In a december 3, 2007 letter, ford advised nhtsa that it will conduct a safety recall to replace the cam position sensor (cps) in approximately 1.2 million subject vehicles to address reports of engine stalling.a new design cps with improved performance and durability will be installed as a remedy.owner notifications will begin in december 2007. the subject vehicles are durable, full-sized, medium duty trucks commonly used for commercial purposes, rescue/emergency response, and commercial or recreational towing.cps failure is comparable to unexpectedly turning the key off since the signal it produces is vital to the electronic engine control system.cps signal loss terminates fuel injection resulting in an engine stall.once stalled, the engine may restart right away, or may restart after a delay (typically 5 to 10 minutes), or may not restart at all.in addition to exposing the driver and other motorists to crash risk due to loss of motive power or vehicle disablement, engine stalling also effects the power assisted steering and braking. through consumer interviews, odi determined that cps failures occurred without any form of warning, at any vehicle speed (50% at highway speeds), and under any driving condition, such as accelerating.consumers reported that about a third of the vehicles failed to restart, with another third reporting delayed restarting.half the vehicles that did restart experienced another stall on the same or a subsequent drive cycle (before cps replacement) re-exposing those consumers to the risks associated with a stalling event.in their voq reports, half of the odi complainants described difficulty controlling the vehicle due to lose of power assist systems, especially those who were towing at the time of the incident. the one alleged injury incident occurred in an intersection when a subject vehicle stalled while turning across oncoming lanes of traffic.although unsubstantiated, the complainant alleged an injury to a child occupant during odi's interview.the other crash allegations mostly involved low speed, loss of control incidents often caused by lack of power assist; no injuries are reported in these incidents, and property damage, if any, was minimal.consumers also reported other incidents with significant safety risks, such as disablement in a lane or on a shoulder of a high-speed roadway or interstate, or extended disablement in remote areas during severe weather conditions. the population above is ford's estimate of the 1.4 million subject vehicles produced that are currently registered.the ford complaint and warranty counts noted above are current as of ford's last submission dated june 21, 2007; they do not include f-450, f-550, or econoline counts as these products were not formally within scope of the investigation when failure information was requested.warranty data analysis indicates that about half the claims involved a stall while driving event ( ford's assessment) and that poor cps durability was a longstanding concern.ford reported that the new cps design should meet or exceed their 10 year, 150k mile life expectancy design requirement.

The cam position sensor (cps) provides a critical signal to the subject vehicle (sv) engine management system, the loss of which results in an engine stall.during pe06-011, ford stated in their response to odi that it is continuing to investigate allegations of cps related engine stall and further advised that an update will be provided upon completion of the investigation.ford data shows that 20% of the 716,000 svs are equipped with manual transmissions which are capable of back-driving the engine when a stall occurs; power assisted steering and braking are not lost during engine back-drive.ford data also indicates that back-drive occurs in automatic transmission vehicles above certain road speeds.the manufacturer reports noted reference 755 unique vehicles; 2 are duplicative of odi reports.in its review of customer and field reports, ford identified some 800 reports alleging one or more engine stalls potentially related to a cps failure in these 755 vehicles (ford

When driving at normal speeds in a 2001 f-250 sd 5.4 liter, slowed to make a stop and then proceeded on and there was a loud pop and the truck started running rough and making a lot of noise from under the hood. it turned out that a spark plug had blown out of the cylinder wall causing the noise and rough running. these plugs had just bee replaced about 1 year ago. the truck had to be towed to a repair shop almost 100 miles to be repaired. from what i understand from my mechanic this is an ongoing problem with this engine.

I was driving home friday january8th at 7:30 pm when my spark plug blew out of motor while driving, shooting fuel out of cylinder as coil was still connected and arcing on motor.i lost power and had to get to side of road i could not fix because threads of cylinder head were damaged when blowout occurred.fortunatly this happened within a couple mile of my home, if this were to occur on highway with traffic around the loss of power and potential for fire would have been very dangerous! *tr

We have a f250 2001 v10 pickup that has had 2 spark plug ejection from the drivers side head of the engine. this we were told by the mechanics at our local ford dealer shop at our 2 diff ford dealers is inherent in all triton motors. this head problem should be aa safety recall. when the second one happened we were 200 miles from home and had to smell gas fumes for 200 miles to get it back to the dealer to get it repaired. luckily the spark plug had been ejected from the coil assembly if it had stayed on it would have started a fire. there is a serious defect in the cylinder head and from the many mechanics that i have spoken to they all state it is from only 2 or 3 threads per spark plug holding the plugs in place. please recall all trition motors to have this taken care of. *tr

When i started my vehicle the #1 plug ejected from my ford 5.4 engine. the plug broke the coil and struck the fuel rail putting a dent in it and partially dislodge it. this is my first ejection. my shop replaced the threads in the head, installed a new spark plug and coil, then they straighten up everything. i am now scared to drive it as i am 70 years old and had planned to travel. *tr

