Defect SummaryFord is recalling certain 1997 through 2003 model year ford f-150, 2004 model year ford f-150 heritage, 1997 through 1999 model year f-250 less than 8,500 lbs. gross vehicle weight rating (gvwr), and 2002 and 2003 lincoln blackwood vehicles manufactured from june 20, 1995, through august 4, 2004, originally sold, or currently registered in, connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia, wisconsin, and the district of columbia. prolonged exposure to road deicing chemicals may cause severe corrosion of the fuel tank straps which secure the tank to the vehicle.
Consequence SummaryAs a result of the corrosion, one or both straps may fail allowing the fuel lines to separate from the tank, or in some cases, causing the tank to contact the ground. either scenario may result in a fuel leak presenting a fire hazard.
Corrective SummaryFord will notify owners and instruct them to take their vehicles to a ford or lincoln dealer to have the fuel tank straps replaced with straps that have increased corrosion protection. early in this campaign, if replacement straps are not available, dealers may install a cable support under the strap as an interim repair or a steel reinforcement over the existing strap as a permanent repair. any repairs will be performed free of charge. the safety recall began on september 16, 2011. owners may contact ford motor company customer relationship center at 1-866-436-7332. ford's recall campaign number is 11s21

One or both of the steel straps holding up the fuel tank and attaching it to the truck frame can corrode and fail (break or separate).if one strap fails, the tank may tilt and drop and possibly contact the road surface.if both straps break, the entire tank may drop to the road.if either failure occurs while the vehicle is being driven, contact with the road can abrade the tank and create a hole from which gasoline can spill.when the tank drops, it remains attached to the vehicle only by the fuel filler hose and/or supply lines, or in rare instances, by the skid plate, if present.in some cases the weight of the tank sufficiently strained the hoses and fittings and caused separation and subsequent fuel leaks from those connections.the fire hazard created by leaking gasoline is increased by the possible presence of sparks created by the metal tank being dragged along the road.corrosion of the straps appears to be caused by prolonged exposure to road deicers, frequently road salt, used to treat snow or ice covered roads.states in which large quantities of deicers are applied to roads during the winter season (salt belt states) account for the predominant portion of strap failures.vehicles in these salt belt states are prone to experience corrosion related failures more frequently and earlier in a vehicle

The brackets that hold the fuel tank straps have rusted along with the straps to the point that the tank may fall off. i believe that this is the same problem that caused the failure of the straps rusting through. this can create a fire even after the straps have been replaced because the whole structure of the fuel tank support system is failing

On 8/22/2011 the fuel tank fell completely out of my 1998 f-150 truck due to the fuel tank straps breaking. the fuel tank and straps had to be replaced because the tank ruptured when it was dragging the road underneath my truck before i could come to a complete stop. the emergency repairs were made by myself and during this process i also noticed that the fuel tank vapor pressure sensor had broke as well during the incident. the sensor was priced at the local ford dealer for $102.00 but this part has not been replaced and i am currently operating my vehicle without this safety device. i have received an official safety recall notice 11s21 from the ford motor company for this exact issue and the recall has been performed to my vehicle even though the parts were brand new. i have also received reimbursement from a local ford dealer (donley ford of shelby, oh) for the fuel tank and the straps. the dealer would not replace the sensor because they did not get authorization from ford to do so. i have contacted ford customer care and spoke with a supervisor named chris. he informed me that ford is not liable for the sensor since there is no way to determine if it had been replaced prior to this incident. i purchased the truck when it was approximately 1 year old and this part has never been replaced. a complaint # 8802723 was filed with eastern michigan better business bureau asking for ford to replace the sensor, but they were not able to help me and have closed the complaint. ford's reason for not replacing the part was because i did the repairs myself. i feel ford is liable for the part and should supply me with a replacement part. i would greatly appreciate your assistance in convincing ford that they are responsible for the part since is was broke as the result of a known recall issue.

While the vehicle was traveling on a level, paved two-lane rural road, the front fuel tank storage mounting strap broke. the front of the fuel tank dropped down and came in contact with the road surface causing it to be dragged. the tank was pushed backwards and it broke off the brake line to the rear axle creating a loss of braking ability. the vehicle coasted to a stop and it was found that the fuel tank was punctured where it had dragged on the pavement, causing a loss of approximately fifteen gallons of gasoline on the surface of the road. the local ford dealer was contacted and it was determined that the dealer did not have the parts required for the repair. the ford dealer advised to have the vehicle towed to a non-ford repair facility, have it repaired and the cost would be reimbursed by ford.

While driving down the highway at 65 mph the strap that holds the gas tank in place broke. by the time we got to a safe place to pull over, the gas tank had a large hole in it from scraping on the road & 20+ gallons of gasoline was running out beneath our vehicle. we were extremely lucky there was no fire. we had to pay $240 for a flatbed to get the vehicle back home & another $500 to put on a new gas tank & new straps. not to mention the $65 in gas that poured out on the road. i think a warning from ford would have saved us from what easily could have ended in disaster.

