My drivers side window went out one day, then about two days later my passenger and back left window went out. i brought it to the ford dealership to get it fixed, along with what i thought was a spark plug and coiles. well i a found out that a 2004 f-150 i have to replace the engine. while it was in the shop my back right window aperantly went out . it was working when it went in, and when i got it back i had a plastic tarp on my window, panel was off, and noone had told me they let it rain in my truck or that the one window that had worked was now out also. *tr

Vehicle has drive train vibration & rear end howl sense i test drove it aug 2004. i pointed out the drive train vibration to my salesman and he said it probably lost a wheel balance weight. a friend went into the same dealership ( lindquist ford) and was told the same thing after they have acknowledged there are tsbs on this problem and after my truck was in & out of their shop numerous times. so far the tires and wheels have been forced balance, drive shaft replaced, cab mounts replaced, transmission tail shaft end play checked & rear end replaced. none have resolved the issues. the service manager told me ford has identified the automatic transmission as the problem. we preceeded to arrange replacement and i insisted on a new not a rebuilt one. he got back with me and said the new ford rep he was dealing with doesnt replace transmissions ! mine suddenly.......... you guessed it.. its within specifications !! the dealership management wont return my calls. ford wont be shamed into fixing these problems unless/ until the media gets involved.

When using passing gear at 45-65 mph you get a very strong vibration until you go into overdrive. when you use the od shut off button at 65 - 50 mph you get the same vibration. (1) ford sent letter in janurary from 1st complaint in oct 04 saying it was the tires and would only warranty them for 3 year not replace them now. (2) may both front steel rims. now at this point vibration is only between 50 - 65. (3) truck was in shop from 31 may to 10 jun 05. replaced (a insulator asy - engine support), (drive shat assemby -rear) removed and installed. (insulator - powertrain rear support) replaced. i do not have old parts, dealer kept them. vibration is still there. the mechanic told me that this problem is only in 373 rear ends. my brother in tx (san angelo, was helping me, his best friend is the service mgr at the ford dealer there and they have the same problem). a friend told me her father in al has the same problem and ford can not fix it. my service mgr bryan and i drove a 2005 identicile to my truck and the vibration was worse then mine. my concern is what in the lon term will it have on us who will be towing campers and going up and down mountaing and using the lower gear for power and braking. what will that vibration do to the drive train? who lives will be put in at risk because of this. thank you for your help.

2004 ford f150 problems with upper ball joint assembly as well as tire wear.*mr the upper joint was the cause of the tire wear on one tire. the consumer stated since he purchased the vehicle it exhibited a rattle noise, the side view mirror had to be replaced because it was vibrating so badly, the hood had to be reinforced so it would not flutter at highway speeds. the vehicle needed a new transmission. *jb

Have a 2004 fx4 supercrew 4x4. have two problems. first, the speedo reads 4 to 5 mph fast, have had in shop twice still no fix, was told that was the best they could do. second, when taking off from dead stop rear end makes 2 slipping clunks, was told from dealer it is the leaf springs so they greased them. problem went away for a day maybe and is back louder then ever. only 5000 miles on truck. wish ford would step up to the plate and take care of some of these known problems. *jb

I own a 2004 ford f150 4x4. i had serious transmission problems and had to have the transmission replaced. the first time was 2/07 with 42,000 miles on the vehicle. i have never towed anything with the truck. my mile are commuting miles. the transmission was supposedly replaced. now here i am 2 years and 60,000 miles later and i am having transmission problems again. after investigating this problem, it appears that this is an ongoing problem with ford. ford needs to step up and take care of their customers before someone is seriously injured or killed. *tr

On june 29, 2009 while driving the vehicle on a busy city street the automatic transmission suddenly and without warning appeared to shift into neutral. there was no noise or any indication of the catastrophic failure that had occurred. the engine revved with no response from the transmission. while trying to avoid traffic as the vehicle slowed i attempted to clear traffic lanes as safely as possible. the transmission was shifted down into second gear as i slowed to see if this had any effect on the transmission. the vehicle immediately responded and i pulled out of traffic lanes. i immediately checked the fluid level and it was in standard operating range. i then disengaged the overdrive of the transmission and the vehicle was driven home. an inspection of the vehicle found the overdrive clutch pack failed. this vehicle is well maintained, does not tow anything and is driven to and from work, 30 miles each way. the repair is $2500.00 for a 5 year old vehicle with 69,700 miles. i believe this standard equipment from ford was not designed to perform at an adequate performance level as expected from a consumer. the consumers who purchase new ford vehicles should be able to expect the product to last longer than the payments one makes on the new vehicle! *tr

