Went to make an appointment with firestone to have my plugs changed per ford manual on my 2002 f150 5.4 liter v8.it was told to me that they would not touch the vehicle as i should contact ford directly. they claim the plugs explode. we then called the ford dealer service department in sayville the woman stated at sayville ford service department the plugs would cost to replace $ 383.00unless the plugs explode inside the engine when removed then it would cost 1/2 hour more per plug as they are having problems with the plugs exploding it could run up to a total cost of$ 800.00 max to remove.something about new sleave has to be replaced when it explodes. i was really irate we are only talking about plugs.i then contacted ford at 1 800 392-3673 at customer relationship center claims they know nothing about this problem well i have a problem with this if firestones will not touch the vehicle and there own ford dealers explains they have a major problem then how do you not know about it. problem. i have a big problem with this not only concerns about engine also the cost factor with regards with the removal of . defected plugs i believe they already new of this problem and as usually they are trying to pass the defect to the consumer. it needs to be stopped.

Ford f150 2002 was having what we thought was a wheel balance issue. day before sounded like lifters we needing adjustment (tapping) that seemed to get better as it drove. was turning onto a highway type road, engine made a bang that sounded like it threw a rod, followed by loud pops. there was no smoke or oil. immediately pulled over and cut the engine. had to tow truck to dealer ($90). ford dealer identified blown spark plug #3, and used a kit to install helicoil to allow replacement spark plug. they said induction cleaning was also necessary due to the non-firing cyl, plus all new plugs. repair cost $950. lost use of truck for two days, and then found out this is a known issue without a recall; and it could happen at any time on other spark plugs. spark plugs original to vehicle and normal maintenance was conducted on the truck. was advised i could have done nothing different to prevent this from happening.. shocked and appalled to read of thousands of similar occurrence, and ford even has a kit to repair their manufacturing defect.

I own a 2002 ford f150 with a 5.4 triton engine. i just had an issue with a spark plug coming out of the head. i have read many reports of people having this same issue with new factory plugs and replacement plugs. this seems to be a desing flaw that ford has yet to admit is a design flaw. this issues can result in a fire luckily it did not happen with mine. i work at a salvage yard and this is one of the common things we see happen to these motors. i thought i had one that was not part of the issue but i guess not. now i will have the cost of a tow call and what ever it will cost to fix it and from what i have seen so far around $500-1500 if heads are not changed. if heads are changed then it could be alot more.

Tl-the contact owns a 2002 ford f-150. while driving 55 miles per hour, the spark plug failed. the contact spoke with the dealer and was advised that the vehicle does not call for spark plug repair until 100,000 miles. the dealer advised the contact since there are different metals interacting with each other, this will cause the spark plugs to fail. the contact was advised to pay out of pocket for the repair. the contact experienced the failure on a separate occasion and paid $250 out of pocket for the repair. the vehicle had been repaired. the current miles were 89,533. the failure miles were 89,520. aa

Apparently the nhtsa must need more complaints or a death to investigate this issue. second pending fix 9-23-2009 95,000. after having read all these complaints and reliving the same problems again through this website, and i'm sure many more undocumented complaints. i am now on my second fix. first time 3 spark plugs through the engine. had extended warranty so ford did a band aid fix ( surprise ) now here we are a year later and we need surgery $4900 just to put a new head on one side. what is being done to hold ford accountable for a known defect. the opportunity for fire and/or death is very high and yet this problem is not important to anyone except for letting ford get rich on their known defect. sad gov site this is just a vent page never to handled. *tr

Event.. i was driving west bound on the 215 freeway in las vegas, nv. exiting durango road. i sat at the intersection waiting for the signal light to turn green. when the light turned green, moving forward, i was making a left hand turn going (10mph) south bound on durango road, just at that time i herd a loud pop noise. as i was pulling over, my truck (f150) was running rough, i stopped, put it in park , shut the engine off, opened the hood and there sat a coil pack including the spark plug on top of the motor. after evaluating the incident more, i notice that the coil pack and spark plug came from the passenger side engine head #three (3) cylinder. my truck has the original motorcraft spark plugs in it since 2002. not sure why the spark plug would just pop-out. nice job ford!! ford manufactures the motor (triton 5.4l) and the motorcraft spark plugs? seems very simple whose responsibility this is. repair cost

