Defect SummaryVehicle description: light duty pickup trucks and multi-purpose passenger vehicles. if the automatic transmission shift cable assembly was not fully attached to the steering column bracket, the shift cable assembly can come out of the bracket. the vehicle operator would then not be able to shift the transmission from one of the drive gear positions into the park position even though the gear shift selector would indicate park.
Consequence SummaryThe condition would not allow a disengagement of the transmission from the park position or affect proper neutral start switch operation. unintended vehicle movement could occur if the parking brake was not set.
Corrective SummaryDealers will make the proper attachment of the transmission shift control cable to the steering column bracket and add a tie strap to that connection.
NotesOwner notification is expected to begin october 20, 1997.owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

The 1998 ford f150 pick up truck 4.2 liter v6 engine threw a rod during startup one morning. the engine had 70,000 easy miles on it. no towing, racing or hard driving. i had the engine replaced at a cost of $4200.00 with a jasper engine at mr. engine because ford would not help at all unless i paid them $7500.00 for a new ford engine. i had already replaced two automatic transmissions in this same vehicle. the first time it cost me $2200.00 at 50,000 miles to rebuild the original, and the second time $1800.00 to replace the original with a remanufactured jennings transmission at 160,000. from all i have heard ford knew about the engine gasket defect and still has done nothing about it. i have all documentation ,and believe this needed to be remedied by ford. we are talking about thousands of 4.2 liter 1997 through 1999 engine failures. i love my truck, but will never buy another ford product. *ak

The transmission in my 98 f-150 failed at 36400 mi and 36 months. ford, the dealer and i split the cost of repair. now, approximately 36000 mi and three years more and the transmission has failed again. dealer recommends that i purchase a re-manufactured trans for $2200. odd coincidence that the same transmission failed at the same mileage and time. vehicle is used for transportation and is rarely used to tow or carry loads. both incidents happened with the vehicle in drive and moving forward at a very moderate rate in a parking lot. *jb

I have a 1998 f150 i bought new. i have been a ford person for many years but will not buy another ford until the problems with the motor and transmissions are corrected. at 72,000 miles i had to replace the transmission. ($2,200), at 92,000 miles check engine light came on, idling was rough but drove fine. took it to the mechanic he said tune-up would correct it. $400 later, still check engine light and idle rough. it just stopped and wouldn't start back up. i'm having to replace the block ect.. having to continue to pay a nice vehicle payment each month and insurance and still not having a vehicle to drive is ridiculous. very disappointed with ford!! kl. *la

I started up my truck in my driveway and as i put the truck in drive ii noticed a slight slippage in my transmission, i didn't think too much of it because at the time the temperature outside was about 10 degrees and i assumed it was because of the extreme cold. as i traveled approx. 1/2 mile i noticed as i was accelarating that the truck seemed to not want to go, i was able to nurse it another 1/2 mile to my mothers house where i discovered that the hose popped off near the radiator and poored out transmission fluid. i put the hose back on and tightened it back up and was able to put 6 qts of transmission fluid back in. this seemed to correct the problem and i thought that all was okay, but, i was wrong! on jan.8th ,2001 i noticed that as my wife and i were out that it was beginning to catch hard when i was starting out from a dead stop. well by the time i got home which was 10 to 15 minutes later i stopped by my mailbox and i was trying to edge up closer and it would not go forward, but i noticed that i could go backwards with no problem. well i had to have it towed to a transmission shop and he told me that i probably burned out the bands in the transmission and it could cost me anywhere between 800 to 1700 dollars for repair depending on how many were burned out. thats where i,m at now and is there anything i can do to get ford to help me, ha,ha!*ak

I purchased a 1998 ford f-150 in 2000 from carmax in arlington, tx. i have had no major problems until nov. 7th 2008. i was driving and approached a traffic signal. i attempted to depress my brakes when the vehicle locked up and spun sideways at the intersection. when i exited the vehicle i found that my driverside rear differential had broken lose and the rear differential clamp had broken off allowing the entire driverside differential to fly off of the vehicle. % minutes earlier i was on the freeway. if this would of happened on the freeway, i would not be here today. *tr

The differential has disintegrated inside. this was caused by a bearing which came apart and caused everything inside to shift about an inch towards the drivers side. how dangerous is that? ultimately, the housing, ring gears and other gears inside were damaged beyond repair. it started with a slight hum at 45 mph and within two weeks completely broke so that the driveline turns within the housing while the wheels stay put. i use my truck only for street transportation and have taken impeccable care of it. the truck has 102,000 miles on it. only two months ago, i had the fluid changed everywhere including the rear end. i have put a rebuilt rear end resulting in $2600 out of my pocket. thanks mr. ford for that!*ak

Ninety percent of the time i have to force gearshift into 2nd gear. now, after 11 months going into third gear occasionally grinds. this is not only very aggravating, but dangerous as well. cars with automatics have to slow down suddenly because i'm trying to get into second gear without clashing the gears anymore than necessary. i took it to the dealer and of course they said all was well. i even went through the hassle of going to another dealer, driving 2 more identical trucks, and they did the exact same thing except for the 3rd gear problem. the clutch seems to be ok, so really the only thing left are the synchronizers. problem doesn't seem to be changed by temperature or any other outside influences.

POWER TRAIN - MANUAL TRANSMISSION - SHIFT PATTERN INDICATOR

Gear shift indicator snapped in nashville, tn on crosscountry trip from arizona to maryland, stranding us 36 hours in nashville. gear shift indicator would not go into park. cable fixed, but it must have taken out our alarm system and steering wheel locking mechanism. steering wheel will not lock unless you yank it 900 to the right or left. koons ford in annapolis, md, told us this was normal on the locking problem, and that four other vehicles on their lot do the same thing.
POWER TRAIN - TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)

Dt: the contact stated while putting vehicle in four wheel drive it accelerated unexpectedly. the accelerator pedal went all the way to the floor on its own. the vehicle would not shut off. the contact had both feet on the brakes, shifted into low, and attempted to shut off the engine. the vehicle went over a pedestrian, a ramp, and knocked the trailer through the tailgate. there was damage to the ramp and the vehicle. the pedestrian received only minor injuries, mostly bruises to her side. because the incident occurred on private property no police report was taken.*ak
Due to location of the 4wd selector switch, while park driver accidentally turned the 4wd switch from 2h to 4h thinking that the a/c fan speed was being adjusted.