On sunday, august 14, 2008 i was driving my 2001 ford f-250 with a 5.4 liter engine and i heard a loud pop which was followed by a loss of power and a noise that sounded like a large exhaust leak. when i opened the hood i noticed one of the spark plugs had blown out of the head and had broken the coil, ripped the spark plug boot and stripped the head. this is the second time in 1 1/2 years that i have had a spark plug blow out of the head. (these were two different spark plugs). this is a costly repair and many others have had the same problem. i contacted ford and they told me there was nothing they could do to help me and then tried to sell me a new vehicle instead of fixing the one i have. *tr

I have a 2001 ford f-250 with the triton 5.4l v8. the problem i have is the spark plugs blowing out i have had 3 total sense march. the first one happened at about 120,000 miles in march there is a slight ticking noise that comes from the engine then the boom from the spark plug blowing out with a sudden loss of power. the 1st to go was the number 7cylinder followed by number 1 and finally number 3 cylinders. the second and third happened about 200 miles from each other at the 143,000 mile mark this weekend. friday august 29 the second one blew out on the interstate going normal speed with no indication of a problem. the truck was towed to wade ford in smyrna to be repaired. the truck was repaired with in several hours and i was on the road again $750 later. i was headed to florida at the time and still made the trip. on sunday the 31st the third plug blew out leaving me on the side of the road in alabama, again with no indication of a problem. this seems to be a repetitive problem that i have had, the truck has not been abused and has had regular maintenance. the engine has never been stressed or strained as tends to happen with superduty trucks. i have read a lot on the internet of the problem affecting many others around the country, many with the same order of plugs blowing-out. the dealership does not seem to recognize the problem, and say they have never seen it happen. this is a ford problem that they are not dong anything about. its a costly problem for the owners for a problem that they can not see coming or prevent. is there anything that can be done? *tr

I have a 2001 ford f-250 with a triton v10 engine when i was driving i had a spark plug blow out of the engine block and was laying on top of the engine sparking. i have sent an email to ford and when they replied to me they said that there was nothing that they could do about it and that it was not a safety issue. well i my self feel that it is a safety issue when there is an open spark on top of the engine sparking next to the fuel line. i have done research on this topic for a long time hoping that it would not happen to me well it has happened and i am afraid to drive my truck now that i see that there is a spark next to a fuel line. ii really hope that people will not have to die from this defective aluminum head that ford uses on these engines to prove that it is truly a safety issue. not to mention that there are ford owners all around the world that are having to pay thousands of dollars to fix something that is not at all their fault. *tr

We have a 2001 ford f250 sd, 5.4 liter triton v8. there was an awful ticking noise for a few weeks and on monday, july 4th, while restarting the truck it made a huge pop noise followed by a very loud tick that sounded like an exhaust leak. it was so loud that my 2 year old son was scared. after looking under the hood, i saw the spark plug had been dislodged from the head, the threads were stripped and i cannot repair it myself!! then after contacting ford and many auto shops we learned this will cost us over 500 dollars and that they have serviced over 10 vehicles in the last month with the same problem!! what? and after research have noticed that there have been complaints dating back to 2006 and no recourse by owners! what? this safety issue needs to be fixed! it is so dangerous. we are repairing our vehicle using the mechanic that ford recommended, he will be changing the coil and adding pins to it to ensure that it won't happen again for that plug, but the others...keeping our fingers crossed that nothing else happens before ford gets their stuff together and fixes this!!

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - ENGINE

On vacation in maine with my 2001 ford f250 super duty i was driving down a very narrow, heavily wooded two lane road at about 20 mph, suddenly and without warning a loud bang under the hood occured. difficult to pull over safely and investigate. i had to drive several hundred feet to try to get on a straight away for safety. there were several log trucks that had to pass as well as other traffic. i discovered that the #6 spark plug had blown out of its hole and destroyed the threads, coil pack, and spark plug. after getting the truck to a repair facility the owner/mechanic informed me that this 5.4l triton engine does this all the time. he informed me that he repairs two or three of these a week, in fact there is a repair kit available from most auto part stores. doing some research after getting home i discovered that this is a chronic ford problem that they refuse to address. i will be selling this truck because it is a huge safety issue for me. i dont need to be stranded on back country roads or interstates with any of the other 7 spark plugs ready to launch from my engine without warning or cause.

My 2001 f 250 super duty pick up with a 5.4 motor spit out the number 3 spark plug. it caused me to have my vehicle towed, the # 3 coil pact replaced along with all the spark plugs and the coil pact boots. i heard a loud pop which caused me to pull over immediately , it sounded like a real bad exhaust leak. i have never had anything like this happen to me in 28 years of driving and working on vehicles. the dealer have to put in a heli coil and replace parts as stated.

