Driving normally in heavy traffic, the tread on my tire just popped off and caused me to veer all over roadway and into ditch. there was extensive damage to my vehicle from tread hitting undercarriage and body. police had to assist. my tires were properly inflated and i was driving under the speed limit due to heavy traffic on interstate. the temperature was about 99 f degrees. my insurance refuses to pay for a new set of tires and i don't think i should have to pay the large deductible to get repairs made on vehicle. these are obviously defective tires and i'm terrified that they will explode again. the defective tire is still inflated just no tread is left on tire. i have kept tire for evidence and taken about 30 pictures of all the damage. i do not know who to turn to for help in this matter. *ak (tiresize: p235/70r16)

My tires have been wearing down for some time. i do not do very much highway driving, that might be why i didn't have a real problem with the tire. i only have 24000 miles on my truck. i was starting to think about getting new tires, they were worn down alot. two weeks ago or so i was driving down the street and felt a bumppy ride. when i got home i check the tires and found that on the front left tire i had a torn part of the tread. i could see the steel belt and the rubber had separated. i went and got a new set of tires the following day. then a week or more later i saw an article in the paper from your agency about the tires i had on my truck. i wish i would have had the article before the tire went bad, then i could have it documented, but i didn't. good thing i wasn't going down the highway at 70 miles per hour when this happened. it did happen and i hope that you can get out more information about this tire. thank you. *ak (tiresize: p235/70r16)

Truck was giving a bumpy ride at various speeds. went to my mechanic who examined the tires upon my complaint. he pointed out on both front tires where the tread was starting to separate from the sidewall. told me not to drive the vehicle on the highway at all due to impending danger. took vehicle to ford, they told me they could not replace the tires. called firestone, they would replace with the same tires that i was having trouble with. called ford co.in detroit, customer service told me that nothing could be done, firestone problem. i got the run around. replaced tires on my own and have saved the firestone tires should they be recalled for tread separation. *ak (dot number: w208 tiresize: p235/70r16)

I tdried to submit this but got a message that weg site was unavailable. but on retrying got a message already submitted, but obviously not so. the tires are not on recall. i inspected them all anyway. the left fron had wire belt edges sticking through the casing. i had about 20 pricks in my hand from feeling. i could put my had under the tread and pull it away from the casing. i replaced all 4. i called, firestone, firestone-bridgesone headquarters, ford, the ford dealer, two firestone dealers and have not received satisfaction. one dealer said [on the phone] that the fault was ford's because they didn't tell their customers to align the wheels often enough. the other dealer inspected the tire and said the failure was due to alignment. i asked how much would cause the problem and he replyed 1/4. i showed him the alignment data at 0.05 out and he said that the other front, although withing spec was at the high end. *ak( dot number: w2081pt197 tire size: p235/70r16 )

Tires in this failure are not on the recall list but are firestone. i was concerned so i inspected the tires. my visual inspection of all 4 tires indicated that the left front tire had wire belt edges sticking through the casing. [i put about 20 pricks in my hand feeling the inside edge] i could l put my hand under the tread and pull the it away from the tire. i replaced all four tires because of the similarity to tires on recall. after many calls to firestone, calls to firestone/bridgestone headquarters, visits to dealers, calls to ford, i have received no satisfaction or offers to reimburse me for the failure. one firestone dealer said it was because ford failed to instruct customers on proper alignment intervals. another said it was an alignment problem. when i asked how much could cause the problem he said .25 inches. i showed him the alignment i had done on replacement which was only out 0.05 inches. he then commented that the other front tire was within but at the high end of the tolerance.*ak( dot number: w2081pt197 tire size: p235/70r16 )

