Odi opened this investigation based on reports of inadvertent airbag deployment.data provided by ford indicated that the airbag clockspring jumper wire, which is situated inside the steering wheel assembly, was installed in a manner that would allow it to rub (abrade) against a sharp metal edge on the nearby horn plate.because the horn plate is electrically grounded the abrasion of an airbag wire on the sharp edge could cause a short circuit condition.as a result the airbag light may illuminate and/or the airbag may inadvertently deploy.inadvertent deployments are most likely to occur during the airbag system's self-diagnostic test that initiates when the ignition switch is turned on.ford modified the vehicle design in late january 2006 adding a protective tape over the sharp metal edge of the horn plate.ford made additional design changes on my 2007 vehicles to the horn plate, the clockspring jumper, and the connector layouts to further address this issue.odi identified 318 deployment incidents with 121 alleged injury reports from subject vehicles.all but one of the incident and injury reports occurred in vehicles built before the january 2006 modification.in addition, there was one incident and alleged injury reported in the my 2006 mark lt vehicles that share the same design. in letters dated february 21 and april 11, 2011, ford announced a recall of all of the approximately 1.3 million my 2004-2006 f-150 vehicles built prior to january 24, 2006, the date the initial vehicle modification was made.in addition, approximately 14,000 my 2006 mark lt vehicles built prior to january 24, 2006 will also be recalled.vehicles built after that date, which contain the modification, are not within the recall scope.accordingly the investigation is closed.

The agency has closed this investigation based on its review of complaint reports, discussions with complainants and field and technical data provided by ford.the subject vehicles are 1/2 ton pickup trucks and are natural gas vehicles (ngv) that are fueled by gasoline or compressed natural gas.the agency has received reports alleging improper operation of the natural gas fuel pressure regulator allowing release of excess amounts of natural gas into the engine compartment.ford reports that the regulator contains an over pressure relief valve that will vent natural gas should the pressure exceed a set threshold.the complaint reports and data reviewed by the agency indicate that an improperly operating pressure regulator can result in an overpressure condition and activate the regulator pressure relief valve.the released natural gas is directed through a vent hose that discharges the natural gas in the vicinity of the right front wheel house and away from the engine compartment's extremely hot areas/surfaces.owners are normally aware of this problem by the presence of an illuminated warning light inside the vehicle, odor of natural gas or the sound of venting gas.when the operator turns the engine off, the natural gas supply tank solenoid will close and the regulator will not release natural gas.at vehicle restart, the solenoid valve will remain closed to prevent leakage and the vehicle will only operate in the gasoline mode.a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

I own a 2004 ford lgt convtnl f-150 truck and i have a constantly illuminated air bag warning lamp on my vehicle since october of 2010. i understand there is an expanded recall on over a million vehicles that experienced this problem however my vehicle is currently not included in the recall. what options do i have with the manufacturer so that they correct the deficiency if it is diagnosed with this defect? thanks
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Was driving home from work and my rear driver's side window dropped to the bottom for no apparent reason. i don't even use the window much. pulled off door cover and found cable apart and wound and tangled behind motor. called my buddy to see if he had it happen to his and before i could say anything he said he just came in from cramming a board in his rear widow make it home. they seem to be really poorly made.

Turn signals fail intermittently. sometimes hitting the brake pedal, jiggling turn signal switch or parking, putting the vehicle in p then into d will get the signals to work. dealer cannot duplicate the problem (hence the intermittent), but the problem is not fixed. dealer will not replace parts. the problem began oct. 2005 and continues. the signals will work for days at a time, then fail for hours at a time. this is an accident and traffic citation waiting to happen. *jb

No access to spare tire: 2004 ford f-150 heritage (2003 body style) spare stored under truck bed lowers using key and winch.the winch and key are supposed to engage via a star shaped indentation. if this does not engage one cannot lower the spare tire for use. the replacement (ford refuses to pay for)comes re-designed so that one actually inserts the lowering rod into the winch.there is no star to strip out or be worn down. with a flat tire on a busy road and one under the truck trying to access a spare tire constitutes a life threatening situation. ford has sold the re-design as a replacement and this in itself is an admission of a defective product design. dealership informed me that they simply cut the tire free and replace the winch at customer cost. *tr
PARKING BRAKE
02/21/201173000
I drive a 2004 ford f-150 heritage with only 73,000 miles that has never been taken off road or towed any heavy weight and has had regular maintenance. two days ago while i was driving down the street, my passenger side rear wheel locked up, making it difficult to steer and after stopping the truck would then not move as the wheel remained locked. the vehicle was towed to a local repair shop where the licensed mechanic told me that my emergency brake system had essentially fell apart (exploded) and that all the loose parts floating around in the wheel had jammed the wheel. he claims that ford used cheap parts in the emergency brake systems as people who have automatic transmissions rarely use them. my vehicle is a manual transmission so the emergency brake is a necessity. i asked him if this could have happened if i were driving down the interstate at 70 mph and he responded absolutely. which means i could have lost control of my vehicle and possibly flipped. he and my husband informed me that even with any possible wear, these parts should not break. the mechanic had also informed me that i was not the first customer he had seen with this issue. i then proceeded to look on the internet and found several complaints about the same issue. ford refused to replace the e-brake and i had to pay for the repair and other damaged parts inside the wheel. but my real concern is one of safety as i no longer feel safe driving this truck since i know it has been built with less than quality parts. i believe this is a safety issue that is going to cost someone serious injury if this should happen at higher speeds. i should also state that i had a multipoint inspection performed on the vehicle 1 week previous by a ford dealer and was informed that the emergency brake was good. i also found a 2008 tsb for the parking brake on ford f-150s of this year that dealt with the noise they make that i think is awarning that this is about to happen. but my truck never gave me a warning.

My 2004 ford 150 heritage pick-up has serious transmission slippage- it also wont go into reverse at times- i mentioned this at the ford deal while under warranty, and they nothing was wrong with the truck- the transmission starting banging into when 1st put into d- and now has severe slippage in it- the list ed incident date below- is when i 1st started to notice erratic transmission behavior. *tr

My accident in a parking deck is on security recording at the beau rivage casino in biloxi, ms i think. ford cannot explain why a wheel broke off at 8 mph. i caught an 18 h x 6 w x 24' l steel traffic control device with the outside edge of my front driver's side tire. i don't know how fast i was going but the tape does. i think it less than 10 mph. i am pretty sure i was braking when it happened. i was on a down ramp and there were other cars. i was taking care, but looking at another car pulling in next to me when the accident occurred. it's on tape. anyway, my front wheel snapped off. ford has a non explanation. they agree this is not supposed to happen under the conditions it did, and since it may have been taped...the beau won't give it up to me but maybe you....have given an alternative explanation that makes no sense. according to ford, both astro ford in d'iberville, ms and the mysterious adjuster (apparently he is not compuncted to state his findings, just judgment) who seemingly concurs with astro, there is a part missing that had to have been left out in one of two maintenance (brake and align) jobs, the most recent of which was more than 20000 miles ago. when asked if i could operate the truck with the part missing, they call it a key, the answer was a definitive and unanimous no. would the tire wear funny? they say yes, and agree it is not. there is nothing, when you look closely at this truck, that would indicate any form of hard living. the spare tire is unused. the reason why i know 20000 since anything is because that's when the tire was mounted on the wheel that failed and other than washing it, that's the last attention that wheel had. i have that record. neither the brakes or alignment were done since. *tr