2004 ford f150 with numerous problems. now at 82000 miles the transmission is slipping badly. the transmission slips when accelerating and the engine revs until the transmission kicks in. i am afraid when it decides to jump in gear it is going to cause an accident. from what i have read on the internet many other f150 owners are experiencing the same problem with the transmission. our truck was purchased new but has been in the shop repeatedly for brake problems (7 times), tire problems (2 times), rear end (2 times), broken drive shaft (2 times), electrical (1 time), electrical is starting to have problems now too. we replaced a 98 mazda truck with this 04 f150 because we thought the f150 would be safe and reliable. the 98 mazda, sold to my brother-in-law, is still running great. what a mistake!!!! *tr

I bought the 2004 fx4 f-150 super cab in late 2005 with 25000 miles on it. i purchased a $1400 extended warranty from an independent company through the ford dealership. after the first few months i noticed a grinding sound under the truck that sounded like a few ball bearings rolling around quickly in a metal bowl. it would last about 5-10 seconds and then i would not hear again for a few months. after about the 5th time this happened i took vehicle to the ford dealership, and they could not duplicate the problem, so nothing was done. the next time this noise was heard i quickly turned on the 4x4 high via the switch on the dashboard and the noise went away immediately. i could do this every time after. this was telling me it was somewhere in the transfer case. so, last week around 60000 miles the transmission started grinding in traffic, slipping, and giving me a transmission fail indication where the odometer was located , and a flashing overdrive off. this happened for about 10 minutes until i could get off the expressway, and exit into a gas station parking lot. i thought for sure the transmission was going to blow out at any moment. i turned off the truck, which reset the transmission fail alarm, put the truck in reverse, which made a loud slamming noise. i then put it in drive and was able to drive home with only grinding noise in first gear. i waited 2 days ,and then drove the truck to the dealership 40 minutes away without any problems . after a day in the s repair shop they pulled the pan and it had metal shavings everywhere. they called and told me they couldn't figure out how i was able to drive to the repair shop. they found some bad seals and a vacuum pump/solenoid in the transfer case, the transmission was gone and was completely replaced. all the software has been updated, which i have heard can cause the majority of the problems. it would have cost me around $6000 if i didn't purchase the complete warranty.*ak

2004 f-150 supercrew 2wd automatic. transmission requires rebuild at 54000. bought new all seals replaced within 2-3 months due to fluid leaks. slipping began less than 40,000. fluid flush alleviated the issue, but slipping returned. at 60 mph trasmission slipped into neutral momentarily at random times. power rear sliding window does not work; failed within first 2-3 months; no computer code to detail the issue so ford will not fix regardless of confirmed failure and warranty coverage. rotors had to be replaced on first break maintenance.*ak

My f-150 supercrew has developed a problem with the drivetrain, primarily a loud grinding noise can be heard underneath the truck. the first time it occurred i thought my vehicle had run over some type of metallic object on the roadway. the noise went away after i merged onto a highway. four days later i was operating on a city street when the same type noise occurred. the vehicle will not accelerate when the gas is depressed and the noise does not decrease when the gas is let off. only after decreasing speed under 15 mph does the noise go away and the transmission feels like it slams out of gear just prior to that. an associate of mine who owns a 2005 f-150 with the exact same transmission experienced the same problem and recently had the transmission replaced under warranty. i contacted this dealer who informed me that they had replaced approximately 30 transmissions on 2004-2005 model years and the issue was a known one. i would like to see ford mandated to warranty the drivetrains in these trucks beyond the normal period. *nm