First two incidents involved tire blowouts at 50-70 mph. each blowout appears to start as a tear along the outter edge of the tread where it meets the belts and then tore to a point in the sidewall. essentially tearing a triangular chunk out fo the side of the tire. in reading all about current recall, it seems these tires are experiencing a similar problem. i do prescribed regular maintainence (3k) as directed by ford and almost all my miles are highway miles. now i have a third tire exhibiting tire peal when not 2k miles ago i had firestone representative tell me i had at least 10k miles left on all my tires. i find it incredibly hard to believe such a highly rated product as firestone produces should fail 3 times on the same vehicle in the same fashion. if you need to see the tire that's peeling i still have it. but independent tire dealers have all said treadwear would indicate longer tire life but the tire is definetly peeling of the belts.( dot number: tire size: p235-70r16 )

2 of 4 tires have developed considerable cracks around the tread line on the sidewall of the tire. i have taken the truck to 2 different firestone dealers and get varied inspection reports. at one of the service centers, a service mechanic tells me that he wouldn't drive the vehichle on the highway under any circumstances in the state that they (tires) are in while his manager tells me that the cracks are probably caused by armor all. the other service center manager i took the truck to tells me that he has placed a call in to firestone to see about this particular incident since the tires are not on the recall list but are questionable. he was to get back to me but has not to date. my initial complaint was intermittant shutter in the front end when braking hard from high speed. the problem didn't seem to be brake related but might be tire related given that it doesn't happen all of the time and that the cracking tires are on the front of the truck. they were purchased from a local firestone dealer as replacements for the oem wilderness ht tires sold on the truck when i purchased it new and have about 32,000 miles on them. firestone will not tell me that they are safe but will not replace them because they are on not on the list. one manager did tell me that firestone would probably end up replacing additional tire sizes in the future. i am no tire expert but given the cracks developing which are more than cosmetic it would appear that there are more issues with other sizes of this line of tire from firestone. any assistance or advise would be greatly appreciated. sincerely, steven d. terrell( dot number: tire size: p255-70r16 )

At about 18,000 miles one of the front tires that had been patched prior to my purchase split at the patch (about the center of the tread) so replaced both front tires at this time as reccommended by firestone dealer. this was a slow developing problem.. slow leak. within 10 days replaced one of these. sidewall split after barely brushing a curb. when i say barely brushing, those rubber nipples on new tires were not even rubbed off. about april of 2000 i suffered a high speed blowout (65 mph) in one of the rear tires. total mileage about 23000. still a lot of tread left on the rear tires and front ones like new... i chose to replace all 4 at that time due to fears for my safety. dealers claimed all problems were road hazards and not under any warranty. i am 48 years old and have been driving since age16. many of those years were on the road sales with as much as 55000 miles/yr. i have never... repeat never had to replace a tire before the tread wore out.( dot number: w208 tire size: p235 70r16 )

(one tire was a new replacement from the manufacturer, the 2nd was the original spare). the 1st incident occurred after 20 miles highway travel at 70mph, however the previous day the truck had completed 800 miles continuous highway driving. the 2nd incident occurred after 6 hours continous highway driving at 70mph. in both cases the incident began with severe felt-like wheel wobble, then immediate severe jolting and lurching of the truck across the highway lanes out of control. fortunately no accident occured and i stopped safely. in the 2nd incident the shredding of the tire also ripped out the exhaust barckets, bent the exhaust pipe downwards (required re-bending to obtain decent road clearance). i reported the incident to ford customer service. i replaced both rear tires with new firestone wilderness tires at ford. i am now deeply worried that this will occur again, and to add insult to injury i hear there are now reports of firestone wilderness tires shedding. is there a connection between general tires and firestone, both supplied by ford? is there a conection with the exhaust exhiting directly in front of the tire causing severe over heating of the tire? i shal be replacing the exhaust with a rear exit exhaust at mullinax..*ak( dot number: a308443276 tire size: p235/70r16 )

