Defect SummaryVehicle description: light duty 4-wheel drive pickup trucks. if the vehicle is overloaded, the rear leaf springs can be overstressed. a fatigue fracture of the spring can occur. the center leaf of the spring can fracture at the forward edge of the spring seat and, in some cases, contact the fuel tank.
Consequence SummaryFuel tank contact can damage the tank and result in fuel leakage. fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the rear springs and install an additional clip on the forward end of the rear springs to prevent fuel tank contact in the event of a leaf fracture. any fractured springs will be replaced.
NotesOwner notification is expected to begin august 10, 1998.owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

PE10036FORD MOTOR COMPANY09/07/201005/23/2011Fuel Tank Strap Corrosion/Rust
One or both of the steel straps holding up the fuel tank and attaching it to the truck frame can corrode and break.if one strap breaks, the tank may tilt and drop and possibly contact the road surface.if both straps break, the entire tank may drop to the road.if either failure occurs while the vehicle is being driven, contact with the road can abrade the tank and create a hole from which gasoline can spill.when the tank drops, it remains attached to the vehicle only by the fuel filler hose and/or supply lines, or in rare instances, by the skid plate, if present.this raises the possibility that the weight of the dropped tank could sufficiently strain the hoses and fittings to cause separation and fuel leaks between those components.the fire hazard created by the leaking gasoline is increased by the possible presence of sparks created by the metal tank being dragged along the road.the sparks could ignite the escaped fuel.odi has included in its incident counts reports it has received from consumers and reports provided by ford in which either the complaint involved confirmed strap corrosion or odi's investigation yielded information that strongly suggests the subject defect as the cause of the reported problem.among the incidents reported to nhtsa or ford, 243 involved the fuel tank dropping below the vehicle and/or dragging on the ground, 95 involved fuel leakage, and nine included reports of sparks from the tank being dragged on the road.odi has received one report of strap failure in which the leaking fuel ignited but self-extinguished.ford reported another incident in which the leaking fuel ignited and the resultant fire destroyed the vehicle.there have been no injuries associated with these incidents.odi has received reports of corrosion induced tank strap failures with other model year f-150 vehicles.odi is upgrading this investigation to further investigate the frequency, severity and scope of this problem.

Driving 1998 ford f-150 4 x 4 truck on dry, flat, smooth asphalt surface road at 45 mph when i noticed a loud metallic sound. pulled off road immediately and noticed strong odor of gasoline. looked under vehicle and observed front end of gas tank was on the ground, leaking gas profusely. turned off engine and immediately called 9-1-1 because of fire potential. fire, ems, and local sheriff responded. front gas tank mounting strap failed, causing tank to land on pavement, rupturing fuel tank with resultant gasoline spill, contained by fire department. gas tank removed by fire department, truck towed for repairs, approximated at $1,500.00 to replace damaged fuel tank, fuel pump, and mounting straps. fire department reported to me that several occurrences with ford f-150 fuel tank mounting strap failures have been reported.

Tl-the contact owns a 1998 ford f150. while driving approximately 25 mph, the contact heard a loud clunking noise outside of the vehicle and maneuvered to the side of the road. he noticed the fuel tank had partially detached with both fuel tank straps completely corroded as a result to rust. in addition, there was an estimated amount of ten gallons of fuel leakage on the ground. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnosis who stated there was an open investigation associated with nhtsa action number ea11006 (fuel system, gasoline: storage: tank assembly: mounting). the vehicle was not repaired. the contact was in the process of notifying the manufacturer regarding the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 130,000. the vin was unavailable. js

This is regarding a 1998 ford f150. i was driving on a normal asphalt road, about 30mpg, just through an intersection. the front of the gas tank dropped suddenly. by the time i could safely pull over the road abraded a hole clean through the front bottom edge of the tank. it was raining heavily, otherwise i believe there wouid have been a fire. this left a trail of gas about 1/4 mile long on a busy road, and a large gasoline puddle that grew for 15 minutes after we stopped. we got away from the truck as fast as possible. we lost the full tank of gas and had to be towed to the dealership. the gas tank was replaced by the dealership at a cost of over $700. i do not have the original gas tank. the problem is that the front strap broke and dropped the tank without any warning signs. i just heard about the investigation, i'm only guessing about the date of the incident.

On monday august 11, 2003 i noticed a strong odor of gasoline on my 1998 ford f-150 pickup. i found that gasoline was running along the driver side frame and leaking rather heavily onto the payment. i immediately drove to a nearby automotive service center for examination. i was subsequently advised that the fuel line had a crack and was the cause for the leaking fuel. according to the service technican the crack appeared to be unknown including any damage. i had extended warranty insurance with geico for the $277.87 replacement line. since i had a $250.00 deductible, the cost was mostly borne by me. the owner of the service center, said he never had a cracked fuel line in all his years of automotive service. i also in my 50 years of owning vehicles have never experienced such a incident. my biggest concern was the extraordinary danger this type of leak could cause a motorist, with gasoline leaking on to the payment. obviously a discarded cigaret or other ignition could have caused a serious fire and perhaps injury or death.i would like to know if this is something you are interested? i plan to write ford, but in the interest of public safety, i thought you might like to know about my experience. sincerely, john waters. *ak

On my way to work, the fuel tank straps of our 1998 ford f150 rusted through and the tank fell. luckily it did not happen on the interstate, but while waiting for the stoplight on the off ramp. i pulled into the parking lot with the tank hanging and parked it. to get it home, we used tow straps to put the tank back in place and drove slowly with hazard lights home. we are currently deciding whether to fix it ourselves or park it.

Our 1988 ford f-150's gas tank fell off the truck in our driveway. the local fire department was called and they advised us that the rear strap completely deteriorated. they were able to cut the front strap with minimal effort as it was deteriorated as well. we were very fortunate it did not fall when in the truck was in motion.

I own a 1998 ford f-150 with 4.2l engine for the past 3 winters i have had problems that when i take my foot of the accelerator, the engine continues to run at high rpm. this makes it very difficult to break. i recently found on the web nhtsa recall # 98v007. which seemed to describe my problem exactly. when i called my local ford delarer, they stated that my vehicle was not covered by the recall
