On november 13, 1998 i took my 1992 ford f250 4x4 pickup to the tom denchel ford dealership in processor, washington to get the 60,000 mile service. a short time after i left the truck there i got a phone call from the service manager, douglas butler. he said that i had a problem with the rear brakes. one side leaked oil onto the brake lining. he recommended that an updated bearing and seal should be installed, the drum turned and new brakes put in. of course he recommended having both sides done, which i approved. the total cost including both parts and labor was approximately $580. i had just taken my camper off the truck and noticed that when i braked one of the rear wheels would lock up. i didn't think much about this until the service. when i picked the vehicle up i asked mr. butler if this was a known problem to ford and he said yes. a service bulletin had been issued. he said that he had to make the bearing and seal repair on a regular basis. i don't have the service bulletin number but the number of the service kit is f4tz-1177-c. on page 1 of the service kit an important notice states: the purpose of this kit is to upgrade the ford design 10.25-inch ring gear axle full float hub to the latest design. this kit is not required if, after disassembly, you discover the hub contains an oil slinger as shown in figure 1. if the hub does not contain an oil slinger, continue with procedure. since the original design was flawed and could have caused a braking failure i recommend that ford voluntarily recall all trucks with this problem and fix at their cost. they should also reimburse me for my costs. | |||