I own a 2002 ford f150 with the triton 5.4l v-8. i have had spark plugs eject from 3 different cylinders now and ford claims it is not a recall issue. this problem has been noted on many of the ford vehicles with the triton 5.4 v-8. when the spark plug is ejected fuel vapor can leak into the engine compartment and possibly cause a fire. i have not had that problem but i am frustrated with ford's unwillingness to cover a known problem with their design. *tr
04/12/20091170001
Leading up to the spark plug being blown out of my ford f-150 with a 5.4 l motor, i heard a distinct ticking sound that resembled an exhaust manifold leak. driving on the highway around 75 miles per hour, two hours into my drive the tick became louder and finally a pop came from under the hood. i then pulled over and left the truck idling. looking under the hood i see the coil over pack vibrating a lot and then i shut the truck off and unplugged the coil over pack and out came the coil over pack and attached a spark plug. the coil over pack was broken due to the force of the plug being blown out. i am now in the process of towing my truck home which is 3 hours to do the repair necessary to fix the problem. to fix the problem i am looking to install a thread insert in hopes of saving a lot of money. this is the cheaper easier way to fix it for i do not want to replace the head myself nor do i want ford's investing thousands to replace it. *tr

My 2002 ford f-150 blew a spark plug right out of the cylinder while driving on rt 85 in connecticut. the danger from this was great as there was gas splashed throughout the engine compartment. went t the ford dealer and they played down the situation and said it would cost $600.00 to fix. i also incurred a $200.00 towing bill, and had to replaced a spark plug coil which was damaged by the spark plug to the tune of $100.00. the internet has provided information that this is a significant problem with ford v-8 engines, and i'm wondering why the nhtsa lets this continue...many people are suffering financial loss, and safety issues with fires that result from this situation. *tr

I own a 2002 ford f-150 xlt 4x4 with a trition 5.4l v-8. i went out to start it this morning and i heard a loud noise that sounded like a shot went off. then my truck started shaking and making a chugging noise. i shut it off and opened the hood and found that one of my spark plugs just blew out of the engine. it broke the coil and stripped out the threads where the spark plug goes. i had to have it towed to a mechanic and it cost $503.83 for the repair. the mechanic told me this was a common problem with the trition engines. i went online and did some research and found many complaints of the same subject. i think ford needs to issue a recall to fix this problem. *tr

On my birth day i experienced something like never before i blew the #4 spark plug on the passenger side brought it back to work what a rough ride. then started to look in the hole with a bore scope to find out the treads were gone yeah. called around to find out how much it would cost me and the cheapest was a machine shop called lentech automotive at a price of 300.00 not bad but i made some more calls and found a kit to do it at bensons autoparts 65.00 hope this will fix it. *tr

I experienced a spark plug blow out on my way to work. i was stranded on a narrow road and had to call for help. my dad called a tow tru ck and we had it towed to the dealer in kailua kona, hawaii. we saw that a spark plug had blown out. the tow truck driver said his truck did the same thing. at the dealer they said they did not know why it did that. after getting it repaired for $600.00, my truck would not run. they said, you need a new engine at the tune of $5,000.00. it ran fine prior to that spark plug blow out. with further investigation, an expert mechanic suspects they mishandeled the installation. they want me to pay for their mistake. this started out a ford part defect, but is ending up a destroyed engine. i will demand they fix it, or we will sue. this is outrageous!!! ford should not be bailed out. why can't someone do something about this? jail, perhaps? i am without a truck. *tr

I was driving to pick up lunch one day from work and when i pulled out into traffic to head back i heard a loud pop followed by a loss of power and a sound that made me think the serpentine belt broke. the plug shot out of the head and broke a coil pack in half. i talked to the ford dealer that i get my parts at, and he told me it happens alot on 4.6 liters, 5.4 liters, and v-10 ford trucks so much that they stay well stocked on the parts that i needed to fix what ford doesn't consider to be a problem, the fix is a well greased, extra long 14 mm tap and helicoil, red locktite, spark plug, coil pack, and any other bits and pieces the plug destoys on its way out, from the reports i'm reading i got lucky thtat it was just my coil that took the brunt of it, i've talked to some people around the area and they see any where from 2 to 4 per week, and on top of that there was two people at my work that have had the same problem. we only have 18 employees. one was in a 5.4 and the other was a v10. the dealer told me there was no recall on the problem and that ford doesn't recognize it. the part will be repared and will not be avalible and just cost me more of my time and money doing stupid repares that are questionable at best. *tr

