Defect SummaryCertain aftermarket fuel filters sold under the purolator brand name, p/n f65277, shipped from january 16 through june 2, 2006, for use on the above listed passenger vehicles. due to incorrect design, the quick connectors may not fully seat with the tube interface, even though the person making the connection may believe that the quick connector is fully attached.
Consequence SummaryFailure of this connection could lead to fuel spillage and, in the presence of an ignition source, a fire could occur.
Corrective SummaryUfi will notify owners and replace the filters free of charge. the recall began on august 4, 2006. owners may contact ufi filters usa at 800-230-5876.
NotesThis recall only pertains to ufi filters usa (purolator) aftermarket fuel filters and has no relation to any original equipment installed on the listed passenger vehicles.customers may contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty: 1-800-424-9153); or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

Defect SummaryFord is recalling certain 1997 through 2003 model year ford f-150, 2004 model year ford f-150 heritage, 1997 through 1999 model year f-250 less than 8,500 lbs. gross vehicle weight rating (gvwr), and 2002 and 2003 lincoln blackwood vehicles manufactured from june 20, 1995, through august 4, 2004, originally sold, or currently registered in, connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia, wisconsin, and the district of columbia. prolonged exposure to road deicing chemicals may cause severe corrosion of the fuel tank straps which secure the tank to the vehicle.
Consequence SummaryAs a result of the corrosion, one or both straps may fail allowing the fuel lines to separate from the tank, or in some cases, causing the tank to contact the ground. either scenario may result in a fuel leak presenting a fire hazard.
Corrective SummaryFord will notify owners and instruct them to take their vehicles to a ford or lincoln dealer to have the fuel tank straps replaced with straps that have increased corrosion protection. early in this campaign, if replacement straps are not available, dealers may install a cable support under the strap as an interim repair or a steel reinforcement over the existing strap as a permanent repair. any repairs will be performed free of charge. the safety recall began on september 16, 2011. owners may contact ford motor company customer relationship center at 1-866-436-7332. ford's recall campaign number is 11s21

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE - STORAGE - TANK ASSEMBLY
EA11006FORD MOTOR COMPANY05/04/201108/19/2011Fuel Tank Strap Failure Due to Corrosion11V385000
One or both of the steel straps holding up the fuel tank and attaching it to the truck frame can corrode and fail (break or separate).if one strap fails, the tank may tilt and drop and possibly contact the road surface.if both straps break, the entire tank may drop to the road.if either failure occurs while the vehicle is being driven, contact with the road can abrade the tank and create a hole from which gasoline can spill.when the tank drops, it remains attached to the vehicle only by the fuel filler hose and/or supply lines, or in rare instances, by the skid plate, if present.in some cases the weight of the tank sufficiently strained the hoses and fittings and caused separation and subsequent fuel leaks from those connections.the fire hazard created by leaking gasoline is increased by the possible presence of sparks created by the metal tank being dragged along the road.corrosion of the straps appears to be caused by prolonged exposure to road deicers, frequently road salt, used to treat snow or ice covered roads.states in which large quantities of deicers are applied to roads during the winter season (salt belt states) account for the predominant portion of strap failures.vehicles in these salt belt states are prone to experience corrosion related failures more frequently and earlier in a vehicle

I was traveling on rt. 64 heading east toward rt 59 in west chicago when i suddenly heard a thud followed by a scraping noise coming from what i first thought was the bed of my 2002 f150. i pulled off the road to check and didn't see anything wrong from the suspected area. i drove a little longer and when the noise wasn't stopping, i pulled over again and noticed one of the brackets holding my gas tank was dragging and the front half of my gas tank was on the ground. the bracket was rusted through and fallen away on one side. i was absolutely shocked at this problem because i had just had my truck in the shop a few months before and there was no mention of any rust issue with the bracket from the shops i had been in. i had the fuel pump and filter replaced in jan. 2010 and there was no mention of rust issues with the bracket then.

