Defect SummaryThis is not a safety recall in accordance with the safety act. however, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. equipment description: ford is replacing all firestone wilderness at 15, 16, and 17 inch tires mounted on ford trucks and suvs. ford reports tread separation can occur due to a combination of the sensitivity of the tire design to stress, aging, and manufacturing differences between plants. ford is replacing these tires to prevent possible premature tire failure. vehicle description: the vehicles listed below may have been originally equipped with firestone wilderness at tires or may have had wilderness at tires installed during the firestone recall launched in august 2000. certain 1991 throught 2002 ford explorer certain 2001 throught 2002 explorer sport, and sport trac certain 1997 through 2002 mercury mountaineer certain 1991 through 2001 ranger certain 1999 through 2001 expedition certain 1991 through 1994, and 1997 model year f-series certain 1991 through 1994 bronco note: both original equipment and replacement tires are affected.
Consequence SummaryShould the tread separate at highway speeds, a vehicle crash could occur, possibly resulting in personal injury or death.

 Consumer states while his wife was driving their truck, the tire on the front of the truck blew. he states that the sidewall on the tire exploded. he also states that he or his wife had hit anything prior. consumer states that the tires was suppose to be good for 50,000 miles instead he just had 20,000 miles on them. he also states that the tire was a uniroyal size lt 235 85 r/16. ts

 At approx. 9:30 am, truck (with 3 pasengers and no cargo) was traveling on a dry, straight portion of highway when sudden vibration occurred at approx. 60-65 mph followed by tread separation and blowout. after regaining control of vehicle, i pulled off onto right shoulder of highway to inspect damage. my running-board and inner fenderwell sutained damage. mfr. recommended air pressure (max. 80 psi) regularly maintained.*ak

 Replacement tires on a ford, f250, dot vnw81x, while traveling at 70 mph vehicle started to shake. consumer pulled over, and looked at front driver side tire and noticed that tread had separated from tire and rapped around axle. there was severe vehicle damage. *ak dot number vnw81xl038 experienced blowout on driver rear, dot number vnw81xl028 experienced blowout on passenger rear, all tires did damage to vehicle. *slc

 Rear tire on passenger's side is showiing signs of tread separation. about an 8 inch piece of tread was coming off tire, and further up is starting to do the same. replacement tire equipment on a 1992, f250. tire mileage about 16622. bridgestone,dueler apt, tire size lt 23585r16, dot # 789jpua 315.*ak *slc

 Pe00020, tire tread separation: while driving 70 mph, driver heard a thumping noise. immediately afterwards about 2/3 of the tread on the passenger's front side tire(firestone steeltex r4s lt23585r16) came off. driver was able to control vehicle and was not injured. truck was a 1992, ford, f250, not original tire equipment. tire manufactured at decatur illinois plant. tire mileage about 18,000. firestone was contacted about tire. firestone was only willing to prorate fee for that tire. .*ak *slc
