Defect SummaryThis is not a safety recall in accordance with the safety act. however, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. vehicle description: 1990-1993 ford f-series vehicles equipped with dual fuel tanks and 4.9, 5.0,5.8, or 7.5 liter gasoline fueled engines. some vehicles can experience a cross tank fuel flow condition due to a damaged check valve in the fuel pump/sender assembly. fuel may be supplied from one tank and some or all of the unused fuel may be returned to the other tank.
Consequence SummaryShould this occur, the capacity of the receiving tank may be exceeded and fuel may overflow from the filler cap.
Corrective SummaryFord is extending the warranty for potential fuel cross-flow to 12 years of service or 150,000 miles from the vehicle's warranty start date, whichever occurs first. this cover will automatically transfer to subsequent owners at no charge. if a vehicle already has more than 150,000 miles, this overage will last until december 31, 2001. if the vehicle is experiencing a fuel cross-flow condition, dealers will repair the condition free of charge.
NotesFord has decided to conduct an extended coverage program to extend the warranty coverage for potential fuel cross flow problems. owners can contact ford at1-866-436-7332, concerning this program.

Defect SummaryVehicle description: light duty trucks and cab chassis equipped with gasoline engines and dual fuel tanks. the carbon steel fuel pressure regulator in the fuel system can wear out during the life of the vehicle. if the fuel pressure regulator malfunctions, it can cause high fuel system pressure, which damages the fuel pump check valve. this allows fuel to be transferred from one tank to the other, possibly overfilling the non-operating tank, resulting in fuel overflow past the filler cap.
Consequence SummaryFuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source could result in a vehicle fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will have a stainless steel fuel pressure regulator installed. owner notification began july 9, 2001. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-866-436-7332.  (1) filled fuel tanks with gas (2) fuel began pushing out of the rear filler cap after a few minutes of driving. notified by another driver and pulled over. opened the fuel door cover and saw gas spilling out around the cap. took the cap off and fuel blew out at me. myself and my daughter had gasoline all over us. (3) took it to the dealer and was informed it was a known defect and the recalled part had been replaced with redesigned fuel pump in 2001. new redesign is now doing the same thing. contacted ford customer service may 3, 2007, was told initially by 'sue' that ford would participate and repair the vehicle. then a supervisor, id# 1157 (shira) that it was already fixed 28 dec 01 and they won't fix it again although it's a known problem. *tr

Both front and rear fuel tanks recently started leaking on my 1993 ford f150 pickup after receiving a recall from ford for a problem with the fuel pressure regulator and mechanism for transfer of fuel from the tanks.at the time i took my pickup to 5 star ford for the recall they told me both fuel tanks were leaking at the seams of both tanks. i called ford customer service and they said the recall was for a defect that could cause transfer of fuel from one tank to another and cause leakage at the filler neck of the tanks. i believe the tanks are leaking at the seams either because of over pressure from the fuel pressure regulator causing excess pressure in the tanks or a defective joining of the tanks at their seams. i believe this to be a dangerous defect that could cause fire and property and body injury. i have requested ford to either repair the fuel tanks or replace them but they have refused. i think there is a serious risk of fire. i cannot afford the $700 5 star ford wanted to put two new fuel tanks on my pickup. please help!*ak

Smelled raw gas from the truck this past weekend. just purchased the tuck last month. i found that the seam on the gas tank is leaking gas. i transfed the fuel from the front tank to the rear, which is also heavy rusted. i contacted the dealer, the cost for a new tank is $175.00 for the front and a little less for the rear plus labor and anyother parts that may be needed. i am very lucky that there was no fire as the tank was near full, within five gallons of full!!!! i understand that the dealer does nor want to cover this cost or even partake in it as so many reports of leaking tanks have surfaced, in fact they had another call the same morning for another leaking tank. ford should be held to repair the tank problems before anyone is killed.*ak

