I was driving north (on cruise control approx. 55 mph) on i 75 near mile marker 78 when my 1993 ford f150 starting smoking under the hood. i pulled over and opened the hood and saw the engine in flames. i had a fire extinguisher in the cab so i used it to put out the fire. there was also a trail of fire under the truck that a good samaritan extinguised after he stopped to help. i called aaa to tow my truck to a local firestone service center for repairs. i bought this vehicle new in 1993 and never had any recall on it. i found out today from my insurance company that there is a defect w/ the cruise control switch on this model ford truck. *jb

Fuel was erupting from my rear fuel tank, i switched tanks which (temporarly) solved the problem. 1 week later my truck stalled and would not start. had it towed to vancouver ford in vanc. wa and $995.78 worth of repair/service charges; jeremy z. service advisor verbalized that there is no current campaign or recall notices re this fuel spillage problem and major fuel supply malfunction. though my trucks problems are accurately described in detail as stated for nhtsa campaigns 93v125000 and 00v424000 i strongly believe that my vehicle should qualify.*ak

Anytime truck is started, upon reaching 20mph the truck wont accelerate even if you floor it, and the engine acts like it wants to cut out and then suddenly the enging/transmission engages and rockets forward and if i'm not on top of this i could hit someone, especially when at stoplights while the truck is acting up. additionally, i can remove my key from the ignition without turning the ignition off, with the truck still running. is the ignition problem dangerous?? i definitely know that the engine hesitation and lurch forward is very dangerous, however, this problem is intermittent and will not reproduce itself consistently, and i therfore am having trouble with my mechanic determining what needs to be replaced (i refuse to take the vehicle to the dealership to spend a lot of money and not get this problem fixed) and am more confident in my own mechanic. if you have any details on how to fix this probelm, please call me at any time at the listed phone #.

Cruise control failed causing the vehicle to suddenly accelerate.
01/02/1999211/01/1998
While driving at 55 mph the cruise control engaged and opened the throttle wide open. the brakes were applied and eventually faded and failed. vehicle was stopped by putting the vehicle in neutral (engine raced) and shutting off the engine. husband restarted engine about 1/2 hour later, the engine did not race. husband limped the truck home and on the way was able to recreate the uncontrolled acceleration only once. confirmed it was the cruise control, since the pedal pulled away from husband's foot. note: the brakes did not shut down the cruise circut either by the primary shut off (brake light switch) or the secondary backup shut off (brake line pressure switch). highway patrol stopped to offer assistance which was declined after husband arrived. note for office personnel: my wife submitted this over the phone on 07jan199, but there were so many errors that i am resubmitting this. ref number on mailed form: 833146. *ak

Truck started speeding up by itself after about 15 mi of normal op. cruise control was not being used at the time. almost certain the cruise servo was pulling on the throttle causing the problem. speed increased to at least 80 and would have gone on up. cruise off switch on steering wheel did not shut the system down. brake switch did not shut the system down. redundant system: off switch in brake hydraulic line did not shut the system down. finally got stopped with ignition off, after burning out the front brakes. was able to repeat the problem once again while limping the truck home. have not found the problem as of jan 01, 1999.

Dt: the contact owns a 1993 ford explorer. the contact stated that on september 3, 2005 vehicle caught on fire. the fire was reported to the insurance company, and because the contact did not have full coverage nothing was covered by them. also, the fire was reported to ford . the fire occurred while the vehicle was parked for four hours. the contact's husband was home while this happened and he saw flames and called 911, the fire department/police department reported to the scene. the fire caused damage to the contact's house because the siding melted from the heat of the fire. the cruise control was identified as the cause of the fire. although the mechanic could not find a problem with the cruise control it would not automatically shut off by pressing the brakes. had to switch it to off. the cruise control had been a problem with the vehicle for a couple of months prior to the fire. *ak

I have a '93 ford f150 half ton 4 wheel drive pickup. about a year ago as i was approaching an intersection my brakes failed to work. i pumped them vigorously, and then only marginally they slowed me down. fortunately no one else was approaching the intersection. i made it to my mechanics shop and upon inspection he discovered the cruise control switch (my cruise control had stopped working a few weeks before) was shorting out, was charred black, and had been boiling the brake fluid in the brake line which was connected to it. this put air bubbles of vaporized brake fluid in the line which kept them from functioning properly. he disconnected the power supply to it and a few days later installed a new switch when it arrived. this happened almost a year ago and since then i have had no problems with it. at the time i just thought it was a fluke but now it scarces me to think it could happen to other people as well and i didn't warn anyone about it. *ak
