ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

I purchased my truck six months ago, at the time of purchase i noticed a ticking in the engine, after inquiring to the salesman about the engine noise he informed me that his service tech's had inspected the problem and there wasn't a problem. the noise has progressively worsened since purchase. i was at an engine re-builders place of business with a friend and the mechanic asked if i knew what the ticking was, i replied no and he took me into his office and printed a tech bulletin (aera tb2471) that addressed the camshaft and lash adjuster design change for ford 5.4l vin 5 engines. these were redesigned in 2005 to correct the ticking noise and keep valves from dropping, which the mechanic informed me he had 5 vehicles in his shop due to this issue. i went to my local dealership for a recall issue (clockspring in air bag) the service advisor mentioned the ticking as i drove up, i asked if he knew of the service bulletin and showed him the copy i had, his comment was to not tow anything! i called the service manager for this location and was told to contact ford directly, which i have and am waiting for a response. the mechanic i spoke with said this is a common occurrence with this engine, look for the number 5 as the eighth digit in your vin number. i feel that this truck has been completely misrepresented to me during and after purchase and feel lemon laws or recalls should be used or in place.

My ford f-150 truck blew the #5 spark plug. broke the coil on the spark plug. had to have the truck towed and the repairs cost me about $90. on march 21st, the truck blew the #3 plug. this time it stripped the threads in the block and had to be retapped and repaired. this repair cost over $200. i contacted ford and they claim they were not aware of this issue. however, both the mechanics that worked on this truck told me that they had repaired a lot of these ford trucks. this could be a very dangerous situation since unburned fuel is pumped out of the crater left by the blown plug and onto the hot motor. i have been lucky that my truck hasn't caught fire. if my wife had been driving i don't know that she would have known what to do. if you google blown spark plugs on ford f150 trucks online, you will see that there have been thousands of these issues reported to ford, and various other agencies that are supposed to take care of these things. ford motor company is ignoring the problems because they don't want to have to recall all the defective vehicles. will everyone just sit around and wait until a few people are killed because of these defects. please do something!!

I was driving with my children when out of nowhere my f150 started to power down, vibrate and shake. during this time, no check engine light came on. i was able to make it back home albeit running very roughly. i called the ford dealership where i bring my truck, they said to bring it in the next morning. on dec 11 i was able to get my truck to the dealership finally having the solid check engine light come on that morning. after a couple of days i received a call from the dealership saying i had a major problem, i needed a new engine. i was able to speak with the mechanic and he said after pulling the 1st spark plug it shattered upon removal. he was able to get the parts out of the cylinder head, but did notice the bottom of the spark plug was bent backwards. they used an engine scope to inspect the damage and they were able to see damage to the piston head about the size of a quarter. when i asked him what caused this to happen, he couldn't give me an answer, saying in all his years, he's never seen anything like this before. i proceeded to have the vehicle towed to another mechanic to see if he saw the same thing. he came to the same conclusion as the ford dealership again never having seen something like this before and could not explain why this happened to my truck. i was told by the dealership a new engine would cost around 7500 for my truck. in the years that i've owned the truck, i had the check engine light come on one time. after checking the owners manuel, it stated it could be numerous thngs including a loose gas cap or possible water in the gas line. if the light goes out after a couple of cycles of gas, which it did, no need to follow through. when i spoke with the ford mechanic and independent mechanic, both said i should've heard something. i never heard any sounds in the vehicle that would've prompted concerns for a complete engine overhaul. no warning lights ever indicated a severe engine problem and thus putting my family's safety at great risk.

Tl*the contact owns 2004 ford f-150 truck. the contact was driving 30 mph when the engine stalled and the contact coasted in neutral gear onto the side of the road. the roads were wet, yet, they played no factor in the vehicle failure. the vehicle was towed to his residence. the dealers quoted a price of $300-$1800 to replace the spark plugs. the dealer stated that the repair did not fall under the 100,000 mile warranty. the failure mileage was approximately 60,100. the current mileage was 60,300. updated 03/26/10

