POWER TRAIN - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Front hubs on 4wd ford f-250 pickup were stuck in locked, even though set to automatic. caused failure of cv joint on front drive shaft, which resulted in crack case and transmission exploding (literally, as in parts flying all over i-80). transmission shop owner (action transmission, rock springs, wy) indicated he's seen same occur before. one part dented support on pontoon boat being towed -- if not there, could have gone through someone's windshield. a very dangerous failure, in my opinion. i have kept and photographed the parts replaced by shop (except what was left of the transmission, which was required to avoid core charge) as well as several pieces i picked up off hightway. the hubs had problems in the past and were replaced less than 11,000 miles before incident, yet were outside fords 12-month warranty period. they have refused to provide any financial assistance with repairs. ford dealer in rock springs had several week backlog on transmission work so i had it repaired elsewhere ($5,818). *tr

First, i love my truck, but if i didn't have an extended warranty, it be down the road. items either repaired or replaced all before 47k miles (now has 49k miles as of 10/2005) with all work being done at my local ford dealership: automatic transmission was replaced once, and again required repair for broken pump. rear end completely replaced. auto front locking hubs replaced twice. rear driveline was replaced. air box broken and replaced. super duty diesel implies a really tough truck, but i baby mine - is that what i'm done wrong? *jb

I have replaced the transmission 3 times since i bought the vehicle in march of 2000. now it is out of warranty and needs another transmission the last transmission was put in(october 2002)they said they would warranty the transmission for one year but now they don't want to do it because it has an after market suspension lift and bigger tires (it's been on there since they put the first transmission in and they performed warranty work on it then). *nlm

The front o rings in the axle fail causing the grease to leak out and the floating hubs stop functioning and either lock in 4x4 mode or not. there is now way to see or check this failure and the repair is to replace the hub and bearing assembly. this repair is anywhere between 1200.00 to 1600.00 depending on the dealer doing the job. this is a very common problem for the f250 4x4 since there were three in the shop at the same time as mine. there is only 47000 miles on my truck and this was not covered by warranty since the factory ended at 36000 miles. *nlm

While accelerating and stopping there is a clunk and you can feel it under the truck. the dealer suggested it was the brakes. i had the brakes changed and the rotors and drums checked but it is still having the problem. i recently visited the ford -trucks. com site to find several cases of this and it apparently is due to an improperly greased drive shaft at the rear bearing. this is a problem that ford should correct due to their negligence in improperly greasing the joint. *jb
POWER TRAIN - MANUAL TRANSMISSION

Consumer stated that, while driving the six speed manual transmission into low gear it pins his leg down to the seat, the shift lever comes to far over and down. the dealer said there is nothing wrong with it and that they would replace the shifter but it would not help. consumer is afraid that this could cause to have an accident. *yd
