Once the engine is started, the vehicle will not move from park to any other gear. there is an override procedure but it is inconvenient. when i took the vehicle to a dealer for repair, they told me ford had put a stop on supplying the cruise control brake switch. so it is not possible to get this repaired until ford replaces the part with one not defective. as a safety precaution, they removed the electrical connection to avoid fires at or around the brake fluid reservoir. however, brake fluid is leaking from the part and dripping. in the past month i have had to refill the brake fluid reservoir twice. i am concerned that the brakes will not function unless the part is replaced. the delimma seems to be ford will not allow the part to be replaced and yet they do not offer an alternative.

There was an electrical fire in the wiring harness connected to the master cylinder (brakes). no damage was done due to quick reaction but it left the brakes without power and the truck without brake lights. the problem is believed to be related to the switch fire problem that resulted in a wide-spread ford recall. the vehicle in question is a 1997 ford f-150 4x4. truck was purchased from lease-holder and full warranty was transferred to me. i have received several recall notices but not the one associated with this problem. *tr

While braking the pedal went to the floor on more than one occasion. the problem repeated itself on its own. driver lifted up the hood, and noticed that fluid was leaking from abs braking modular. this caused sparks from the master cylinder. driver will contact a mechanic for an appointment. *ak on second call. the original problem was intermittent cruise control operation about 1 year prior to this complaint. about 3 or 4 months ago the fuse on the circuit containing the scds blew. replaced fuses about 2 times. the first time the fuse lasted several weeks. the second one did not last long. then left fuse out. next time was under hood and replaced fuse saw spark at scds and fuse blew again. along with this problem the abs warning light was coming on on the dash and staying on. after disconnecting the scds the abs warning light went out. the crusie control still worked for a short period of time after disconnecting the scds electrical connector.

Break failure ford 1997 f150 vin. 1ftdf17w9vka47264. the vehicle had been parked for about 45 min. before starting out, i drove to a stop sign (about 200 ft) when the brakes were applied (10-15 mph) nothing happened, i used booth feet on the petal and applied all the force i could to slow down and it took about 75 ft to stop. i went ot a side street and parked with engine off, checked the break fluid it was full. took truck to nearest repair shop for check out. truck was parked for about 10 min. with engine off when mechanic started it and tested brakes they were working at that time (abs light was on). took truck to ford dealer in oscoda michigan ( zubek auto sales 511 state st, oscoda mi. 989-739-3261) after checking it out they found a bad abs sensor, they did not have any idea why i had no brakes. but they had another f150 in their shop that had a complete brake failure that they could not find the problem, they have had technicians from ford (detroit) look at the truck and they dont know what is wrong.

My front passenger side brakes lock up while driving my ford f-150. this has happened twice. the first time it happened the mechanic told me my brake lines were twisted. the second time which occurred 1-1/2 years later, the mechanic told me that it could possible be a valve or a cylinder problem which doesn't allow fluid to the brakes. this is very dangerous. my wheel gets extremely hot and so does my tire. the vehicle pulls extremely hard to the right and smokes emerges from the wheel. i am afraid that my tire could pop if this occurs again. i consider this to be a very serious problem and i will not drive my truck until i get some explanation from ford on this problem. the second time this happened was 5/25/2003. it occurred while driving down the freeway at 65 mph. very unsafe... can you help me? *nlm

The engine developed a severe knock when started one morning. the problem was a complete failure at the main crankshaft, severe wear at valve assembly, and corrosion throughout cooling chambers. ford did a recall on the head gasket the year before, changing head gasket, hoses, & coolant. the truck is uses by house wife driving the children to school. even though others have reported of same engine failure on 4.2l, ford denies any problem. 5 months later while the truck while the truck was sitting in the driveway, the engine wiring caught on fire, melting the plastic master cylinder, fueling the flames to melt all circuities and plastic. the abs lamp had lit earlier in the week, added brake fluid to reservoir, and the lamp went out. independent fire investigator says evidence points to a defect in the abs/master cylinder wiring in the engine compartment. *ts *jb ***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12-12-02 cut over to artemis***762417