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 ford f150. the contact took the vehicle in for a routine tune-up in 2007. a few months later, he had to replace the motor. on march 9, 2008, the vehicle stalled and the check engine indicator illuminated. he took the vehicle to a repair shop and the diagnostic indicated that the timing chain slipped and caused the metal clips to fail. the manufacturer stated that because a ford dealer did not replace the motor, they would not assist with the repairs. the vehicle was repaired at the cost of $1,893 at an independent repair shop. the failure mileage was 94,000 and current mileage was 95,000. updated 0424/09. *lj updated 04/27/09.*jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 ford f150. when the contact depressed the brake pedal, the vehicle would stall. the failure also occurred when turning the vehicle at less than 5 mph. the rpms would drop to zero before the vehicle stalled and jerked as if it were attempting to proceed forward. the dealer could not duplicate the failures. the contact discovered that by placing a higher grade of fuel into the vehicle, the failures would temporarily cease for a few months. the failure mileage was 17,000 and current mileage was 103,000.

2004 f150 5.4 triton sounds like a diesel engine took to dealer for diagnosis at aprox. 30,000 miles. dealer stated that this is normal. engine failed at 98,000 miles due to valve timing issues, related to cam phasers. thus cam shaft quit rotating allowing pistons to collide with vales causing engine failure. dealer now wants 7624.00 to replace engine. the ford dealership states that they have not seen this type of engine failure. but after reviewing the complaints on this site along with many other web sites related to this issue it seems that fomoco knows that this is a serious issue and they are unwilling to address the issue. what can be done to have fomoco address and compensate for these issues. *tr

 1) unknown events leading to failure, normal driving, events happened when i first turned on vehicle and during backing up .2) the engine raced out of control and lurched until ignition key was removed (it grabs the gas pedal from the driver like cruise control does) if someone or something is in vehicle's path it or they will be crashed into. then the vehicle and 8 cylinder runs like its on 4 cyl and the air conditioner doesn't work. 3) taken to ford dealer coastal ford in mobile al,they rebooted computer but would not replace computer board, they said just bring it back for reboot if it happens again, diagnostic did not reveal reason for racing engine they were not concerned that if the events happened again an accident could not be prevented or the truck being destroyed which means it could not be taken back for reboot or how to prevent this event .i wanted them to replace the supposedly defective computer board (in my opinion that's the problem) old part still in vehicle .no damages yet but since i professionally bass fish, i could be run over, the truck might race into the water,or someone else and their equipment could be run over and if backing into the garage with a boat the house and boat could be damaged or if the boat trailer has to be dealt with the person behind the truck could be run over. 2004 f150 extended cab v8 engine truck is the vehicle. 6 events over the last 4 months (it just came out of some of its warranties, ford dealer said the computer was warranted for 8 more years)*jb

Dt: the consumer bought a used 2004 ford f150 and has been experiencing a problem with the engine dying when applying brake pressure. this occurs in high traffic areas and at slower speeds in stop and go traffic. took to a dealer and they performed eec diagnostic quick test and pinpoint test diagnostic ignition tests as well. as a result of those tests they replaced a mass airflow sensor assembly and reprogrammed the pcm. has been to dealer on 4 occasions for this problem and dealer claims they can not find anything wrong with it. contacted ford manufacturer they had joystickor test stick installed in vehicle for 5 days in which consumer was unable to duplicate the problem at that time. this has happened 1 time since. also on the dash there is a 4x4 high/lo light that illuminates on the dash when this occurs but the vehicle does not have 4 wheel drive. dealer said they were unable to reset the pcm to correct this particular problem. this is still a problem, no recent repairs. dealer can not duplicate the problem at this time. *jb

2004 ford f-150 2wd reg cab long bed: 1 - shifting vehicle with automatic transmission during a complete stop from reverse to drive 2 - once drive engaged, the throttle engaged at full power without driver's initiation of gas pedal. tried to stop vehicle by applying brake first with one foot, then with two, with no effect. the vehicle finally stopped once shifted to neutral and then to park. damage to vehicle caused by running through a chainlink fence which resulted in approx $2500 in repairs. 3 - ford roadside assistance towed vehicle to dealer. service technicians could not locate problem. damaged fixed in dealer body shop via driver's insurance policy. once body work completed, the body shop technician put in a request to the service technician to check the vehicle again as the throttle was not responding properly. vehicle is currently still in service shop for further mechanical investigation.

