Odi has received 78 consumer complaints of severe suspension and steering wheel shimmy and oscillations commencing after the subject vehicles traveled over an uneven road surface. the majority of these incidents occurred at speeds of 50 mph or greater.thirteen of the complaints received by odi allege loss of steering control and that the vehicle changed driving lanes uncontrollably.four of the complaints received by odi allege that the vehicle left the road surface as a result of the violent suspension and steering wheel oscillations.in one case the consumer alleges that after the vehicle left the road surface, it crashed into a wooded area.additionalfactors contributing to the opening of this ea were early warning field reports, submitted by ford, describing suspension shimmy / oscillationsand a ford tsb (07-10-10) describing the suspension shimmy issue and how to repair the problem.ford has described shimmy as self-excited oscillation of the steering wheels with accompanying wheel tramp.this pe has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea) to determine if the shimmy condition that occurs on the subject vehicles creates a condition where the vehicle becomes difficult to control or startles the driver, thus presenting a safety risk.

This investigation was opened based on 78 consumer complaints of severe suspension and steering wheel oscillations after the subject vehicles traveled over an uneven surface.odi was concerned about these complaints because many of them alleged loss of control and the loss of control occurredat speeds above 50 miles per hour.at the time these complaints were received, odi was also aware of the tsb 07-10-10 and early warning field reports that discussed the shimmy condition on the subject vehicles.since opening this investigation, odi has confirmed, based on consumer complaints, warranty data, testing conducted by vrtc, and odi inspection of complaint vehicles, that the owners of the subject vehicles are experiencing shimmy events on their vehicles.however, odi has also confirmed that owners typically do not maintain their tires at the pressures recommended by ford on the tire label.further, odi has found that in order for shimmy to occur, tire pressures must be substantially below (at least 20%) those specified on the vehicle tire label.odi considers these unsafe tire conditions to be the result of one of three typical situations.the tires are being improperly maintained, the owners are intentionally setting the tire pressures low to enhance ride quality, or aftermarket tires (not designed for use on the vehicle) are installed to change the appearance or function of the vehicle.the subject vehicles are intended and designed to be used as heavy duty vehicles and as such require that the tires be capable of handling the loads for which the vehicle is designed and marketed.in order for the tires to be capable of handling these loads, the proper tire pressure must be maintained.in light of the information gathered in this investigation and ford's agreement to notify subject vehicle owners (now and every two years until the vehicles reach ten years from their production date) about the importance of maintaining proper tire pressures on their vehicles, further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.for additional information, see the attached closing report.

I have a 2005 ford f-350 4x4 crewcab diesel which exhibits severe front end shimmy and steering wheel vibration when going over rough roads or cattle guards. this is so severe that i have to come to a complete stop in order to continue. ford is aware of this problem but apparently won't issue a recall to fix it. it is an extremely dangerous situation. *tr

2005 ford f350 4x4 p/up truck violently shakes. starts out after hitting small bump or bumps and builds into violent shaking from one end of the truck to the other. only way to stop it is to come to immediate complete stop. very scary on the freeway. shaking strong enough that anything on dashboard or console is thrown to floor, steering wheel is almost pulled from hands if you don't grab on tight. happens irregularly and without notice. ford had been unwilling to fix, says that i changed parts to after market and will not look at it. i told them problem started before parts change and that parts change was in attempt to fix. that was over a year ago.. now i find out it has been happening with many similar vehicles, received a letter from ford and now they are willing to take a look.. i changed shocks, radius arms, springs, had alignment, no change. slight relief when i changed tires (same spec as manufacturers), but after 8-12 months wear, 8000 miles, shaking back again. started shaking at approx. 12,000 miles. truck now has 32,000 miles. *tr

I have a 2005 ford f-350 pick up truck. i have had a problem with severe vibrations since shortly after i purchased the vehicle. i have had the truck to the dealer many times for this problem without resolution. i recently received a letter from ford about this shimmy problem. the letter recommends maintaining tire pressure. todate that has not resolved my problem. at one point, i replaced all the tires on the truck at the dealer (they told me that the problem was the way they were wearing) but with new tires and the proper inflation, the problem still occurred. as you are obviously aware there is a problem, i think you need to know that the tires are not the sole cause as it has not fixed my vehicle. *tr

2005 ford f-350 super duty. when driving at highway speeds and crossing rough bridge abutments or other uneven surfaces, whole truck begins to shake uncontrollably and sometimes lasts for several minutes before settling down. this is a sever problem as i'm unable to steer or control the truck. i've complained several times to my dealer and they say there's nothing wrong with the truck. i disagree and believe this is a real safety hazard. *tr

