Various switches are failing, passenger side window switch, electric mirror adjust switch, fan switch for heater/ac and the most annoying is the multifunction switch which causes the wipers to come one when ever they feel like it. i also personally know of two other ford f150 owners suffering from similar problems. i think its time that ford stops using inferior parts before we all start buying dodge. *nm

Dt: the contact owns a 1999 ford f-150. the contact complained about electrical problems since the cruise control stopped working in august 2004. within a month of the cruise control malfunctioning the abs sensor illuminated on the dashboard, and the heater stopped working. approximately one month ago the power door locks stopped working. when it was hot outside, the contact turned off the lights in the vehicle he had to remove the fuse. the contact stated there was a ticking noise coming from inside the fuse box. the consumer contacted the dealership, and they told him to bring the vehicle in for a diagnostic test at his expense. the manufacturer explained to the dealership that the consumer felt that the electrical problems listed above were caused by the cruise control switch. *ak the consumer has since stated the power mirrors no longer work. *jb

Dt: 1999 ford f150. there was an under the hood fire. this occurred on august 2, 2005. the vehicle had been parked for approximately five minutes when the fire started. there was no indication that there was something wrong with the vehicle. the fire department came and there was a report. there is not yet a determination as to why the fire started. the fire was so hot, the hood was gone. the vehicle was sitting 20 feet away from a mobile home and it melted the siding. *ak *jb

On multiple occasions all external and internal lights would cut off for a fraction of a second and then light back up. each time they went out once and so fast that it was barely noticed. the number of these incidents are unknown. i would say fewer than 10. the first dealership it was reported to was crescent ford in high point, nc. at the time, they did not record the issue as being reported and did not advise me that it should be checked. the problem was happening so infrequently that i did not realize it might be a serious problem. in the later part of 2003, october i believe, i stopped at a local tire distributor to have my tires balanced and rotated. i noticed from inside the store that the headlights were not off. i returned to the vehicle to attempt to turn them off by manipulating the light switch and ignition switch with no success. i had the work done at the tire store and took the truck staight to bob dunn ford in greensboro where they advised me that the fuse box had to be rewired and that it was not safe to drive. the service technician showed me a fuse that had been removed from the fuse box. the fuse was black, melted and the element in the fuse was not burned through. the cover to the fuse box had a white spot on it where the plastic was heated and charred. the dealership provided me with a vehicle to drive and my truck was repaired but at my expense. i had applied to be reimbursed by ford but have never heard any response dispite multiple calls to the dealership. after having learned of the recall for fires in parked f150's i decided this should be reported. dates provided are estimates. i would have to have the dealership records pulled to find exact dates and mileage. the mileage on the vehicle was approximately 28,000 miles but it was out of warranty as it was older than 3 years.

Dt: problem occurred about two years ago initially. water goes from windshield to gem module when it rains. this causes windshield wipers to only go at a certain speed unless the vehicle is stopped or put in neutral. radio also dies when the windshield wiper problem occurs and owner believes all this is caused by the gem module getting wet. the gem module was replaced one time but the problem returned shortly afterwards. when it rains a crackling sound like bacon is heard and a burning smell is noticed. this was reported to ford and they reported no knowledge of problem and showed no interest. *jb

1999 ford f-150 blown spark plug. i replaced the spark plugs on my f-150 approximately three months ago. i replaced the original plugs with autolite double platinum plugs. yesterday (june 13, 2004) while accelerating from a stop light, i heard a loud bang from under the hood. luckily i was only about a mile away from home. once there, i raised the hood and found that the number two spark plug had been blown out of the cylinder head. it destroyed the coil pack as well. it appears that when the plug blew, it shot up into the coil pack thereby destroying the coil. since the ignition wire is part of the coil pack, it further appears that the compression of the rubber insulator acted like a spring and pushed the plug back into the oriface with enough force to break the white insulator at the bottom of the plug and and slam the tip into the electrode. i was able to remove the plug without incident. i did not find any remnants of aluminum in the spark plug threads. since the plugs were changed only a few months ago, i still had the old plugs. the damaged plug was replaced with one of the old plugs. the threads felt as though they were still intact, and i was able to get the replacement plug back in without any modifications. it was tightened down, just snug, not tight. the coil pack on that cylinder had to be replaced. the cost from autozone was approximately $45.00. i will continue to watch and listen for any tell-tale signs of the plugs backing out as described on the f-150 web page. i do recall a ticking noise about 2-3 days prior to the incident.*ak

Water was getting down into the dashboard and causing windshield wipers to stop. the windshield wipers work normal when the vehicle is in neutral or park. *ak the wipers would only work on low, the radio would cut off when driving in the rain which would happen after 10 minutes, the vehicle wouldn't turn over. the diagnosis was that harness assembly needed to be repaired at the starter assembly. there was a clicking sound coming from under the dash, and the theft light flashed. the mechanic found a bad gem module which also caused the blower to stay on and drain the battery. the heater bower wound not shut off intermittently when shutting the trunk off and had to be manually shut off. *sc