I had purchased this truck on dec 19, 2002. the next day i drove it to tampa fl. while on the way there and while in tampa i had a few brake failures. when i was coming to a stop the pedal seemed to get soft, then they would get really hard and start pulsating and the vehicle would not stop. i would have to let off the brakes, and try again. i was lucky that it was early in the morning and most of the time i was not in a lot of traffic, i was able to stop the vehicle. on dec 29,02. i took the vehicle to the ford dealership where i purchased it, they looked at it and said they could not find anything wrong with the brakes. in january it must have happened to me about a 12 times, all with the same effects. in feb 03, i took it back in and they said they could not find anything wrong. a couple of days later the problem was back again now happening more frequently, now march and the problem has happen to me just about every week at least 4 to 5 times a week. on the morning of mar 28 03, i was taking my child to day care while coming to a stop at a light. i could not stop the truck, i let off the brakes about 2 more times, then i finally just applied the brakes as hard as i could and got it to stop a few inches from the car that was stopped in front of me at that point i contacted the dealership, they said bring it in. i dropped it off the same day. when i called them the following week on april 1 2003. they could not find anything wrong with it, but they were going to replace the brake booster and master cylinder and a check valve. they told me that with all the information that i had given them and from what other mechanics said it would have to be the three components they replaced. that night my truck was ready. i was very confident that the repairs would fix the problem but i was wrong on apr 06 03. while out and about and coming home i applied the brakes the truck then seem to slow down, then the brakes got hard again and started pulsating at the bottom. *jb

When brakes are applied in certain conditions other than wet, the abs sensor's inproperly engage sending the brakes into a frenzy. when this happens all braking ability is lossed unless you smash down on the pedal. this has happend to me on dry land going over a man hole cover on the highway. i had to stop short but couldn't. i didn't hit anyone, but it is something ford has not wanted to address. i know probably hundreds more who have the same problem on this truck. this is a major mechanical/electrical problem that should be address by ford immediatly. first it was the tires going on the exploreres, don't let it be the brakes failing on some families truck causing serious injuries or possibly death!*ak

This vehicle has had a chronic brake problem. the previous owner traded the vehicle in due to brakes that would not work properly and sunny king ford would not repair. sunny king ford salesman lied to me saying the problem was fixed. i purchased the truck based on his statement. i subsequently had to leave the truck with the on at least 3 different occasions before the brakes worked satisfactorily. now, while driving down us hwy 280 at about 60 mph the 4.2l 6 cylinder engine, with only 68,000 miles on it, threw the #6 rod, blowing up the engine. sunny king ford service department later tells me they have no idea why it happened, it just does sometimes. i regularly service my vehicles and the engine oil had been changed at a kwik oil change located at 3635 mary taylor road birmingham, alabama 35235 (205-655-4788) on 7-2-2002, 14 days prior to the engine blowing. this vehicle has been at the dealer for repairs more than i've had it, and i've only owned it for 6 months. when the engine blew sunny king told me it was out of warranty and i paid them an additional $3,375.99 so i wouldn't be making $360 per month payments on a junk vehicle i couldn't drive.why has my ford truck been such a piece of junk?*ak

Brake pedal is very inconsistant, and pedal will go almost to the floor, also the brake pedal never feels like a good pedal. the brakes give a very unsafe feel at all speeds, the dealer was informed of my problem, they looked at them and informed me that it was a known problem and that the brakes in the expeditions were the same way, however they said there was nothing they could. after speaking with ford's cutomer service they informed me that if i felt safety was a problem to take it back the the dealer. no success again, i then had a brake safety inspection completed at a local maintence facility and they could not find anything that appeared wrong however agreed that the brakes were insufficient for safe stopping. i then wrote ford customer service informing them of my complete dissatisfaction in the brakes and asked for any options that may be available to fix the problem and have not received a response as of 10 months later. i truely hope that your offices can be of assistance, i honestly feel that my safety and my family's safety is at risk each time i drive the vehicle. *ak