2005 ford f350 pick up truck shakes violently in the front end at speeds exceeding 55 mph after crossing over uneven surface. has happened over 25 times and is very dangerous. will only stop wobbling when it gets below approx. 30-25 mph. i've had many instances where i had to get the truck to the shoulder to prevent being hit from behind or side swiped and still get the truck down to 25 mph to get it to quit. started several months ago, found online that it is not too uncommon and never knew where to go until now. i am scared to drive this truck, however, it is my only means of transportation to work etc. the truck has been to the shop, $900 later and truck shook that evening on highway 101. the ford store where i purchased it said it really isn't fixable.... whatever that means! *tr

I own a 2005 ford f-350 4x4 6.0 diesel. it has 63,000 miles on it. on many occasions the steering wheel has shimmied or oscillated violently to the point i almost lost control of the truck. this is very dangerous. when the front wheels hit a bump or pothole, with a very small amount of turning the vehicle to the left or right such as going around a curve, the front wheels have started to violently shimmy or oscillate causing the steering wheel to violently shimmy back and forth. this usually occurs at speeds above 40 mph. four times i have almost lost control of the truck. once the truck turned left into an oncoming lane but fortunately there where no oncoming vehicles at that moment. i had to slow down to about 25-30 mph and move to the shoulder of the road to gain control of the vehicle. this is a serious problem with this vehicle especially in heavy traffic or on two lane mountain roads. i originally complained about this after i purchased the vehicle in february 2005, and was told the truck was within specs and there was nothing to be done. i request the nhtsa look into this. i have discussed this with other owners and they too have had similar loss of control problems from steering wheel shimmy or oscillation. i believe there are other trucks that have the same problem. *tr
04/05/2009350001
This problem is not isolated to a particular day or a particular incident; it is a chronic problem that happens when my vehicle hits a hole in the pavement or a hard bump when traveling at 50 mph or more. my vehicle is a 2005 ford f350 4x4 and the front end begins to shake violently and in my opinion could cause a head on collision. i have spoken to the ford dealership and they said there is no recall for this problem. they offered to install a heavier duty steering stabilizer, which would cost me 380.00, which they say usually helps this problem. this is obviously a design flaw by ford, and they are dragging their feet because they don't want to admit the problem or pay for their mistake. someone will surely be killed, due to this problem, and the government needs to take steps to make sure these trucks are fixed by ford at ford's expense. this is not just a problem for my truck, but is apparently an epidemic. someone needs to do their job and see that this is corrected. *tr

My ford f-350 has severe vibration and steering issues. i received the letter about these issues april 2009. shortly there after while on the highway at 65mph the truck started vibrating uncontrollable. about the time i got it slowed down i heard a loud pop in the passengers side front end. this was about april 25 2009. on may 14 2009 i went to ford for my oil change. they discovered the front passengers universal joint is broken. i was not in four wheel drive when this loud pop occurred. but i did almost lose control prior to hearing it pop, my speed at the time of pop was about 35mph. i keep the tire pressure up, by checking it almost every time i add fuel. and the tires are checked at each oil change, every 3,000 miles. the letter i received from ford, says to check tire pressure. the tire pressure was good when i checked it shortly after hearing the universal joint pop. the size of tire is the same as the ones installed at the factory. i do not have any suspension modifications. after the ford dealer told me i need a new universal joint, i took the truck to another alignment shop. he had a f250 he was working on that had about the same thing happen. and told me this has been happening alot. after which i called ford, they will not warranty the issue, although it sounded to me that the operators were well aware these trucks shimmy and then pop there universal joints. i am fearful to drive the truck, as i think next time i may lose all control. ford will not warranty the issue because the warranty is expired, but the operators told me i should sell it, as they have lots of complaints like this. i would not want to hurt somebody else by passing this problem truck on, but i do not have finances to scrap it ether. please help me. thank you *tr

 1. if i drive over a bump in the road at 50mph or faster. 2. front end shimmy. the front of my truck shakes violently and the brakes hardly work to get the truck slowed down. the shaking is so violent that i lose control of the truck. it has shaken my truck so violently that it has damaged my truck. i have had it happen about 12 - 15 times. i can't drive over 50mph or it still happens. i have almost caused 3 accidents as a result of this happening. it happened once with my wife driving with our kids and she went over the centerline and almost hit a semi head on. 3. i have taken the truck to the dealership to get repaired and they tell me nothing is wrong with my truck. i purchased the truck new in 2005 and it first started happening at 10,000 miles. truck currently has 34,000 miles and the problem is still happening. i called ford customer care today because i received a letter from them about the problem. they told me that they documented the problem, but because the truck is out of warranty i would have to pay for it to be fixed. it should be noted that i started taking my truck into the ford dealership back in 2006 to have this problem addressed. i have asked ford to look into this problem maybe 4 or 5 times before i got this letter. i also did a google search today about this problem and you can see that many people post online about this very problem. hope this becomes a recall so i can keep me and my family safe. thank you. *tr