Fuel from one of my two gas tanks flows into the other tank. i then note a distinct odor of gasoline, and if i remove the gas cap, gasoline will spill out of the tank. in addition, the rear tank has now developed a leak. i understand that certain 1993 f150 ford pickups were recalled in 1993 for high fuel pressure due to a faulty fuel pressure regulator which could damage the fuel pump check valve. this allows fuel to to transferred from one tank to the other, possibly overfilling the non-operating tank, resulting in fuel overflow past the filler cap (nhtsa #93v125000) and more will be recalled in may (nhtsa #00v424000, mfg #00s57). i have called ford, but they cannot tell me if by vehicle will be included in this new recall. it was not recalled in 1993, even though it has experienced the same problems as noted in the two recalls that i refer to.*ak

The repair on the truck was to replace both fuel pumps to prevent gas from pumping from one tank to the other and out the filler hose onto the outside of the vehicle. this was not happening when i purchased the truck. ford motor company should have made this repair under a safety recall 93s68. according initial information provided to me by the local ford dealership and the repair shop, it appeared that this repair (recall) was not previously made on this vehicle. at the time, i called ford customer service line about this repair and was told that the vehicle was no longer covered by this safety recall because of age. i did not know about the recall until on a trip gas started spilling from the fill necks on the tanks (due to the pumps not checking the flow back into the tanks allowing gas to be pumped from one tank to the other). when i started checking into the repair, i found the safety recall referenced above. my most recent conversation with ford customer service (supervisor heather apparently somewhere in canada and with no call back number) was that ford was not required to do anything further on this vehicle since their records indicate that the recall was closed in 1998 on this vehicle, and even though the problem exists they would not provide any compensation for this repair. (the repair has already been made and an approximate cost of $1000). it seems to me that the repair was necessary regardless of the age of the vehicle or previous ford efforts to correct this safety design defect and it should be corrected at ford motor companys expense not mine. i have been given the impression by local parts stores and repair shops that this is still a common repair needed on these vehicles.*ak

The problem consists of gas being pumped from the back tank to the front on a dual tank system. this item was a recall item, and when my truck was in for service for other work at cox ford in hampstead md they indicated that they performed the recall repair on the fuel system for this exact problem, though i was having no trouble with the fuel tank assembly at that time. about a year and a half later i noticed that after i exhausted the front tank and switched to the rear tank, once the rear tank was exhausted i noticed that the front tank would then have as much as 1/3 tank of fuel in it. i decided to live with the problem for the time being, but approached the dealer about this during april 1999 and the dealer informed me that since the recall repair had been previously done and the repair warranty had expired, any subsequent repairs would be my responsibility. needless to say i am not very happy with ford's handling of this problem. the problem comporomises my vehicle's safety and resale value, and i have to be careful not to accidentally pump my rear tank before the front is empty. *ak

The front gas tank on my dual tank 93 f150 started leaking. i found that there is a plastic cover on the front of the tank that collects dirt and debris. the collection of this dirt and debris between the plastic cover and tank caused the tank to rust in the location. a leak developed. gas leaking on the ground is not a good thing. my remedy so far has been to not use the front tank. the tank is still on the truck and now has the plastic cover removed. i removed it to find where the leak was coming from. this appears to be a common problem since the tanks are easily available on e-bay all the time. *jb

Gas was spraying out of gas insertion point on side of truck from front tank. the truck has been previously repaired under recall in approx. 1994. contacted local ford dealer, they were aware of prior instances where this has occured and the cause of this problem. both tanks were recently filled for this to occur. gas from one tank is being pumped into the other tank from the return gas supply by a leak in the check valves. this problem has brought about many safety issues one being a fire hazard. ford motor company is unwilling to do anything to remedy this situation. ford's only response is that the recall has expired. it is my assumption that ford's design of the dual tank system was inferior or that inferioir parts are being used. this is putting my family and other families in jeopardy.