While driving down the road, i heard a loud explosion and the engine began running rough. i pulled over and opened the hood. the explosion had dented the inside of the hood. i found a broken coil laying on top of the engine, and the corresponding spark plug laying beneath the engine. i took the vehicle to a mechanic, who re-threaded the spark plug hole and installed a new spark plug. the vehicle performed as usual for about six months, and then the same exact situation occurred, involving the same exact spark plug. the second occurrence, the plug and coil were so damaged that the head could not be re-threaded and repaired. after researching this issue, i found that dozens of other owners have experienced the same problem, which is due to an engine and/or piston defect. the second occurrence required drilling out the affected head, tapping it, and installing a helicoil before the spark plug could be replaced. i am very concerned about this issue, since in addition to the expense and inconvenience this manufacturing defect has caused me, it is extremely dangerous as well. while i have not had an engine fire, other owners of this make and model have reported engine fires. *tr

I was driving and felt and heard a pop in the engine compartment. i pulled off the road thinking it was a tire blow out. once i got out and checked the tires i started the engine again. it sounded like there was no exhaust manifold. i had to get it towed to a service station. i later found out that it blew out a spark plug out of the head and split the coil and possibly damaged another coil. it has not been repaired yet. i am very dissatisfied with the situation. i have done research and found thousands and thousands of other people having the same problem. owners of these vehicles should not have to pay out thousands of dollars for a ford design error. *tr

On thurs. 12-07, i was driving 40 mph when i heard a loud pop, the truck was running rough and loud. i pulled over, it blew a spark plug(#4). towed it to the dealership, was told the head would be replaced, then when i returned for the truck was told they would only repair the hole with a helicoil, which i found a service bulletin #0214 that states engine assemblies with aluminum cylinder heads repaired in vehicle have been found to leak coolant and/ or oil from the cylinder head gasket area. the dealership seems to think this is trivial, and refuses to replace the head under warranty. truck is an '02 f-150 lightning. 5.4 motor. *nm

Turned over my 2002 ford f-150. a loud pop occurred as a spark plug/coil pack blew out. this is the 3rd coil pack that has blown since april of 2009. they fix it every time by having to replace the coil pack and spark plug, along with having to re-tap the head. luckily, this time, i was in a grocery store parking lot. the last two times, my wife and i were driving the truck when it happened, which placed us in danger because it could have caused an explosion. i know there are quite a few other people saying the same things about that happening to them multiple times. i think it's time that ford pushes a recall through dealing with the coil packs, as more and more people are affected by the same issue, before someone is seriously hurt as a result.

I was driving home from work doing about 35mph and a large and loud pop followed by repeated quieter popping sound until i shut the engine off. i looked under the hood and confirmed my suspition. a spark plug ejected from the #3 cylinder. i had to helicoil the head to fix it, otherwise the dealership wanted $1800 to replace the head. 2 months later driving too work the #2 cylinder ejected its sparkplug. same fix. i'm to worried to drive the truck at this point and haven't driven it since.

2002 ford f-150 with a 5.4l triton v8. the #7 spark plug blew out of the port and broke the coil. that left fuel vapors from the piston to be exposed to the damaged ignition coil that was arcing and could of caught fire with my kids in the truck. if you look online there are thousands of complaints from f150 owners. this needs to be addressed and a recall from ford needs to be issued.

I have a ford f-150 that has a triton v-8 motor. it has 110'000 miles. i have had the truck for 3 years and purchased it with a 5 year loan agreement. i was driving and the spark plug blewout of the motor. apparently this is a common problem,so common that they have a kit thats a qwik fix. evidently a previous owner had this problem and put the kit on there got rid of the car and it was sold to me by town toyota in roxbury, new jersey. it blows my mind that i bought it with 65,000 miles and it alredy had a major problem not only once with a previous owner but also happened to me. now the only fix is to replace the head of the motor or even replacing the entire motor.i have come into hard times with being laid off from work and having no means to pay for it or even getting anywhere to find work. i am getting price quotes ranging from 3000 to 8000 dollars. its unbelievable to me theres no recall or compensation. im stuck with a vehicle that i not only have to pay for but cant even drive. something needs to be done. my e-mail is wmickulas@optimum.net