Major front end shimmy or oscillation resulting in total loss of steering and braking. near crash on several occasions. has been checked by dealer and private mechanic. ford says it is tire pressure or balance mechanic says tires are balanced and inflated correct. unknown why this happens? has happened many times since new and checked as many times. cost alot of money to keep checking. *tr

A worsening lateral shimmy in the front suspension. this is usually brought on when an inconsistence in the road surface is crossed over. ford has made numerous attempt to correct this on our vehicle, but to no avail. corrections only last a couple of thousand miles and then return. *tr

Occasionally, at interstate speeds only (65 - 75 mph), front end shakes violently when crossing over a small change in surface elevation. (for example: transition from road surface to bridge surface) it is not predictable. vehicle steering is compromised and the only way to regain proper control is to allow the truck to slow to approximately 50 mph when violent shaking will subside. vehicle has been inspected by one independent shop and one ford dealership (where vehicle was purchased). neither could identify the source of the problem. truck is stock with no modifications. most recent events occurred two consecutive days traveling interstate 65 between nashville and southern kentucky. two different locations, one northbound and one southbound. *tr

I have a 2005 ford f350 superduty(diesel). the truck has an uncontrollable front end vibration/oscillation, whenever i hit a bump in the road, usually 50mph or faster. when it does this there is nothing that i can do to stop it. the only thing that makes it go away is to slow down, almost to a complete stop. this is very dangerous especially on the freeway. i have become afraid to drive on the freeway. as i have done some research on this subject, i have found that many people are having this problem with this model truck. i am worried about my safety and that of my family. *tr

To bruce york and richard boyd i am so thankful someone is doing something about this problem. i know for a fact this situation with this steering problem far exceeds anything ford is willing to admit. my case; i have owned my 2005 ford f-350 king ranch 4x4, vin #, sense february 11, 2005. this truck has earned its two nicknames, rhubarb express and #!*% piece of #@^%$. this truck has been nothing but a nightmare for our family. my wife and i can't begin to count how many times this truck has gone out of control and left us in the ditch. we have lost control of this truck nearly every time either one of us has driven it. typical situation, we are driving along the freeway at a safe speed. we might feel a little bump on the road then the steering wheel starts to shimmy then begins to pull from your hands in a hard shimmy. from the time you hit the bump to the time the truck is ripping your hands from the steering wheel is less the 2 seconds. the oscillations are more the 90 degrees from side to side on the steering wheel. these oscillations will continue from your original driving speed until the truck is brought to a complete stop. this usually means driving off the side of the freeway or road onto the shoulder. on many occasions there is no shoulder and we have stopped in the road. on other occasions we have had to stop in the middle of the freeway as there were semi trucks in the slow lane. i mean 65 to 0 miles an hour in the middle of a los angeles freeway! we also have countless memories of sliding to a stop in the rhubarb, dust flying, off the edge of the freeway. all while calling ford and begging them to fix it! we had this truck in the dealer many times to have it repaired. *tr

I have a 2005 ford f350 super duty, with dangerous front end problems. when going at highway speeds (55-70mph), and hitting a bump in the road(even worse while going through a slight curve) the front end starts to shake violently. this oscillation is so strong, that it almost yanks the steering wheel out of my hands. the only thing that makes it stop is to slow down to about 20mph. very dangerous to do on the interstate!!! after doing some research and reading some of the online forums for ford truck owners, i find that this is a major problem and also a very common one to boot. the most worrisome part of this problem, is that is very unpredictable. sometimes i can go a month or so with no problems. however, this past weekend, it did this three times during a 10 mile trip home from a restaurant. this is a major problem that ford motor co. should be responsible for correcting. if something is not done soon many people could get hurt, and god forbid, be killed. *tr

I purchased a new 2005 f-350 . since day one it has had a violent front end shake. it doesn't matter if you hit a bump or not. i will not drive it any more. i have taken it to the dealership 15 times and the have replaced the steering box, front coil springs, damper, shocks and adjusted the tire pressure. nothing seems to fix the problem. then i took it to an off road specialty store and spent $6200.00 on a 4inch suspension lift, new 35 tires ,dual stabilizing bars and new coil springs. the truck still shakes , bounces , shimmies and hops. i am forced to buy another vehicle (never ford again). i am very concerned for the safety of everyone on the road if ford does not fix the problem immediately. *tr