I had experienced a loss of brakes on three or four different occasions. i brought vehicle to manufactures service represenative. i explained i loss my brakes for a short momment and then they return. with the most recent occurance the abs light came on. this did not happen in previous incidences. they checked the abs system found no errors, they checked the brakes no problems. they couldn't find anything, i had to speek with the service tech directly giving more of a detail of what happens. they came back and found the master brake cylinder was leaking causing the intermittent (extremely random) failure. they charged me for the repair (no problem). i called ford motor direct and asked to be refunded my repair cost because i did'nt think a master brake cyclinder should be failing @ 38k. they were very professional and had no objections, they agreed totally (they paid me for the repair). a week later, this morning i almost crashed into a semi. the end of my road has a stop sign conecting to a major highway. when i proceeded to use my brakes to stop the vehicle did not stop! the brake problem was back. this incident was the worst of the brake failures, i literally almost got crushed by the semidid. i called the manufactures service rep. they told me they thought they had the fix with master cycliner, obviously it was not the fix. i asked what they thought it could be they had no clue! i have an appointment this monday with the shop to see if they can find the cause one more time. i stress, this problem is extremely dangerous. when one losses his brakes you loss total control. i hope this information can help save a life some where. thank you

This pickup truck does not brake properly. the brake pedal must be depressed very hard and even then, the braking time and distance is very poor. this problem is even worse and more dangerous when hauling a boat or other trailor. on numerous occasions i have almost hit someone and have ran through stop signs because of the poor braking. i don't believe that the anti-lock brakes work at all. i recently had my brake pads replaced and the dealer told me that he has seen similar problems, however, when the rotors are replaced the braking is much better. the specs. on the original rotors are different than the replacements. i believe that the original rotors are not the correct thickness and therefore the braking is very poor. i have to believe that ford f150s with these braking problems are getting into accidents, some resulting in injury and death. something needs to be done now. i don't trust that ford would volunteer this information and have a voluntary recall. please advise. *ak

Brake line freezing due to exhaust pipe being in front of wheels (alongside brakeline). i bought a 97 f-150 7 months ago. i recently noticed that it's increasingly difficult to get out of my driveway some days, the truck smells terrible (like something burnt) & my gas mileage is awful. i have been releasing the brake, the light is off, the pedal is up, but the brake apparently is still on. the tires & rims are icing up, the brake shoes on that side are crumbling. this causes poor braking conditions. i called the dealership, i had been told to watch for this problem, & had wanted it fixed. ( i would rather not find out how bad this is by something or someone. ) in fact, that is the reason that i was given when i was told that ford would fix it, until they saw the milage on the vehicle, then they told me, nope we wont fix it, youll have to pay us $700 (cdn) as a good will gesture from ford. (this seems a little steep!) & also they thought i should bring the truck in so they can make sure that theres no damage to the wheels or brakes. if the brakes can freeze on,... what stops them from freezing when they are not on?? i'm told there is a great deal of hydraulic pressure that stops this from being an issue, but the system is only as good as it is weakest part, & when using brute force to break them free, i would think something somewhere has got to give. if there were safety concerns that were the reason that ford was making the modifications whilst the vehicle was still under its original warranty, i should think these safety concerns do not go away once the truck is not on warranty. i would think that this would be a recall situation, not just a bulletin. they have admitted that it is a problem, & were even fixing it if it was under the original warranty, but i believe that this problem goes much further, & ford should be liable for the repairs, since it is a flaw in the design of the vehicle. i have contacted ford canada, & got no result. *ak

Dt: consumer parked truck wednesday night, when he got back into truck the next morning it would start once but not move out of gear. it would not come out of park. the engine was barely running and missing. there was a smell of smoke. turned engine off due to the odd smell. inspected under hood. there had been a fire that evidently burned out itself. cruise control quit earlier. the truck could not be driven due to this problem. afraid to move or attempt to repair anything for fear it may catch on fire again. consumer called ford, no recall on that particular model, but they were having a problem with those vehicles, but will not do anything until there was a recall. the most fire damage was seen on the master cylinder, suspected that the brake fluid may have had a hand in the fire along with the sensor. was missing brake fluid upon inspection.

