Defect SummaryFord is recalling certain model year 2005 and 2006 f-150 pick up trucks manufactured at the norfolk assembly plant from november 1, 2004, through june 30, 2005. if the clockspring jumper wire comes in contact with the driver side frontal air bag lower horn plate, the wire insulation may become chafed, creating a potential for a short circuit. if this occurs the air bag warning lamp may illuminate indicating that service is required.
Consequence SummaryThe driver side frontal air bag could inadvertently deploy increasing the risk of injury or loss of vehicle control if occurring while in motion.
Corrective SummaryFord will notify owners and instruct them to take their vehicles to a ford or lincoln/mercury dealer to have a new clockspring jumper wire installed that incorporates a protective mesh cover. repairs will be performed free of charge. the safety recall is expected to begin during march 2011. owners may contact ford motor company customer relationship center at 1-866-436-7332.
NotesFord's recall campaign number is 11s18.owners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov .

Odi opened this investigation based on reports of inadvertent airbag deployment.data provided by ford indicated that the airbag clockspring jumper wire, which is situated inside the steering wheel assembly, was installed in a manner that would allow it to rub (abrade) against a sharp metal edge on the nearby horn plate.because the horn plate is electrically grounded the abrasion of an airbag wire on the sharp edge could cause a short circuit condition.as a result the airbag light may illuminate and/or the airbag may inadvertently deploy.inadvertent deployments are most likely to occur during the airbag system's self-diagnostic test that initiates when the ignition switch is turned on.ford modified the vehicle design in late january 2006 adding a protective tape over the sharp metal edge of the horn plate.ford made additional design changes on my 2007 vehicles to the horn plate, the clockspring jumper, and the connector layouts to further address this issue.odi identified 318 deployment incidents with 121 alleged injury reports from subject vehicles.all but one of the incident and injury reports occurred in vehicles built before the january 2006 modification.in addition, there was one incident and alleged injury reported in the my 2006 mark lt vehicles that share the same design. in letters dated february 21 and april 11, 2011, ford announced a recall of all of the approximately 1.3 million my 2004-2006 f-150 vehicles built prior to january 24, 2006, the date the initial vehicle modification was made.in addition, approximately 14,000 my 2006 mark lt vehicles built prior to january 24, 2006 will also be recalled.vehicles built after that date, which contain the modification, are not within the recall scope.accordingly the investigation is closed.
EA10001FORD MOTOR COMPANY01/13/2010INADVERTENT AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT
Ford reports that inadvertent airbag deployments are most likely caused by the airbag horn mounting plate's sharp metal edge that eventually can chafe/cut the airbag clock spring jumper wire leading to a short-to-ground condition.two hundred twenty five (225) of the 323 reports were for airbag deployments resulting in 66 injuries with the remaining 98 reports for an airbag light illumination condition.injuries include abrasion, contusion and cuts to the arm/hand/face and/or upper body regions.one owner reported a broken tooth and two owners reported a loss of consciousness as a result of the airbag deployment. ford made an interim design change to the horn mounting plate in january 2006 and then major changes to the horn mounting plate, airbag module and clock spring jumper wire designs in june 2006 for the my2007 vehicles.this engineering analysis is opened to ascertain the impact of this defect condition.

I was driving on the highway when all of my gauges went dead including the speedometer, a couple of minutes later they came back on and when they did the airbag warning light started blinking rapidly. a few moments later the gauges went dead again, when they came back on the second time the airbag warning light started blinking rapidly and erratically. since that time my gauges have failed 3 more times with the same behavior from the airbag warning light. i did some research online and found that even though ford has not recalled this problem it has been experienced by hundreds of 2006 ford f150 owners. *tr

This is in reguards to ford's 2006 f150 driver side air bag recall. ford is refusing to give the dealerships the key to unlock the anti theft box that the air bag is in to do the safety recall. they instruct the service team to use a dremel tool. this is not acceptable. service team is not comfortable using a dremel to fix this. any thing done like this to this vehicle will void any and all warranties!!!! safety recall has not been done on this vehicle

I recieved a recall notice (11s18) from ford motor company for air bag deployment issues that could cause injury to driver. i scheduled appointment for this repair and dropped 2006 ford f150 at the dealer on scheduled date. the truck repair couldnot be performed because ford motor company did not supply the parts. i have a hard time getting the truck to the dealer for the day as it is my only transpertation as i work 20 miles away from home. ford motor company should have supplied this part prior to the scheduled date provided to me. i think ford motor company owes me some time and transportation now to get this problem fixed or take the piece of you know what back. i have not had a good to say the least experiance with this ford truck and i am not the only one that feels the way i do about ford.and the problems they are putting on the road and to the customers.