The straps holding the gas in place on my 2002 f150 failed on the expressway causing the tank to drop to the ground at 65mph. by the time i was able to stop, a rip in the tank caused all of the fuel to leak out. luckily no sparks of fire. i was never informed of a potential problem from the dealership i regularily get serviced at. i researched this issue online, and found many similar complaints. this could have been tragic/fatal, for me and all the other people driving around me. i am not one to write complaints, but i am upset at the danger this put me in and the time and cost of this failure.

My 2002 ford f-150 has very badly rusted fuel tank straps, why is the recall only up to 2001 f-150's. ford definatley used some cheap meatals while making these f-150's is it possible to include 2002 as well?

Gas tank straps broke, gas tank fell onto pavement. had my truck towed to my ford dealer where they replaced the straps for about $200. if this had happened 5 minutes later, i would have been going 60 mph!

I smelled gas fumes near my 2002 f150 truck. looked underneath to inspect where smell was coming from and found the back brace on the gas tank broken off and rusted out hole in the tank where the brace was supposed to be.
06/08/2011100893
I had driven 4 to 5 miles at 40 to 45 mph and was a 1 block from my destination. i had to stop for a stop sign and make a right turn. while making the turn i thought i hit something, but the street was clear? i turned the radio off and opened the window to here something draging. i stoped at that time maybe 100 yards from where i last stopped. my speed was 20 to 25 mph. i got out and looked under the truck and the gas tank was sitting on the ground.the front of the tank was on the ground the back was still elevated. the filler hose and fuel lines were the only thing holding the tank. both hangers were broken, rusted thru. if i was driving at highway speed, i do not belive i would have a truck left. i also understand that 2001 and earlier f150's were recalled for the tank hangers and i would suggest it be expanded. asap! my ford dealer 4 weeks ealier had inspected my veichle at my request for regular maintenance and repairs before my vacation trips. the service tech never looked at my tank straps even knowing previous years had a problem? ford should have caught this before it happened again. the biggest complaint after is the ford dealership told me it was not a part of any recall and they knew nothing about it. which i do not belive! i have the straps if anyone cares to examine them from your office.

While driving at highway speed my 2002 ford f-150 dropped the fuel tank and the tank was dragged for approximately 1/4 mile wile i attempted to maneuver across three lanes of traffic to the breakdown lane. this created a hole in the tank as it was dragged against the pavement. i had just filled the tank and all 25 gallons was lost on the side of the highway. the vehicle was towed to the dealership and i am waiting for the estimate for repair.

One gas tank strap was found to be rusted and the tank at an angle. it was inspected by a local ford dealer, who found that the gas tank was also rusted and leaking. the gas tank and straps were replaced. because the model year was not in the date range of the recent recall, we had to pay $793. a power steering pump was also leaking and replaced. the gas tank was the major item of concern.

We filled the gas tank of our 2002 ford f-150 and drove about three blocks away from the gas station. the fuel tank dropped off the bottom of the truck and dragged on the ground leaking fuel everywhere. we were lucky it was raining at the time as i believe otherwise the tank would have caused a spark on the road and we'd have had a large fire with my children in the truck. it cost quite a bit of money to repair the truck, pay the fire department for clean up and tow the vehicle. we called our local ford dealer after our mechanic told us he sees f-150's with the fuel tank straps rusted and broken pretty regularly. we were told there was no recall so we would not be reimbursed. now (2 months later) i hear there will be a recall but it will include 1997-2001 trucks only. ours is a 2002 with the exact same problem and i've read ford used the same fuel tank straps on 1997-2003 f-150's.
03/15/2011101250
Straps that secure the fuel tank rusted. one strap rusted compltely through and was hanging loose-- the other was very close to failure. i was able fortunately to get to a garage --and i had the straps replaced. i just recently saw the notice about other instances of this happening and i decided to file a complaint. my truck is one year newer than what is being looked at.