2001 ford f-250 sd 6.8l v-10, spark plug on the number eight cylinder blew out of the head while driving at approx. 15-20 mph. the threads on the cylinder head are non-existent at this point, the coil was destroyed, and the vehicle is undrivable. after researching, i have found this to be a known problem on several models from ford. the vehicle is currently awaiting inspection and repair by a local ford dealership. i have been told by the service writer that it is a known problem, but that ford will not provide a covered repair. i have been told that if the head is repairable without removal from the vehicle, the cost will be approx. $750.00 with no guarantee that it will not re-occur. if the cylinder head must be removed, the cost is between three and four thousand dollars. i will be retaining the old parts. *tr

My 2001 f250 with 5.4l triton engine has blown out 4 spark plugs over the last year. each repair has been around $600. this has to be a defect. ford didn't advise me that this was a common issue. had i known, i would have put in a different motor or heads as i have spent that much in repairs and towing. *tr

Ford needs to do a recall on the cam position sensor. if this part fails on the super duty diesel at highways speeds, a crash could occur resulting in serious injury or death to the occupants of the vehicle or any other vehicle that the super duty may come in contact with. i was driving at 75 mph when the engine suddenly died due to cps failure. the truck slowed so fast i almost hit the windshield. the engine wouldn't restart. other motorist saw me in trouble and let me pull to the right shoulder. steering the truck required superman strength. i scrapped my truck against the guard rail. fortunately i wasn't towing 6,000 lb like i normally do at that time. now i keep a spare cps and a 10 mm socket in my truck.

1.1 million ford 7.3l turbo diesels recalled under ford recall 07s57 for model years 1997-2003 for camshaft position sensor problem which causes engine to cut off while running; however when i take my 2001 f250 diesel in with same engine exhibits same problems; ford dealer told me my truck wasn't covered by the recall because of the color of the sensor that was in my truck. i had it repaired anyhow because i have been experiencing the problem for 8-10 months and have been extremely cautious when using the truck crossing intersections and the like due to the engine cutting out. i think it ridiculous that they restrict the recall even though mine exhibits the identical symptoms. while an inexpensive repair, i doubt i shall buy another ford truck now after having owned 3 of them in the past. *tr

I have had to replace 4 cam position sensors in my 2001 ford f250. all of the sensors failed while driving which created a dangerous situation because when they die the vehicle acts as if the key has been turned off which means you lose everything including power steering and power brakes. i feel very lucky that nobody was injured and also lucky that i was not pulling a trailer at the time. *tr

I recently bought a used 2001 ford f-250 with the 7.3 diesel from the local ford dealer. it had a recent computer reflash, should have told me something. anyway the cps was bad in it. it would shut down, sometimes starting right back, sometimes after a few minutes. i got tired of the run around so i put a new cps in it myself. i have had no more problems, no thanks to ford. *jb

The cam position sensor ( cps ) on 2001 ford 7.3l diesel failed. this can cause loss of control as the engine dies thus leaving no power steering or brakes. *tr

Drive a 2001 ford f250 4wd stretch cab pickup with a 7.3l diesel engine. it is used primarily for towing a travel trailer. the truck is well maintained and has just over 55,000 miles on it. recently on a trip to nevada, without our travel trailer, the truck acted as if it were not getting adequate fuel 3 times and the engine shut off completely twice. all of this on a busy interstate highway. fortunately, when it shut off i was able to kick it into neutral and restart the engine. when i took the truck to my dealer a part was replaced and i was told that my problem was not uncommon with this diesel engine. part replaced was a camshaft sensor. don't know what happened to the defective part. cost of repair - parts and labor - $261.71 - partly covered by an extended warranty that i had in place. anyway, had no prior warning of this tendency and the timing of the stalling and shut downs was scary and dangerous. i consider my wife and i to be extremely fortunate and we are glad that we were not towing our travel trailer at the time of the failures. *nm

Within 6000 miles of tune-up from ford dealership in salem, va. a spark plug on passenger side 3rd back came out of head of engine causing loud noises and damage to head , was taken to garage and was told by them and numerous other garages i called that it would cost 800.00 plus if was fixed on vehicle by tool from snap-on and no guarantee , to 2000.00 plus dollars for head to be taken off vehicle and still no guarantee because of aluminum heads on a 2001 f-250 super duty truck and i am on a fixed income and according to other garages this is an ongoing problem with ford trucks with 5.4 liter motors. *nm

The # 7 spark plug blew out of my 2001 ford f250 super duty (5.4l engine). it cost $1761.61 from the dealership to fix this problem. the plugs were original from the factory. there was 74254 miles on the vehicle and ford does not recommend plugs until 100,000 mi. further research has shown that this seems to be a very common problem with this engine and ford dealership claims they do not know anything about it. i contacted ford motor co. and got a similar response. this can be a life threatening problem if the plug damages the fuel lines and starts a fire. i was lucky to not have this happen this time, but i have at least 7 more chances for this to occur. ford needs to be held liable for this problem. please help!! i see by the next questions that a death might get results. i hope this is not the case. *nm

Driving on the road, and this god awful loud noise from under the hood. according to the dealer a spark plug blew out of the head. the correction was to replace the entire head, the patch fix would have cost 1,000.00, but with no warranty. i have a friend who works at ford in michigan and this is why i am in touch with you people. nhtsa action #dpo5005 addresses the problem about the aluminum heads and the problems with plugs ejecting from the heads. the dealer has done all the work on this truck, and this repair was 3,509.80. ford should step up to the plate , an agree there has been a problem. if this week the other side goes that will be 7,000.00 and not even a new engine, just 2 heads if nothing else happens. *jb
