EA05004FORD MOTOR COMPANY02/17/200507/06/2005FRONT SEAT BELT BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
During the initial recall campaign in 2001, the subject vehicles were inspected by ford dealerships using a test tool that would detect a defective front seat outboard seat belt buckle assembly.approximately one million vehicles passed the inspection test for one or both front buckles.subsequent to the recall service action, odi received 15 consumer reports alleging that a passed inspection buckle subsequently failed to latch or inadvertently unlatched during use.in addition, ford has identified 543 owner and field reports alleging buckle failure subsequent to passing the inspection test.ford tested and examined over 100 warranty-returned buckles and found that 44% of the buckles had no problem or a condition not related to the recall inspection (non-latch related buckle damage or foreign contamination).warranty claims were highest during the 18-month period after the start of the recall (july 2001) and have been declining during the past 24 months.over the past 12 months, ford has received approximately 12 warranty claims per month out of a vehicle population of about one million.complaints counts are also decreasing.during the past seven months, odi has received only two complaints. a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

Under recall campaign (01v227), ford recalled approximately 1.3 million vehicles to inspect and if necessary replace the front driver and/or passenger seat belt buckle.approximately 1.1 million owners responded by taking their vehicles to a dealer for inspection of the buckle using a specialized buckle test tool.ford reported that 829,927 vehicles had both buckles pass the tool test and another 167,336 vehicles had one buckle pass.odi and ford received complaints alleging seat belt buckle failure shortly after passing the original recall inspection service.complainants alleged that the buckle failed by either not latching or false-latching (partial engagement of the latch to the latch plate).a false-latched buckle may release with minor movement or impact against the buckle housing including inadvertent release while the vehicle is in motion.odi is upgrading this recall query to an engineering analysis (ea05-004) to further analyze the field performance of those vehicles that ford dealers passed (one or both buckles) using ford's inspection test (997,263 vehicles).

Two of the seat belt buckles in the rear have failed. the literally fell apart and when reassembled, no longer work properly in that they fail to latch. this is a different failure mode than my driver seat buckle that had false latching and was the subject of a recall for some vins (not mine)

Middle seat belt on ford f-150 supercrew 4wd innards popped out of seat belt sheath. this seat used very little. ford said even though there was a recall in 2001, i believe, on the front seat belts that there is nothing on the back middle. this is a safety hazard and should not occur. *tr

Recall id nhtsa: 01v227001 - seat belt buckle comes undone while driving - i brought my 2001 ford f150 into the dealership to repair the seat buckle which periodically came undone while driving. the dealership inspected the buckle and said there was no problem with the buckle. the seatbelt buckle continues to spontaneously become disconnected while driving. i took my f150 into the dealership today to have it actually repaired. ford would not fix the seat buckle since it had already been inspected. bottom line, i feel that ford should repair the faulty seat buckle. *tr

My husband was driving our 2001 ford f150 supercrew lariat on 4/14/04. he was struck from behind by a dodge neon going approximately 70 mph. my husband was going 35 mph. the safety belt did not latch nor did the airbag deploy, resulting in my husbands being thrown forward and hitting his head at great force on the windshield. the force of the crash totalled my truck, cracking and bending the frame. had either safety feature worked, my husband would not be injured today. four weeks later he suffers from short term memory loss, extreme anger and mood swings and has soft tissue damage to his neck and vertebrae. i have contacted ford and am waiting for a response. *ak rq04011.*pco

Front passenger side safety belt latch does releases at any given time. it always latches with no problems and appears secure, yet will come undone while driving. this latch releases with ease while driving at anytime. this has become more prevalent now that my kids are old enough to be in the front seat. when testing its security after initially latching, it will come unlatched when tugging on the strap hard. this latch has already been checked for foreign objects and none were found. the ford dealership continues not to check for defect without charge and am very upset about that. they state that my vin number is not included in this recall, but definitely has the same problems as the others. i am very concerned with the safety now that my kids are able to ride in the front passenger seat. since ownership, there have been events every time a passenger sat up front. there have been no deaths, injuries, fires, damage as yet.*jb

This may be a moot point because the truck (2001 f-150 supercrew xlt 4wd) i had owned (traded it in for a 2003 ford supercrew which also exhibits very similar problems) had serious problems with the steering in addition to the driver seatbelt becoming disengaged while driving normally. i could not understand why the seatbelt would disengage all by itself. i even had witnesses to the fact. i asked for the service to address it; however, they could not duplicate the problem. this is serious as what are seatbelts for in the first place. also had some problems with the paint cracking or spidering. ford regional personnel from denver wanted to repaint the vehicle. however, they could not determine how it would be accomplished. this went on for over 4 months. that is one of the main reasons in addition to the steering problems described previously i had get rid of the problem supercrew i had purchased. *la rq04011.*pco owner granted permission to release info_*pco
