On september 6, 2005, odi received a petition requesting that the agency investigate allegations of engine spark plug ejection in certain model year 1997 through 2004 ford vehicles with triton v-8 and v-10 engines.odi received a total of 474 non-duplicative complaints on the subject vehicles where the complainant, or the dealer repairing the vehicle, reported that a spark plug detached from the cylinder and/or ejected from the engine.as of december 8, 2005, odi is not aware of any allegations where the alleged defect resulted in a loss of vehicle control, a crash, an injury, or a fatality in any of the 10,319,810 subject vehicles.in addition, odi is aware of only two incidents where the vehicle stalled without restart.information contained in the odi consumer complaints and obtained from 72 telephone interviews with complainants showed the following:(1) 99% of the complaints were on my 1997 to 2002 subject vehicles.(2) most the complainants reported hearing a loud pop while driving or upon starting up the vehicle followed by a loud, repetitive clicking or popping sound.(3) many of the complainants reported that the popping sound was accompanied by some loss of vehicle power; however, in 99% of the incidents reported, the vehicle did not stall.in the very few incidents where the vehicle did stall, most vehicles could be restarted.(4) only a small percentage of the complainants cited that they smelled gas or a slight burning smell when the incident occurred.(5) in all but a very few incidents, vehicle damage was limited to the engine.in one incident, the complaint reported that the fuel rail was damaged and replaced after one of the spark plugs ejected from the engine; however, the complainant reported that the damage did not result in any type of fuel leak or fire.in another incident, the only incident where a fire was alleged, the complainant reported that no fluid leak was observed, but that a fire resulted after the spark plug had ejected from the engine and he had restarted the vehicle and driven to another location.none of the complainants reported any damage to the vehicle hood.(6) only two complainants reported that they observed what appeared to be some drops of fuel coming from the cylinder where the spark plug had failed or on the spark plug itself; however, each of these complainants reported that there was no smoke or flames as a result of his incident.as the petitioner noted, and odi

I have had two (2) spark plugs blow from my engine on two (2) separate occasions (1999 ford f250 with 5.4 litre v8 with 150,000 km's). i'm not getting any cooperation from my dealer and in the research i have done on the net, it appears that this is a problem with several models and engines. both times the dealer has repaired it with a healy coil at a cost of approximately $560 plus towing costs. very dangerous as gas is ejected into the engine compartment. it appears that ford has issued a technical bulletin to their dealers and the solution is to replace the defective cylinder head. ok if you are under warranty. it will cost you approximately $3500 in canada to fix ford's defective part if you aren't. *tr

I own a 1999 ford f-250 pickup truck with a 5.4 liter triton v8. my truck has 103k miles on it. i had just replaced all the spark plugs less than a year ago. last week on my way to work, i heard a pop and the engine started making a bunch of noise, lost power and quit. luckily, i was able to pull over into a parking lot and call a tow truck. once getting it home, i noticed that a spark plug had blown out of the engine. my #3 spark plug on the passenger side blew straight out of the head and destroyed the ignition coil pack. after doing much research over the internet, i've found this to be a very common problem with these ford engines and ford won't do anything about it. this will cost well over $3000 to fix. it's a good thing my engine quit so soon, or i could have had gasoline spray out of the open cylinder and cause a serious fire. *jb

Major oil leak coming most likely coming from the area of the left head where it attaches to the block or in that vicinity. i noticed a little oil the week previous on the drive way but was not to concerned as i had just changed oil. yesterday, before leaving to christmas shop i fueled up and checked the oil it was about 2 qts. low so added oil. this morning 12/19/99 i noticed a large quaintly of oil under the truck so i again checked the oil. while driving the day before the engine had lost about 2 gallons of oil in approximately 85 miles of driving. during this drive i noticed no change in oil pressure or any overheating of the engine hopefully the gauges are operating correctly. there was so much oil under the truck that it had saturated the left rear break caliper and the entire under body of the vehicle. i plan on taking the truck to the ford dealer monday morning.

This vehicle has a severe lack of acceration between 3500 and 4500 rpms. i tow a 30' 5th wheel trailer and when attempting to pass another vehicle or anytime i loose power because of a hill i will step on the gas pedal for passing gear. the truck will begin to increase in speed until it gets to 3500 rpms and then looses power at once. this continues until 4500 rpms and then it seems to go into another phase and acts like it should have before by a great increase in power. i have had this to the dealer 4 times about this problem and although they admit its a problem they haven't been able to fix it. today after the 4th try i was told that they drove a new 2000 f250 with a v10 motor and it did the same thing. because of that they told me that it was not correctable because it is a problem that is common with this motor. hogwash! i told them that 2 problems don't make a cure but i was informed that there was nothing more to do. this is a saftey issue because i am sure that i have caused a lot of problems behind me when i have attempted to pas or increase speed on a hill and because of this losse of power have impeaded traffic and cause uncalled for congestion. my call to ford's cutomer service line wasn't any better that my conversation with preston ford's service people. a lot of double talk that meant that they didn't know what to do so they punted. i would appreciate any help with this. thank you, robert w. chalmers