3 spark plugs on my 99 f150 have backed themselves out, causing immediate engine decompression. the only way to adequately repair is to completely remove the head, a multi-day, multi-dollar task. viewing auto message boards suggest i am not alone in this experience. apparently there is some defect in the triton v8 engine design, although my research shows ford has not addressed this issue. *ak

I bought the 99 f-150 used. i've owned it for 2 years and in those two years spent over 3000 dollars repairing it. i cant handle the thought of keeping a truck that cost so much in repairs. and now the dealer tells me i need a new transmission. this is one week after i spent over 500 replacing the spark plugs, fuel filter, and getting the fuel injectors cleaned. i have only 58,000 miles on the thing and was told by the dealer that the plugs don't need to be touched for 100,000 miles. well it was missing and that was the problem. the truck slams into gear between 1 and 2, and now the problem is my transmission is bad. at 58,000 miles? and i've never even towed anything. just regular wear and tear? i think these trucks must be lemons. after i get the transmission fixed, i'll have spent $5,600 in a two year span. i have to sell it because the repairs are more than the payment. i guess that's why it was sold to me when it was only two years. old. *nlm

My family and i were traveling on the interstate when our gauges on our truck began to go from zero to one hundred miles per hour back and forth. our gas gauge would from full to empty. all gauges on the dash would go crazy. our battery light had come on a few miles before this occurred. we lost all power and our truck decelerated quickly on the interstate. we found a parts store and put on a new alternator and battery thinking that would do the job. as we continued our trip, the gauges began to do the same thing within ten miles of changing alternator and battery. i would like to know if there is a flaw in 1999 ford f150's. we checked all fuses and have no idea why this occurred. the truck cannot be driven because it will shut off while driving. *tt

Vehicle is a 1999 ford f-150 and it has approx. 54,000 miles on it. the evening of march 3 the truck began to run weird and it began to not run correctly.the morning after i brought it to a reair garage and the computer showed that there was a detination in the motor. the ignition coil was bad the mechanic informed me that he needed to replace all eight coils. this cost me 905 dollars. i don't believe that this problem should have occured because it has lower mles. i would like to know if this is an occuring problem with the 5.4 triton v8. i'm not happy with the money that i had to put into my truck, i bought a newer vehicle to waive some cost of vehicle repairs but this was a rediculous amount for a repair.

My neighbor and i lived in a duplex with adjoining garages in which she would park her ford f-150 pickup. at approx. 11 pm on 1/4/05, my son woke me up to say he smelled smoke. when we went outside we saw my neigbors truck engulfed in flames and the garage itself was starting to burn. by the time the firefighters arrived and put out the fire, both our garages were destroyed along with part of her duplex. the rest of the dwelling had extensive smoke, heat and water damage. the fire investigators did not come up with a definite cause of the fire, but two of the three felt it started with the truck. do i have any recourse in this matter as i lost a substantial amount of property? i would appreciate any information you could give. thank you.

Dt: bought a used truck, and after the warranty expired had to replace the starter/the ball joints/he upper tie rods, and the control arm on both sides. engine manifold split, and exhaust system rusted. later, while driving tie rods came off. there was a slight drop at the entrance to the parking lot, and as vehicle went back up the drop, it slid and there was an impact. got out of the car, and saw that the tie rod came off and gouged into the pavement. spoke to the manager of country club chevrolet, and he simply gave consumer a discount on parts and labor. yesterday he went to a certified used vehicle dealer and asked for the 88-point inspection,, and they were unable to provide that information. *ak

Dt: ford f150 1999. before the fire, there was a problem with fuses starting on 6/9/05. there was no turn signal. the turn signals returned after replacing the fuse/brake lights, hazards, owner thought it was fuse #23 or 20. the vehicle caught on fire while sitting in the driveway. the fire occurred in the wires going into the master cylinder under hood. there was a smell coming from under the hood the same day of fire at about 12:30 and then fire happened at 6 pm. when outside owner smelled a strong odor like smoke. then smoke came from under hood. the owner opened the hood and there were flames about 6 inches high coming out. the fire was put out by hose and then owner tried to start vehicle. started it and didn't smoke, but there was a blown fuse that governed the hazard lights, etc. owner believed it was an electrical fire. the fire department was not called nor police. there were no pictures were taken. vehicle is now at the local mechanic. also, owner has contacted local dealership. the owner will attempt today to contact ford. vehicle is not a total loss, only some of the wires were burnt and some melted in cruise control switch. owner is aware that there is an investigation. *ak *sc *jb
