PE10036FORD MOTOR COMPANY09/07/201005/23/2011Fuel Tank Strap Corrosion/Rust
One or both of the steel straps holding up the fuel tank and attaching it to the truck frame can corrode and break.if one strap breaks, the tank may tilt and drop and possibly contact the road surface.if both straps break, the entire tank may drop to the road.if either failure occurs while the vehicle is being driven, contact with the road can abrade the tank and create a hole from which gasoline can spill.when the tank drops, it remains attached to the vehicle only by the fuel filler hose and/or supply lines, or in rare instances, by the skid plate, if present.this raises the possibility that the weight of the dropped tank could sufficiently strain the hoses and fittings to cause separation and fuel leaks between those components.the fire hazard created by the leaking gasoline is increased by the possible presence of sparks created by the metal tank being dragged along the road.the sparks could ignite the escaped fuel.odi has included in its incident counts reports it has received from consumers and reports provided by ford in which either the complaint involved confirmed strap corrosion or odi's investigation yielded information that strongly suggests the subject defect as the cause of the reported problem.among the incidents reported to nhtsa or ford, 243 involved the fuel tank dropping below the vehicle and/or dragging on the ground, 95 involved fuel leakage, and nine included reports of sparks from the tank being dragged on the road.odi has received one report of strap failure in which the leaking fuel ignited but self-extinguished.ford reported another incident in which the leaking fuel ignited and the resultant fire destroyed the vehicle.there have been no injuries associated with these incidents.odi has received reports of corrosion induced tank strap failures with other model year f-150 vehicles.odi is upgrading this investigation to further investigate the frequency, severity and scope of this problem.

My 2000 f-150 ford pickup. i went out in my driveway and noticed something hanging down from under the truck. it turned out to be the rear strap that holds the gas tank on the truck. it has rusted and came apart. the gas tank had dropped down about 3 inches and has all the hoses pulled tight. ford says there are no recall on my truck. *jb

I was driving down a city street and hear a loud metal scraping sound coming from under my truck. i immediately pulled over and stopped. when i looked under my truck my gas tank was dragging on the ground. the front metal bracket had rusted through and broken. there was gas leaking from the tank and the fire department responded. there was no fire. to say the least this is outrageous and totally unacceptable for any car or tuck. i have seen many other reports about this problem with this truck. why hasn't there been a recall? i was lucky there wasn't a fire. someone will eventually be killed by this default.

Rear fuel tank strap rusted through on 2000 ford f-150
01/24/2011143609
Approximately (5:45pm) just after dark on mon.,1- 24-11. i was coming home had fueled up my truck (then at 3/4s full) for the week when i noticed a scraping/dragging sound coming from the rear of the truck just after crossing a double rr-track on a paved two lane road. nowhere to pull over after a wet snowfall on the narrow shoulder, i put on the 4ways and crept to the nearest driveway at a drugstore. i exited the truck to check out the noise, to my shock i saw my forward end of the fuel tank was on the ground and spilling fuel. i called 911, police and fire (equipped to stabilize the fuel spill) and a tow companywere sent to assist. a report was made by the local police. the truck was then taken by my request to the ford dealership where it had been purchased new. next day: the dealership quoted an astronomical price for replacement of damaged parts & labor (1600-2000). after research had the truck towed to another facility for the repairs which were completed the same week by that thu. evening. i do have the defective parts in my posession (fuel tank straps). this was out of pocket (except for the original tow; insurance reimbursed 50.) had to barrow and refuel a vehicle as well to get to work. due to some ford motor co. connections through my business clients i have received a phonecall from their corperate offices for which i had a 30min. conversation with a rep. who needed a week to research my verbal complaint. this person did try to call me back on thu.2-10-11 but i was not available (due to my work hours). in the first phone call i spoke of my knowledge of ford receiving a letter from (odi) back in 9-24-10. if they knew why wasn't this problem checked if my truck had been in & out of a ford service facility the last 3 mo.'s of 2010. i made it known that i would be filing a complaint with your adminstration and i would be warning everyone i know for fear that this could happen to others. i also told them that i hoped that ford motor co. would issue a recall.

To whom it may concern, my grandfather charles compton bought a 2000 ford f-150 on 12-15-08. on sept. 24,2010 he and my grandmother was driving back home when a person started flagging them down. both gas tank straps had failed and the gas tank was dragging on the ground and leaking gasoline, luckily they stopped, and the tank did not explode.the police and fire department was called out. the repair shop said that the straps were rusted and corroded which caused the straps to fail. my grandfather said that the dealer had informed him that the previous owner had garage kept it, and he has also kept it in a garage since he had purchased it. the tank and straps had to be replaced and the repair cost was $524.29. i wish there would have been a notice sent out to the consumers about the 32 claims. this could have gave the consumer notice to have it checked out, prior to the failure. if the tank would have exploded, i could have lost both of my grandparents. if you need to contact me or my grandfather please contact me by e-mail address mscompto@fuse.net and i will give out our phone numbers.

Cng transfer tubing (connects fill connector, 3600 # cng storage cylinder, and engine side of fuel system together) passes through the floor of the truck bed and hole is shielded with a rubber grommet. the tubing on this and our other identical truck were found to be chafing through the grommets due to the angle at which they passed through the relatively small (1) hole in the bed. it appears as though this would have created a failure in the tubing if left alone. we adjusted the rotation of the tubing fittings and we believe we have solved this problem ourselves, but due to the fact that these are ford factory installed gfi cng systems, we thought we should generate some action. we also have three gfi aftermarket cng kits that have almost the same configuration but the fuel line hole cut into the bottom of the bed is approximately 2 and has a boot that centers the tubing in that hole. this appears to offer much better protection to the tubing