Experience consistent significant jerk/clunk/slam after coasting in 3rd gear and accelerate down shifting into 2nd gear. service bulletin says normal and to not repair, yet my issue is not intermittent and is a significantly noticeable and uncomfortable jerk in the driveline that is definitely not normal performance from any transmission aware of without a very aggressive shift kit installed and a plethora of horsepower. took to dealer and service tech handed me service bulletins and didn't even log into computer that vehicle was taken in for the issue. made notes and sent to shop foreman as communication of my concern about the lack of paperwork and record, and the lack of service. technician drove truck and said this was normal...would never buy a vehicle knowing that it would end up shifting like this as normal wear and tear while under warranty. *jb

Dt: on 8-15-05 transmission slipped while driving on the expressway at 60 mph. the owner had to pull over. the truck started to buck as if it was going in and out of gear. no warning light came on. the owner had to pull off since traffic was busy, and checked the transmission fluid, and there was no transmission fluid. owner had the vehicle towed to a dealership, who advised the owner that the truck was missing one quart of fluid, but could not find any other problems. the dealership filled the transmission fluid. the owner checked the transmission fluid a few minutes ago and it was overfilled. the owner's manual indicated that the high fluid level could be and indication of having an overheating problem. the owner felt that it may be a deception on the part of the dealership. he felt that the transmission was warped due to being operated without adequate fluid. the dealership did find the number 8 cylinder was misfiring, which did not seem to relate to the transmission slipping. when the truck was first purchased, the owner noticed when going up a hill it stopped and rolled. the owner had to keep the foot on the brake to keep it from rolling back. the owner notified the dealership about this problem. the dealership advised that this was normal. the owner has not contacted ford yet.*ak

I bought a 2004 ford f150 in april 2004. several times in the past 10 months, i have brought it to the dealer to have them fix two problems. the first problem is regarding my brakes. they continually squeak and sometimes feel sluggish. i had a jiffy lube representatives inspect my brakes and they said the rotors looked scarred. i brought this to the attention of the ford dealer and they said my brakes were within ford specifications, and they could not do anything for me. the second problem revolves around a transmission that skips in an out of gear. in several poinst, while pulling on to highways, the transmission skips and and delivers too much power to the rear wheels, causing the tires to slip on wet pavement. luckily, neither of these incidents has caused any accidents. however, i am concerned as they happen frequently and the dealer states that the conditions are normal. i have researched these problems and found that many 2004 f150 super crew owners experience similar problems.*ak

The truck has had multiple vibration at varying speeds but mostly at highway speeds since it was bought. the f150 has been in many times with many parts replaced, vibrations seem to be worse now than before. i tried factory buyback with fords board but they seem to think it is fixed, i have ask them to drive the truck again like the dealership did to verify the vibrations. they seem uninterested in my problem and they have not fixed a damn thing since the board decision that it is fixed but it is worse and i told them it was worse personnally, the truck is a pile of poop and ford knows it but because many of these trucks have the problems they are not willing to fix the problem. *ak

I bought a 2004 f150 stx 4x4 in late february of 2004. the truck has a 4.6 liter v-8, automatic transmission and a 3.73 limited slip rearend. since i have had the truck the rearend has developed a loud whining sound and slung the rearend lube out and under the bed. it was replaced and have had not further trouble in that area. the truck then developed a stall like it was low and gas and blew black smoke on cold starts and take-offs. that problem still hasnt been solved after 3 attempts w/ my dealership to get it fixed. the windsheild also developed a large crack in it, it was replaced. the dealership said that it was stress related. currently the truck is at my dealership unmoveable because the transmission just recently went out. the dealership refused to fix my truck because they claim it has water in it. the truck has never been exposed to water other than what rain gathered on the road. my dad went to inspect the situation and they only showed him water in a cup he didnt see and drained from the transmission.*ak