The #3 spark plug was ejected from the engine block. upon inspection, the threads were stripped and damaged beyond belief. after tapping the whole, hte plug was able to be replaced. a month later, the #7 plug did the same thing being ejected from the engine. another round of fixing but this time the repair was not successful. the new plug did not stay in. both of the old plugs are in pieces with most of the parts lost to the roadway below.

I own a 2004 ford f150 5.4 liter engine. i have never changed the spark plugs. i driving and a spark plug blew out of the engine. this could be a serious problem and expensive and not created by me,it has to be a defect. the gas vapors coming out of the plug hole could start a fire. *tr

2004 f150 4.6ltr engine. spark plug blow out #3 cylinder 64865 miles. original factory parts. spoke directly to ford motors they act as if this is my fault. the parts have never been changed. ford told me it is not covered under warrenty because this is a maintanence part. the dealer told me that this has been a big problem for ford. but they wont honor to fix the problem even though it is a mechanical failure due to bad design. it cost 600.00 to fix and i beleive this should be covered by ford due to the number of instences. there were two trucks fixed the same day for the same problem and again the service department said this has been a big issue. i would like this to be resolved. the consumer should not have to worrie about a spark plug blowing out while driving. this is a saftey issue because fuel keeps flowing into the cylinder and when ignights flames fly out through the spark plug hole. quit acting like th is is not a problem and recall these poor desinged parts before someone does get hurt. *tr

There is already a tsb for the problem but ford should really recall the cam phasers on the 2004 and newer f150's. most people in this economy cannot afford to throw 2 grand into there car to have a factory defect fixed and ford won't step up to the plate. i have owned numerous ford's in the past and will never buy one again because of their lack of being a good company. i'm sure because the problem is on there number one engine they don't have the money to cover it and don't care that they'll loose half those customers. *tr

Condensation in the engine block. after finding water in the oil of my vehicle, a 2004 ford f150 with the 5.4 liter engine, i took it to the dealership for head/head gasket repair assuming the water was antifreeze coming from a failed head gasket. the mechanic at the dealership identified the water in the oil and told me that this comes from condensation in the engine block and that it is a normal condition in all f150s with the 5.4 liter engine. i don't know if this means only those built after 2004, or all. water in any engine is not a good thing as it causes corrosion, breaks down lubrication, etcetera. potential failure would be that the engine could prematurely/unexpectedly fail, stranding the driver and having a huge cost implication for the owner who would likely have to have a remanufactured engine installed at their own cost since the failure is likely to occur after the 3 year/36000 mile warranty has expired. nothing at all was done to correct this defect.*jb

I purchased a new 2004 f-150 vin 1ftpw12524kd42894 in aug 2004. the safety issue i have is that we began having a problem with the vehicle stalling while it was being driven and for some reason when the vehicle was turning left. it was not a constant thing when we were drivng the truck. however after a few occassions over a couple months we took it to the dealer.we took in on feb.1 2005. the vehicle had 2600 miles on it at this time.the dealer concurred with the problem and the dealer contacted ford motor company for assistance on how to correct the problem.the dealer did as they were instructed by ford and did checks and inspections of several systems. they thought they had it resolved.but a month to six weeks later it began stalling again.only a couple of times at low speed.then some time pasted it did it again then a week later it shuttered while entering traffic. then 3 days later it stalled in the middle of a three lane expressway blocking traffic for more than an hour.in the past everytime it stalled it would restart. this time it would not crank over but it had a hot battery.it was towed to the dealer they diagnosed it as a bad mircoprocessor i believe. this was replaced ,it did not cure the problem.the current milage on the vehicle is 4700 miles. my safety concern is that as many times as this vehicle has stalled i have not been hit by another vehicle. but my luck may run out. have others had simular problems, have there been recalls in this problem or service bullents.i emailed ford and it was confirmed that they recieved my email but they did not respond for the second time.the dealer is very understanding buy if ford has data that will help they need to convey it to the dealer.i need a resolution and an assurance that the problem is solved.its no different from driving a vehicle that the steering may break at any time.when it stalls i loses power brakes and power steering plus the danger of approaching traffic.