The rear fuel tank strap on my 2002 ford f 150 rusted through causing the tank to come loose. the rust was so bad that there was also a small hole in the fuel tank. i have taken the truck in for repairs and after the tank was removed it was discovered that the brake lines above the tank were also rusted with one starting to leak

I was driving in the urban street and i suddenly hear a noise coming from the engine compartment, like something is leaking from the engine. so i had it towed to my house which is around 2 kms away. we discovered that one of the spark plug just pull out of the engine and it was the one that was making the noice and no power. i brought it to my friend whjo is a mechanic and he discovered that the tread is damaged and he cannot insert the plug anymore. i bought it used on march 2008.

On april 17, i noticed a whistling sound coming from the engine, but could not find the source of the sound, and thought it was a vacuum line leak. i started the truck on the morning of april 14 and i heard a loud popping sound followed by a small black cloud, upon examining under the hood, i found the #3 spark plug on the passenger side had blown out of the hole and the coil had been blown off with it, breaking the plastic that had a steel insert that was screwed down to the block. i tried to replace the spark plug, but could not get it started in to the threads on the head. i found out that o'reily's sells a cylinder head repair kit # 42025 specifically for this problem, it had a insert that you screwed into the head and it was threaded on the inside to accept a extended length spark plug that was included in the kit, i tried this kit @ $64 dollars plus the new coil @ $43, upon completing the work with the kit and the new coil installed, i started the truck and still had the same whistling problem and was losing compression, i contacted a local mechanic, and found out from him that this is a very common problem and he see this same problem once every two weeks or so, i took the truck to him and he worked on it for approx. 6 hours and has the problem fixed, however, he said he couldn't promise that this is not going to happen again, to the same plug or others. if ford knows there is a problem why won't anybody make them fix it and make it right for the little guy (consumers?)

Truck stopped and idling at stop sign followed by loud bang and thumping noise. shut off truck, and looked under hood to find spark plug had blown out of cylinder head along with coil. the smell of fuel was evident from the open hole in the cylinder head. lucky there was no fire when the plug was discharged. ford will not do anything to remedy the problem even though this is very common in these vehicles even with the original spark plugs. i was told that this was my mistake for overtightening the plugs. i have never changed the plugs nor does ford recommend this until 100,000 miles. i believe that the issue is widespread enough to warrant a recall, but this has not happened yet. average people cannot afford the $1,000 - $3,500 repair that is necessary to fix this problem nor should they be required to when it is a problem that ford has known about and refused to fix. ford is providing an inferior product and will not take responsibility for it. *tr

I own a 2002 ford f150 with the triton 5.4l v-8. i have had spark plugs eject from 3 different cylinders now and ford claims it is not a recall issue. this problem has been noted on many of the ford vehicles with the triton 5.4 v-8. when the spark plug is ejected fuel vapor can leak into the engine compartment and possibly cause a fire. i have not had that problem but i am frustrated with ford's unwillingness to cover a known problem with their design. *tr

On 11/1/08 i was driving and heard loud pop from my engine. upon further investigation i saw that the spark plug in the seventh cylinder of my 2002 f150 5.4 triton had blown out of the head and broke the coil. this was preceded by a ticking noise that almost sounded like a exhaust manifold leak. i personally changed my plugs at 100,000 miles and the truck currently has about 125,000 miles on it. while on the internet researching the problem i realized that i'm not alone and this is a nation wide problem with the f150. at this point my truck is sitting in the driveway because the dealership is charging at least $2000 dollars to replace the head. i am researching a cost effective alternative to replacing the parts at this time. *tr

I own a 2002 ford f-150 supercrew 4x4 pickup with 5.4l v8 gas engine and aod automatic transmission. at 48,500 miles on the vehicle the od on/off switch would not stay engaged and was flashing intermittently i took the truck to a local transmission shop who showed me metal shavings in the transmission pan and was told the torque converter must be replaced and the transmission must be rebuilt. i agreed to the work because i need a dependable vehicle. i have never abused the truck in any way and do not haul any type of trailers with the vehicle. *nm
