Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, and light and medium duty pickup trucks. a switch located in the plastic cover of the wiper motor gear case could malfunction and overheat, potentially resulting in loss of intermittent wiper function, loss of wiper park function, complete loss of wiper function, or ignition of the plastic cover material. switch malfunction is most likely to occur when the intermittent setting of the wipers is being used, or when snow or ice obstructs the blades from returning to the parked position at the bottom of the windshield. these vehicles were built at the following assembly plants: atlanta plant from 2/11/00 through 7/31/00; chicago plant from 2/14/00 through 8/4/00; kansas city plant from 2/26/00 to 9/4/00; kentucky truck plant from 2/18/00 to 8/31/00; michigan truck plant from 2/23/00 through 8/3/00; norfolk plant from 2/21/00 through 7/27/00; wayne stamping and assembly plant from 2/25/00 through 8/15/00; and wixom plant from 2/15/00 through 8/8/00.
Consequence SummaryLoss of visibility while driving increases the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the date code on the wiper motor. motors built with the suspect time frame will have the wiper motor gear case cover replaced. owner notification began august 20, 2001. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-866-436-7332.

 Vehicle fails to stop properly when brakes are applied. would shake and vibrate badly. took vehicle to dealership, mechanic noticed rotors were warped, which caused the braking problem. had them replaced after 10,000 miles.*ak engine stalls and oil leaks from the turbo into the inter cooler. transmission does not shift. tires began to bulge out, consumer did not specify kind of tires. electric window motor failed. seals are out on the front axles and they were just replaced two months ago. air filter system is inadaquet for this size of engine and has to be replaced every 2 to 3 thousand miles. *slc

 When vehicle goes through large puddles of water it splashs onto windshield, causing it to be very blurred. it takes several wipes before windshield is cleared enough to see. windshield is so covered that driver can't tell what is in front or where he is going. manufacturer will look into the problem.*ak

 While parked with key on in accessory position windshield wipers came on by themselves. vehicle started smoking between dash and underneath hood, and could hear a sizzling noise. smelled rubber burning. could not turn wipers off until pulling fuse from fuse block. *ak

 Recall campaign 01v258000 concerning windshield wipers. when the consumer contacted the manufacturer, he was told that this vehicle did not fall into this recall although the consumer was experiencing the same problem. *ak the wipers were intermittent after about ten miles of operation, then would not shut off. a local ford dealer replaced the wiper motor assembly. *sc *jb

 While driving approximately 30 mph in heavy rain windshield wipers stopped working. consumer smelled burning plastic, and vehicle caught on fire. consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle and pulled over. the rain put out the fire. *ak

 While traveling on the highway and without prior warning, the windshield wipers stopped while in use. *ak. the wiper motor was replaced under recall previously, however the second time the cover and switch assembly was replaced at the consumer expense. also the pinion seal was replaced due to a leak. ph *jb
