 On september 6, 2005, odi received a petition requesting that the agency investigate allegations of engine spark plug ejection in certain model year 1997 through 2004 ford vehicles with triton v-8 and v-10 engines.odi received a total of 474 non-duplicative complaints on the subject vehicles where the complainant, or the dealer repairing the vehicle, reported that a spark plug detached from the cylinder and/or ejected from the engine.as of december 8, 2005, odi is not aware of any allegations where the alleged defect resulted in a loss of vehicle control, a crash, an injury, or a fatality in any of the 10,319,810 subject vehicles.in addition, odi is aware of only two incidents where the vehicle stalled without restart.information contained in the odi consumer complaints and obtained from 72 telephone interviews with complainants showed the following:(1) 99% of the complaints were on my 1997 to 2002 subject vehicles.(2) most the complainants reported hearing a loud pop while driving or upon starting up the vehicle followed by a loud, repetitive clicking or popping sound.(3) many of the complainants reported that the popping sound was accompanied by some loss of vehicle power; however, in 99% of the incidents reported, the vehicle did not stall.in the very few incidents where the vehicle did stall, most vehicles could be restarted.(4) only a small percentage of the complainants cited that they smelled gas or a slight burning smell when the incident occurred.(5) in all but a very few incidents, vehicle damage was limited to the engine.in one incident, the complaint reported that the fuel rail was damaged and replaced after one of the spark plugs ejected from the engine; however, the complainant reported that the damage did not result in any type of fuel leak or fire.in another incident, the only incident where a fire was alleged, the complainant reported that no fluid leak was observed, but that a fire resulted after the spark plug had ejected from the engine and he had restarted the vehicle and driven to another location.none of the complainants reported any damage to the vehicle hood.(6) only two complainants reported that they observed what appeared to be some drops of fuel coming from the cylinder where the spark plug had failed or on the spark plug itself; however, each of these complainants reported that there was no smoke or flames as a result of his incident.as the petitioner noted, and odi

 My ford truck started making a clicking noise from the engine compartment. then approximately 2 weeks later while driving down the highway at 65mph there was a loud pop and then a loud exhaust sound. the engine threw the number 3 spark plug on the passenger side. it was fixed with an insert but blew the insert out a month later. has not been fixed yet after the second one. *tr

 I have a 2001 f250 7.3 diesel that has stalled or died usually at low speeds while trying to stop or turn a corner. resulting in a loss of power steering and power brakes. the check engine light has never come on. i have taken it to a mechanic and was told if the check engine light was not on he could not check for a trouble code. he also said it most likely is a camshaft position sensor. i checked with ford,they want over $500.00 to replace it. the truck is now out of warranty and i don't want to spend $500.00 and that not fix the problem. *nm

 While driving home with 4 kids in our family f250 ford pick up truck a loud noise, which sounded like gunfire, came from the truck. i stopped as fast as i could and had all of my kids run for safety. i called my brother n law and was screaming hysterically that i thought someone had been shooting at me. he started laughing at me and was quite familiar with what was going on because this was a common thing with ford. the spark plug actually blew out of the head. i contacted ford and they just brushed me off, this is a very serious problem that spark plug could of came through the windshield and killed one of my kids something needs to be done. *jb

 My 2001 f-250 diesel will sometimes stall at traffic signals with the left turn signal on. it did it 3 times today (june 22, 2006) it has approx 106,000 miles on it. *nm

 The cylinder head in my 2001 ford f-250 super duty truck blew out a spark plug. the dealer has quoted a $3,000 repair. the repair requires replacement of the drivers side cylinder head. research of this problem indicates that ford has been having problems with cylinder head failures in the 5.4 liter triton v-8 motor. the apparent cause is due to the number of screw threads available to contain the spark plug. this cylinder head spark plug ports have 4 to five threads available to engage the plug, which is about half of what one would normally expect to find. spark plugs blowing out of a cylinder head are rare or so i thought. there are numerous posts on line of people who have had the same thing happen, on various ford products which use the triton v-8 motor. the mileage at which failure occurs is varied. the dealer informs me that i have no recourse with ford, since my vehicle is out of warranty. *jb