My 2002 ford f150 with a 5.4 l triton v8 engine spit out a spark plug for no apparent reason. my f150 has 117,000 miles on it and has had no mechanical problems over it's life. it is serviced regularly and is used for routine driving. i happened to be 30 miles from home when i heard a loud tapping coming from the engine compartment. knowing a little about engines i checked to see what had happened and noticed that the spark plug had been pushed out of the cylinder head, causing the compression to cause it and the coil pack to continually strike the fuel rail. fortunately i knew a mechanic in the area 1/4 mile from my location and slowly drove to his shop. he said that it was a common problem with ford 4.6, 5.4 and 6.8 triton engines. he added that the aluminum used for the heads was too soft causing the spark plugs to spit out. there was no way of preventing this from happening or predicting when it would happen. the hole for this spark plug had all the treads blown out when the plug came out so i had to leave my truck at the garage for repair. the repair consisted of having to put a steel threaded insert into the head in order to secure the new spark plug / coil pack. the mechanic stated that i should definitly not drive it since it could cause a fire. i could smell the gas fumes from the engine compartment and fully believe this to be a good possibility. i can only imagine if someone was unfamiliar with engines and continued to drive with this condition with the possible result of a fire in the vehicle while their family is aboard. i think ford needs to do a recall on these engines to have them repaired in a safe fashion to prevent a tragedy of a fire while in operation. upon a google search of this topic it looks as though there are a multitude of the same type of incidents with these engines. thank you for your consideration.

In april of 2010 my f-150 truck spit a spark plug while traveling at freeway speed. this was a dangerous situation since it was during rush hour and many 18 wheel trucks were travelling down the i-5 at the time and were reluctant to allow a car to pull over. i had the truck fixed at a aaa approved repair station which removed the remaining spark plug, retapped the block, installed an insert and new plug. then, the same thing happened again in october of 2010 to a different plug. again i had the truck repaired in the same manner. the risk of fire and collision was directly caused by the failure of these spark plugs.

Events leading up to the failure would have to be...everyday driving.... the failure - for the third time now, a spark plug ejected from the cylinder head. consequences - $800 ford dealership parts/labor, plus 2 tow truck services. new plug, insert, and coil.

2002 f-150 history - have had to replace 4 coils. 2 were burned out and 2 were damaged from the spark plug blowing out the hole, this last time just recently (june 2010)

Ford triton v8-4.6l spark plug ejection on #2 plug. this has now happened to me as i was driving at 60mph and it blew it out and the coil spring is now down on top of the piston and smashed within seconds. towed to ford dealership and mechanic admitted this was common but no recalls. he scoped the cylinder with bore scope to find the coil spring smashed so bad it could not be retrieved. estimated cost is $3500.00 plus remove head and clean out. can i claim this back to ford?

I have a 2002 ford f150 supercrew harley davidson edition with a triton 5.4 l engine. i placed the truck in drive and heard a pop and then a continued rhythmic popping. i opened the hood and could tell air was coming from the #4 cylinder. i turned off the engine and investigated further. the spark plug had blown completely out of the head and broke the ignition coil attached to the spark plug wire. so far this is the only incident for me but after researching online, for possible repairs solutions, i found that this is way too common of a problem with these ford engines. i am only glad it happened while i was pulling out of my garage. if that had happened at speed on the highway with the engine temperature up there could have been a serious situation. after reading all the problems so many others have had, i am afraid of when this could happen again! *tr

The spark plugs are being blown out of cylinder heads on all size triton engines. this occurred on my 2002 ford f150, and on my father in-laws expedition. this was on a triton v-8 and v-10s. when i took it to the dealership in ft wayne indiana they informed me that this is common on these engines i also spoke with ford customer care and they claim that this is common. they wont recall it because they claim that this is not a safety issue. i feel that this is a safety issue because it does not shut off the fuel supply to that cylinder. not to mention it just happens with out any sort of warning luckily i was able to limp my truck to the closest ford dealership in my area. with my father in -laws expedition he was just outside of town on his way to arkansas when his blew out. the only remedy is a healy coil or replace the head, thankfully the coil is reasonable in cost but wont last forever. *tr

There was no events leading up to our problem with our pick up truck. i started the truck and heard a loud bang and then the truck sounded like it was missing. we found out that the 3rd spark plug on the passenger side of the motor blew out. it hasn't been fixed yet it happened yesterday 8/17/09. *tr