I have two main problems with my ford f150, my vehicle has a vibration which is at its worse between 40 to 60, which is getting worse, constant at around 50mph, and to a lesser extent throughout the 0 to 40 mph and a strong vibration is sometimes felt on deceleration, just before stopping, i also hear a loud booming which coincides with the vibration speeds and i think that this vibration is setting up a resonance or reverberation in the vehicle and with the windows in open positions, on the second day i noticed scratches and indentations on roof, approx 5 of them running on a diagonal, called and left message with salesman, no response, thursday 9/23/04 had sales manager and body shop manager look at dents, truck was taken back and buffed out, scratches and dents still visible. appointment was made for a specialist to try to massage dents out, but in case results werent satisfactory, then body filler could be applied and painted, told them repeatedly i dont want body filler on my new truck.i also made a complaint about a vibration between 40 to 60 mph, and that i believed that this was setting up a resonance or reverberation and causing booming sound in truck, service manager took ride in vehicle and said it was wind buffeting, said he would check with ford engineers and send me a transcript of findings, never did. sat 9/25 i called fords complaint number that is listed in the manual, explained that the truck was delivered damaged and requested a replacement truck, also explained that i felt pressured to accept body filler and vibrations in my new truck, was told that a transcript of the conversation would be sent to the complaint manager, he would receive the transcript on monday, 10am thursday 9/30/04, i expected a call regarding this transcript, after receiving none, i called the complaint manager and i was asked if it was alright for them to call me back, i said that would be fine, 5:30pm sat 10/02/04, have not recieved a call back, despite request made.*ak

My 2004 ford f150 was parked in my driveway in park with the engine running and ac on max. i left it running while i unloaded the back seat of several items. i then closed the doors and proceeded to unload 4 cases of water from the bed of the truck. i made 5 trips from the truck to the house and when i returned and put the tailgate back up my truck took off towards my house and impacted the brick wall of the gararge (approx 20 to 25 foot distance). i tried to run from the back and open the door and apply the brake but the truck hit the house as i got the door open. the shifter was still in park. i applyed the brake and put it in reverse and moved it back to reveal the damage. my wife and i tested this afterwards to attempt to duplicate this without being able to reproduce it. my house and the truck are damaged and i feel that this has the potential to really hurt someone. after being told of this site by my insurance company i see that this has happened to other people and one has almost an identical story. see complaint 10081205. i have taken the vehicle to the dealership and have not been given any information yet.

The vehicle was parked in our driveway and left running. we had 3 coolers in the back seat, so we left it running with the air on. we had driven approximately 300 miles total that day with the air conditioning on high. we unloaded the coolers 1 at a time. this took approximately 30 minutes. we were standing in our kitchen when all of a sudden something smashed into the house and then we see our vehicle driving by the window up our driveway. it slid along the house and hit the garage (garage is detached). my husband jumped in the vehicle and put it in reverse and turned it off before it went through the garage. it had hit the center pole, and was stopped by that. there was no one outside when this occurred. we contacted the ford dealer and were told it was impossible for the vehicle to come out of park by itself. i have been researching this, and found that ford has had this problem in the past, so i think it is possible. there is no other explanation for this happening. there was no one around outside, and we were in the house. the vehicle had been sitting in the driveway for over 30 minutes and we had been in it 4 different times (in the back seat) unloading stuff, so there is no way it was not in park. we tested this too, if you leave it in drive, as soon as you step off the brake it rolls forward right away. we also do not believe it was a prank by anyone, as there was no one around outside and my husbands wallet was on the dash and my purse was in the passanger seat and both were not touched. i am very concerned that there is something wrong with the vehicle, but like i said they keep insisting it isn't possible. which is not true, as i see they have had this problem in the past. i'm not sure what else i can do at this point since the ford dealer won't even acknowledge that this could be a problem. *ak

I have a 2004 f-150 (extended cab). while taking off, turning left or right- you will feel a vibration in the rear. this developed approx. 1 month after receiving the new truck. i have returned the vehicle to my service department, and the service manager felt the vibration as well. he ordered a whole new rear axle assembly, and this was replaced. he explained this problem was due to when turning- one wheel is moving faster than the other, which sometimes causes this vibration if it was not properly lubricated. i felt the vibration more when the vehicle was cold, and the axle was not warm. after the first repair, the new axle worked fine- but the problem has returned- approx. 1 month later. i only have 6500 miles on the truck, and this will be it's 3rd rear axle. if any one else is experiencing this, my vehicle's rear end was replaced, and will need to be repaired again. *jb

