute power to all 4 wheels.