Firestone tire tread separation. model wilderness, size 23570r16, dot-w2081pt176, tire mileage 8,308 on 11-07-03. circumstances: while entering the town of clinton, la. at 45mph, heard loud sharp thud and my 1997 ford, f150, immediately veered accross the divided center lane toward an on coming logging truck. i immediately corrected to my right and stopped in the front yard of house #12780. upon exiting vehicle determined the subject left rear tire tred had seperated (althought still attached to tire) damaged the fender and scratched the body of the vehicle extending to the gas cap. these tires were purchased in august 03. during a conversation with a firestone rep. my tire dealer was advised that this particular tire was manufactured during the 17th week of 1996 and i should replace my tires (taylor's auto repair, franklinton, la.) the tire was sent to firestone with two extimates of damage. firestone's responce was there was no material defect and the seperation was a result of low tire pressure therefor they have no interest in my claim, or responsibility. the subjectnew tire was made before my vehicle came off the assembley line. the tire is currently still at firestone awaiting any direction from for return (21 days from their letter of 11-20-03) i have also taken photos of the subject tire & damage. is this agency interested in viewing the tire? if so, please advise mailing asap. thankyou, rij. *ak

On june 7th, one of the goodyear wrangler rt/s tires on my truck failed at highway speeds on i-77. this is the second tire that has failed while driving on the highway. the first september 2002. it appears that one of the belts separated from the inside of the tire. goodyear replaced the first tire at no charge, but i am going to have them removed and replaced with another brand. there were no punctures or evidence of pressure loss noted on either tire. goodyear claims the damage was resultant of tire pressure loss. this tire was the replacement tire for the one that failed last year. the mileage on the first one was about 7000 miles and this one was about 5500. *jb

I have had three tread separations since buying this truck new. the first on 02/98, the second 05/06/00 which caused $750 body damage and the third on 08/10/00 which occured during the repairs in the meantime from the second one. continental tire paid for the second tires damage but balked at the third. i am suing them in small claims court for $2200 for the repair of the truck. we go to arbitration june 14th, 2001 in benson az. these tires are a piece of junk. i would had a rollover if i had been driving any faster than i did (55 mph) and had not been alert to the situation. temperature had nothing to do with it as the 2nd on occured late at night and the 3rd was in the morning. i cannot express my grief invoved in this, ameritech tires should never ever be sold on any vehicle and dealing with this company is fruitless as they intentially destroyed the tire and evidence even though i have proof that i called to claim the tire back four times. they claim the tire had a repair in it which caused the flat. the tire never lost air and it was the tread that fell off, not a flat tire. but they destroyed the evidence. we are not dealing with a decent manufacturer. we are dealing with a company that makes tires that are unsafe at any speed. and they know it. *ak (dot number: p235-70-16 tiresize: p235-70-16)

I purchased a new f-150 xl in august 1997 with factory firestone wilderness ht tires. the original set lasted 1 year until i had a blow out on the rear, driver-side tire. there was a complete tire separation down to the rim within seconds (10). i brought the tire to discount tire in lake charles,la to have it replaced with the matching tire. the new tire was placed in the same location and because the three other tires still only had ~15,000 miles, no rotation was performed. aprroximately 1 month later, with only 3000 miles of tread wear, i had a remarkably similar blow-out and tread separation at 65 mph, just driving down the interstate in a careful, straight direction. i returned to discount tire and explained that i had just recently purchased the tires and that i believed the tires must be defective because this was my second complete tire separation on the same location of my vehicle under non-extreme driving conditions. i inquired as to whether it could be a defect in the tire or the vehicle. he reassured me that this was an impossibility. my second blow-out within 1 month was only a coincidence. i had to pay the nominal tread-wear fee and the mounting fee. less than about 6000 miles later, i had a blowout at the exact same tire well (right rear). the manager once again convinced me that i must be running over debris on the interstate, even though i was always in the slow lane and not veering with my right tire onto either shoulder. the manager once again convinced me that the likelihood of three defective tires was next to impossible (although, this time, he replace and mounted my tire for free). to shorten my story, after many futile attempts and about ten hours of waiting at this incompetent store, over three visits, they replaced my tire for free with a wilderness at on the right rear tire location and i left it at that. the wilderness at never blew out from 30,000 to 45,000 miles while i still owned my truck. *ak