I started experiencing a growling and hissing noise coming from the rear of my 2004 ford f150 xlt at approximately 84,000 miles. the noise was most prominent between 20 to 35 mph. the dealership inspected the vehicle and found the pinion, ring gear and four bearings to be in need of replacement. when i inquired what would cause these parts to fail i was told it was due to no fault of my own. parts were replaced and i do have all of the replaced parts in my possession. i talked to the dealership and corresponded with ford motor company customer service regarding this incident. ford motor company was unwilling to assist in any way to either fully or partially reimburse me the $1300 repair bill due to the fact the 75,000 mile extended warranty had elapsed. this vehicle has never been used to tow anything and has never been abused. i have owned new vehicles and personally put 150,000+ miles on them without ever having any type of rear differential failure. *tr

This truck has a serious problem in the drive train and the dealer is now refusing to even attempt to repair the problem any longer, claiming that it is a characteristic of the truck. the problem can be described as a violent lurching of the whole truck accompanied by a loud, metallic clunk sound in the drive train. this occurs frequently during normal driving conditions but especially when accelerating up a hill, out of a turn, or up out of a dip in the road. the problem has existed in the truck since i purchased it new in may 2005. i've had the dealer attempt to repair the problem at 3,000, 6,000, 12,000, 18,000, and at 22,000. they've attempted various repairs, but nothing has corrected the problem. at one point they told me that the wrong size driveshaft was installed at the factory. they replaced it with a shorter one, but this did nothing to correct the problem. at first i thought i was just facing a problem that was difficult to solve, but after doing some research on the internet, i know now that this is absolutely a known problem and the manufacturer has instructed all dealerships to not even attempt repair. (the service manager actually showed me this in writing.) *nm

I purchased a new 2004 f-150 regular cab pickup in may of 04. it has had a serious vibration since new. at first i thought it was teething problems, getting broken in as it were. the dealer replaced two drive shafts, a dampener and a complete rear end down to the break rotors. none of this has helped with the vibration. i took it to a second dealer after the original refused to swap the truck out as a good faith gesture. instead they wanted to trade the truck. i was offerd ten thousand plus less than i had purchased the truck for, less than five months earlier. the truck i wanted to swap for went up over six thousand more than the sticker price. the second dealer kept it more than two weeks and could not fix the issue. their service manager told me that they have had several ttrucks with the same issue and had no luck with rectifying it. the original service manager told me it was a lemon, the second service manager told me it was a lemon. neither would put it in writing, for fear of job loss. ford has been no help with the issue, after repeated phone calls and emails, nothing has been done. this is my only reliable vehicle. it now has @17800.0 miles on it mainly highway. the vibration is getting worse with time and milage. i feel that any thing mechanical that vibrates will eventualy break. if i was looking to buy this vehicle used and felt the vibration i would walk away from it! it is that bad. incident date approximate

2004 ford f-150 has had a severe vibration in the steering wheel, gas and brake pedal, floorboard, seat, etc. at all speeds and worse after driving for 20-30 miles, that causes arms and legs to tingle and right leg to go numb resulting in having to use left foot to brake since week three of ownership. this vibration is also causing severe back pain. this truck also has had a clunking and squealing in the rear end. this issue is happening in the majority of 04 and 05 f-150's and ford does not know how to fix it. dsb has said that since there is a liability issue, they cannot make a ruling. so, i am stuck with a $30,000 vehicle that i cannot physically stand to drive!!! ford needs to come up with a fix or recall them all!!! note: have had damper installed, drive shaft indexed twice and clutches in the rear end replaced twice. the rear end is also clunking and whining. *jb

Continuing problem with the truck, there is a vibration from the driveline. it has been in and out of service since 11/25/04 until present for the same issues. ford orginally did not know the problem, and went down the tsb list replacing different parts such as transmission mounts and differential bearings until the last service on 1/27/05 finally fixed the problem by replacing the ring and pinion in the rear differential. however, on 4/15/05 i noticed a vibration and grinding noise from the rear end when turning from a stopped position. vehicle wikk be back in service on 4/25/05.*ak

Rear end shudders or slips when accelerating from stop and turning...there is also a whining sound coming from the rear end...from reading nhsta complaints this seems to be quite a large problem with this truck...seems like ford would step up and fix whatever it is....worst truck i ever bought