*ak

While driving the pickup truck the brakes failed totally. inspection found that the brake line rotted at rear axle flex hose connection. this truck has never been backed into fresh or salt water (as in launching a boat). the truck has spent all it's years in new england and salt is used on the roads in winter. i do not believe a truck. just under 5 years old should have the brake lines rust out and cause a total loss of braking. either the brake lines are of the wrong material or wrongly positioned. i could have been killed if i had been at higher speed and in traffic. this truck has been employed in normal passenger transportation only. dt

I had experienced a loss of brakes on three or four different occasions. i brought vehicle to manufactures service represenative. i explained i loss my brakes for a short momment and then they return. with the most recent occurance the abs light came on. this did not happen in previous incidences. they checked the abs system found no errors, they checked the brakes no problems. they couldn't find anything, i had to speek with the service tech directly giving more of a detail of what happens. they came back and found the master brake cylinder was leaking causing the intermittent (extremely random) failure. they charged me for the repair (no problem). i called ford motor direct and asked to be refunded my repair cost because i did'nt think a master brake cyclinder should be failing @ 38k. they were very professional and had no objections, they agreed totally (they paid me for the repair). a week later, this morning i almost crashed into a semi. the end of my road has a stop sign conecting to a major highway. when i proceeded to use my brakes to stop the vehicle did not stop! the brake problem was back. this incident was the worst of the brake failures, i literally almost got crushed by the semidid. i called the manufactures service rep. they told me they thought they had the fix with master cycliner, obviously it was not the fix. i asked what they thought it could be they had no clue! i have an appointment this monday with the shop to see if they can find the cause one more time. i stress, this problem is extremely dangerous. when one losses his brakes you loss total control. i hope this information can help save a life some where. thank you

Dt: the contact 's vehicle had a brake line failure on the rear brake line. this happened on 10-04-05. he was driving on the interstate when he had to stop suddenly. he reported having no warning prior to this , such as a light coming on in the car. the brakes were not making any kind of noises. the brake pedal went to the floor. he pulled off of the road. he smelled brake fluid, and it was leaking from the steel brake line that is mounted on the rear axle housing. the brake line seemed unusually corroded. he takes very good care of the car and the car is stored properly. he has a lot of experience with vehicles, and has never seen anything like this. also, t the gas tank was suspended by two metal straps. the rear strap was severely corroded. the gas tank was laying on the skid plate. usually, there was about one inch clearance between the tank and skid plate. he was afraid that this may cause a gas leak from the gas tank .*ak

The other day i was at a fast food drive up and my truck wouldn't shift out of park. i contacted my dealer and they told me how to get it to shift.they said oh your brake lights probably have been coming and going with this problem.also. the shift lock mechanism is integrated in the brake switch, and ford has had some trouble with wire fatigue at the brake light switch. so as i was having trouble with the shiftlock i was unknowingly driving at times with no brake lights. this comment was made directly from my ford dealer. i asked if there were any tsb's or recalls for the cond., he said it was a commen problem for years but ford wouldn't do anything unless enough people ratted them to some authority that would make them correct this wide spread problem. he told me that on earlier modles without shiftlock wouldn't even know that they had even lost there brake lights. i looked at the connection on my trucks brake switch and sure enough the wire had been made so short from the factory that every time you would hit the brake it was pulling on it and one of the two wires on my truck had broken. i can't believe that i had a problem with my brake lights when for two days i thought i had a problem with my shift linkage. if i would have been hit then who would have been at fault? in my opinion ford, i mean when my local dealer in warsaw in can tell me over the phone then how many people have been killed in the u.s. from not having brake lights and were totally unaware ford endangered my life and i will never buy another ford product as long as i live! i sure hope they save a buck if my dealer knows that there is a problem, then so does ford. it's a safty issue so where is the recall? thank you. tony johnson. |