Was driving my 1998 ford f-150 and over heard a scraping noise. i had just had the drums on my truck serviced and thought one of them may have seized so i pulled into a parking lot only to find 2 of the straps supporting the gas tank broke off disposing a full gas tank over a church parking lot and down a stretch of road. i have been notified by my insurer that a claim of almost 10000 dollars has been submitted from the city for clean up and the church to re-pave the driveway therefore upping my insurance almost 400$ a year and staining my record for up to 6 years! this is completely unfair that ford can get away with making such a shoddy product and i cant help but feel that they are responsible for this incident and that i should be at no fault. i have since sold the death trap truck.

I was driving at approximately 40 mph on a smooth, paved road, when the two straps that support the vehicle fuel tank broke, and the tank fell to the road. i immediately pulled off the main road and investigated. the rear of the tank was still attached to the frame by a plastic cradle, but the front end had contacted the road and ploughed along for about 100 feet. there was a dent in the tank and some wear, but no apparent leaks. the fuel lines and filler hose remained intact and attached. i temporarily winched the tank up with a ratchet strap to get home, and have since replaced the faulty straps with new ones.

1998 ford f150 fuel tank strap failure: the fuel pump failed and i was preparing to drop the fuel tank to perform the necessary repairs when i realized the only thing holding the tank up was the brush guard; the straps were rusted/rotted off and the flex hoses from the fill tube to the tank were stretched out. i'm lucky i had the off road package with the brush guard to support the tank. i have no idea how long it was like this so the date on this report is somewhat misleading. i am not aware of any recalls for this problem i will be very careful not to drive behind any other f 150s like mine.

Noticed poor fuel economy and about a month later noticed the smell of gas but not constant, only after gas fill-up. looked for issues but didn't see anything obvious when under the vehicle with a light. while parked in a garage, found a drip and noticed that it smelled as if it was gas. looked the truck over again and found that the straps holding the gas tank in had rusted badly and caused the tank to rust and leak. why is there not insulating rubber between the tank and the straps like other manufactures have which would prevent this dangerous event from happening? purchasing new straps and a new gas tank to fix the problem.

I own a 1998 ford f-150 4x4 and i am send this report after reading an article online that you were investigating the mounting strap's one the fuel tank. i wanted to report that i have had the same problem with mine. i was driving down the highway after filling up my truck when i started smelling gas fumes, i pulled over and upon inspection i found my fuel tank was almost on the ground the rear strap had broke due to rust. i had leaked raw fuel for about 6 miles and had lost about 1/4 of a tank. the tank falling resulted in the tank pulling away from the filling neck at the tank connection and stressed the fuel line connections. i have since fixed the problem at the cost of $45.61. i just wanted to report this problem. thank you

Gas tank straps on 98 f150 rusted through. 1 of straps rusted off and tank was being held on by the other strap which was rusted almost through as well. luckily i noticed the first strap rusted in half before the other gave way. i replaced the straps already however now my gas tank will also need to be replaced as it is also rusting out under where the rusted in half gas tank strap was and gas tank has fuel condensation on outside.

My son filled the gas tank on my 1998 f150 pickup truck with gasoline and drove a few blocks when the gas tank strap broke allowing the gas tank to fall down and drag on the pavement. it punctured the tank and fuel leaked out. fortunately, he stopped right away and it did not spark to cause a fire or possible explosion. i had it towed in and a replacement gas tank and new straps are being installed. i have never lost a gas tank on any vehicle i have ever owned.

I read this week about ford f150 fuel tank straps breaking, my tank dropped from my 1998 f150 last summer, i was up the street from home when i heard something dragging, thought it was the car behind me, as i pulled into my driveway, a gusher of gas came pouring out from under my truck, upon inspection, the front part of the gas tank was dragging and made a hole on the bottom edge. later i jacked up the tank and secured it with rope so the tow company could take it in for repairs.

My 1998 ford f-150 fits the summary of the nhtsa campaign id # 97v171000. my truck is currently in with the dealer for another reason, including the speed control recall. however, they will not fix the gear position indicator because they state it is not a ford recall, regardless of what the nhtsa site indicates as a (recall date of 10/07/97) because ford has to make a recall notice. my indicator is off by one (it says i'm in 'r' when rally in 'p' and so forth). 'i understand not doing a mass recall for this, but when a vehicle is in for a mandatory recall of the speed control catching fire, one would think they would repair a vehicle that is experiencing another known defect as indicated in nhtsa campaign 97v171000. also, it is in for damage related to the fuel tank, and even though they are replacing the fuels tank and many other items attached to it (i.e. lines etc.) they don't feel it is warranted to address another nhtsa recall related to the leaf spring potentially puncturing the tank. that is campaign #98v161000. regards, steve. *tr