My 2002 ford f150 truck, with the 5.4 liter engine, has had 2 failures on 2 different occasions in the space of 8 months. each time i was just driving down the highway and a spark plug was blown out of the head, along with the coil. (plug #3 the first time and #7 the last time.) this failure caused an immediate loss of power. luckily the traffic was light each time, being late at night, so i was able to pull safely to the side of the road to determine the problem, whereas if the traffic had been heavy, it could have caused a major accident because of the immediate power loss to the engine, and/or a fire due to it proximity to the injectors. the defects were repaired at the local ford dealership where the truck was purchased using a threaded insert into the old head and a new coil. total cost for both repairs was approximately $600, at my expense. i have emailed ford motor company and they responded saying that because the vehicle was out of warranty and there were no recalls or customer satisfaction programs it would not be fixed by ford. i purchased this vehicle new and it has been meticulously maintained. i have searched the internet and have found that there are thousands of these engines with this problem. it is obvious ford knows of this defect in the heads and refuses to deal with it. if not by recall, it is obviously a factory defect and should be dealt with by ford as the incidents occur. this is a dangerous situation that should be looked into because of the immediate loss of engine power and possibility of fire. *tr

Driving to pick up my son at school for a trip. as i turned left across traffic i heard a loud pop in my 2002 ford f150 and then a loud series of loud pops as my engine continued to run. i pulled to the side of the road and immediately noticed a strong smell of gasoline. i moved the vehicle to a parts store just up the street and was told that my triton v-8 engine had just ejected a spark plug out of the head. i had the vehicle towed to a mechanic who then charged me a great deal to repair the head and replace the spark plug. *tr

2002 ford f150 5.4 liter engine. traveling at approx 25 mph i heard a loud pop from the engine compartment and something hitting the hood. the car started to run rough and gasoline fumes started to fill the passenger compartment. i took the truck to a repair garage who indicated that a spark plug had blown from the head. i was told this is a common ford problem by the garage and subsequent research on the internet has verified this. the head was remilled and the plug and coil had to be replaced. ford does acknowledge an issue and has issued a tsb however warranties do not cover repair. with the plug blown out of the head gas vapors were being injected into the engine compartment and the risk of fire is present. *tr

My 2002 ford f-150 with a 4.6 liter v8 blew out a spark plug while accelerating on a highway entrance ramp. the sparkplug that blew out was the 3rd from the front on the passenger side. the threads for the spark plug in that cylinder are now ruined as well as the coil for that plug. to repair this problem i will probably end up buying a $250 kit to re-tap the head. *tr

I have a 5.4l engine in my ford truck and it keeps stripping out spark plugs. i am not the only one with this problem. there are hundreds if not thousands of people that have posted the same problem on consumer affairs report .com. one guys truck burnt to the ground in 12 minutes and couldn't even get his navigation system out of his vehicle. flames were shooting out of the dash towards him. i have contacted ford with the matter and they state that it is not a safety issue and you are the ones that have to recall it. i would say that if your vehicle can burn to the ground in a matter of minutes, it is a safety problem. they know about this problem and it keeps happening to people all over and they are not doing anything about it. a recall needs to be called on these engines before someone gets killed or hurt in an accident due to the vehicle breaking down in the middle of a highway. it needs to be taken care of before someone gets killed, not after. *tr

I have a f150 2002 ford pickup with 55,000 miles on it. my parents and i had just finished lunch and got in my truck. i turned the key and we heard 2 loud popping noises and the motor started running rough (pulsing). turned the vehicle off, opened the hood only to discover the spark plug had blown out of the #8 hole and was laying down in a crevice on the engine and then rolled out of sight. we had to call a flatbed tow truck and were towed 82 miles back to north country ford, coon rapids, mn on a saturday night where we left the vehicle. on monday morning i found out to my surprise from the service department at north country ford that the extended warranty i have on the truck would not cover the $2,300 cost. north country sent out the head to have the holes drilled larger for the spark plugs. i have driven ford products for over 45 years but this will be the last ford unless ford owns up to this problem and does a recall and credits people like myself who have been inconvenienced. *jb

I purchased a used 2002 ford f150 4x4 from the manager of a ford dealership. within 7 months a spark plug blew, we did not know it was such a problem but we repaired it and a couple of months later it did it again we repaired it thinking maybe we did not repair the first one correctly. then a month later it did it again. i searched web sites and saw it was a greater problem. i took my truck into a ford dealership-(which say they can not really say what the problem is exactly?) it could be from a blown spark plug.. but refuse to give that as a reason? i wonder why? so they have quoted me about $3200.00 in repairs not including labor, which will take it up to about $5000.00!!! i can not afford this as it took everything for me to pay for this truck, which i feel was sold to me by the dealership and even the previous owner of the truck that knew of a problem and did not disclose it to me. so my truck will sit until i decide what to do, as i make monthly car and insurance payments on it. *nm
