PE10036 | FORD MOTOR COMPANY | 09/07/2010 | 05/23/2011 | Fuel Tank Strap Corrosion/Rust
One or both of the steel straps holding up the fuel tank and attaching it to the truck frame can corrode and break.if one strap breaks, the tank may tilt and drop and possibly contact the road surface.if both straps break, the entire tank may drop to the road.if either failure occurs while the vehicle is being driven, contact with the road can abrade the tank and create a hole from which gasoline can spill.when the tank drops, it remains attached to the vehicle only by the fuel filler hose and/or supply lines, or in rare instances, by the skid plate, if present.this raises the possibility that the weight of the dropped tank could sufficiently strain the hoses and fittings to cause separation and fuel leaks between those components.the fire hazard created by the leaking gasoline is increased by the possible presence of sparks created by the metal tank being dragged along the road.the sparks could ignite the escaped fuel.odi has included in its incident counts reports it has received from consumers and reports provided by ford in which either the complaint involved confirmed strap corrosion or odi's investigation yielded information that strongly suggests the subject defect as the cause of the reported problem.among the incidents reported to nhtsa or ford, 243 involved the fuel tank dropping below the vehicle and/or dragging on the ground, 95 involved fuel leakage, and nine included reports of sparks from the tank being dragged on the road.odi has received one report of strap failure in which the leaking fuel ignited but self-extinguished.ford reported another incident in which the leaking fuel ignited and the resultant fire destroyed the vehicle.there have been no injuries associated with these incidents.odi has received reports of corrosion induced tank strap failures with other model year f-150 vehicles.odi is upgrading this investigation to further investigate the frequency, severity and scope of this problem.

The front strap on the truck gas tank failed and the front of the tank dropped and skidded on the road pavement until i was able to stop. a small hole was scrapped in the tank and gas was leaking. the tank was about 3/4 full and i could not move it to try to plug the leak. i decided to call 911 and two fire trucks, one state patrol, and the fire dept chaplin (who happened hear the call) all arrived. they were able to jack up the tank so the hole could be plugged and i was able to have the truck hauled away for strap replacement and tank repair. incidentally the tank itself was replaced about three years before that and the repair shop thought the straps looked ok and reused them, so i presume the strap deterioration may not always be obvious or apparent.

My 17 year old a honor student was going to volleyball practice when the front strap of the fuel tank let go resulting the front ot the fuel tank to drop down, grinding on the cement surface of the road wearing a hole in the front bottom corner of the fuel tank releasing the full 24 gallons of gas that was filled into the fuel tank the night before. the local law enforcement/fire dept/ford dealer were called to handle the situation. luckily for my daughter -no fire. the law enforcement took a picture of the fuel tank while it was stiill partially intact with gas flowing from the fuel tank, the fire dept. was able to contain some of the 24 gallons of gas and then clean up. the local ford dealership towed the 1997 f-150 to the dealership where the new fuel tank, straps and sensor were replaced. my insurance would not cover any loss on this issue. my total out of pocket expence for this -new tank, straps, labor, sensor, and towng charge-$523.27- gas replacement of 24 gallons-$68.40- total = $591.67- the ford dealer kept the old parts.

While i was driving my f-150 truck on highway s-22, west of borrego springs, california, the truck caught fire. i pulled over to the edge of the road and got out. a tow truck driver who was driving behind me put out flames in the cab with a fire extinguisher. then the cab bursed into flames and he pulled me away from the truck and called the police and fire department on his radio. though the truck was turned off the fire continued and enveloped the truck in flames, despite the water pumped onto it from the fire truck. i learned there was a recall for f-150 trucks for a defective fuel line that could (no doubt has) cause fires. ford motor company claimed that the recall did not include my truck because it was made in wayne and only f-150's built in norfolk and kansas city were involved. yet my truck burned to a shell. it seems obvious that the fire was sucking fuel from the tank even though i had shut off the engine, obvious that the leaking fuel had ignited under the hood and the fire got well-advanced before i was even aware of it and was too big to be put out by a hand-held extinguisher. ford has denied any responsibility for this disaster to me. they clame the case is closed. i reopened my case against ford in december, 2003 because i learned of computer websites dedicated to accidents caused by defects in manufacture of vehicles. *ak

On 5/3/02 engine check light came on and we took it to the dealership. they checked it and replaced the dpf sensor, updated computer and cleaned fuel injectors. the following week, i had trouble starting 3 times after work. the following wednesday, my wife drove it to work and when she tried to start it after work there was a loud bang and it took another 1/2 hr to get it going. when she got it going again there was a loud tapping from the engine. we called the dealer and towed it in. they checked and said the coolant was leaking into the oil and the engine could not be rebuilt. it was going to cost us $4000 plus labor to have another engine put in. this vehicle has been very well maintained. on doing some research we found that this is a common problem with this particular engine, and there was a recall (#99b29) related to this problem that we never received. we ordered the truck in jan 1996, and took delivery in march 96 which falls within all of the date ranges specified on f150.com. we have since contacted our salesman, he checked out the problem and called us back telling us to bring it in. this will involve another towing and i'm not sure it will solve anything we do not already know. we do not feel that we should have to pay $4000 for an engine on a truck that has been well maintained. where do we go from here?*ak

Dt: the contact 's vehicle had a brake line failure on the rear brake line. this happened on 10-04-05. he was driving on the interstate when he had to stop suddenly. he reported having no warning prior to this , such as a light coming on in the car. the brakes were not making any kind of noises. the brake pedal went to the floor. he pulled off of the road. he smelled brake fluid, and it was leaking from the steel brake line that is mounted on the rear axle housing. the brake line seemed unusually corroded. he takes very good care of the car and the car is stored properly. he has a lot of experience with vehicles, and has never seen anything like this. also, t the gas tank was suspended by two metal straps. the rear strap was severely corroded. the gas tank was laying on the skid plate. usually, there was about one inch clearance between the tank and skid plate. he was afraid that this may cause a gas leak from the gas tank .*ak