I purchased a new 2004 ford f-150 supercrew. the rear differential made a whining sound between 45-50 miles per hour from the day i purchased the truck. my truck now has 7000 miles on it and the whine has become extremely noisy and now makes the whine from 45 mph to 70mph and above. my ford dealer will not make any repairs on the truck becasue they are told that ford motor company is investigating the problem . ford motor company has been investigating this problem since 07-04. it is not 01-05 with no progress to this problem and it has become so severe that i get headaches just from commuting every day listening to the constant whine sound. there needs to be a recall or something to make ford fix his problem as i can't even sell my truck as no one would even consider owning it.*ak

I purchased my vehicle new in june of 2004. since i've had the truck when turning right, especially from a dead stop, i get a severe vibration from the drive train. i've had the truck in many times for this problem. it got so bad ford replaced the drive shaft and seemed to help for a while. with only 17000 actual miles on the truck you would expect better quality for a sticker price of $ 42,000.00. *jb

Dt: the vehicle has been to the dealer 3 times. they didn't know what was wrong with it. there was bad vibration ,like a tie rod end going bad or the wheel coming off. they replaced all the tires , and put a new rim on the passenger's side, and put in a new driveshaft. this started around june 15, 2005. the vehicle was going back to the dealers for the fourth time. haven't contacted the manufacturer but got information on the lemon law. *ak *nm

I was driving my new ford f150 ,3 weeks old, up the highway 70 mph with cruise control on. suddenly the air bag depolyed, buring my right ear lobb. i then pulled over to the side of the highway ,with out any incedent, when i got out i noticed that the driveshaft fell out of the transmission. the transmission was shattered like an egg shell. the mechanics at the dealership pointed out that one c-clip was either never put in the front u-joint. they did not know why the ait bag should have gone off.they then tried to tell my my insurence should fix it. there is no body damage not even a piece of dirt missing. then they said they would fix it. wwhen i went up to sign work release the said they want to send the truck back to the factory. but theynever did this. i then told them i do not want it back they can just keep it. under the lemon law. it was alrready in the shop for over 30 days. they had there legal dept. call me and tell that it is not a lemon and i must keep this truck. i did not argue. but then out of the blue they agian saying i could come up there and pick out 1 of 2 2005 f150 that were more expensive and did not have options mine had. i would have to pay the cash difference up front to pick 1 up. i did not have that kind of cash so i stuck to my word that i dont want a nother ford truck.after this time no one else would discuss the matter with me they just hang up. now they sent a letter to say they selling my truck to pay for legal fees and repiars. please help me to deciced what action i shouldi take . ps i did not go to the hospital so layer do not want to help. *ak

2004 f-150 vibration issue. this is a real and serious issue. i took my truck in for a daignosis on the vibration. the dealer said they narrowed it down to the driveshaft. i waited 3 weeks for a replacement due to the fact that the driveshaft was on back order. after replacement of the driveshaft, dealer informed me that it had not cured the problem. i was told that ford was looking for a fix and they would get back to me when they figure it out. after picking up my truck from the dealer i took it on the freeway to test it out, took to about 55 mph and applied the brakes,i felt a serious vibration from the steering wheel. i called the dealer back and notified them of the unsafe handling of the truck. i was told that the truck was safe to drive. but no guarantees!!! i carry my children in this vehicle. something has to be done about this issue. people's lives are at stake. remember the explorer and the deaths due to rollover!!! thnk you for your time.*ak

Tailgate straps are the same length, but when you put pressure on the tailgate, only the lh tailgate strap supports the tailgate. the truck has vibration and steering wheel nibble problems. they have balanced the tires 4 times, replaced the tires. the fse from ford took the vehicle for a ride and said it needs a new driveshaft. the brake dust is a big problem. you need to wash the wheels daily. ford now has updated pads. i hope they replace them under warranty. two of the rotors are also grooved. the truck has 3000 miles on it. it has been in 5+ times now! the ac unit only had 22 ounces of fliud in it. it is supposed to have 30+. my air was verified to be 8-10 degrees warmer than spec. the gas door (spring) broke. the paint on the hood is flawed. it didn't get fully sprayed on the right front of the hood. both sides of the rear diff. are wet. something is leaking. the seatbelt stitching is coming apart.*ak
